YouTube Premium INR 129/Month (~AU $2.94) via YouTube India (VPN Required)

6310

Finally signed up to this deal. Noticed that it is over 6 months since it's been posted so posting it again for those who weren't aware. Impressed with the service so far.

Full credit to Mitr for the original deal, title and description.

Google has finally launched Youtube Premium in India for INR 129(AUD ~2.60) and Family Membership for INR 189 (AUD ~3.80).
Comes with Youtube Music, No Ads in Youtube as well as Google Play Music.

https://india.googleblog.com/2019/03/introducing-youtube-mus…

This cost cheaper that was posted earlier for using Russian subscription option posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414890

I have signed up after cancelling Russian plan with my Macquarie Debit card so no conversion charges.

Everything included in post by @Dealbot applies here too.

Youtube Premium will give you access to -
• Ad-free videos: Watch videos without interruptions
• Save offline: Save videos and songs on your mobile device to watch offline
• Background play: Keep videos or music playing when using other apps or when your screen’s off
• Audio mode: Listen to audio only on the YouTube Music app
• Google Play Music Subscription (when available in your country) is included at no additional cost

Current pricing is $14.99 per month in Australia. This workaround should work for new and existing customers.

Again, the trick to making this work is having access to a VPN service. If you're signed up to one then the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

Instructions -
1. Connect a VPN to the server India (I connected to Bangalore)
2. Click on Paid Memberships(youtube.com), then click on Learn more.
https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships

Enter Indian address and pay by credit card.
Termination takes place under this link(music.youtube.com)

    I've got this. So good

    • +13

Is great but I have to get used with Indian songs now.

      • +2

yea it's great but is there anyway we can remove the recommended indian stuff?

        • +7

I have this and don't get anything Indian recommended.

        • Change the location settings to Australia. Works for me on the Nvidia

      • +4

        Indian metal?

      • +1

I get zero recommendations regarding India? have had this for months now

        • +2

If you use google play music, the top charts and radio stations are all India

      • Never had the issue. I believe it's a 'radio' thing

      • What you talking about willis

      • +1

YouTube creators get paid thousands / millions for playing games, doing silly pranks, opening Kinder Surprises, etc.

I'm sure they'll survive or can get a real job if they start losing subscribers

      • And the views are happening in Australia, just making the subscription purchase in India

        • I suggest you recheck your information, it is wrong (a good friend makes a living off YouTube).

          1. Very hard to "make thousands/millions for playinng games" etc. (otherwise everybody would do it)
          2. It is actually a real job, a very hard one at that (you have to keep producing new content and keep/grow your subscribers). For many its also a side hustle, they have a "real job" but they should still be somewhat renumerated for their efforts (which is often massive).
          3. I don't think the views happen in Australia as far as YT is concerned, since you are paying a subscription fee as a person from India and part of that gets paid to the creators of what you watch. (YT would be at a loss if it was charging you a fraction and still pay the creators the same)

If you're not worried about the big channels not making some money off of you that's fine of course. But if you're watching some small channels then it could make sense for you to want to support them.

I don't really understand the negs to be honest.

          • @AncientWisdom:

When I'm on YouTube on my phone using my cellular data, it knows I'm in Australia. When I use my computer with the VPN, it thinks I'm in India and can differentiate the two.

Trying to make money off YouTube is a choice, no one is making your mate trying to make a living off YouTube

Very hard to "make thousands/millions for playinng games" etc. (otherwise everybody would do it)

Of course it is, and that's why so many people try to do it in hope they will get rich from it. Like I'm sure your mate would love to be one of those few who makes millions off YouTube

            • +2

@Danstar: Not exactly sure which part of my suggestion you're riling up about. If you don't care about content creators getting renumerated then it wasn't relevant to you. Some people might care about whether their favorite creators keep making content and wouldn't know that this would affect them. Hence the "FYI".

  • Signed up to family a few weeks ago, very easy to do.

I wish the Spotify Phillipines worked as easy as this, not that it matters as YouTube also have a music app now.

    • I got Spotify Phillipines, what do you find difficult?

      • +2

I use Spotify India, cost me like $23 a year

        • How do you pay for it? I tried paying through my American express and it immediately gave me an error telling me the country and card country don't match!

          • @rhymingboxer1: Opps, I got my brother to pay for it for me in India. I made a new account and gave him details to sign in and buy a yearly subscription

            • @letmesingh: Can you buy a yearly subscription? I thought YT only offered monthly payment.

        • yep me too.
setup brand new paypal account, switched spotify to PH, still having issues adding a credit card to paypal.

i don't care too much now, going to use youtube music and see how it goes

      • how did you pay for Spotify Philipines?…wont let me…is there a way around it…i tried a debit and a credit card but both declined due to wrong country…Also Paypal did not work for same reason
        Cheers

        • I had this problem at first, until I tried a different street address.. Even though it said the payment method was declined, it was due to the address being registered against someone else I think, as I first attempted to use the address listed in the OP.

    • Keeping saying my payment is not valid in this store and I have tried two different cards already without success, any ideas?

      • I would also like to find out!
Is there a similar way for Apple Music I wonder..

        • Figured out myself, simply avoid signing it over your iOS device, work it on android or through Pc works like a charm.

    • There is Google Play Music, which is like spotify. Use this instead of youtube music.

  • +9

Can you go back to aus servers once you paid?

    • -8

I couldn't figure out how. I believe it uses your address?

All my recommendations and radio stations got screwed and some songs were missing. So I completely screwed myself and instead of paying $17 for family, I'm now paying $22 (as they increased the price for anyone that joined family after June last year.

      Be warned.

If you can get it back to an Aussie subscription and still pay $2.70, please share how!

      • +4

All my music recommendation are fine, just import over your old playlist(if you have one) and after a couple of sonngs the recommendation and radio station are fine.

      • +1

If you are on an individual plan you can change the address but then you will have to pay the Australian price. It better if you create a dummy Google account and join the family plan. Then for each account, you want to add to the plan, create a new payment profile for each account using the same address in India. Once you accept the invite on the other account you can delete the India payment profile and still have access to the service.

        Edit:
Once your location is changed, Indian content is no longer recommended on both youtube and music.

        • Do you mean "new payment profile" is "add payment method" to each account to be joined to the family plan?

You then "add credit or debit card" using the same address in India before the dummy Google account sends the invite?

    • +2

Correct. After the first payment it all good. You will be charged $2.70 a month no matter where you live.

    • +11

There is no such thing as Aussie servers. All this is, is geological pricing. Youtube is YouTube

I have this and don’t use a VPN on any of my personal devices

      • -1

But are the charts and recommendations local to India?

        • Only in Google Play Music, which is being phased out AFAIK.

        • -1

Only if you’re using your VPN located in India.

If you’re using your Australian IP address, you’ll see “Australian” content

      • +1

      • i had signed up yt india last month and got 3 months trial free. I have a question, after my trial period lasts, do i have to use vpn again for processing payment to get charged $2.70 p/m?

    • +4

Only need VPN for initial sign-up, then can drop back to normal connection to actually use the service, it doesn't check or care, seven for family subscription.

    • +2

Yes, you can turn off the VPN and still have access to the service.

      • Is it just me or is everyone receiving more indian content in the Google News app. I thought the service only affects YouTube and Music. Location is set to Australia.

    • wait so i can just change my location back to aus after i pay?

      • +2

        Yes.

I use YouTube Vanced but I have this too. But because I have YouTube Vanced, I kinda haven't really bothered to figure out how YouTube Premium works properly…

I think the main advantage that YouTube Premium gives me over Vanced is access to "exclusives", and ability to download files for offline viewing which are available for a limited period of time, otherwise the rest is much the same, I think?

Anyone else in a similar position.

    • +20

Also gives you Google Music and YouTube Music.

Also gives you premium access on all your devices and smart tvs. Vanced is fine if you only watch on an Android phone.

This is the best $3 I spend each month.

      • +1

        Thanks.

Also gives you Google Music and YouTube Music.

Are these not free by default though?

Also gives you premium access on all your devices and smart tvs. Vanced is fine if you only watch on an Android phone.

Yea ok makes sense. Good point.

        • Are these not free by default though?

Google Music is Google's Spotify equivalent. YouTube music is video clips and live performances. Neither are included free ordinarily.

          • @ash2000: Youtube Music will now be the music service going forward so would not bother with GPM now.

            • +3

@fiveferrari: Youtube Music is no where near finished, im sticking with GPM until they shut it down.

I will be switching to my own Plex server for music once that happens.

              • +1

                100x this
I use GPM,it's great, works well (not as good a playlists or suggrstions as Spotify but close)

YouTube music app is terrible. If/when GPM app is killed I'll sure be thinking hard about where I stream my music from

      • There's vanced editions of Youtube Music too. Never paid a cent for premium and get most of the features for Youtube and Youtube music. Only ever use my phone so I'm fine with that.

    • Thank you for alerting me to the existence of YouTube Vanced. I giggled when I realised the pun. It's "ad-free". Then I waited a bit and decided to post this message to OzBargain. And now we're here.

    • I also use Vanced on my tablet.

For my television I use Smart Youtube (https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/) which I installed on a Vodafone TV.

And on my computer I just use Adblock.

      Still should work.

My YTP is going strong. Grab a family account and sell the spots here. Ends up being $8 a year pp.

Only real downside is that the charts in GPM will be Indian.

      • Honestly I'm fine with that where can I sign up to one of these YouTube family premium spots.

$8 a year per person is amazing for the convenience of YouTube premium.

        • I noticed you put it up in the Classifieds. Should find one there.

Or someone in this thread might Pm you.

          • @SnowDragon: Thanks yeah I just decided to put a classified up as there were no open non expired ones.

      • They check each person to see whether they are in the same household, on a monthly basis. That prevents resale.

        • +1

They claim they do. My OzB family is still going strong. And many others are as well.

Perhaps eventually they'll cut us off but for $8 it's worth the risk.

          • @SnowDragon: i used a dummy account to sign up YTP family as the manager (via indian VPN) and invited my ordinary gmail account, but it keeps saying the ord email is at a different location than the manager.

I deleted all existing payment methods in Ord gmail and added one with an indian address. still gave me the same message when i tried to accept the invitation.

Can you pls share show you set up your family plan? ta

    • You must be barely poor

    • So…?

  • +2

Has anyone been banned for using this? I’m worried because my google account has everything. I’ve signed up for a family plan using a new account and put my own account in as a family member, I hope that will shield me somewhat.

    • +12

      No. No one.

      • +2

That right. No One got banned.

    • +1

I’ve created a new email address for this purpose. My main account is shielded from anything that could eventuate.

    • Been on this for the past 6 months. nothing yet. But you might need to create a new account with indian vpn

    • I've been using it for 6+ months no issues, kids using it on 2 ipads and missus on her phone.

  • +1

I did this last time. But after enabling the subscription (by changing address to a random Indian one) I am facing difficulty with finding some apps or installing apps from play store. Example: 7-Eleven Fuel. I was not able to search it in my play store. If I search in google and go to the app page in play store it says 'This app is incompatible with all of your devices.'. I am using Galaxy Note 10. I think the address update is restricting me (region restriction) to install certain apps.
Anybody faced same issue? Any work around? Thanks.

    • maybe just sideload the apk?

      • +1

Yes, I did install it by downloading apk later.

    • +1

Nah no workaround except to download the apk files. It's a royal PITA. Google, unlike apple, only let you change region on your account every 12 months so you're stuck for a little while. I thought I could just download the apk for any aussie specific apps on my phone but forgot that my sony and samsung smart tvs are also hooked up to my google account so lost access to some of my catch up tv apps.

      • Is there a reliable and safe site that you can download apks from?

    • +1

Google has a restriction on how many times you can change your billing information (once a year). As your google services are linked to the country address that you assigned for billing info, you can only use the Australian google store/pay etc. a year after from when you changed the address to India. However if there are any apps you need, you can just download it from a third party apk source.

    • +8

… I kinda feel like this should be higher.
It changes your ntire google region, which may change the apps you are able to install and other geographic settings!

      • Does the family membership required other members to be in same country?

Wondering if a dedicated account can be made with Indian address then real accounts can be left as Aus region.

        • +1

Yes. The other threads show people having issues that they couldnt add family from another geographic region…

          • +1

@BluBoy: Other family members need to be connected to 'india' via VPN when they accept the invitation to join the YouTube premium family.

    • +4

Weird. I was an Australian YouTube premium subscriber (family) up until the day the deal was posted last time.
      - I logged into and cancelled my existing plan from my phone
      - Logged into the Indian PIA server, went to the signup page, put in the hotel address that the OP from the original deal posted, put my credit card details in, it accepted
      - I logged out and disconnected from the Indian PIA server, logged back into YouTube and hey presto I've got a premium family plan for about $3.60 per month.
With the exception of the odd recommended new Indian album release on GPM, literally nothing has changed. I get notifications of artists playing nearby in Melbourne, all apps work fine (I just downloaded the 7/11 fuel app and it installed and found my location without an issue), and my google one subscription is fine as well.

      • +1

That's same situation as me (except I used my company's local office address). Yet to see anything odd pop up though vs. Spotify which emphasises local music from the region I am signed up in.

    • +2

Hmm i dont have this issue yet - for me it created an additional google pay profile, and its only active for youtube according to that. Google play store also uses my AU profile at the moment.

  • +1

I'm assuming you don't need to continue using an Indian VPN when watching videos? Wonder how effective Pihole (on the Raspberry Pi) is with YouTube…

    • +4

Correct, just once to sign up.

      • +1

        Cheers. 👍

    • +2

Not at all. After you signed up, you can turn off VPN. I have been using it since last Nov and been to 5 different countries without any issues. Also, no issues with previous Russian address.

      • Nice, good to know. Thank you. 👍

  • +1

I’ve been using YouTube music a lot since this deal

  • Does netflix india have similar deal?

    • -1

Netflix is not a deal. Subscriptions costs are same even after conversion. You could try turkey location though.

      • +1

Turkey is 7 bucks a month! Middle tier sub
