It looks like the sale fare is only 1 way… eg Sydney to Osaka and not Osaka to Sydney… so, return fares aren't just double the one way fare… it's likely to be more than that.

    • +2

Plugged in a few dates myself and return fare was near equal to the sale fare advertised

  • should put on title "From $420.00" because Sydney return is $580.00

Has anyone flown to Japan on Jetstar, eg. how were the meals, seat comfort and space, service, seat allocations, check in, any other relevant things?

    • +1

We flew on Jetstar once to Osaka.
It was Sydney via Cairns. Was a killer coming back as we arrived at Cairns around 4-5am and had to wait a few hours for the connecting flight back to Sydney

We upgraded to Starclass when we were at the airport so got all the entertainment set/amenities pack and food included, which is the same as what you get(buy) in economy

      • +1

How did you upgrade to Starclass for only $100?

        • i asked before checking in. That was a few years ago mind you, and we never flew Jetstar again, because of the Cairns stop over

    • +1

      Yep I have.
      Planes/cleanliness everything seemed fine.
Think Qantas group know to try a bit harder on the Japan run as the local detail standards are different (higher) than you average.
Can't remember the meals but I usually bring my own food as I reckon the crap food that I wouldn't normally eat is half of the Jetlag feeling.

So overall not Qantas/JAL service levels but no worries at all.

EDIT: Also very few Bogans make it over to Japan. Thats half the negative experience with Jetstar - well it is out of Avalon :P

    • Bring your own food, but the flight and staff were fantastic!

I flew to Osaka on Jetstar September last year, plane comfortable, practically empty, but you did need to pay for meals separate and they had actually run out of some items, so would definitely fly again, but would BYO food.

    • I went on the same sale back in June this year. No real problems except:

They rescheduled our arrival so we got in much later than planned, and got to the hotel at about 1am - but was part of the adventure.

They didn't tell us that when flying back to aus and passing through another airport (we came back through Cairns) - you can't take carry-on duty free liquids. SO BUY AND PACK ALCOHOL IN YOUR MAIN BAGS - You can't bring it back via Cairns (if that's where they route you).

Other than that - the plan was maybe 25-40% full - my partner stretched out across the full middle aisle and slept the whole flight home.

I would recommend taking advantage of this offer - it's cheap and Japan is very much business as usual (even according to the locals we spoke to about it).

      • also - it cost us just under $1k for 2 people return from GC to Osaka (for reference).

Pack your own snacks and an Ipod / laptop whatever and sit back. For the price I just can't complain.

  • We flew with them a couple of years abck and will again next year when the sale dates fit in with travel dates.

I despise domestic Jetstar flights but was impressed with the Japan flights, especially for the price.

  • Flew with them last year and they were fine. Better than some Qantas international flights I've been on. GC-Osaka return for about $460. Doing the exact same later this year, got flights for around $500 return in their birthday sale. Took our own food on board. It's not that long of a flight anyway.

  • What sort of food you guys normally bring on a 6hr+ flight? I tried once with a couple bread rolls but found they were too cold to eat. End up bought some hot meals on the way back. That was from Syd to Singapore. With domestic routes (or even Sydney to Auckland), no problem with just some snacks but not with internation flights.

    • box of museli bars works fine i reckon. Compact enough, not noisy.

  • I've flown with Jetstar to Japan 3 times. As other commenters have pointed out, bring your own food and snacks but other than that the only thing you need to be mindful of is a higher chances of delays and cancellations.

A couple of times the 1st leg of my flights were cancelled or delayed which meant I only JUST made the connecting flight from GC to Japan.

However this is the associated risk you take with budget airlines. Everything else about the flight was fine. The flight crew also tend to be of a higher quality as they look after more Japanese travellers, and so need to up their service standards.

Also if it's a return flight, make sure you load up on food and snacks from a Japanese convenience store on the way back. If the poor sap next to you bought their food on the flight they'll be green with envy!

    ok, i just tried it
adelaide to gold coast then fly to tokyo return trip
    with 20kg
    344+503.95=847.95aud
not so cheap compare with last year september
    we had $600 with jetstar

    • You have to stay overnight in GC though don't you?

From what I can tell Adelaide to Japan on Jetstar doesn't really work.

I flew twice last year with the deathstar once to osaka and once to Tokyo.
The last time my flight was cancelled back to the gold coast, Deathstar put me up in a 5 star hotel near the airport gave me meal vouchers and payed for all my transfers (prob worth more than the $220 I payed for the tix).
Cant fault them, its like a very long domestic flight.
Will prob. fly again later this year if they have more of the sales.

Wow, two negs for that comment??? OzB'ers really are becoming a dull bunch! :(

  • Last time i flight from Syd to Osaka via GC.
1 month before the flight, i was advised that the flight would be to stopover in Tokyo before arriving in Osaka.

Including the delay, my whole joruney was like:
schedule boarding time AEST: 0900 (ended up delayed 1 more hr)
arrival time is Osaka approx: 110:00 (= AEST 0200)
    17 hours in total.

a direct flight would probably cost you twice as much but you will save 50% of time….

Perfect time to go in October. I went for a month in October last year and the weather was great the whole time. Paid $1100 for flights though…

I just booked my flights for 3 weeks this October (total $650) because I saw this link on OzB. Thanks OP!

  • I wish this was flights to Narita from Sydney…also the dates are just off from what I need.

  • Are you able to choose your seat allocation when booking?

  • +1

still waiting out for jan/feb dates :)

  • I swear these Japan sales never include Sydney to Tokyo. It's always Osaka

    • Its not that hard to get to tokyo lol Thou it is 100$ more :\

I'm confused, tickets back from Japan are still full price yeah?

  • wow i'm very tempted. $630 sydney to osaka return. What are the expenses like there?

    • +1

Japan isn't as expensive at it seems. They've been suffering deflation for almost 20 years and costs haven't gone up. A good hotel won't set you back more than $100 a night. Food is pretty cheap and transport is very cheap. A JR pass lets you travel all over the country for a few hundred dollars a week.

  • I traveled to Japan with Jetstar early last year. The trip to japan was ok (though starclass was not worth it), the trip back was a disaster though. read about it at:
    http://www.dontflyjetstar.com/complaints/pathetic-jetstar-ma…

Though I have to say at $209 to get to Japan, I would put up with nearly anything.
