Just received the JB HiFi catalogue for April 2 to 15. Unfortunately I can’t find an online link for the catalogue (see link below for photos of the catalogue)

Half price Google Home Max ($198) at JB HiFi starting this Thursday April 2, until Wednesday April 15. Enjoy.

Edit: given the current situation, try to get it delivered if possible ($9.95 or so), otherwise remember social distancing, and most importantly, look after yourself, your loved ones and be kind to others. Stay safe!

      • There's a chance of stagflation, however if this occurs I believe retailers will have to slash prices to create demand

    • +4

Thanks. Won't buy this. I'll get that beautiful house in Highgate Hill instead.

      • +2

If you buy the house at least the government will bail you out

    • Yes! thank you so much for your insight

… and also for convincing me to buy one 😅

    • What happened to buy now worry later?

    • I kinda agree - but if you want the economy to keep turning over, people need to keep spending money. That's what the stimulus is for. If people stop spending, businesses don't make money, and people lose more jobs. These businesses need to pay their debts with money that we spend. If people just bank the stimulus, it will do nothing at all.

Having said all this, you're better off buying anything local, or just made in Australia. Buying specials from jb hifi won't help much.

    • Disagree; now is the time to spend to keep the economy afloat and it makes sense for the consumer with record low interest rates.

      • +2

We have been spending beyond our means for decades.

        Up to you though.

At them moment major stockmarket/economic collapses are occuring every 10 to 12 years with each being more severe than the previous.

Next economic collapse will occur with governments globally bankrupt and interest rates at 0% to 0.5%.

How severe do you think the next economic shock will be? Will you be in debt during the next downturn?

        • if you have a secure source of income, there's never been a better time to be in debt.

          …unfortunately I don't anymore

couldn't agree more…Some people still living in cockoo's land thinking it will be sunshine and rainbows, once it's over.

    • If you need to. Don't assume everyone on here is unable to ride this out. A lot of ozbargainers seem to be very smart with their money and well prepared for this.

    • @Chumlee, what happened to the fun guy who used to make dirty puns? You're all gloom and doom lately:(

      • +1

This is locked at home Chumlee.

        You're thinking of freedom Chumlee

        • +1

Poor Chumlee, a prisoner in his own home. #savechumleefromhisfamily

    • +1

That's right. Instead of buying this speaker, you should consider a cheaper device like Echo … As least when depression hits, you can say "This is so sad Alexa play Despacito."

  • How does this sound compared to a sonos one gen 2?

    • I have both. I'm not an audiophile but I'd say the sonos is slightly better sound quality, while the max has a bit more bass and much more volume.

If you have other google home audio products the max plays nicer with them, and doesn't need any of the (imo annoying) sonos app/accounts/set up etc.

On balance I'd say the max is a much better option at this price.

  • Can it be wall mounted?

    • +2

it's pretty heavy and nothing to really mount it to, you would need a shelf

  • Anywhere we can see the full catalogue?

  • Worth getting over a homepod if im basically a sucker for the apple ecosystem? Got an iphone, ipad, imac

    • +3

still not worth it even if you have 3 of every other device they make.
      Siri is just terrible

      • How many years had siri been around now?

    • +1

Definitely. The homepod is overrated and overpriced.

  • +3

Thank you for posting the full catalogue

    • No worries, glad it’s of use :)

  • +1

    This or yas209?

  • +1

Is this really that much better than simple google mini apart from better speaker? Someone with both could shed some light?

    • +1

That's exactly what it is - a better sounding home mini that gets really loud and has the best assistant built in

    • As Droz says - not really better other than the speaker.

I think it has more mics so you might get marginally better responses. Also has aux input and can be stereo paired.

      • +1

I have the Google max, home and mini in my house and the Max mics seem to be the least sensitive. Constantly having to shout at it compared with the other 2. Have read other reviews, post purchase, where others experienced the same thing.

        • I've read this too, honestly sounds like a deal-breaker.

  • Cheapest it's been?

    I'm buying one thanks OP.

    • Nice, glad you're getting a good deal in the end

  • Amazing deal. Btw these sound fantastic in a stereo pair 😉

  • I really wanted a Sonos Play 5 until I found it can't do bluetooth.

Can I just use this as a Bluetooth speaker without it connecting to the wifi/internet?

    • You need wifi to setup and turn on Bluetooth each time. It doesn't have a dedicated button.

  • $200 for the occasional ask it what time is it, or whats the weather :/

    • +2

Some ppl have the max as their main listening device.

    • I ask my Max to read the news for me in the morning when I get changed for work and play music when I get home from work

  • For those who are wanting to use this as a tablet for playing youtube videos etc.. be aware there is no virtual keyboard for typing.
So either you are very specific in your search, or you will need to stream from your phone.
I had no idea when I purchased and it's a little frustrating to not be able to play videos from your playlist, or recommended based on history. It's now a digital frame, clock and alarm for me.

    • This post of for the max speaker

      • +2

oh lol… that's what I get for posting without coffee!

well then yes, this would be even worse for Youtube!

  • Tempted at half price

  • Hang on. Isn't there a Max 2?

    • No I don't believe so. You may be thinking of the nest hub max?

    • In thinking a new one might be coming and they're clearing out stock of the current one. Either way, bought two.

  • +2
    • Thanks. It is pretty chunky at 337 x 190 x 154mm and weighing 5.3kg.

Even though it's not a smart speaker, I'll happily stick with my Bose Soundlink Mini II for $101, and save the $199 for some sharemarket bargains.

  • Don't think buying stuff from JB hifi is called essential. But then PM thinks buying jig saw puzzle is essential for kids.

That means adult can buy gadgets as essentials?

    Confusing

    • +1

Balance between locking yourself in a cell and going crazy doing nothing vs risk of increased infection but better mental health. A ton a grey area, every person is different. Each level of lockdown is different, we aren't at full lockdown yet.

  • Damn that's a good deal. I must resist on half pay right now until I get the gov boost for my business

  • $10 delivery weighs over 5kg.

    Seems reasonable.

  • +1

Thanks mate, will buy two from my $1100 saving.

    • Or don’t buy two and save another $400.

  • Hopefully OW will price beat and have stock.

  • House is chockers with all sorts of bluetooth speakers - never heard of this

Excellent reviews, but can I stop the overlords listen to everything we say nearby?

    • The Google Home devices have a physical mute switch that reportedly disables the microphones on a hardware level.

      • But how does the Assistant respond with "your mic is turned off…" when you talk to it?

  • +1

This or a soundbar or edifier bookshelf speakers for my tv?

  • Anyone know how this compares to the Yamaha yas209 which was 345 at one point? https://www.harveynorman.com.au/yamaha-yas-209-2-1-channel-s…

  • I bought the Sony LF S50G two days ago! :'(

  • This deal is now active! I don't know why it's one day early but I've just purchased it for half the price.

    • Prob because everyone else is selling at 198-199 as well (see below)

  • +3

FYI - Seems to be the sale price everywhere, other stores are already selling it today. OP might want to update

Officeworks - 198 (Limited stock on Charcoal for delivery) + free delivery https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/search?q=goo…

    Good Guys - 199 + 10 for delivery or Free C&C
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&sto…

    Harvey Norman - 198 + 7.95 for delivery or Free C&C
    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=Goog…

Ended up with Harvey norman - 5% discount gift cards + needed a Charcoal one.

    Thanks OP

    • It was obvious this was a Google promotion. Thanks for the links.

      • Except Google is still selling them directly for 399?

        • The last few times Google site was just late to the party- even JB was listed for tomorrow. Unlikely stores are doing this without an incentive to move the product.

        • Google's now listing them as a "special offer" for $199 at https://store.google.com/config/google_home_max too.

          • @pcolby78: Seems Google gave suppliers a 7 day head start to help them move some stock.

    • Thanks for the links. Separate posts have been made (bit late to the party for me), so all good, I think the OzBargain community are aware

  • Can confirm this deal is live online now! Just bought two in charcoal.

Thanks OP, been wanting to jump on these for ages, just the price was putting me off.

    • Nice, glad you got a good deal in the end. Some reward in patience sometimes.

  • +1

Thanks OP - couldn't resist at that price and wanted to make sure I can play music sufficiently loud enough to entertain the neighbors (who are no longer able to come round and complain).

    • Yeah I bit the bullet too.

To be honest it was hard not buying 2 of these bad boys. If the new standard price remains $199 as some are suggesting, I might get another later, ozbargain style when it's $159.20 via eBay 20% code :)

    • +2

Just got it home, set it up and asked google to start playing some music. The sound is really good, much, much better than the mini and standard home units.

If anyone is on the fence, at this price get off it and go buy one!

  • anyone using this as a tv soundbar alternative?

    • +1

I might later… I hear lag was a huge issue at first but they've since fixed that so I see no reason why it shouldn't do the job very nicely.

    • I used this as TV speaker before. Connected with an AUX cable.

      • no good?

        • It's good lol.
But now I just use my other speakers for the TV and have the Max upstairs with me :P

  • +1

Bought 2 of them…and now think what to do with it in my small apartment 🤔
