[Android] City Maps 2Go Pro or Premium Offline Maps Free (Was $19.99/$26.99) @ Google Play Store

12160
PROSUPPPREMSUPP

Came across this on HUKD, thought it might be appreciated here too :)

Supposdely a great app to save on expensive mobile charges if you're lost abroad for example. Premium version is better than Pro version.

Steps to get the free pro or premium version:
1) Download the standard version of the app from the Google Play Store
2) Open the app. From the menu, select "Redeem a code"
3) Enter the code PROSUPP (for pro version) or PREMSUPP (for premium version - you must manually enter these codes, do not copy and paste!
4) You should now have pro access to the app for free

About the app:
▶ IN-DEPTH CONTENT: Unlike other offline map apps, CityMaps2Go features photos as well as tips and comprehensive in-depth info for millions of places.
▶ WORLDWIDE COVERAGE: CityMaps2Go covers the whole world. More than 150 countries, 60000 destinations, and 50 million places!!
▶ WORKS OFFLINE: CityMaps2Go works online and offline. Saving you from data roaming charges in foreign cities or connectivity problems in national parks.
▶ PLAN TRIPS: Remember and save all the places you would like to visit. Create lists and have your travel ideas ready when you need them.
▶ DETAILED MAPS: Explore your saves on a detailed worldwide map. Navigate streets, footpaths, and bikeways wherever you are.

Hope this helps someone (stuck in the middle of nowhere)!

Whilst I support competition, does this do anything google maps can’t?

    • +3

I was going to say "be used offline", but really, you can download Maps for Google Maps in advance too, which I'd imagine you'd have to do on this anyway.. so good question.

      • +6

On further research it looks to use mapbox as the mapping solution. Occasionally this is more up to date than Google, and is pretty nice although I already use Gaia to download MapBox layers. The additional POI looks okay, as is the ability to create lists, but Google appears better in both cases. Perhaps it’s nice to have different things highlighted for complementary research, or just an alternative map for those with only Google Maps.

When I travelled to Japan in 2018, google maps wouldn't allow offline map saving there. It seems there are some region restrictions.

So I had to use a local SIM or pocket wifi to use google maps in Japan.

    • +5

The main thing is tourist stuff. Can download wiki articles and set spots to stop etc.

  • Doesn't work for me…

    • Update to my own post. It works for me now. I tried to enter the code via "payments". Silly me

  • +5

I use maps.me while travelling offline. Is this better? Hadn’t even heard of it before…

    • Same here. Maps.me has navigation, this does not. Personally found maps.me great when travelling overseas and needing navigation to places. Just download map before you go and you're all set.
I'm not sure what the additional benefit is on this app. Maybe they have more 'places' listed?

  • +2

I am having problem with the login to restore the Premium purchase, even after resetting the password.

    • Their website and email system is very slow, maybe because of us all hammering them at once.

  • Osmand or this?

  • What's the point of this App?
    No turn by turn navigation?

    • +1

I was wondering this - great app to see points of interest nearby but cannot seem to find a way to navigate from where you are to said place

  • Thanks!

  • Is this powered by open street maps

  • Beware maps are not correct. Displaying completely different name of the street in front of my home.

    • +5

      Are you lost?

      • Even Google maps has this problem sometimes.

        • … are you lost?

    • +1

They all get their info from somewhere, and there will be delays and/or errors at times.

I've corrected plenty of Google Maps stuff. I work in greenfield estates, before/during/after construction. It's would be a full time (unpaid) job, updating maps manually.

For VIC LASSI - Land And Survey Spatial Information is the free & accurate site. But no navigation features. I'm sure there are equiv in every state.

  • Thank you so much OP. I swear by this app and have used it extensively throughout Europe. Had Pro and now have Premium, whoo-hoo!

    • -1

      Good deal?

      • -1

people were paying for it before. Now its free. what more do you want?
Based on the reviews and comments here, this looks like a decent app.

Its for free. Try it and leave a comment

        • Agreed.
Person I replied to does not.

  • +3

Is this meant to be a freebie?
Could see the app owners shutting down a few hundred unlocks if it's some kind of mistake.

    • Does it matter? Try and see

  • Thanks OP

I noticed after installing that it only asked about sharing location info with ulam (optional slider) but once setup, in the settings there is an extra slider for information usage tracking that was already "ON" in my case.

Just something the OzBargain community might want to be aware of, I know I don't like sharing (my information) unless I have to. Haha

    • Thanks just turned it off in settings

    • Edit: That was meant to read Ulmon but I missed the autocorrect it changed it to.

  • Got it thanks .

  • -1

    is this an offline gps?

    • +1

      GPSs use free satellites.

Offline is reference to mobile towers.

      • -2

pretty sure tomtom go uses sattelites. It requires GPS on, even though it's offline.

        • -1

Wait, are you claiming your GPS device needs to use GPS to work?

          • -1

            @Salmando: Assanges cat says

            GPSs use free satellites.
Offline is reference to mobile towers.

Which is untrue because Tomtom is both offline AND using gps.

            • @lostn:

Which is untrue because TomTom is both offline AND using gps.

Offline just refers to not having to download maps in real time. When your phone is out of Wi-Fi range, it may attempt to download maps via cellular connection. TomTom devices usually have maps already preloaded.

Don't think you could (easily) turn off GPS on your phone, and it's ok to have it on as it'll still tell you where you are regardless if the maps had been downloaded.

So yes, the phone like your TomTom, can both be "offline" and use GPS.

  • Thanks OP!

  • Why has this been reported as a dupe. I can't find any previous deals

  • +4

Think their servers are getting hammered, had to try several times to sign up and verify.

    • +3

I tried a few times last night and again this morning, still getting "Signup Failed".

  • Tried creating an account but looks like the pro/premium version was gone after logout and I had to re-enter then again when logged in. The details are not synced to the server.

    • +1

When you login again it takes a few seconds to sync and then the redeem code option disappears. There is a spinning wheel when it is syncing before the redeem code option disappears

Edit: website is hammered. My end I can't even login or when I do the Redeem Code option isn't going away but it did previously. I can't even send email verification email as it fails each time

      • Doesn't work. Tried many times and I still have to manually entered the codes to make the upgrade bander disappear.

        • +13

Try redeeming the code here (note it took ages a moment ago to login)

          https://app.citymaps2go.com/signup?returnUrl=%2Fredeem

          Select Already registered? Log in

          • +1

@cute as duck: Can't even login. Maybe their server is hammered. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I'll try again later.

            • @r0xz: Yeah I can't get in either to be honest but in early morning you would log out and then in again took a few seconds to sync and the redeem code disappeared so hoping that's how it should ideally work like

          • @cute as duck: Thanks; after numerous tries, it did eventually work.

  • +6

I managed to download the Pro version but unable to sign-up. Can someone help?
I've tried everything.. I've hanged user name, password, sign using FB, and even tried 'forgot my password'. It kept saying sisignup has failed.

    • maybe this the reason why they free….

    • I got signup failed once. Then I was reading a few comments here for a few minutes and went back to the signup and tried it again (didn't change any details, just left them how they were after it failed first time) and it worked. Got a verification email sent. So maybe it is because so many people are tyring to do it all at the same time. Also, I had not redeemed a code for pro/premium version first. I did that after I was able to sign up (not sure if that makes a difference).

    • Lots of errors a little while ago. Eventually worked. Keep trying!

    • Have you tried opening the verification email and clicking on the link.

  • +2

can't see navigation option in premium version

    • +2

      wondering the same

    • Don't think it has it

  • do I need to type in the code on each of the device installed?

  • Map for my location is 2yrs out of date. It's free, can't complaint.

  • I made an account with my email address and then got an email with a link for verification. Verified via the link - all looks good but can't login to the app "Login failed". Tried resetting the password and got another link to do this but still login. Anyone else having this issue?

    • Me too

      • Same I think their server can't handle it.

        • I had this and re-tried a few times. When i exited the screen i was logged in. Maybe just a bug?

  • Codes not working any more.

    • Working back again

  • if I'm just driving around or walking around streets in Asia. never had issue with Google offline mode . can any one explain why this would be better ?

  • servers are being hammered at the moment.

Will this code survive a reinstallation?

    • Only if you sign up/log in

    • was thinking the same I am getting a new phone soon
will it stay on my play store account as Paid premium

  • I have got the email with a verification link, but opened the link with a browser I got a "502 Bad Gateway" message. Opened the link with the app itself I got the "email verification failed".

    • +3

same message with password reset, kept trying and eventually worked

  • tried couple of times and worked for acct creation.
    Their server seems slow

  • Not sure if I need this.

    Downloaded and registered anyway

    Reason: "bargain"

  • Success just now. A few steps needed to be repeated due to failing but I successfully got through them all. A great find.

  • Could anyone get a good response when clicking the verification email? I get bad gateway

Edit: tried again and again and eventually it worked

  • Signup keep throw back failed error

  • Way too many permissions, pass.

    • If you're paranoid, just limit the permissions after you install it.

  • Incorrect email address or password, even I just reset the password

    • I have the same problem login from the app. No problem logging in from the browser though.

      • I gave up, deleted the app, restarted the phone, downloaded the app again, still getting the save error.

Update - deleted the app again, restarted the phone, re-downloaded, this time throws error (3 options to select) I clicked the most right one "retry" (the most left option is continue), finally it worked.

      • how do you login from browser? I can't see a portal

        • +3

There is a link from a post from 'eyzonme' toward the bottom of page 1.

        • By the way, the problem might be that the server are bombarding with requests. I have eventually got the correct login to the app now. Maybe give it a few hours for it quiet down and try again.

          • @ozbpro10: thanks! yup managed to create an account online but redeem code is not going through. then also can't login via app yet.

edit: ok had to verify email address and got to enter code online. Hope the app starts working soon.

        • After successfully redeeming the code from the browser, if the app still said 'login failed', uninstall and reinstall the app, then login should work.

          • @ozbpro10: cool thanks it did the trick!

can't wait to use it on my travels. now just have to book my travels …

  • +2

The code is attached to the app and not linked to google play account. So if you delete the app, the in-apps are gone, though it works when reemding through creating account with Maps2go.

  • Premium version is better than Pro version.

    Why is this the case?

Can the OP, or someone else, find a link to where the differences between Premium and Pro are detailed?

    • -1

Go to the website and look

      • Go to the website and look

I have, and I can't find anything specific.

The information In the [Learn More] section of the website is very basic.
The [F.A.Q.] section briefly mentions the Pro and Premium versions, but I couldn't find any information about any specific differences.

You are clearly better at searching the website than me, so if you were able to find something why not share the link?

        • My quick googling concludes the following.

Pro features: no ads and unlimited offline maps.

Premium: pro features, plus customizable map colors, shapes, and points.

Unconfirmed is that the 'pro' version is being discontinued, and premium will be the new upgraded version.

Much easier way without having to even download the app:

    1. Go to https://app.citymaps2go.com/
    2. Sign up, you will be shown the redeem page
    3. Copy/Paste PREMSUPP into the field and hit redeem
    4. Premium tied to account, login on device whenever and premium will be there.
    • +2

Yes, this method worked for me, as originally suggested by eyzonme a few hours ago.

      • Didn't actually see that, I just googled it because the app wouldn't let me login (MiUI 😡)

    • Thanks, worked a treat for me too…

    • Thank you! This worked but I'm still unable to login on the app. Probably just a server issue now.

    • +1

Here is a more direct link: https://app.citymaps2go.com/redeem

Method works for iOS (iPhone / iPad) as well.
