Giving the latest MacBook Air a run for its money.

    • Latest MacBook Air (2020 model) has a 10th generation i3 processor, this has 8th generation i5. Would this be considered more powerful?

      • +55

        MBA: 10th generation i3 processor
        SL: 8th generation i5

        10 + 3 = 13, but 8 + 5 = 13 also, so they'll be about the same power.

      • +7

        apples to oranges (or windows)
Both are for the same purpose - portable, premium, lightweight, adequate for browsing, good for typing, word processing, video, occasional photoshop
Surface has touch/draw display which is superb - I fill out all my applications and forms right on the screen, never have to print a single page any more these days
So I'd say pick one you like most - either of them would not be considered "powerful"

        • +2

Yep probably more a windows vs osx decision

      • +1

Based on the base/Boost clock, I think the i3 in the new MacBook Air is the 2c/4t 1000G1, which is like the entry of entry Intel laptop chips. A stepup to the 4c/8t i5 is almost a given.
If not, stay with this Surface Laptop and you are probably not missing much since the chips probably aren't that far off each other performance-wise. Plus you save $500+

      • +5

There was no 9th Gen laptop series so it's really a 1 generation gap. The i5 is hyperthreaded with 4 cores which is much better than the i3.

      • This link would be a better comparison.
        https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?pro…

        i3-1005G1
+ 10nm architecture (better power consumption?)
        + Same 3.4GHz Turbo Frequency as i5-8250U
+ Can TDP up to 25W (if configured by OEM)
        + Support for DDR4-3200/LPDDR4-3733
+ 4K output port up to 120Hz (if configured by OEM)
        + Support AVX-512
        - Base frequency only 1.2GHz vs 1.6GHz of the i5-8250U
        - 2MB less cache than i5-8250U
        - 2 less cores, 4 less threads than i5-8250U

        i5-8250U
        + 4 cores, 8 threads CPU
        + 6MB cache
+ Can TDP up to 25W (if configured by OEM)
        + iGPU max frequency 1.1GHz (200MHz more than i3-1005G1)
+ Can TDP down to 10W (if configured by OEM). i3-1005G1 can only go down to 13W.
        - Old 14nm+++++ architecture
        - Memory only up to DDR4-2400/LPDDR3-2133
        - 4K output port limited to 60Hz

For raw power, I would just go with i5-8250U. Don't mind the higher power consumption.

      • It’s $1400 on the apple education store. Not heaps more expensive

        • -3

Not that it matters since I've been downvoted into oblivion, but I was referring to the $2k quad core i5 MBA.

      • Tell me how the entry model is much better specced at $500+ more (RRP).

        • -2

I should have specified the quad core i5, which is the one that costs twice as much.

          • @coxymla: bro idk why u getting raped with downvotes its like people cant even talk these days without getting negged to oblivion, you hurt some fanboys feelings

  • +7

I love my Surface Laptop 2… would use it to replace my PC if I could, but I needs that Nvidia GTX power!

  • Any 4g/LTE options for surface?

    • +4

not for the laptop… I believe Surface X has LTE but I usually just tether to phone - plenty of data

      • +1

Very little reason not to tether these days. Doubt it's often you won't have your phone within WiFi range of this device when using it.

Can get decent data on phone plans these days too

  • Does this have the alcantara? I'd prefer metal if possible.

    • +3

      SL2 has alcantara, yes.

    • black is metal blue is alcantara

    • Yuck, they are still using Alcantara? I hated every moment with it

      • +2

Still using my with alcantara 2 years later, almost daily and loving the feel of it
mind you i'm a clean freak but it still looks great

      • You can have it with or without it with the 3rd gen.

  • Can you add SD card for more space?

    • +10

Only if you're really good with a Dremel

    • not on the laptop

  • -4

For those considering and okay with manufacturer refurbished I recommend buying from here as it will be $759 after discount code, unsure how many in stock but I did purchase same and very happy - https://renewd.com.au/collections/microsoft

    • where does it say manufacturer refurbished?

    • +3

      that's for the Surface 1 (7th gen i5) not Surface 2 (8th Gen)

    • +1

They don't have any Surface Laptop 2 devices and the equivalent Surface Laptop 1st gen with closest specs to this is more expensive than this deal. No sale.

  • +11

Just be aware that nothing is replaceable or user upgradeable on these machines. RAM, SSD all soldered to motherboard, and you can't even get to the battery to replace it without basically destroying the machine. They do look nice though.

    • Disappointing if that's true in regards to the battery. Considering how long a decent laptop lasts the average person these days that's the most likely component that will need changing.

  • +4

    13.5" Laptop Screen Size

Very crucial to indicate the screen size in the title as well.

    • +3

And if its a surface i believe it should have a 3:2 aspect ratio (normal widescreen is 16:9)

    • SL2 only comes in one size fits all…

  • Would this be decent to for a yr7 to use? We need to buy a new one ASAP as one of his peers dropped his laptop.

    • +2

Probably more than decent. He wont be able to game much on this that's for sure

    • -7

What a spoiled yr7 that is

      • +1

Yup. It will be good for year 7. Go for it. Many kids in my son’s school using SL1 or SL2.

    • +1

Yup. It will be good for year 7. Go for it. Many kids in my son’s school using SL1 or SL2.

  • I don't think that price if $1086 is correct.
I'd like to be proved wrong because I'd get one.
When I added it to the cart it said discount already applied
Nowhere to add the PMST20 coupon

    • I just bought and got the price of 1086.

    • I'm running into the same issue, I'm getting the message that the code can't be applied to my order.

      • +1

As far as I can tell, you need eBay Plus… maybe that's the issue?

    • Changed browsers with different security settings and it did work.

  • +3

These are excellent devices. I have had mine for a few months and travel a fair bit. The typing comfort is great compared to others in my opinion. I actually have a few laptops at the moment (MBP,x360) and this is my go to. I bought 2 for my teenager kids and they love theirs too

  • +3

Great laptop, love mine. Comfortably the best one I've ever used.

  • -6

    Even PS5 has 16g ram…

  • +1

Wife has the surface laptop 3. This is a steal for the SL2

  • -2

    Wait for Ryzen 4000 deals

  • +2

Anyone else looked at the 'picture' on the display in the display picture and wonder what is happening…..

    • I wonder what F stands for in your username…..

  • Any deals around for surface laptop 3 15" 16gb ram? I'm looking to buy one for the Mrs tomorrow

  • Just a reminder for those who have, and have saved, this AMEX rebate offer - "Spend $500 or more, get $100 back Microsoft" expiring 10 April.

    • +1

Would that work on eBay though?

      • Good point… Thanks

  • Is this better than a Dell XPS 13 (9365) 2-in-1 Intel core i5-7Y54? Think it is the 2017 model.

I really like the surface laptop aspect ratio and you can open it one handed. Very tempted at this price.

    • +3

This will be way better; 4C8T 15W CPU in this compared to 2C4T 7W CPU in XPS13.
Better screen on the Surface, but limited array of ports.

      • Thanks.

      • xps13 doesn't have touch screen, this you can do proper art or graphics

        • The Dell XPS 13 (9365) has touchscreen, it is the 2-in-1 model.

        • I have a Dell XPS13. It has a touch screen.

    • +1

The Y processors are disgusting. No idea why Dell put them in the 9365. Lags opening windows so badly

  • +1

Wow! if only surface pro 7 with the same spec is at this price..

    • -1

You're dreaming. This is last generation laptop hence why it's so cheap

  • No TRS 😔

  • -1

Guys my surface laptop 1's battery has swollen and the warranty runs out in july.

please by all the stock of surface laptop 2's you can, so that when i put it in for service they will not have any surface 2's in stock and i get a surface laptop 3.

    thank you <3

  • Thanks OP snapped one up.

  • +1

This is the old model, in case anyone doesn't realise.

  • Thanks OP, got one!

  • How is the return policy?

    • +1

Microsoft is really good with returns, completely free and the item can be used first.

  • How will this hold up with Illustrator and InDesign?

  • +1

If you want to buy it, buy it now. It will be more expensive as the Australia dollar is close to 50c.

  • expired

  • Did anyone save a screenshot of this before they ran out of stock?

    • Use archive.org

    • What's a screenshot gonna do for you ?

I'm assuming you think a store is gonna price match without checking ?
If you can get that to work then I'd be keen to do it too but i'd be surprised if you can.

I do have a screenshot and even if I didn't, I have photoshop so,, what next ?

      • Yes I was going to see if another store would price match but I know my chances of them not checking are slim.

        • If you want to have a crack with this screenshot, send me a message.

        • Any luck?

  • Noo i think i just missed out :(

  • They refunded me without any reason - wth?

  • Any good deals on the dock for these?

  • Mine came today, opened box and plugged in. Dead on arrival. Will not turn on.

  • Mine arrived Sunday.
Lovely to look at, but the WiFi is a bit problematic, with very poor/buggy network performance.
I am wondering if I got a bad one also, and I just bought a dock and cables.

  • So got it to finally boot, updated windows and back to dead,

Requested exchange though they will not accept exchange, only refund.

There goes my plan for a cheap Surface. Guess I got unlucky.

    • Should be able to exchange through MS directly. Just register warranty online and call them
