[Pre Order] Apple iPad 2019 (7th Gen) up to 6.4% off: 32GB from $499; 128GB from $645 Delivered @ Studio Proper

530

It's not even shipping yet, but here's a discounted price I've found for the new iPad @ studioproper.com.au (Apple Authorised Reseller).
Deal only on the 128GB version, couldn't see a discount on the 32Gb (which is too small anyway IMHO).
Plus comes with a free 1 year Apple TV+ subscription (worth $95.88).

Even a little better than Apple Education pricing! Here's the comparison:

128Gb iPad Studio Proper Apple Educ Apple Store
Wifi $645 $659 $689
Wi-Fi + Cellular $835 $859 $889

EDIT I didn't think this was worth mentioning in the original post as the 32Gb iPad deal is better with Apple Education pricing (if you qualify) as you can get 1.5% cashback: CashRewards or Shopback)… But a little cheaper than retail is not full price!

32Gb iPad Studio Proper Apple Educ Apple Store
Wifi $499 $499 $529
Wi-Fi + Cellular $710 $699 $729

iPad 10.2" (7th Generation):

Like a computer. Unlike any computer.

The new iPad combines the power and capability of a computer with the ease of use and versatility you’d never expect from one. And now it’s even more versatile, with a larger 10.2‑inch Retina display, support for the full-size Smart Keyboard, and the amazing new capabilities of iPadOS. It’s unbelievably fun. And unmistakably iPad.

A bit selective with your quoting there. The line says "Like a computer. Unlike any computer."

While I get your point, you would be surprised how many people get by with just an iPad as their "computer". For many people, they just need to browse the web, send/receive their email, watch some entertainment, play some games etc. An iPad is ideal for that, with almost zero "computer maintenance" required.

Plenty of people need a "real computer", I personally am not comfortable without a fast machine, lots of RAM, 3x large monitors and terabytes of attached storage so an iPad is not going to work for me. But for many people, an iPad is fine.

      • +4

Completely agree, I have a computer, laptop and iPad. When I’m out and about and know I’m purely going to use a browser and email for work or even watch Netflix, there’s no question that I bring the iPad.

      • +5

I just drag out my ‘puter when I want to do the serious stuff. Says the person, lying in bed typing up this comment on my iPad Pro 11”. Having already checked the news, my email, the weather, browsed the web, etc this morning. When travelling my iPad is my “must have”. Checking Air bnb, using FaceTime, sending emails, checking flights, reading news, checking weather, playing games, watching entertainment, using streaming services. All in one convenient package. For most day to day stuff I would argue the iPad is better than a computer.

        However, trolls will be trolls.

        • I just use my phone most of the time now. I'm super lazy nowadays so instead of typing I just use my voice to make a message. It's significantly faster than typing out a message most of the time. Phone's nowadays have such a big screen anyway and you can just plug them into a monitor and use Dex if you like a desktop experience. A smartphone and tablets are computers anyway. They all have their own niches where they can perform certain tasks better over each other, just come down to the end users main use. My big gripe with iPads are the number of apps that make use of the extra screen real estate, too many poor blown up phone apps. For someone that travels a lot or just want a way to access multimedia, simple games, reading, web browsing and social media it's still hard to beat an iPad for those basic stuff.

    • +2

Down you go. No one plays candy crush anymore.

    • +4

it is absolutely nothing like a computer.

      It is literally a computer.

  • +4

ouuffff … this (A10 chip) or the ipad air (A12 chip)!

    ~~ edit

actually the specs are not much of a diff between the ipad and ipad air. ipad pro 11" looks nice but the leap in pricing is difficult to justify. sigh

    • I couldn’t go past it at $645 coming from an Air 2 (A9X) - I’m sure it won’t be slow ;-)

“up to two times faster than the top-selling PC in the US” (whatever that means!)

    • I'll pick iPad Air (2019) for a similar price anytime.

      • Is there an ipad air (2019) for a similar price?

        • +1

Not exactly, but I'll pick 64GB iPad Air (2019) to 128GB iPad (2019) anytime.

          • @O O: The price is closer than I thought given the weak AU dollar on the release date of 7th Gen budget iPad (2019) caused it to be priced at AU$529 instead of AU$469 like all the previous gen budget iPads.
In the US the 7th gen budget iPad (2019) was priced at US$329 like all previous gen’s.

    • Isn't ipad air also lighter?

      • +1

        By ~30 grams

        • +1

I'm not up to date with Apple stuff. But when ipad air first out, I thought it is called air because it is so light, by 400gr back then.

So if it is not the case anymore, what makes the difference?

          • @[Deactivated]: Better camera, bigger screen, lighter, better processor.
But if you don’t need those, iPad is a great choice

            • -1

@itstuan: Thanks, stupid naming if you ask me.

Should call it ipad, ipad pro and ipad pro max.

              • @[Deactivated]: It's all marketing. Give you the impression it is a lot lighter as a selling point. And it is lighter. When I compare the 2 models at Apple store, I was definitely leaning over the Air version (if I had couple hundreds bucks extra)
The pro versions targeting people who uses tablet for heavy work like graphic design & photo editing etc..It's competing with surface pro and the likes.

                • @itstuan: By 30grams??

                  • @[Deactivated]: It becomes significant when you’re holding long enough :)

                    • @itstuan: hmm surely not enough to be called Air. Unless the other one is called Smoke.

      • Wouldn't live up to its name if it wasn't.

    • +2

That’s a tough decision but no so much if you want the below -

The 2019 Air has the A12 Bionic processor with Neural Engine. The Air also has a laminated screen which doesn’t get any reflections compared to 2019 iPad.

In fact there is literally no difference apart from the ram and the screen in 2018 and 2019 iPad.

In short, 2018 iPad is more Ozbargainer types.

      2019 iPad is a waste.

2019 iPad Air 3 is a very good upgrade.

      • "bionic processor" and "neural engine" sound like something old mate Dyson would come up with, or stuff in a cheesy b grade sci fi movie

        • Maths extensions to process large matrices doesn’t sound as cool.

    • Yolo

    • Wait for the next iPad Pro to come out. May drop the price of the current 2018 model.

    • The difference in day to day performance is much better on the iPad Air w/ A12 Chip.

  • +1

Up to a hundred times faster than whatever soviets used to launch Sputnik into orbit…… at least, if not more

    • +1

      A lot more than that.

A 286 PC at 10mhz is several times faster than what NASA used to send people to the moon.

      • Yet we can't do it today, really jogs the noggin.

        • I guess programming languages got too bloated since then

  • +1

Deal only on the 128GB version, couldn't see a discount on the 32Gb (which is too small anyway IMHO).

The 32GB Wifi version is definitely cheaper compared to the Apple website.

$499 on Studio Proper vs $529 on Apple.com/au

    • +1

Sorry - I meant from the Apple Education price (it's the same). I'll edit post

  • Has anyone had experience with getting Officeworks / David Jones / Good Guys to price match Studio Proper ?

    • +1

Officeworks sell Studio Proper products - I don't think that would be a concern usually… but pre-order might be the killer??

I'd expect that you'd have to wait until they are officially in stock and then try, but no guarantee the price will remain.

    • +1

I haven't had a problem with them personally.
Happy to trust an Apple Authorised reseller and PayPal to cover my ass.

      https://au.trustpilot.com/review/www.studioproper.com

This deal is not on studioproper.com, it's studioproper.com.au

      • Both review sites are for the same company (au-trustpilot). Do you know them personally?

For $10-$20 difference I'd buy from Apple any day of the week, over a boutique online store, run as side-gig.

Handing over $ for a pre-order to such a small company is risky, given the relatively small $ saved.

        • Apple has cashback.

  • Whoa! reviews are mostly terrible. Has anyone purchased from this company had a positive experience?

    • Yep no problem, but a couple of years ago

  • -1

Whatever you do, don't buy a 10.5" ipad pro. They're designed defectively, most of them develop a white splotch an inch above the home button from internal pressures. the 12.9" 2nd gen is fine though.

    • +3

had mine since launch, no issues

    • +2

iPad 10.5 is already superseded by iPad pro 11. This new iPad 10.2 is 7th gen iPad meant to replace regular iPad 9.7 (2018).

      • +1

Yeh I guess the reason I say, is because technically there's no reason to go for one of these over a 10.5" ipad pro off ebay. Better everything!!! But that splotch is an issue many don't know about and might not even recognise on an ebay listing, and even if it doesn't have it, it might occur afterwards.

I managed to get a 12.9" 2nd gen 64gb, with cellular, with official keyboard, and apple pencil, for just $675 delivered though. It was in immaculate condition too. <3 ebay.

    • +1

Can concur, I’ve had 3 10.5 pros now. Great device but touchscreen has become faulty in each case.

Look on the refurb store and you’ll find many 10.5 pro units.

      • Couldn't you just ask Apple to refund your money?

        • Is that a serious question?

Were it possible it’d almost certainly have to go through consumer affairs who would likely consider replacement with a refurbed unit to be reasonable solution.

    • +1

Been using one daily since July 2017. No issues for me and still fast as new.

      • Well my issues were with the touchscreen (x3) and the guy above had an issue with a whitespot on the screen (several complaints on Whirlpool with this fault) so not sure why you're commenting on the speed.

As I said - great unit but I had a recurrent issue x3. Latest replacement's fine so far so here's hoping but slowdown was never a problem.

        • Not disputing your issues. Just stating I don't.

          • @EVA-01: K.

I’m otherwise happy with this model, great iPad.

  • This or a Samsung Galaxy Tab s6?

    • bit of a price difference between the 2. The Tab S5e is more in the same range as these iPads

  • +3

Can't believe they are still selling 32gb models.

    • can't believe year 2019 still no memory card supports

      512gb micro-sd under $100

      • +3

Yeah I agree. It'd be nice to see apple backtrack on that at some point maybe, but the icloud money too stronk.

      • So they can sell bigger storage model. Its just business.
Plus, having secondary storage can lead to some technical issue like corrupted sd card and you lose all important photos and start blaming Apple for it.

        • +1

Plus, having secondary storage can lead to some technical issue like corrupted sd card and you lose all important photos and start blaming Apple for it.

That's a dumb argument. What if the internal memory gets corrupted? What if your ipad dies and you can't retrieve the photos that are inside it? At least with an SD card, you can just eject the SD card.

        • While you're right about the up sell of storage, the other reason would be for security purposes.

          • @ThithLord: That's exactly right, thanks for pointing it out!

          • @ThithLord:

other reason would be for security purposes.

So, like every other server, desktop and laptop in the world?

IOS could auto-encrypt all content it writes so its content is secure, but external content isn’t. Nope, it’s all about the up sell and iCloud.

      • +3

        SD card is never coming.

        • Exactly this.

          They'll say it's for waterproofing

          They'll say it's for security

They won't say it's for profit

$200Billion cash on hand for Apple, they know how to make money

      • -1

They support memory cards with an adapter. A slot in a body that thin could seriously weaken its structural integrity.

  • There are way too many iPad lines. Some of them don't need to exist.

    • +3

The worst thing is how Apple don't number their versions. So, the iPad is just officially "iPad" on Apple's website and not "iPad 7".

This makes it hard to go looking for a bargain.

Is the "iPad" being sold for $400 on eBay, the new version or an old version ? It's so easy to make a mistake and buy the older version.

      • +2

I don't get why they dropped model numbers for just "iPad". If it's for simplicity it's not working, because anyone other than Apple is adding their own part numbers when referring to them. e.g. iPad 2017, iPad 2018, or gen 5, gen 6. Even if Apple doesn't want to use those distinguishers, they are still necessary and everyone else is going to add them. They exist for a reason. It's to tell each model apart.

      • I know it doesn’t make sense but Why are you having a go at Apple iPad when the Samsung Galaxy Tab is pretty much the same story? Galaxy Tab A10 for example. There’s must be a reason why they ditched the number.
One way to tell them apart is looking at the specs.

        • A10 is a part number.

Unless Samsung starts calling all their tablets Galaxy Tab, which has yet to happen, this isn't remotely the same thing.

          • +1

@lostn: What does Samsung call its tablets? Just curious.
A10 stands for slower version of their tablet in 10" size, Tab A 7 is 7" tablet, Tab A 8 is their 8". Definitely does not indicate which year or generation they are made.
Its S version means higher models, like the ipad Air

            • @itstuan: Exactly what you just said.

              Tab S4, S5e, S6, etc.

They don't simply called it Galaxy Tab and nothing else after it or it would get confusing. Especially if you're making an order over the phone and say "give me the Galaxy Tab." Then they would have to ask which one?

Apple tried this as early as 2012 when they called the gen 3 iPad "the new ipad". No one else called it that. Everyone else used iPad 3. A year later when the next iPad released, it would make no sense to still call the previous one "the new ipad". They dropped that idea and went back to a differentiator, which in this case was "iPad with Retina Display". Still not a good name because if you search ebay for "iPad with Retina Display", eh… That and the fact that "the new iPad" also had a retina display already.

So yeah I think the idea is dumb, but Apple will survive it and the rest of us will have to deal with it.

            • @itstuan: They have the A series and they have the S series. But then they have also introduced an SE tablet as well which falls somewhere in between the A and S series.

And if you went to look at specs the 2018 A series looks better on paper than the 2019 version. In 2018 version they have quad speakers, 3gb of ram, 10.5 inch screen. The 2019 version, stereo speakers, 2gb of ram, smaller screen. So yeah… Lots of confusion for the consumer.

The 2019 iPad is basically the 2018 version with a slightly bigger screen and pins to connect a keyboard. I think Apple will update this version two times then abandon it. Because the lack of RAM and the old A10 chip. The iPad Air 2, iPhone 6s etc must be on the chopping blocks. Can't see those devices getting iOS 14. The A10 is next in line after those devices.

  • -3

People don't store that many stuff on iPad. It is all backup into the cloud.

    • +1

is the cloud free and unlimited ?

      • -1

Nothing is free when you are with Apple.

        • -2

Nothing is free when you are with any one else either. Do you not pay for Google Drive and other cloud services?

          • @itstuan: Nah, I stick with free tier dropbox

          • @itstuan: No, never. Just pay for Gmail storage $25/year.
I don't use/pay iCloud/iTunes/Music, just backup on my Mac on monthly basis.
            No Netflix or Spotify either.
My X is 256 GB but 240GB+ is always free lol.

    • +2

Cloud won't do you any good when you have no internet access.

      • +1

Not much good for apps either.

      • -2

Wifi is everywhere these days. airport, cafes, library etc….
But if you find having constant internet access on the go, go for the cellular version with a sim. Why are we debating about this?

        • Wish it were in the toilet at work, I can only get 1 bar of 3g and no wifi :(

    • +2

Not actually true for a lot of people, especially if you are travelling.
