  • Good deal. How easy is it to unlock?

    • +2

      Pretty easy with a third party service - it's linked in other threads about this phone.

      Picked up one for my son a couple of months or so ago - fantastic unit, absolutely exceeds my expectations, would recommend to anybody. Note - has also not had the GPS issue that some talk about?

    • +20

      I unlocked it a fortnight ago through FoneFunShop with zero issues (apart from emails going to junk folder while I was waiting for them!). For the $5ish nice and simple.

      As for the phone, very impressed for the price point. If you want the basic useability (web/maps/utility apps/music) then this is great. Very large battery and Samsung's low powered (but still decent performance CPU) keeps it to needing a charge once every 2+ days for me. Great screen. Unless you have a specific reason to need something high powered this will do the things you need well for a cheap price from a good manufacturer.

      Did case research and went with this one for $20: https://www.progadgets.com.au/spigen-galaxy-a20-rugged-armor… Youtube had videos of people dropping their phones in this case with no damage.

      Got at 64gb Samsung SD card to put in it for $20. So for $225 I have 32+64gb storage, 2 days battery, nice screen, good looking tough case and unlocked to a $10 carrier.

      Recommend.

      *edit, added more comments and fixed my maths.

        Or if you prefer a book style case this one is $7.99 and was delivered fast to me in northern rivers NSW.

        • It looks like the magnet sits right on top of the credit card in that photo. I assume no-one is actually going to put their credit card in their phone case, though.

          • @pjetson: No need to put your card in there the phone has NFC and Samsung Pay.

      • Did it come with a case? The A30 does but I want to know if the A20 is the same.

        • No case with the Optus A30

          • +1

            @Gaz1: No I got the Optus A30 and it definitely came with a free case. It wasn't some third party freebie either, it was official Samsung branded and included inside the main box. I'm just curious whether the A20 is the same as I'm thinking of picking it up too, but since it's a cheaper model I thought maybe they'd forgo it.

            • @lousemeister: I had another look & just found a clear rear cover - is that the one?

              • +1

                @Gaz1: That's it. It's not the spiffiest case but it's a free case nonetheless:)

            • @lousemeister: I bought the galaxy A20 for my mum the other week through the Office works deal and can confirm it doesn't come with a case. So I doubt it'd come with this one.

        • Based on my Googling when I was buying, these phones often have different pack-ins in different markets/carriers (eg headset, case, etc).

          My Vodafone A20 did NOT come with a case, but Big W had a promotion with a free case from CYGNETT so not bad.

      • I bought the same case from Amazon (currently unavailable though) to go on the phone from the Officeworks deal last week. Very happy with it. Very happy with the phone as well coming from an iPhone 4s.

      • Hey mate, was it Telstra locked?
        I don't see Telstra as carrier option on FonefunShop while trying to unlock

    • does anyone know if a case from more popular phones will fit it? like could i find a s10 case at kmart or something for it?

  • will this work on aldi/boost?

    • I was just about to ask the same re Aldi. Mum needs a new phone and don't want to stuff her around.

    • disregard my comment. thought you were asking about it working with their towers

    • +1

      YES

    • You might want to separate Aldi and Boost in your question. I have a phone that works with a Boost sim card but not Aldi.

  • does anyone know when the A21 is being released in Aus?

    • +1

      I assume soon. This is the second major discount on the A20 across 3 huge retailers within the last 2-3 weeks. I don't think this is a coincidence, they're obviously clearing stock for a reason.

  • +3

    Out of the box - Telstra Locked
    Aldi - No
    Boost - Yes

  • +8

    Got Android 10 on this A20 last week

    • May I ask - does it have Android Auto? A lot of the cheaper Android phones dont

      • +3

        It surely does.

      • +2

        Yea, I have used android auto on a20 connnected to a vw for 2 weeks. Works just fine
        Response time is slower, but thats expected for a sub $200 phone. No gps issues yet

    • same, made a massive difference in relation to the dreaded internal GPS issues, plus the OS seems a tiny bit faster

    • +3

      Made a huge difference. Did the update last night and love the new (for the A20) full screen gestures. No longer do I need to remember different swipes/where to swipe when switching from my iPhone XS/Pocophone F1 to the A20.

  • this or the Oppo 1

  • Is the GPS as bad as everyone says ?

    • There hasn't been any complaints from members on here buying it recently.

    • It's not that bad, it will lose signal a little earlier than my note 9 or S7 but nothing insane. It's about the same level as say an S5 or LG G3 era phone.

  • Is this better than an iphone 6? The screen of my Mi9 is gone for the third time and I'm not replacing it again. Am using an old iphone 6 I have and since I don't do nothing other than watching youtube it kinda does the job except that it takes 10 seconds to launch an app.

    • +1

      Yes, it will be better in nearly every way.
      More Ram;
      More storage;
      Better CPU ( https://versus.com/en/apple-a8-vs-samsung-exynos-7884 );
      Higher resolution screen;
      Better screen (AMOLED vs LCD);
      Better camera;
      Newer OS (iPhone 6 caps out at IOS 12);
      Etc.

      Also keeping in mind that Apple tends to slow down older IOS devices intentionally to 'save battery power' (their words)

      • +2

        "Also keeping in mind that Apple tends to slow down older IOS devices intentionally to 'save battery power' (their words)" this is an optional feature that can be turned off.

      • -6

        Iphone 6 is alum/metal case and built better where as this is cheap plastic - rubbishy build. U can pick pick up refurb iphone 7 for around 200 these day id probably take that over cheaper android devices .. realy depends on ur purpose / use

      • +1

        Better camera

        i had the A20 and the iphone 6 plus. the iphone had better image and video quality.

        • Could very well be, I fell for the Megapixel trap when comparing specs - which I know doesn't represent image quality.

      • Huge gorgeous screen, but finding it strangely slower than specs suggest (2x A73 @ 1.6 GHz).

    • Despite it being much newer, the A20 isn't that fast at opening Youtube. I know this because I bought the A20 as a Peppa Pig phone and it takes a little bit of time to get up and going.. but that being said, for the price, it is a very good experience IMO. The AMOLED screen is beautiful and everything about it impresses me at this price point.

      I also assume given you used Mi9 before, you probably aren't a stranger to Android in which case it should be great for you.

      If you were more locked in to the iOS ecosystem though, I'd probably have a different suggestion.

    How would people compare this phone against the Xiaomi Redmi 8 (3GB/32GB) which is slightly cheaper online? (The 4GB/64GB unit costs fractionally more.)

    The Redmi 8 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439, octa-core processor. How does that line up with the processor on this phone? I'm not clued-up on performance comparisons of processors.

    • +1

      Have a look: kimovil comparison

      • +1

        The wifi info for the A20 on that chart is incorrect. The A20 is limited to 2.4ghz wifi.

      • Thanks, a good resource. Although I'm not tech-minded, so I'm still none-the-clearer of which phone has the better grunt.

        Phones line up reasonably well. Xiaomi probably a bit richer in features. I love the 5000 mAh battery.

        • +1

          Probably negligible difference in real world use. Both utilising budget chips, the Xiaomi only uses a53 cores on its SoC, this core design has been utilised in budget SoCs since 2014. The exynos gets a couple of a73 cores in it’s SoC, the a73 newer and faster but how much real world impact that makes is probably too small to notice in most tasks. I would choose the Samsung myself.

    • +1

      Using Redmi 8+ currently. Cant fault it,

      Note that 8+ has NFC but i understand that Redmi 8 does not.

      A20 does have NFC

  • So this one is a single sim model?
    I found that there is a dual sim model of A20 cost $250 on ebay if you need dual sim.

  • Where can I buy it, any local coles?
    Cuz I cannot find at their website.

    • Yeah, at the service desk of any local Coles.

  • Will I see an improvement over my Mi A1?
    Looking for a cheap upgrade.
    The Mi A1 is still fine for me but I’ve cracked the screen in a few places and can’t be bothered replacing it.

  • Does anyone know if it’ll work with a Belong sim? TIA

    • +2

      not out of the box

  • On Google ads it's telling me that the A20 will drop to $55 at Officeworks, but when you click on it the price is $229…

    • +2

      Been driving around all morning and no Coles stores have them around me.

      • Bummer. My local Coles has two and I grabbed one this morning. Now to get Windows working somewhere so I can unlock…

      • None for me :( damn…

      • Can you get officeworks to pricebeat?

        • Tried. OW won't because theirs is an unlocked version. Same with JB and TGG. They have all had the A20s at this price themselves at some stage.

    • I had the same thing pop up on my phone. I think it was meant to be dropped by $55. I wish I had a screenshot of it.

  • +1

    Picked one up today from Cairnlea, Vic for my Dad and got it unlocked from FoneFunShop mentioned above (Arthur Dunger) for around $6. No issues

    • @Distance can you help with options you chose to unlock.

      I got one for my mum buy FOneFunShop does not list Telstra as carrier when I select Australia as region

  • +3

    Purchased one for our son (from Coles Collingwood, VIC) and tried to use Belong sim, but it didn't work. It is Telstra locked and I Unlocked it using the code from FoneFunShop following the process above. It unlocked without any problem and now it is working with Belong. It is a GREAT budget phone.

  • +1

    I was going to grab one of these for my mother in law so this deal was good timing.

    Couldn't find any at any of the Coles' I went to, but Big W had these up on their site for $229 but by the time I got there they are now up for $199, not as good a deal but still not bad at all if you are in the market for this specific phone and want to grab it under $200.

  • Went to 3 coles near me and none of them had it in stock. Bloody waste of time

  • +1

    No stock at Cokes Chadstone. Service desk lady said they sold out in week 1 of the 2 week promo.

  • I got one of these, I just rang a couple of stores first to see which one had stock on hand.

    Also used FoneFunShop for an unlocking code. Worked well.

    Edit: I know, Phones aren't on Coles Online. But maybe ring Head Office, they might tell you SOH for all stores.

  • Funfoneshop had Wacatac trojon detected in the server software?
    Anyone else get this or is it a false positive?

    • +1

      The instructions you received via email clearly states:

      "Note: If software disappears or wont download - Turn off antivirus / defender / anti-malware or exclude the folder you are running it from, the software is not malicious but is encrypted using themidia which your AV cannot read past so may quarantine it."

      My antivirus (Bitdefender) automatically quarantined the file.

      I had to disable it and the program unlocked my A20 successfully.

      • I bought the credits 6 hours ago and have not received any email, I have not had anything "clearly stated"

        • +1

          They are located in the UK so you need to wait for them to wake up and start work.
