And I use to believe that people would never spend $1000 on a phone…

5G is still pretty unless for most of us, but its a nice huge phone. Bigger than the S10+.
Unlocked but Telstra Branded.

    Say hello to $4k phones

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/huawei-mate-xs-5g-512gb-b…

Though I sort of understand why a product like that might command a premium, it's still insane how expensive it is

    • +16

And it doesn't even have Google services or store officially.

      • +3

Shh, if you say that they'll take their phones off you.

      • +2

just install it after you buy it's easy

      • +1

Yeah but you can brag to the Jones next door that you got a 10 for the price of a 20 and that it was the last one!

    • +11

      Say hello to $4k phones

      Hi

    • +2

I get that Apple and Samsung can charge a premium since they have a bit of a reputation to back it up. But why anyone would spend big money on unreliable Chinese brands is beyond me.

      • +4

        big money

In comparison to the Apple and Samsung equivalent, they are much cheaper.

        unreliable

They're actually really good, but like everything, some products are duds.

        • +2

Neither Apple nor Samsung make a $4k phone.

          • +1

@1st-Amendment: Not yet, I'm sure they'll catch up eventually.

I actually thought your comment was about the brands overall, not just the one phone.

I do think it is very expensive. It also looks great.

      • +2

Not many will and Huawei won't be making tons of them either. This product isn't made to generate sales.

      • The reputation for fire n explosion or selling Exynos for the same price as QualComm? Isn't it too dear?

        • +2

          Translate?

          • @mickeyjuiceman: 1) Samsung had the Note (7) that was in the news a lot for exploding. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=samsung+note+explodes&ia=we…

            2) Samsung phones (eg: s20) have QualComm Snapdragon chips in certain versions of their phone (based on region/country) and Samsung's Exynos chips in other versions. https://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s20-snapdragon-vs-ex…
People say the QualComm is a superior chip.

Between the Snapdragon and Exynos variants of the Galaxy S20 Plus, the numbers confirm what we’ve suspected. For day-to-day use, CPU-heavy applications, the performance difference is minimal and most users will be more than satisfied with either phone.

GPU-bound performance is, however, a very different story. The Adreno 650 GPU delivers significantly better performance across all combinations of resolution and refresh rates. Additionally, you will definitely suffer a significant performance penalty on the Exynos 990 version of the Galaxy S20 Plus if you want to push for better battery life by keeping the phone at the default Full HD resolution at 60Hz.

If the best performance is a key criteria for you, the Snapdragon 865-packing Galaxy S20 Plus is what you want

    It's kinda confusing this whole 10s 10s+ 10s5g

At first I thought the 5g is a regular 10s with 5g but NoOooOo it's one of the bigger phones around. Bigger than the +

    Confusing.

    Just call them
    Phone
    Big phone
    Bigger phone
    Biggest phone

    Why complicate it :(

    • +22

The engineers did call it that… then it got passed on to the Marketing team…

      • +1

Why didn't they use the term X to denote 10 though? X is so edgy.

        • Some companies marketing team that can't be named in this thread beat them to it… Can't have that 'ur a copy cat' label u know… 😂

          • @scud70: Yeah I was dancing around that company's name. Guess Samsung wouldn't want to get sued, you know!

    • Don't forget the s10e and S10 lite

  • +2

    Honest questions,
Why do you need such a big phone?
    Can you handle it?

    • +5

Some have bigger hands than others.

I just prefer a big phone because I watch a lot of media on my phone.

Also read lots also. The bigger the screen the better for my failing eyesight.

      • +1

        Ok thanks

      • +2

Phones aren't good for eyesight period.

        Try a book.

        • +26

A little hard to read ozb or arstechnica off a book though. Some say impossibru.

          • +2

@xoom: Wait for a bargain on a printer?

            • +2

@justtoreply: It's not a bargain anymore when you needs to reprint (F5) it every 10 seconds

              • @ltbp: Why not a Kindle Paperwhite?

                • @JediJan: Is that a printer?

                  • @ltbp: No … But they are supposed to be about the best to read e-books on, and not waste paper / ink on printing. Bought my mother one who has eyesight problems. Handy size too.

    • I had this phone for a year, could easily one hand it.

Have upgraded to the S20 Ultra. I can one hand that one as well except the stupid flip case I've got for it is an absolute @$#@% to hold onto…

Side note, S20 Ultra sucks and I have massive buyers regret.

      • +1

Hi Ruddaga, just curious why the S20 pales in comparison to S10 5G. Thanks!

        • +2

Specifically the S20 Ultra is just not a good phone. Cameras they released for it are a joke (the S20 and S20 + both have Sony cameras in them, Samsung put their own crappy non working camera into the Ultra which they're still trying to patch to fix).

Feels sluggish and unresponsive alot. First time in owning a Flagship Samsung that I've felt a bit ripped tbh. I would say if you're looking for an S20, get the S20 or S20 +, not the ultra.

          • +1

@Ruddaga: Had no idea they used a different camera in the s20 ultra. Looking at specs of s20 and s20+ screen size are they alot bigger? I have a s8+ and generally s9+ and s10+ coreesponded to same size. But ive noticed the s20 seems to be similar size….. so is the s20+ now larger in size than the old s8+/s9+ etc?

Is a s20 a much better upgrade from my s8+ rather than trting to get a s10 on a deal? Just trying to get a future proof good camera given the huawei 40pro was reputedly great - but no google kills it. S20 ultra was meant to be next best of latest gen but sounds like best to stay away from what you say.

            • +1

@SaberX: Having owned an S6 - S20, I would suggest just going the S20 over the S10 just because I believe on specs the S20 > the S10.

Yes, Samsung really stuffed up with the S20 Ultra. Very disappointing :(

              • @Ruddaga: I thought on previous iterations like my samsung s8+, the s8 was just a size difference of screen? And there were no specs differences? With the s20 vs s20+ what are the differences in specs if you don't mind me asking? BEsides the screen?

And looking at gsm arena the s20 has listed the same screen size as a s8+? Which doesn't follow the prior conventions where i would have thought the s20+ would be the same sizing as the s8+ as the s9 + and s10+ they followed identical physical sizing ? So has thrown me off abit?

That said you can't get 5G with the s20 can you? or s20+ Just to futureproof? Without increasing the screen size past the typical s8+ size? AS I find that's at my limit for one handing, and mainly to fit in my pants pockets.

I also hear rumours on reviews and comments always on s20 ozb posts about Exynos versions? What is the issue with Exynos processors over Snapdragon? Is it an overheating/glitch issue, and to avoid until we can get ahold of a phone with snapdragon instead?

            • @SaberX: S20 / S20+ (depending on your size preference) is definitely the way to go if you are upgrading and want to future proof. The good thing is that Samsung did not skim on feature list for S20 so it's almost par with S20+ (they skimmed a lot with S10e).
One the best but underrated feature on these S20 series is 120 Hz screen refresh rate (but only works when display is set to 1080p - there is demand from community to allow this higher refresh setting for high resolution as well sacrificing battery life).
Most people who have used higher resolution refresh rate are unwilling to go back to the standard 60 Hz refresh rate screen.

              • @bajirao: thanks @bajirao - see my response to Ruddaga above, but just wondering what are some of the differences between the models? AS I thought specs wise apart from screen size the phones were generally identical?

With the refresh rate, what is the purpose of 120hz that people won't go back to 60hz even sacrificing battery life? I thought refresh rate would be mainly applicable for gaming? In absence of gaming why else would you want the 120hz at the expense of I presume a material reduction in battery life?

                • @SaberX: Samsung had started to tinker with their S series lineup last year with S10e nomenclature. Thankfully they reverted back to the usual S20, S20+ and S20 ultra this year. Last year S10e had quite some features cut when compared to S10 but this year thankfully S20 has almost same features as S20+ (with the exception of an extra rear camera which you may not need and bit smaller battery). So basically it just comes down to screen size (and since number of pixels are same, you actually get a higher pixel density in the smaller S20 which is good)
S20 is offered in 5G variant as well.
Regarding the refresh rate, it applies to menu navigation, settings etc everything. It's something to be seen and experienced (very difficult for youtubers to show it on video). Note that Samsung has done a software limitation where if you want to use 120 Hz then the screen resolution will come to down to FHD. Higher resolution setting only allows the standard 60 Hz due to impact on battery drainage. There is a demand from community to make the option of 120 Hz available at higher resolution and let users decide the option they want. You can check this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcwHhvtEFac
There is another mega thread on the EPP offer (and I wished this Edu thread was merged in that one because there is a lot of good discussion in that thread). You can check out that thread - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/533074

      • Whats the regret around? I'm not regretting the S20+ except that the camera isn't as magical as I'd hoped in comparison to iPhones I've seen.

        • +2

          A friend has the S20+, and it's a better phone / deal.

Note that I'm referring to the Ultra specifically not the S20 or S20 +. The Ultra is extremely overpriced, and isn't a better phone.

The S20 Ultra camera is a complete farce. My S10 5G took better pics.

          • @Ruddaga: Is it just the lack of value or are there features you specifically aren't happy with? How have you found the camera?

            • +1

@sheepdog: The camera on the Ultra is a bad camera.

Even after the 3 patches they've released (in a panic) it just does not take good pictures. Especially for a phone that costs this much. As mentioned previously, the S20 and S20 + have Sony cameras in them which take good pictures, the S20 Ultra has a custom Samsung camera that was touted for all this high tech stuff, but in reality the 100x is a novelty that doesn't take usable pictures and the 8k footage is passable but doesn't really have a practical use.

I had the S10 5G prior, and it just felt like a better snappier phone. I had major buyers regret after swapping to this phone. My friend has the S20 + and I've played around with that, and given the cost different + the camera on the S20+ is actually better, I would suggest anyone looking for the big Samsung phone this gen to go the S20+ or wait for the Note and see if they iron out the kinks.

              • @Ruddaga: Is the camera on a s10 5g or s10+ comparatively good to the s20/s20+? Or for the price difference is it worth jusr getting the latest? If the phone performance for everyday use doesnt differ much and particularly the camera then probably save the money… i think s10 5g is near 1k and a few hundred dollars gets you the latest s20…

                • +1

@SaberX: From personal experience, the camera on the S10 5G was absolutely mint. I've only played around with the S20 +, but it seems to be at least the same quality camera.

If you're patient just wait for a deal. The S20's are not selling well and Samsung keeps pushing good deals with them (the S20+ you could get for the same price as the S20 recently).

                  • @Ruddaga: I read somewhere but I forget where it is.
Is the S20 has issue with exynos because easily overheat?
Is this apply to all S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra?
                    Please let me know. Thanks

                    • +1

@surat: I haven't noticed any over heating with the Ultra. Well any more than a normal phone that runs these days. It gets warm if extreme use but not alarmingly so.

                  • @Ruddaga: how do the cameras on these s20/s10 phones compare to other chinese flagships though? I read alot about huawei before it got banned, but many were caling the mate 30pro the best camera at the time. same for the 40p out now. But with xiaomi, oppo, one plus coming out with phones, and redmi, are any of these cameras and hardware actually top line compared to samsung? Or are they just cheap, get the job done junkets?

that said once upon a time the google pixels were touted as great cameras, are the latest google pixel phones just ok, and not top of the line cameras?

I mean most phones these days do all your basic processing, web browsing, movies and screens well compared to a s8+ era, so you're guaranteed that. So really all that's left is the better camera in general, storage space and more importantly battery life…. as getting a few hours extra battery makes a world of difference to me when out and about browsing…

  • +2

This phone has a headphone jack if its important to anyone, I have also found cases can be harder to pick up as it is not as common as the regular s10 or plus

    • -1

Let me introduce you to the world of online shopping.

      • Still hard to find a decent cover for them. I have this phone and it took ages to be able to find a good case at a reasonable price

  • +3

How can you have such a big phone and only one sim?

    • +3

Big daddy Telstra doesn't like dual sim.

      • Big SIM envy

    • Surprised no esim either

  • +1

Gee, it's almost as if this was overpriced on initial release.

  • Better than some $1000+ Chinese phones, but with a S20 coming out and all I don't think this is a bargain even at this price, unless you need a 3.5mm audio jack.

  • I have this phone and am currently using it. It's the last flagship that Samsung released with a headphone jack, but it is not worth the $1100 price tag.

    • Why?

      • Because it's a year old.

        • The S10 lite is a 2020 phone if people don't want the s20 prices or need all the features

  • +2

    "Save $1100"

    LOL.

  • I have this exact phone in green (also 512GB) and it's been one of my favourite phones.

  • is this better than the note 10+

    • I had this phone. I would say it is on par with the Note 10+.

The cameras on it are to die for and served me well on my Europe trip last year.

If I had to recommend, I would probably find someone with an education account, and get them to buy you an S20 5G instead for 100.00 more.

  • +5

And I use to believe that people would never spend $1000 on a phone…

We live in a morally bankrupt country where people buy brand name water so that people like them.

  • Is the s10 5G a better phone than the s20+?

    Tossing up between s10 5G vs s20+
Just reading specs they both contain same mah battery and exynos. if anything the s20+ has a slightly better camera .. but the s10 5g has 5g ..

    Decisions, decisions??

    • If it was me I would go with the Samsung S10 5G. Future proof yourself a little bit.

    • +1

No doubt got for the s20+ if they're around the same price.

s20+ comes in 4g/5g variants. The 5g variant has an extra 4gb ram (making it a total of 12gb)

Honestly, I don't see 5g being widespread in Australia even 2 years from now on. At the moment the coverage of 5g is piss poor and to even get it in the first place you will need to pay a hefty premium. So personally, whether or not a phone has 5g doesn't sway my purchasing decision much

      • It does depend on the situation and where he/shelives I guess. Most Telstra legacy plans have it included. I was lucky and am in a 5G coverage area with unlimited data at full speed. 4G is super congested even for Telstra in these covid times, peak hour and major events so 5G may be an option for the future. S20+ 5g is $500 more so it's not a bad option.

      • Thats what people said about 3g and 4g but i've learnt that its always better to future proof for a ~$100 extra. Worth it.

    • I was bout to get the s20+ 4g 128gb last fortnight when JB HiFi had it for $649 on a $65 Telstra 12 month plan.
I'm currently on a $35pm Telstra BYO plan (also from JB HiFi).
      So if I got that I would have saved only $90 over 12 months ($649 + $30pm x12) compared to buying this s10 5g 512gb outright.
I do like knowing the phone jack exists with the s10 5g and knowing it has a whopping 512gb.
5g is of no concern to me at the moment to be honest.
I'd choose camera quality any day over a phone jack since I use wireless earbuds.

But performance wise the s10 5g and s20+ 4g are on par aren't they?

      • Why get an old model phone if ur spending that much on it.. s20 should be way ahead unless Samsung build newer phones to be crappier than their old ones uhgng

        • I hear ya gavman. That's one of the cons against the s10 for me.
Having said that, specs are pretty much on par with the s20+ 128gb 4g but the s10 has 4 times the storage space???

  • +3

Seriously, RRP $2200 for a old model phone. Personally wouldn't spend $1100 on a phone thats not even latest model and over a year old. Its an average deal

    • If you compare the prices else where, its actually a ~$500 saving.

  • I had one of these phones and android was not for me. Exynos battery drain was one problem for me and the resale value isnt great… you can find them on ebay for the $800 mark. Also the front camera takes a larger chunk out of the side of the screen compared to the S10+, I would have rathered the Note pinhole camera.

    • I have seen posts even on the s20 ozb posts about Exynos vs snapdragon, what is so bad about Exynos as everyone seems to cringe at it but don't really write what's wrong with it? Does it cause overheating and battery drain? Or is it a physical issue, or a software issue that could be patched eventually?

      • You are paying the same for less performance.

  • Oooh! I have the S10 5G - wonderful phone, bought it 2 months after launch. At the time it wasn't even released in Australia so I imported from SKorea from a dodgy website for $1200. The discounted price was great but not being supported by samsung was pretty bad. It hurts even more that the screen now has a crack in it. Still haven't actually used the 5G functionality which blows a bit.

  • Does anyone know when does this deal expire? Im still waiting for my JB giftcards from velocity.

  • Bought one yesterday. I didn't see any Telstra branding logo, only 2 Telstra files which I uninstalled. The phone went through 3 updates on set up and happy to see it now had Android 10. Really nice phone.
