I've been keeping a close eye on the galaxy S II and nearly pulled the trigger on the Optus deal with 2 months free ($5 for the phone $59 for the cap) but I see Voda are getting pretty aggressive on this handset now. No 2 months free but I can get it for $5 for phone and $49 for plan and with 1.5gb data and $500 of stuff its well within what I need.

sir, you have neglected to finish your sentence. good day.

      • +13

his vodafone internet dropped out. :p

  • +8

    Yeah, but its Vodafail!

  • +3

you should've pulled the trigger on optus

voda is only getting aggressive coz everyone is leaving to a better carrier

    • +1

this deal is nothing compared to the previous Legend deal, sure the legend is mid level android but then the Galaxy S and Desire HD deals were much better than these ones. IIRC both came to ~700 total on a 12 month contract.

      • To say that Optus is better than another carrier is a joke… their network is complete rubbish. Such a shame that Telstra have such a premium on only this phone.

        • +2

Only this phone? Telstra have a nice premium or inflated MRO on the majority of their handsets. I think the Samsung Galaxy S is another good example of price inflation on Telstra.

Telstra arguably do have the best network, and users are willing to pay for it.

i don't get it, so how much is it?

    • +2

get it for $5 for phone and $49 for plan and with 1.5gb data and $500 of stuff

  • +5

i cannot emphasise enough how bad the vodafone network is. It is slow to non-existent. Their promised network upgrades are a joke

    • they are just following what steve jobs does

      -the network upgrades are magical
      -it's revolutionary
      -you're using your phone wrong
      -the signals are everywhere

      • +1

        Oh, and one more thing….

        • Boom.

      • Everyone disses him, but he's the one that doesn't even take a salary and still earns more than 99.99%+ of people on the earth.

  • +3

put $49 + $5 per month in title. Save 200 is wayyy too misleading.

  • +1

aside from voda bashing, this is a good bargain.

Don't do it. I got the Desire HD on Vodafone. Great plan, great phone… But the coverage and data speeds are crap.
I also has unlimited international SMS, turns out I can't even sms to many countries since Vodafone don't have an agreement with those carriers. Gonna try to get out of the deal. I plug in a Optus or Telstra SIM and everything works just fine.

    • +1

yea except your DHD is like mine DOESNT have support for 850mhz band which they are rolling out

  • Please put VODA in title and mention the $54 per month cap.

  • +5

    Virgin has this for

$5 per month on Fair Go $49

    $400 cap credit per month

    Unlimited text 24/7*

    2GB monthly data allowance

Min cost over 24 months is $1296

    with 3 months free access

    • what do people think of the virgin deal? i know virgin are on the optus network but does that mean that coverage and reliability is the same as optus?

      • +1

yes it's the same as optus

  • +2

is it really that bad? I'm using a vodafone prepay sim (only arrived in Oz last month) and I haven't had any network probs? Mind you i'm in and around Sydney

    • do you use data?

      • Data is where the Voda network really fails.

    • +1

I tested vodafone with a prepaid sim before I signed up for the HTC Desire HD. I got 3 or 4 bars everywhere I travelled so I thought they would be ok. I didn't actually use the service much in the few days I tested. I still get 3 or 4 bars most of the time on my Desire HD. I just get really crap speeds & constant timeouts on websites. And missed calls when the phone is on & right next to me. However I tested with an Optus sim & all is good (in Perth).

Unless you're using your prepaid sim for data-intensive tasks you're not really testing what vodafone will be like with this phone (assuming you plan to use it for webcentric tasks).

send some sms to your friends, they might get it few hours later and then keep receiving the same sms every few hours. Or they might get it without any issues. Its pretty random.

      • same thing happens to my THREE(3) networks!

    Vodafone? No thanks …

  • +2

For those already with Vodafone, I suppose you can factor in that they are offering 10% off the access fee if you already have a service with them. Also $84 available from MoneyBackCo, therefore, making an additional $201.60 in savings.

  • Good deal. I got the phone 2 weeks ago for free on the 49 after negotiators and love the phone and network.

Also remember to use nrma discount for another 10% off

  • +1

Vodafail will get no reception inside home or shopping centre, you will be lucky if you get connection even outside the building.

  • +1

Thanks but no thanks, Vodafone can piss off with their shitty network. Just complained to the TIO and Voda let me out of the contract for my 2 plans I had with them, now I'm going to Telstra. Sure, I may be paying ~$80 a month for a similar amount of call credits etc, but Voda's network is so shit that I'd be prepared to pay even more to get a quality service.

Good deal for those that don't mind redialing a number after being in a conversation for 15 seconds

    • Same here, just in middle of finalising TIO complaint. Have been offered exit by Vodafone, but they want a fortune to keep my handset.

Telstra I can't wait. No more 5 minute wait to get google homepage in Sydney CBD, no more call drops while walking across Martin Place, no more Vodafone call centre!

this is an absolutely brilliant phone, but i just want to echo the others and say vodafone are the absolute worst. if you plan on calling customer service, better have a good movie on because i was on hold for a good 30 minutes (and apparently this isnt that bad compared to others). their data speeds are awful. you dont know if you're connected, and dont think "maybe its the area" nope, its arbitrary as asnything; you could be in a park in the CBD with no reception, or in a wine cellar in the bush - toss a coin to see where you'll get good reception.

calls and messages not going through are plentiful. it really beggars belief.

its cheaper, but if you actually use the phone for intended purposes, steer away from these clowns.

  • djchuckles, are you associated with Vodafone (e.g. work there?).

    • I doubt.. He's on prepaid.. Sure Voda aren't that miser..
2 posts and both about voda sounds more like a desperate attempt to switch from prepaid to postpaid..

  • In defense of vodafone (and no, I don't work for them). I've been with them for about a year now, and they HAVE certainly improved over the last couple of months, and even to begin with they haven't been that bad in my experience.

Yes, occasional dropouts. Yes, data speeds are variable. Yes, there are some places that don't have reception.
Name one carrier in the world that doesn't suffer from the same? I've been with telstra and had the same. I've been with dodo and had the same.
I live in Sydney but travel a lot & haven't ever been put out somewhere where it just didn't work. Used their data for a whole month in SA and always had a reasonable connection. Travelled Syd-Adl and had about 3 areas where I had no reception (previously with telstra, and had the same areas with no reception).

No doubt I'll be negged or laughed at, but I recently recommended to a workmate to join vodafone on our plan because I think the hoohaa is just hoohaa.

I commute on the Sydney's north shore line and have found the Vodafone's data connection to be absolutely atrocious. There are may be 3 to 5 spots between Berowra and Wynyard where you can get a decent speed, but most of the time you get no data connection at all. I have also found that the network has got worse in the last couple of months. Also, when using my Optus 3G modem I get much better coverage and higher speeds than with my Voda mobile.

      • Same train line for me, I had to resort to sitting in top of train carriage to get even small level of coverage, Vodafone is a disgrace, they have been robbing Sydney people for some time falsely selling a product that doesn't offer a service.

Very soon I'll be rid of them.

My wife signed up for the nexus 29 cap and she was with 3 previously.
This is what she told me: "OMG, I can't believe there is another company worst than 3"
The overseas-based customer service is insanely hopeless.

    • +1

little did she know, 3 and voda is the same thing

      • even the call centre, is the same?
as that's what putting me on hold for 30mins too (using THREE/3)

  • They have improved a lot since last year! anyway thanks to vodafail, I got quite good deals with them for my Desire HD, Galaxy S2 and Legend!

  • I got offer from vodaphone call center, just $49 + $10 sign only 12 months contract, to get this handset. is it good deal?

    • wow sounds decent, i wud say go for it if u are ok with vodafail

    • interesting .. i was quoted a lot higher today when i spoke to them today over the phone ..

      dodgy :(

    • name of rep or your order details( I dunno if it is private information or if it can be used to identify you)

      • I called the 'upgrades' department two different times (once via direct 1300 number, once via 155 and being put through), one time was offered a $49 cap with $5 handset repayments, the other time $49 cap with $10 handset repayments (both times for a nexus S on 12 months). the second guy said he couldn't do any better than that, even though I told him I had been offered better previously.

        It seems to be random.

  • HTC Desire HD: signed it last year for 12 months contract (49cap+$25phone), free 3 months access + half price next 3 months access+10%off monthly
Galaxy S2: just signed it for 12 months contract (29cap+35phone), $50 credit+10% off monthly
So they were cheaper than outright price at the time I signed! Thanks to Vodafail :)

    • HOW?

    OzBargain!!!

  • Can anyone who has gone from an existing Vodaphone account (eg on Iphone 3GS like me) to the Galaxy S2 comment on if they get better reception on this phone ?
I want to upgrade my 3GS to S2 and would like to go to Telstra but cost difference is big. I was hoping access to the 900MHz network might improve reception at my home with is ordinary at moment.
If I could get a $49 + $10 deal on S2 with voda as mentioned by someone above over 12 months then I would be quite happy.

  • Ah, so people who get the cheap vodafone plans with SGS 2 only get it because they've suffered considerably in the past with their dodgy network?
Makes me feel a lot better.

  • If any one doesnt like on Vodafone. Now its introduced SGS II in THREE.
    http://shop.three.com.au/mobile-details/samsung-i900-galaxy-…
    Min Cap is 29$ for 24 months. i;e; $1176 .
Only reason i am specifying this here is I have experienced vodafone network.

  • Should have gone for 3 months free, $0 extra per month on the optus $49 per month business plan. All you need is an ABN.
