[Near New] Vodafone TV 4K - $53.34 Express Delivered @ Original_accessories_au eBay

520
POTTER3

The product is in a 'Near New' condition and very similar to a new item with only very minimal hair line marks on the body of the item.

Seems to be a popular one around here.

Does FTA via aerial, has solid remote and an ethernet port.

I'm up to 2 now and really considering a third.

Only problem is no direct access to apps for Prime Video, Kayo or Foxtel, but I believe you can access these via Kodi Add Ons.

Additional 3% off currently with eBay code but normal price of $54.99 is also pretty good.

  • Will this play movies off a USB?
    Cheers.

    • +1

      yea it is

    • +3

Need to install an app off the Play Store like VLC or MX Player for better codec support than is inbuilt.

    • +2

      Yes. One USB 2.0 slot.

      • Thank you all for the help đź‘Ť
Just wanted to check as I have a Telstra TV and that doesn’t pick up my USB 3 Sandisk flash drive.

        • +2

Probably because it needs to be formatted to NTFS. It's probably formatted to some filesystem which the Telstra TV being a Roku device does not recognise. I think not all devices would recognise such filesystems for example such as exFAT since that's a proprietary Microsoft filesystem and it probably doesn't recognise FAT32 either. I bet the default filesystem on Sandisk USB 3 flash drives is FAT32.

So make sure that all your drives are formatted to NTFS for compatibility.

  • Does it play the H265 video format?

    • +3

Yup plays everything. This box is amazing!

      • Only problem is it won't pass through compressed audio.

        • +1

@ ssquid: I had issues with audio pass-through using VLC but then I started using Kodi for video playback and it has audio pass through options, no audio issues since.

          • @billy_bob: Nah, it's well known that kodi has issues passing through nearly all compressed audio types with this box. There are some old special (unsupported) builds that work, but current ones do not and the kodi devs refuse to use the same methods that the old builds use.

It's 72 courier delivered with two year warranty from voda

This. Silly to go second hand.

    • 20 bucks is 20 bucks, even when it's only 19.66.

On a side note they sound like they don't want to take returns but have been told they have to as the ACL wording is in the ad. Having said that my guess is these boxes at unlikely to have many issues, maybe people who have bought them can comment?

      • +1

I rather pay the extra $20 to not have the headache of resorting to ACL for replacement/fix.

      • +1

There's an issue with their HDMI handshake. When on standby or left on, and the display is off. The next time you turn the display on, there's a good chance it won't display via HDMI.

You need to physically unplug the power plug to the Vodafone tv and plug it back in.

        • I have the same issue. Do you know if it affects all units? Would there be any point getting it replaced?

          • @shiznit: Sorry, no idea if there's a fix. I've hardly used it, and just unplug and plug back in.

    • Is it the same price in store?

      • Yes it is, but may not have as much luck from franchised stores (stock levels).

  • +3

You can sideload the Amazon Prime Video app but you do require a fast internet connection for it to stream smoothly. It wouldn't work well for my 4G mobile broadband connection but is ok on 50/20 NBN

If anyone is looking for a good Android box this is great!

Tons of information on the whirlpool forum. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3kwv7jj3

I have had it for nearly a year now and it hasn't let me down.

    Chromecast feature works perfectly.

It plays 4k and HDR and Plex runs great

Easy to Instal Kodi and any other programs you would usually use for streaming services. I can't recommend this enough.

    • Hey mate, do you know if acts as a full Chromecast and you can add it to speaker groups with other Google/Nest Home devices?

      • It cannot mate

        • Ah dang, thanks!

        • I can cast to it from my pc and phone. and it appears in my google home devices.

      • Pretty sure it works as a full Chromecast. Yes you can add it to Google Home. See the snapshot here: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/71705/69666/photostudi…

Ignore the tick and cross markups on the snapshot as it's a old snapshot that I marked up for for something else.

        • Can you add it to a speaker group with your living room speaker to play the same audio through both at the same time?

          • @Hargain Bunter: Sorry I didn't quite follow .. yes you can stream audio to it but where would you like to play the sound output as this box is be connected to the TV via HDMI and then, let's say, further to your HiFi Receiver …

So you mean you want to stream audio to HiFi Receiver via the TV?

        • +1

Android TV with built in Chromecast cannot be added to Speaker Groups.
It's stupid, but that's the way it is.

    • Chromecast feature works perfectly

unless you try and cast foxtel, which doesnt work (jittery) for some reason

  • So 2nd hand, but identical to this one?

    warranty?

    • +1

      From eBay listing:

WARRANTY: This item comes with 6 months return to base warranty.

      I took a chance.

  • I have one of these for my bedroom TV. It works great, but I have had one problem: I have some HD mkv files for a TV series on Plex and the Vodafone box can't play them without weird choppy stutters in the video. It's not the mkvs themselves because they play flawlessly on Plex on my main Samsung TV. And it's not my internet speed because again they play great on other TV. The only workaround to be able to play them is to manually change the setting on each episode to convert to 480p 1.5mbps and then they play fine. Bit annoying for that one particular series I'm watching at the moment but otherwise very happy with the VTV box.

    • Ethernet to your VTV? If you're using a Plex server on your LAN, internet speed is meaningless.

      • No Ethernet. It's wifi connected.

    • Is it having trouble buffering or just choppy playback?

      • Choppy playback.

        • I used to have the same problem with my VTV and 4K MKVs. Try accessing the Plex server through DLNA on Kodi or VLC. You can also try using Emby (Plex alternative).

          • @Cuchavira: yep… this

try plex in Kodi, works for me, whereas the native plex app has issues (on this and my Sony Android tv)

          • @Cuchavira: Thanks, I'll try that.

Courtesy of kirt here's a link to a bunch of apk's to sideload: https://mega.nz/#F!PaJQELqY!dg3wVzOFIybj6an5Yeq7PA

Also a bunch of kodi add-ons here: https://www.matthuisman.nz/

    • The Optus Sport addon from Matt Huisman used to work great on this box until a few weeks ago but now it it is very flaky. Weird thing is I am also using that same Kodi addon on a Xiaomi Mi Box and it still works perfectly on that. Apart from the Optus Sport issue the VTV is great.

  • going like hot cupcakes :) finally can spend my Ebay Plus $5 voucher…

    • +1

Oh wow. Wonder if that's all thanks to me?

Should ask seller for some commission :p

      • yeah, I accept donations :)

  • Is this as good as a Xiaomi Mi Box S? Or a Nvidia Shield? Looking for a media player for the bedroom.

    • I have the standard Mi Box and I prefer the VTV over that.

I don't have the Shield. I hear the Shield is the superior product, but has a significantly higher pricetag.

I'm not particularly fussy (don't care about stuff like HDR and all that stuff), so if you don't need the best of the best, I'd probably say this is better value of the Shield based on the price difference alone.

      • Does it play any video file you throw at it? Looking to play videos rom my NAS using Kodi.

        • These days I mostly just stream (Netflix/Stan), but for the odd time I use Plex, I have no issue loading videos.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I can answer.

        • I use Kodi to stream to this box, I am not fussy about resolutions, usually whatever I find in 720p and up is fine and will watch standard definition if I can't find anything better. I have the box wired to the router and stream from my old core duo 1.66 laptop over wireless 54g in the same room, so far doesn't skip a beat. Prior to using Ethernet on the VTV end I tried to stream FHD 3d content but it wasn't up to it, however I believe that was because the router having to negotiate both the up and down streams over Wi-Fi.

I should mention that actually I am just using kodi to stream from a share. I am not streaming DLNA but I tested that and it also works, but assuming it's a bit more bandwidth intensive.

  • With the vodafone tv thing. Does that mean you can watch tv without Coaxial Cable

    • +1

Still need a cable if you awnt to connect to your antenna.

Apologies if I'm mentioning anything you are already aware of, but what you are able to is download the various channels catch up apps and they (I think all) have live streaming for their various channels.

      • Oh i didnt know that. Thanks

    • +3

Or set up the built in live channel app using this guide https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…

best thing i've done with the android tv, you can flick through all the channel as if you are watching FTA via the antenna.

      • Oh right. Thanks

    • Many FTA channels have apps to stream their shows via internet connection

  • +1

Doh! Of course - bought a new one for $72 yesterday … great box though - bought it purely to watch Foxtel through via Kodi - works amazingly!!

  • +2

For the usual price of $72 I rate this box highly.

Is anyone able to cast Foxtel Go to it without a problem? It works, but every 30 seconds or so it stutters. That is the only app I have that doesn't cast properly to Vodafone TV. (casting Foxtel Go to a standalone Chromecast is flawless)

    • +4

The kodi add on here works great: https://www.matthuisman.nz/

I haven't experienced any stuttering but the menu is a bit difficult to navigate

      • +1

Thanks I will check it out.

  • OOS

  • +1

These are great if you have an old TV that cannot decode the HD MPEG-4 TV channels (or you see a picture but no audio). Very useful for free-to-air live TV.

    • +1

Even old TVs that only have DVI in (no HDMI) - you can get a cheap (<$5) USB audio box off ebay and the VTV will use it to output sound.

  • +3

Copied from reply to an old thread, may be useful for others

    Few of the features
    1. Vanilla android tv software comes with Netflix and Youtube preinstalled.
    2. In build Tv tuner - no need to switch between HDMI ports.
    3. Great remote with google voice button, will save you from annoying typing using the remote(will not work for all apps though).
    4. I am not using NetFlix, so remapped Netflix button on remote with amazon prime video(very handy if you want to reuse remote buttons.) FYI you can trigger multiple apps based on single or multiple presses of the button. I have used this app for remapping -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutt…
    5. Before purchase I was curious to know if I can use VPN apps on this, can confirm VPN app (in my case PIA) working flawlessly.

As noted by other members, few of the android apps will not work as only apps ticked for android tv are visible in-app search. But you can install non-market apps, there is no restriction.

    Hope this will help others.

      1. In build Tv tuner - no need to switch between HDMI ports.

How do you tune the channels with the Coaxial Cable, is it under settings?

      • +1

        Yes

  • I already have one, but was considering buying another one, in a week or two. However it got posted here and it was sold out in no time.

For those who missed it, most likely they will have more in stock in a few months. I bought mine from the same seller, four months ago.

I own 6 cheap Chinese boxes and the Vodafone one is much better than any of them.

  • And all gone!
    Grabbed two :)

  • +3

Good box, shame not android TV 8 upgrade tho

  • I run this in a couple of the kids room, I also run mi boxes.

The benefit of this is the remote, more kid friendly. Dont really use the TV function at all for kids rooms.

The only issue is the lack of patching, vodafone arent supporting this device anymore so no new android OS Security Patches etc. No upgrade to Android TV 8 or Android TV 9

No Google Home integration, ie with mibox i can say ok google turn on tv and it turns on the mi box, and ok google turn off tv and turns off the mi box. This is part of android TV 8 and higher

    • Damn. Sorry for the dud, guys.

  • they just emailed saying "internal error" and "accidentally listed this". Refunding etc etc.

    what a loud of tripe.

    • In other words according to unforseen demand they figured they could relist for a bit more and get more money.

  • Yup and order cancelled - glitch in the system. I'm asking them what does technical term "glitch" mean… not happy here, already had plans for this little box..
    Shall we ask for compensation?

    • You can just get one brand new from Vodafone for $72 delivered
