  • Good start to downloading the internet with the unlimited quotas going around

I thought I'd do that when I went unlimited but I just grab what I want still lol.

    real capacity is 12.7329 TB…

      real capacity is 12.7329 TB…

      Welcome to every drive, ever.

    • +2

      12.7329 TiB

    • +3

I mean, if you want to get REALLY technical, the real capacity IS 14TB, it is the OS that reports it wrong.

OS reports 12.7329 tebibyte (TiB), but labels it incorrectly as a terabyte (TB).

Regardless; they're both the same raw size of storage. You're not getting short changed.

    • +1

All hard driver company use *1000 for calculating storeage. Same as other unit like 1ton=1000kg. So 14TB=14E12bytes

In computer, we using binary unit, so the upper unit = 2^10 (1024) of current unit. So 1TiB=2^40bytes.

So the real capacity for this driver is: 14E12/(2^40) TiB = 12.7329258248 TiB. This is the number they claim :).

  • Whilst many current 2x3TB DS215j is chugging along nicely, as the 12+ TB drives start to drop more in price it’s becoming very tempting to upgrade to hold all our photos/videos and media.

to hold all someone else's photos/videos and media

      FTFY

      • I don’t get it?

i think he is referring to Linux ISOs

      • holding them for a friend

Works out $47/TB which is much more expensive than $36/TB for allegedly Barracuda Pro drive in 10TB Expansion.

    • +1

Twice as much as the Amazon $231 10Tb drive back in Jan. For those lucky enough to snag it.

      • Yep my 3 arrived from Amazon just before we drove accros the country for a now cancelled holiday. Win some, loss some

  • 20TB out this year, hopefully prices for 10-16tb come down.

    • Geez crazy. How would you be going losing 20TB of data in one hit.

      • These are NAS drives, so you'd presume that people would have at least 2 with one of them as a parity (backup) drive

        • That's assuimg that a lightning strike doesn't hit the NAS and blow it up. Having even a backup drive doesn't help if both drives fail at the same time.

          • @hollykryten: Most people who care about their data have their NAS plugged into a UPS.

      • I will buy 4x 16tb for my nas once prices become semi-reasonable. I have a surge protector connected but should probably grab a UPS then too.

    • people kept telling me SSD would replace HDD for good. I've been hearing this every year for at least 10 years now. When are we getting 16TB SSDs?

  • I cbf posting a new deal seeming the abuse I get from randoms on here when I try to contribute. But I just got a 14TB from Ninja.buy with the 20% off code for $580 delivered. So that is $41.42 a TB which is pretty damn good considering our dollar is in the toilet and I need to use this as my main drive and relegate the 8TB to be a mirror.

    • If you find a good deal, don't be afraid to post it. Without knowing what feedback you were given by randoms, it's hard to say whether it was constructive/well-intentioned or not, but I wouldn't stress too much about it.

      • In a perfect world, I get your point. But it's happened again and again. A few weeks ago I posted a deal for Sony XM3 earbuds after Amazon had a good price and I price matched in-store at JB Hifi even though it was backordered on Amazon, and uploaded a receipt on here. My comment got downvoted for that.

        • That's a shame. It's always easier said than done but try not to take downvotes too seriously. They could be for any magnitude of reasons, some more justified than others…

  • How are the Seagate drives recently? Bought a 2TB and 3TB Barracuda drive in 2012 and both have died well before any of my other drives - has the quality improved?

    • +2

This Seagate Ironwolf with Helium - 14TB is amazing. It is raping my Seagate Ironwolf 8TB which I am mirroring right now, which is no slouch itself.

Also the 8TB is hot! This is the biggest one still on air. I didn't realise how hot they get until I bought one. Currently this syncing has been going for 30 minutes, the 8TB is running at 45 degrees, with a fan running across it. When I didn't have a fan when first used in an external caddy sitting on my desk, it went up to 57 degrees, which is close to the max temp of 60!

Meanwhile, the new 14TB helium is in the bottom of my case near the PSU in a seperate section, which has no fan at all. It's cool as a cucumber at 38 degrees while transferring at 240MB/sec for the past half hour.

      • Thanks for the in-depth answer! Might have to give them one more go…
