  • Syd to Haneda direct for some of the dates listed are $572. Saves you the stopover in Brisbane and flying ANA.

    • Hi Heybargain,

I have added a link to the ANA deal and also current dates.

    How low can they go?

    • yep, this is almost a weekly thing now

Bit risky to be booking overseas holidays for the next couple of months

  • It seems most people wearing face mask in Japan now, not a relax atmosphere to visit. They seem to be overcurious about the virus.

    • +4

Visitors to Japan ask about mask wearing every year! Now this extra misunderstanding…

Expect to see many Japanese people wearing a mask between February and April

Masks are normal at this time of the year in Japan!
Japanese friends told me the main reason people wear masks is to filter out pollen.

Now is hay fever season in Japan, especially around Tokyo. Over 25M Japanese suffer from hay fever. And what do they do each year at this time - wear masks.

hay fever season starts between end of January and mid-February

I wore one in Japan because I didn't want to spread my germs to others (I had a cold)

        • +3

          I've done the same.
That's common courtesy in Japan. It's a good idea where people are in close contact.

I thought that was the main reason for mask wearing - meaning millions of sick people!

It's easy to misinterpret reasons for wearing a mask. Masks are associated with illness (and now this virus).

But at this time of year, millions are wearing masks due to the spread of pollen from the suji (tree).

Of course, like here - some will wear masks because of fear.

not a relax atmosphere to visit

Strange - my reason for not going back to Japan now - is because there are a record number of Foreign tourists.

That's not so relaxing (making bookings there, transport, visiting popular locations)😉

This year Japan expects 40M visitors. It's just too popular.

Really experiencing another country is not as good with too many visitors like us. We can tend to hang out with other visitors, rather than meeting locals. And locals may be tired of visitors like us.

Experienced Japan very differently in 2011 - just after the horrific earthquake & tsunami. People said not to visit then & foreigners fled.
It was the quietest year for visitors in a long time. Sad for Japan, but I'm glad I had that experience to just be with the Japanese people & culture.
(Fishing with locals I met - I was the only one to catch a fish - a fugu🐟)

There are still many quiet parts of Japan. The rural, many coastal & small island areas are peaceful refuges worth exploring.

      • The number of foreign tourists has dropped, due to the virus. It'll probably keep dropping until its controlled. Japan is a busy place in general with lots of visitors but it might actually be a good place to visit now while the travel warnings are still in place.

        • The estimated numbers will be down (probably many less from China), but there are still plenty of visitors. With the Olympics - it will be a difficult time for Japan to handle this.

And there are plenty of cheap flights to entice more. Virgin chose a difficult time to start flying to Japan, so it needs to fill seats.

It's always a risk travelling during a viral crisis. People need to weigh that up.

The threat isn't just from the virus.

Fear of the virus can be a greater threat to travellers.

I was in South Korea during the H1N1 (Swine flu) viral outbreak. Locals were blockading entrances to accommodation to Foreigners. Foreign teachers were checked for their health in front of the school assembly.
It got violent & humiliating. Locals would say we brought the virus to their country. Not a pleasant time to visit. Luckily my local friends were great help.

Japan is different to South Korea. Japanese are generally very polite. It is considered very disrespectful to treat Foreigners otherwise. (Unfortunately, like most places, there is some racism.) But fear & anger can easily boil over without warning into major troubles, anywhere.

On my many travels in Japan, I've only had 1 unpleasant experience - verbally attacked in Okinawa, mistakenly thought to be US military. She was very old, so I apologised in Japanese.

          • @INFIDEL: The incidents that happened to me & others in SK could have happened in many countries. Most likely there were problems elsewhere. It's not a criticism of South Koreans. I love the country.

In England around this time, I was asked to leave Weatherspoons (downmarket pub chain) after a prolonged cough from a tickle in the throat. Everyone gets concerned & protects themselves.

Minority groups become feightened, see their existing prejudices as justified, & lash out against foreigners. It's a vocal view, usually by the few.

We are closing our borders to some foreigners & sending returning overseas Australians into distant quarantine - despite the WHO recommendation against that. There are reports of racist abuse directed against Chinese here.

It can sometimes be risky being a traveller.

The angry (possibly 100 year old) woman on that small Okinawan island was justified in her anger against members of the US Military. As I left the island, I saw military on leave arriving drunk, swearing & verbally abusing the locals. I was ashamed how badly they treated those wonderful people. But as a seasoned traveller, her anger frightened & worried me.

        • In 2018, almost 75% of the 31M visitors were from East Asia with over 8M from China.
The current health crisis will affect those numbers.

  • No love for the west-coast of Australia?

    • Virgin fly direct from Brisbane to Japan. From Perth - that would be a long flight!

  • Considering the flights are direct from Brisbane, charging more from Brisbane seems unreasonable.

Was the same in Qantas direct flight from Brisbane Deal.

    • Yeah I know, I can't work this out? Departing airport fees perhaps? Regardless it's the same flight in effect (missing a leg)… Why is it dearer? Explain Virgin!?
