It's a bit of a broken record thing to say but I honestly wouldn't pay $524 for 36 months of being with a Pixel4. My pixel3 battery experience was that bad, I took a $250 hit to sell mine off and get a phone without a terrible battery.

The pixel4 has a worse battery endurance rating than the pixel3 on gsmarena.

    https://www.gsmarena.com/google_pixel_4-9896.php
    https://www.gsmarena.com/google_pixel_3-9256.php

I can't be bothered answering "how did you use your phone" queries again on one of these so to be clear, I'm a light user, but I don't like the requirement of having to put the phone on charge every single night.

Your results may vary - just make sure you understand how awful that 62h rating is before you buy into having a pixel. I feared using that phone. Switched to a samsung A70 and charge every 2-4 days

    • +6

My pixel 3 battery is atrocious as well.

      • Whats 3a like???

      • my 3a battery is fantastic - full day heavy use

    • +2

A70 has a 4500mah battery, of course it's going to last longer than a phone with a much smaller battery.

Worst time to charge your phone is at night because, for longevity, you ideally want to keep the phone in the optimal battery charge range, something like 20-80% always

      • -1

Nobody cares about it having a higher mAh… they're just stating that the phone itself has terrible battery life. I'm sure a company as big as theirs could work some software magic to work with a smaller battery size but they haven't - hence the phone being terrible. Do yourselves a favour and buy a Xiaomi or Oppo and you'll never look back.

      • +1

My A20 with a 4000mah battery charges up to 60~70% within a hour or so and it has only a 15w fast charger. I wouldn't consider that a nightmare. I think A71 has a 25w charger with a 4500hmah battery.

By the way I agree with you about optimal battery charge range. A 70% battery of My A20 lasts at least two days. However that is my personal experience.

      • +4

Yes, the A70 does have a bigger battery. That's part of why I got it.

The pixel is a flagship phone with some of the worst battery endurance of all phones currently available. Seems odd to me.

        • I'm glad you're happy with your new phone, seems odd the pixel would have that bad battery life.

There are ways to optimise battery life with an OLED screen and stock android. You would think those two things are the most important, i.e. screen and software.

I have a pixel 3a so I can't compare directly, but my battery life is reasonable.

        • Although bigger battery is important to battery life, the major area that the A70 and A20s differ is the CPU and screens( I believe) this is typically where the battery usage ramps up on the higher end phones and if they want to keep the phone sleek or whatever the reason is they tend to drop in smaller batteries which the really works against then phone…

In saying that the frikin pixel 4 battery size was piss poor from when announced..lol less than 3000mah was always going to see it not be up to snuff battery wise… Especially paired with a 855 and OLED display… Can't imagine how bad they'll be 24 months down the track…

    • +6

I'm still using my Pixel 2XL and I've never had a battery issue, easily lasts all day and if I have to push it I can last 2 with pretty reasonable use.

      • +1

I'm currently using an OG pixel 2 and I can probably get a day and a half out of it. But not if I play heaps of games and have the brightness at 75% or above all day. When I first had it, could last that amount of time doing both those things, the battery is dying a slow death but I do hammer my phone every day with use.

        • +2

Well the thing is, the Pixel 4 is worse battery life than the Pixel 2, while the Pixel 4 XL is similar to Pixel 2. Pixel 2 XL on the other hand, last at around 2 hours more compared to Pixel 2 screen on. I think out of all the flagship Pixel (not counting 3a) the Pixel 2 XL has the best battery life, second is 3XL and the original XL and then Pixel 2. The rest are below that.

          • @Bigboomboom: Does the 3a have the best battery life? Maybe that should be my next phone! Probably and upgrade from the standard Pixel 2.

            • @serpserpserp: 3a and 3a XL does, the 3a XL last something like 4-5 hours screen on longer than Pixel 2 whereas 3a is like 3h. They are however using a slower SoC and it shows when it comes to processing HDR+ Enhanced or Night photos.

Gsmarena test shows the 3a XL last 5 hours more in video playback (no Wifi/LTE) compared to Pixel 2, 3h more in web browsing on Wifi and 2-3h in terms of calling.

      • +3

Still rocking my Pixel 2XL from early 2018 Telstra deal. The thing is still a machine. Probably won't get a replacement unless Pixel 5XL blows it out of the water, which I kinda doubt…

        • +1

I used the family and friends promotion, my plan is soon to run out and I'm not sure I'm ready to say goodbye either!

    • +7

I don't like the requirement of having to put the phone on charge every single night

Criticisms of the Pixel 4 aside (and there are many), I've never used a phone where I did not have to charge every night, so this complaint seems silly at best. On some phones, I might end the day at 40%, on some others, maybe at 15%. It doesn't matter because I have to charge it up that night anyway.

      • That's what I thought when I wasn't with my A20. My old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 had an impressive battery life, but A20 was just another league.

I did not even need to charge my A20 for 3 straight days in a row when first I got my a20. The thing just refused to die. If it was for a broken GPS, this could have been my best android phone, ever regardless the specs.

      • -3

If you've never used a phone that doesn't need charging every night then you're not exactly in a position to judge whether it is silly complaint.

However, if you are instead implying that they don't exist or are rare, I'm afraid you've lived with a very unfortunate run of phones.

Each to their own, of course - but you can't tell me that it's silly to want a phone that lasts longer. Along with not charging every night comes generally lasting longer.

        • +2

If you don't charge during the day (and most people don't), then charging becomes a discrete function - i.e. you will charge every 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours…etc.

Suppose in the worst case, you end the day with 1% on your Pixel, in order for you to last another full day with an alternative phone, you need to at least have 51% battery there (to last you to the next night). There just doesn't exist a mainstream/flagship phone with twice the battery.

You may have some niche use case where you need a phone to last 1.5 days, you find the phone that works for you. This just isn't a regular use case for most people though.

          • +1

@p1 ama: If I consider the pixel to require charging every day and I am indeed discrete charging, what I am saying is that I don't believe it will last 2 days (or technically the time until I next put it on charge, which is not 2 days, it's 8am -> midnight the next night.

I would consider a phone battery to be okay if I don't necessarily have to charge it every night, which is actually more 3 days. There are plenty of phones that can last 33-50% longer than the pixel. My A70 which I'm not sure is mainstream in your eyes, can last around 4 days before I charge it. I'm a light user. My pixel, though, that thing would smash through battery every day to the point where I often was concerned it might turn off during the night (it being my alarm, obviously an issue).

I'm not here to claim I'm mainstream. I'm only here to say - if you make the mistake of forgetting to charge your pixel overnight, you will lose it during the next day. If you're okay with that, by all means - me personally, I thought it was horrid. Not to mention the fact if actually used the thing for a little while, it would smash through battery.

      • Lol try mi max series. I'm super heavy user, I work, play and chill on my phone. 14 hours sot across 2 days, with gaming.

On a serious note, a 4000mah+ battery and decent 11mn cpu should get you some great hours. That's like, 12 hours sot territory.

    • +2

A70 looks good but I wish there was a smaller version. I don't want a phone bigger than 5.5inch but seems to be getting harder and harder to find. I'm still using my galaxy s5 lol. Screen is still great though and basically the same as this a70 (amoled fhd).

I'm a fairly light user too and do 98% of my computing on my desktop pc so I would never buy a phone over $400. The only thing I want to upgrade for is basically a better camera and updated processor as I've noticed it being a little slow here and there just browsing the internet.. Considering my use though, I am in no rush to upgrade and the s5 serves me fine for the most part. Anyone got a suggestion for me anyway? I don't really want to give up amoled or expandable storage but understand most phones are closed back so i'll give up the removable battery. I'd also love a phone that's durable. I don't use a case and i have dropped my s5 at least 20+ times and it doesn't have a scratch on the screen. The plastic sides of it are great and it just gets dented which takes most of the force and never reaches the screen. I love it for that and hate making a slim phone bulky with a case. If they sold an s5 with just an upgraded camera and processor/ram, on latest android I'd be all over it.

      • I was the same as you, didn't want a phone bigger than the S5, but once you go to 6 inch you will never go back to anything smaller.

      • The TCL PLEX $250 from recent JB HiFi deal would have been a major upgrade from the S5 for you

    • I took a $250 hit to sell mine off and get a phone without a terrible battery.

What phone did you replace your Pixel 3 with?

      • Samsung A70

Not as good camera - but does a decent job and lasts a long time, battery wise.

    • Mine too. Sold that piece of shit phone after 8 months at a $140 loss. I'll admit the camera was nice but everything else, EVERYTHING else sucked. Put me off buying pixels at least for the near future.

  • +11

Keep your cart open and it offers a $20 off pop up

  • +1

You definitely can cancel and escape the plan. You are up for $40 + cost of handset.

From the Critical Information Summary (of the cheapest $40 plan):

    1 month
    Total min cost is
    $40 + Handset
    Cost

    • -3

I posted above - be careful.

The discount is based on you following through on the 12/24/36 deals to keep the discount.

Pretty sure early cancellation means you will pay the FULL RRP of the handset not the discounted rate.

The deal is about getting people to lock into vodafone for a multi-year plans - not sell handsets at a loss.

      • +1

You're such a douchebag , get your fact right

      • Hey man I know what you mean but this time you are wrong

I actually called up and they said the remaining repayments of the phone if you exit early not the FULL RRP.

So if you get the Pixel 4 XL 128gb over 12m months with the intention to sell ASAP it will be $714 minus how many handset repayments has been made + 1 month of plan fee.

The one you are talking about that I had before or similar to was an Optus one, they discount the phone repayment to almost $0 provided you remaining locked to one of their plans for 12 or 24 months and if you exit early you pay the remaining plan fee to contract end to buy out the phone

  • +2

Got the pixel 4xl 128gb, will cancel the plan when I activate it. Thanks OP

  • Phone's probably locked to Vodafone (is that still a thing?), but otherwise this is a fantastic deal! I'm more than happy with my Pixel 3 otherwise I would jump on this to get stock Android.

    • +2

Nah it's not a thing anymore.

    • Errr.. Pixel 3 is also stock Android. I mean it's just a number difference and you're using the phone right now 😂

      • Oh yeah I just meant if I wasn't already on a Pixel phone I'd snap this up!

  • Although now expire, i am sure it will come back… for those who need a usable plan with data, the note 10 deal from JB seems much better consider the extra function you get on the note 10.

I personally find the missing ultra wide lens from Pixel 4 is a no go for me.

    • The only expired JB deals I can find are twice the price of this?

    • Same here, main selling point for me for the Pixel 3 is the wide selfie cam. Apparently the Pixel 4 selfie cam is not as good as the pixel 3. Lots of complaints on Reddit.

  • From the CIS

You must purchase a handset from Vodafone to use with this Plan and pay it off over 12, 24 or 36 interest-free monthly instalments. If you
cancel this plan, your MPP will also automatically cancel and 100% of remaining MPP instalments will be applied to your next bill

    • What's MPP? Monthly phone payment?

      • +2

        Mobile Payment Plan.
ie you've got to pay the phone outright, and not monthly if you cancel.

  • I have a pixel 4, terrible phone would not recommend. Google find a way to make the dumbest hardware, eg ridiculous notch, tiny battery.

    • +9

I've been using it everyday since the JB hi-fi deals. Definitely wouldn't say its a terrible phone.

    • +2

I'm calling BS on this. The battery life is average at best but I highly doubt anyone who actually has this phone would call it terrible.

      • It's got the worst battery life out of pretty much any phone tested in the last few years by GSM arena in their like for like tests.

      • Can confirm. Its a great phone.
Battery is fine for me. Lasts a whole day. Lasts longer than my previous Galaxy S8. But Google should have put a bigger battery in, then there is no complaints about battery size. They nail some things better than anybody but then drop the ball on really basic stuff.
But I'm loving the screen, pixel launcher, face unlock and the camera, very happy so far.

    • Pure android experience my a%%. Nobody cares except a few geeks. It is one of the stupidest excuses to rip off customers with underwhelming hardwares and poor performance.

      • +2

Pure Android is freaking awesome. No stupid bloody bloatware or bixby (for eg) which my dad hates with a passion. Every family member and mate who I've introduced to pure Android phones (nokia and pixel) never want to go back to a phone overloaded with crapware you can't remove.

I'm bloody thrilled with my pix3 after coming from a sammy s9. The camera is awesome, Nightsight and astrophotography is wizardry, and the thing charges in no time.

        • +2

Of course with a phone of battery life that lasts less than a 18yr old virgin boy, why would you need more performance and features that are eventually introduced to "pure" android?

        • Imho stock OS isn't anything to write home about

Now you know someone with an alternative opinion. Me. :p

        • Pixels don't run "Pure Android" though.

  • -3

It's a good deal if you sign up for 36 months and immediately cancel / payout the phone

    • +2

Why 36 months? It's the same total cost for 12/24/36

    • +2

Don't know why signing up to 12, 24 or 36 months matters?
Regardless, you pay $40 in plan fees and $524 for the phone. You don't get an option to repay just $14.55 per month.

    • +1

Same deal if you sign up for 12 months? What's specific about 36 months?

  • Shopback and CR too… although i'm not really understanding the cashback… it says 75%??

    • +1

IIRC 75% of the 1st months plan cost…i.e.on $100/mth plan you'll get $75 back, bit no doubt you'll have to wait a few months.

  • -1

No expandable storage? That's a deal breaker for some

    • +3

lol I don't think any google phone since the nexus 4 (maybe?) has had expandable storage.

      BTW neither do Apple phone.

So not a deal breaker for 90% of phone owners.

      • +1

Apple and G Pixel don't have anything remotely near 90% of the phone market. Pretty sure it wouldn't even be half that.

  • +2

Shopback looks like 100% cashback based on first month plan cost if you signup for a 24 or 36 month contract. So makes the first month free, cancel after the month, and only pay for the phone yeah?

    • It's a month to month phone plan, so not included. The Phone Plan might be different.
Edit: can't see anything about phone plan deals on shopback.
Month to Month SIM Only Plan 40.00%

  • Hmmm pixel 4 or xl????

    • +1

Xl ofc. 4 has very small battery. My friend got 4 and has to keep charging brand new phone couple of times in a day.

      • True was checking out GSM arena and YouTube. Peeps are right about this being a bust… I think I'll keep my OnePlus 7t for my second phone.

      • Depends on what you are doing of course. I have a Pixel 4 and it easily gets me through a day.

  • With Vodafone service, that's a loss

  • -1

Dont need it but bought one;;Ozbargain..Will put it on ebay..

    • Gonna be flooded and make pixel 4 even worse in value.

    • shit phone to resell, especially if this deal gets flooded by re-sellers, XL probably the better bet to flip, standard p4 64gb re-sells for about $700 gumtree/eBay/FB guess you make $136 if you have the patience

  • Is this phone locked to Vodafone?

    • +1

Found this on their website for phones on a plan
Depending on when you purchased your device, it may be locked to the Vodafone network. There's no fee for unlocking a device purchased with a plan.

If you purchased your device before 1 August 2013, it may be network locked.

If you purchased your device after 1 August 2013, it won't be network locked.

  • If I didn't get the free s10e from the JB deal,I would definitely have got the 4xl from here

    • What was that deal?

      • S10e for 199 with free galaxy buds. You could cancel plan after a month. So effectively the phone was free

        • damn it.

    • Got link or proof… I wanna see

  • -5

Dear OZbargainers, we'll likely to see more of these deals to come through on all 4G handsets, only because they will be obsolete very soon :-)

    • +1

Nah, the 3g network is still running for another few years, 4g coverage is ok, 5g aimt gunna be widespread anytime soon, it costs waaaaaay too much.

    • +1

      rubbish.
4g will be around for many years and 5g will take years to roll out.

  • +5

Pixel flagship keeps getting worse after Pixel 2, in fact Pixel 4 even considered as bust of the year by MKBHD. I don't think you'd be able to re-sell this phone for more.

  • Should i swap my Note 9 in for the XL?

    • +4

Heck no. Pixel 4 is garbage.

      • +2

he was asking about the XL, far superior to the pixel 4

  • failed their credit check :|

    • Still waiting to hear back from them. How did you find out you failed?

      • Same, got an email straight away saying my application got declined.

        • +10

          User name checks out.

        • Yes, same - got an email immediately.

          • @ripprind: I got an email saying my application is underway (credit check)

  • Just processed an order. Its $53 per month for the Pixel XL 64Gig and $50 for their plan. (12 months) I hope they dont gauge the prices up when people cancel the contract. Fingers Crossed

    • +1

U shouldn't have to worry with yours. It should already be a binding agreement for your price once you purchase it.

    • +1

      There's a $40 plan option too btw.

  • +11

I have checked with them. You can buy the phone outright for the same amount from a store. Pixel 4 XL 128Gb for $714.
