Staying in isolation brought out the hobbyist in me.

Wanted to setup LibreElec in 4K so was searching for the RPi 4B 4GB model. Current cheapest, shipped within Australia.
Bought an acrylic case with fan to go with this from eBay

Slightly cheaper here but they will be shipped from elsewhere so shipping might be delayed.

Keen to get in to this, but how much other stuff do you need to make it viable? E.g. case, power connection, memory card? Etc.

    • +1

Yeah those are the essentials. Anything else will depend on the project.

      • Some case kits incl 2x fans…?

There are at least 2 more AU-based suppliers,
who tend to have specials on accessories, etc.

        Cheap eBay kit:

        • "Acrylic Case Enclosure Box With Cooling Fan
Heat Sink For Raspberry Pi 4 Model B"

        ($7.44 shipped):
        (Pulsar.eBay.com? eBay's URL to item was H-U-G-E)

Maybe sort + search by price?

        [Accumulate… don't buy it all-at-once]

Agree with dexters comment, the other stuff completely depends on your project.

If you just need a basic 'other stuff' kit you may be able to buy something like this for $20+delivery. note I haven't bought this before so I cant comment on its quality. I'd recommend doing your own searching, but at least this gives you somewhat of a cost base.

If I were you I would buy the SD card separately and not via a kit though as you may be able to get a deal. This is a decent guide as to what sd card you would need

…from the "Go To Deal" button?

  • The link doesn't work. It takes me to element14 website, which shows popup to select whether i'm buying for private or business and it takes me to different website.

    • +4

Just select business. You do not need to enter in a business name or ABN.

      • Thanks, I was selecting private

  • Any suggestions for some GPIO kits for these? Looking to figure out how to work with switches/potentiometers to control programs…

    • +1

Haven't looked at actual kits yet, but DietPi has some awesome optimised software like Node-RED and RPi.GPIO.

This is pretty much the standard price E14 has had for yonks. With the drop in price of the 2gb, I would be holding out on the 4gb until a price drop. Sad to see the Core pi zero prices skyrocket recently. :(

    • Yep, reported.

  • +4

I didn't think 4gig made any difference to running LibreElec?

    2gig is just as good

    • +2

Yeah was thinking about it specially at $53 vs $88. But then thought will future proof it a bit in case I use it for some other projects.

      • I did think that, but then again there will be Raspberry Pi 5 next year.
        Is it worth future proofing?

        • Possibly if Pi 5 brings new developments with it that require higher base or max ram then you can possibly run the same on the 4 without having to get a 5…otherwise I tend to look at them project by project and if the device works as planned for its application then typically you don't need to upgrade it as quickly as a year…

Like my zero and 3b are more than adequate for snes emulation 🙂

is this with the USB c fix?

    • Couldn't find the lot date on their website. Hoping it is.

      • +2

It looks like something they've deliberately kept quiet about to ensure they sell all the old stock.

We asked Upton this week if the fix was out and he confirmed the update had indeed been rolled into a PCB Design for Manufacturing (DFM) process. He added that he would have expected the update "to have reached end users by now".

    • Or with audio over HDMI fix! Heat issues fix. Glad I have a RP3 that keeps going!

Make sure to get heat-sinks with this one, no matter what 'experts' say! Also a good cooling fan goes long way!

If you want to use an Apple USB-C / USB-C cable ($29) or a Samsung USB-C / USB-C cable, then you want the version of USB-C fix.

If you oped for a Coles, Woolies, Daiso, Target, K-mart USB-C/USB-C cable, then you don't need to worry about it. If you opted for USB-A / USB-C cable (and you don't intend to go all the way to 3A), you don't need to worry about it either.

I asked this question and my question got un-published. Something fishy.

  • i had a massive delay with rs online to the point i just cancelled the order, element 14 are generally pretty good though

  • LibreELEC or CoreELEC, which one is better for watching videos under the same hardware specifications?

    • Linux kernel version for 4B is lagging behind other LibreELEC targets.

    • CoreELEC is more targeted at Amlogic hardware, no? So better fit with an Odroid than Pi.

      • You are right. I searched the internet. CoreELEC is for Amlogic, and LibreELEC is for x86 and other chips.

  • Its their standard price not really a bargain.

  • I emailed them if that is revision 1.2 on Friday but no response yet. I have confirmed with 2 sellers who have 1.2 but not the discounted price as above.

  • Highly recommend getting a case with a fan, the cpu is severely thermally limited. Also note that you have to find a 64bit OS to take advantage of extra RAM, recommend using ubuntu server beta. Run some text mining and web scrappers on it 24/7.

  • Pretty new to Raspberry Pi and interested in fiddling with one as a full-fledged Amiga emulator; any advice for a general set-up without going into overkill on accessories or extras? Is the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB a good starting point?

  • Could this run Plex?

    • Yes! I have Plex Media Server running perfectly on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) with a lightweight DietPi install.

With the Enhanced Video Player option enabled in the client apps it doesn't need to do any transcoding and just direct plays video.

  • Nice, I got one yesterday from Element14, should have realised it was a bargain :)

  • AUD free fall against USD. Better to get in quick

  • Will this board fit into a Pi 3 enclosure?

[edit] I just had a look and it doesn't seem likely without some modification. Sorry for the lazy question.

OP, RS is actually higher than element14. I guess you looked at their price excluding GST.
    $83.22 (exc. GST) / $91.54 (inc. GST)

  • Got two! Need to keep myself busy :)

  • good stuff

  • Just got mine delivered few mins back.

Using this video as reference, looks like I have got v1.2

  • I received power supply, but they haven't shipped the pi yet.

    • Still no sign of pi, still in backorder

  • Received the pi but still waiting for cables..

    • Same here, I received my Pi this morning but the power supply and HDMI cable are saying that they're on back order… hopefully it won't take too long to ship.

      • I received the power supply on 24, the pi is still on back order

  • Price went up today, they're now $94.23 with GST :(

2GB has also gone up to ~$60.

  • Ordered 2gb one on 21st march and and delivered on 15th april. Checked the version , it was 1.1 with usb c power problem. Luckily i have also ordered the official power supply. It has been running pihole very well since thursday.
