Google Nest Hub $129 Free Click + Collect/+ Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

1010

Hey guys! I was planning to buy one of these yesterday for $179.
Thank god I didn't get to buy it. Cos today I see it for $129.
GG, HN and JB have it now for $129.
OW still has it for $179, so if you are quick, get them to price beat for 5% less than $129 :)

Thanks OP, Good deal, If you can get it at officeworks it comes down to $122.55

  • I notice Amazon have just dropped the price of their smaller Echo Show 5 from $129 to $99 as well.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07KD7TJD8/ref=pc_gw_ech_fmly_m…

I managed to pick one up for free as compensation for a Echo spot with common screen flicker problem.

Edit: Also OW price beat would bring down to $94.05

Was it hard to get them to replace it?

Not too bad it was well out of warranty and he said pity you didn’t notify Earlier while it was still under warranty. I then mentioned that under Australian consumer law I still have rights and without any argument he instructed me to buy a new one and they would refund me. No dramas at all

Also $129 (delivered) direct from Google if you don't have any locals https://store.google.com/au/product/google_nest_hub

    • +2

The other benefit with buying via Google is you get 3% of the purchase price as Google credit. It's only a little under 4 bucks, but still. That pays for a month and a half of extra Google One storage!

    • Shipping is also free w/ Google

      • +7

Some of the fastest shipping I have ever experienced is via google,

They shipped same day when I ordered (pre COVID19) and it arrived the same day.

Highly recommend buying directly from google store when you can.

Google has also dropped the Nest Hub Max from $349 down to $299 as well (OW, GG, JB, HN already matched). Not as cheap as some deals late last year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/506274) that had it down to around $247.20 + delivery, but cheapest it's been for a while.

    • Tempted to go for the bigger screen and speaker, but then I guess I can Bluetooth to my stereo - when BT dropout issue is fixed

      • The bigger screen on the Nest Hub Max is very nice. Good screen resolution as well and there is decent bass in the speaker! I got my Mum one of these for her birthday and she uses it for video calling (Google Duo) her family all around the world!

        • I'd have mine in the kitchen so unlikely to use for video (use Skype on tablet) so primary use would be photo, calendar and recipes. Still… bigger screen is nice

Not sure if that's changed recently, but you can definitely Chromecast to it no worries (at least with YouTube)

    • Hey, you can cast youtube videos to the hub to watch and can connect to your chromecast devices easily (i have audio and original cc)

    • You can play YouTube videos on the Hub from the iOS and Android YouTube apps on your phone/tablet.

I have had one for over a year and have been doing this since day one.

    • +6

FYI - this is not chromecast enabled - so you can't cast youtube videos from your phone.

I cast to it all the time, it works fine… Video and audio.

    • Ahh yeah they are chromecast enabled, I regularly cast things from my Plex server (music, tv shows) to my hub in the kitchen. You're right the audio is probably a little under the original google home (certainly didn't live up to the Sonos One I used to have), but it's decent enough at higher volumes for a medium size room

So odd - I based my comment off this review https://www.whathifi.com/au/reviews/google-nest-hub

"It’s worth noting that one thing Google Nest Hub is not is a video player. The screen is a good screen, but a small screen. And while it does YouTube (which is quite the resource), you can’t send it anything else – you can’t ‘cast’ video to it, because it does not contain a video Chromecast."

    • I've cast YouTube, Netflix, Disneyplus & Kayo to my Home Hub many times

Ah good reminder still got this sitting in a box from the telstra deal…

    • +1

Well if OzB has taught me two things, its when NOT to sell something if you are planning on doing so.

    • Sell it to me!

    • gutted I missed that - still have 20,000 telstra points burning a hole in my pocket!!!

Not an amazing deal, but the best we can find at the moment. The Harvey Norman black friday two for $168 deal was amazing. I picked up two myself during that sale. Nest Hubs occassionally goes on sale for two for $200 at various locations. If you dont want one immediately, worth waiting in my opinion.

The hub max is better in every way but this is a great digital photo frame.

The sharp drop in Amazon and Google smart home devices just shows how poor the uptake is. You could argue differently and say that they are selling them as a loss leader to get you in to their ecosystem but that is not the main reason. These things are just not particularly useful.

    • +3

We use ours almost daily, mostly in the kitchen for timers, shopping list, reminders, music, slideshows etc. while cooking. Granted we use it less than we did initially, but basically now see as just another gadget that makes life easier.

      • +3

Totally agree. I have 3 Google Home devices spread through the house and use them constantly for music, timers, lighting and fan controls.

Oh, and finding my phone….that's a really handy feature (Google over-rides phones set to 'silent' and makes them ring loudly).

I'd say that the sharp drop in price reflects that these are increasingly cheap to produce, and also drives adoption of other parts of the ecosystem.

They're not useful for everyone. But there's a large number of people who do find it useful. You just happen to be in the first group.

It's exactly like smartwatches. Not everyone finds them useful, but there are plenty of people who find them very, very useful.

    • +2

Google's annual developer conference was scheduled in March and didn't go ahead due to the virus.

I'm assuming now that restrictions are slowly easing they're going to announce a new line-up of smart devices hence the discounts. No point in announcing new devicea last month with the uncertainty surrounding their manufacturing and customer sentiment.

  • Can we use this to cast to the TV?

    • you can cast to this google nest hub, or tell it to play videos

    • You can cast to the hub from certain apps/devices but not from it. If your TV supports casting then why not just cast from your phone/tablet/PC/etc?

  • You need to put the stores in the title.

  • Can this work with Ring doorbell?

    • No it doesn't

  • Max version is good to use around living room or kitchen but for bedside I would say the smaller hub is better as it won't take up much space on your bedside table.

    • Yes figured as much, waiting for 'Max' to drop, so I can put it in the kitchen, and put my home hub in the bedroom.

Are these viable to wall-mount somehow? Or an alternative model from Lenovo or whatever that might be?

<edit - looks like it's possible but the mounts are kinda weird>

Is this able to show Google Keep or a calendar as the main screen? Thinking of using it as a digital planner instead of just a clock and photo slideshow most of the time.

  • +2

I find these are somewhat useful, but only when it actually understands a command on the first try… incredibly frustrating when you're trying to adjust the lights and it suddenly blasts a random song in the middle of the night. The weird thing is that sometimes it does seem to recognise the words (e.g. "dim the lights" come up as text on screen) but still thinks you're trying to play music and won't stop until you shout "Ok google STOP it". There are lots of reviews saying it gets worse with time and I agree. It should get better, not worse, as it practises the same commands over and over. Am I doing something wrong..

    • Have exactly the same problem! And Google support have been very frustrating.

    • +2

The other night we had only a few of our lights on, and they were down real low (ok google, activate night time)… I was in my birthday suit headed for bed and walking through the very dark lounge room area and confidently issued the command "ok goggle, turn off all the lights". Two seconds later… "Ok, turning on 9 lights".

I assume the neighbours and the members of the public who happened to be nearby have recovered from the sight by now but for a brief, shining, pale, flabby moment there was quite the spectacle from the brightly illuminated open plan of our lounge room.

  • I have this in kitchen as I like to watch/listen YouTube when ever I cook.

But I still find myself streaming from my mobile although the sound quality from the nest hub is much better.

Only thing I like is the ability to voice control YouTube.

Only advice I can give is buy the Max instead of this one, at least then you'd stick with the nest hub longer as the screen is bigger :)

    • +1

But I still find myself streaming from my mobile although the sound quality from the nest hub is much better.

I just cast YouTube from my phone, that way I can watch it on a larger screen with louder speakers.

  • Damn, just brought one from good guys on the weekend, was cheaper than anywhere else. Oh well, it's a good little unit!

    • Return for change of mind? Covered by good guys policy
