@Ozbargainasaurus: No, I got conditionally approved for the limit I asked for, just provided payslips etc. Will update on the outcome.

  • Hi folks. I'm interested in this but I'm having trouble finding a fee-free account option to start with as I'm not a WP customer. It seems like the online-only account require you to first have one of the savings accounts that comes with a debit card, which has a $5 monthly fee. Can anything help me out please.

  • -1

    Does Paypal count?

  • These are the steps to follow if your not an existing Westpac customer:

    1) Open Westpac Choice (don't forget to cycle 2k through the account to avoid monthly service fee of $5 before end of month.
    2) Apply for card
    3) Once card is approved or received, call ask them to waiver bank account monthly account keeping fees or instruct them to close the account entirely. More than likely they will waiver the fees for 12 months in order to keep the account.

  • Thanks OP. Applied and got conditionally approved. Uploaded income verification docs and need to wait till that is finalized. The application is relatively easy and straightforward, takes less time than with the other banks.

  • Is it considered an eligible purchase if i use paypal linked with the credit card?

  • Need to read fine T&Cs. I'm a Westpac supplementary cardholder. Question is whether that qualifies me an an existing customer AND doesn't exclude me as having an existing credit card. I'm pretty sure I'm covered for the latter as the account isn't in my name but I need to check the former.

    • hey @gimme - how did you go
i am a suppl to my wife's card and i called them yesterday (applied over the weekend) and i asked them if i am eligible to get the bonus points and they say it is showing as ok.

  • The fine print on the website states that "To be eligible for up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points, you must apply and be approved for a new Altitude Black credit card between 1st April 2020 and 5th August 2020"

Does that mean that if we apply just before 5th August but not get approved immediately, we don't get the bonus points?

I already hold 1 amex, 1 ANZ FF Black + 1 WoolWorths Platnium, although all carry zero balances owing.

        Yeah I am actually, lol.

    • Same.
Web site first said needed to be verified and would bet a response in 2-3 days, then email for conditionally approved about 10 mins later asking for payslips.

Had the same card I closed about 16mths ago so an existing login.

Also have 2 other cards and only about a week ago cancelled ANZ FF black and an Amex.

            • @SBOB: Awesome, thanks

Got an email from them this morning saying my card is on the way + highlighting the T&C

"$0.00 annual fee in the first year from date of card approval: 11 May, 2020." :)

            • +1

@SBOB: The "Apply now" link within your PDF still works, and takes you to the form with the first year annual fees waived..

              • @mcbargainmeal: The apply now link in the PDF now asks you to sign in as an existing Westpac customer..

              • +2

@mcbargainmeal: I've gone through the apply now button on the PDF and logged in but still can't see anywhere that says the first year annual fee is waived on that page. I can just see the info/docs you need for the application listed, not details of the card. Can you point me in the right direction if I am going blind? Thanks!

  • I have created a new Westpac Choice account, and tried to complete a credit card application - but when I reach the end of the application process and press submit, an error message comes up saying the credit card form is currently unavailable, and to try again later.

Is anybody else having the same issue?

  • My login is still active from previous card I had with them which was more than a year ago. I applied for this and then called to confirm I was eligible for the no fee for the first year and the rep confirmed that I am.
One less hassle opening a new account.

  • Is the deal gone? The landing page no longer shows the bonuses but it's still in the T&Cs

    • Same here - got the account set up, and just went apply - now shows $250 as being the card fee…

  • Brand new to the points game, what's better QFF or Altitude points?

Applied Sunday and completely approved already at 9am this morning - seems the deal has been removed tho as above link moved

    • Depends what you're after… I went altitude this time as I plan to get gift cards with the points…

      • Hmm, i guess travel sounds enticing? but if the other is just much better $ value then i dont mind?

Would the 90k qantas points be worth foregoing the benefit of gift cards?

  • +1

Looks like its 250$ a year now :( Just cancelled my ANZ black and was about to jump ship!!!

  • +3

It seems this offer was probably oversubscribed & Westpac ended it early as they did previously.

  • What if you started and saved (but didn't finish your application) before they changed it?

    • That's what I'm wondering. I'll be trying to get it back if I am charged.

      • I would say the lodgement date is considered the date of your application.

  • Still showing here and in the T&Cs so best to confirm first.

    https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

  • Have they changed this offer? Showing $250 annual fees and not waiver anywhere?

  • +1

Why has this deal expired if it was meant to go through to August 5th?

    • Annual fee is now showing as $250 on the website - therefore deal marked expired

  • +1

I got my card today and couldn’t activate on app nor over the phone so I had to visit a branch. Whenever I get Westpac cc it’s always like having to activate in person.
Edit) long queue in the branch now and how annoying!!

    • Oh ffs, I don't wanna visit a branch.

    • could you activate the digital card in the app?
I did that and have already used it, prior to the card arriving.

  • How can I check that deal is available for me

  • How did they just increase the annual fee to $250?

  • Can I ask what sort of purchases you guys make to meet the minimum spend? I know the Woolworth e gift card is one of them but is there anything else out there that is worth considering?

    • +2

      Hookers.

      • didn't know they accept credit card…

        • Tap and go is where that phrase was from. Embedded butt microchip

    • If only there was a website where people post purchases that are bargains and worth buying!

      • +1

        Nah, it'd never catch on.

  • What is up with this deal only running for few days before they add the fee back? Same thing happened back in the beginning of April as well.

  • Are they still waiving the $250 annual card fee for the first year? Looking at Westpac website, it doesn't say anything about fee waiver….

    • +1

same here, just realised - applied and then saw the fee. On the phone now to get the application cancelled unless they waive the fee

      • That sucks mate. If you have to cancel, that application still stays on your credit file.

      • +2

How'd you go on the phone?

      • +1

Yes, also interested in what they said on the phone pls!

      • Any success getting the fees waived?

  • Hi,

Can anybody explain the two lounge passes "with eligible purchases"?

I've tried to click the link to see what you're required to do to get the free lounge visits, but can't seem to find it!

Any help would be much appreciated :)

    • I activated the qantas black yesterday and noticed that I already got the lounge passes.
edit) disregards this. I may have got this from other qantas card.

  • +1

Got approved at last. Applied on Saturday. Took a little while but all good in the end :).

  • +2

I applied the morning just before the offer disappeared (just in the nick of time!).
Got conditionally approved, submitted payslips, then received a call from an onshore agent suggesting I had other credit cards open (which had been cancelled some months ago).
After locating closure letters, I sent these through on email yesterday, called the call centre who confirmed receipt of these.
Today got the message of approval, to my surprise it allowed me to activate a digital version of the card along with adding it to Apple Pay right away.
I did check the doc that makes you confirm before activation in the app - it did have $0 annual for first year, then $249 the following year so I'm pretty sure I got the offer!
Pretty surprised with the whole process, last time around with Westpac I had to jump through hoops and follow up approval etc.

  • +3

Don't forget you can add an additional card holder at no extra cost, unlike ANZ black which charge $65.

    • With digital cards (Apple Pay, Google pay etc), additional card is redundant any way

      • This is for an additional card holder with a different name though. Are you saying that you actually put in your personal CC details into your partners iPhone and Apple watch (or equivalent) and let them use your CC just like that?

  • has anyone jumped through the hoops for the FF lounge passes? Is it still a case of spending >$1 on co2 offsets to qualify?

    • Yup

      • thanks. Did it yesterday anyway, so will see if it turns up :)

        • Anyone have a link on where to purchase $1 co2? Couldn't seem to find it.

          • +2

            @ezza: https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/

after registering for the lounge passes here
            https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/

I just picked a route from Syd which ended up over $1.. Syd-Mel just too short :)

            • @SBOB: Nice one!! thanks.
Just need to wait for the physical card to come in so I can register on the Westpac site (i think the digital one may be not be the same digits etc)

            • @SBOB: Is $1 is the minimum requirement to be elegible? Can't see it on the Altitude opt in website.

              • +1

@eecchhoo: its an unofficial value ive seen mentioned as an unofficial limit to exceed in AFF forum and here

No idea if its right or wrong. :)

The carbon offset definitely isnt in any kind of supported way to achieve the required spend on qantas products, and more a loop hole :)

                • -1

@SBOB: so is this for additional two passes (by Qantas) on top of the two passes entitled by getting this card (by Westpac)?

        • still haven't seen any lounge passes show up :/

  • approved at 11.27. Yay!
created a digital card and loaded it up on Apple Pay and Google Pay shortly afterwards. time to go shopping.

  • Is it an eligible transaction for Paying wa car registration ? Or council rates?

    • Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, government charges, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

But I haven't had any issues getting points after meeting the minimum spend criteria through rates etc with other bank cards even though they all seem to have these same conditions so YMMV - maybe they're getting stricter with catching these.

  • What's the next best card to churn after this + the ANZ black?

  • -1

Where on the page or T&C did you find the minimum income requirement figure?

  • Looks like I have been stung on this one. I applied on the same day this was posted, but didn't hear anything for over a week, so called on Monday, and they said there was some sort of IT error and they would process it now. Got approved today, but when I went to activate the digital card, I noticed it had the $250 fee. I called them up and they said that the offer was not for the general public and the $250 would be applicable. I asked them to escalate it which they said they would do, but doesn't sound promising. B*astards. Still trying to decide if I should just pay the annual fee since I've already had the credit check.

    • +5

If you genuinely applied via the promotional link + was an existing customer at the time, use the details below if they don't resolve it for you. Give them a chance first. This is their executive escalations / resolutions dept.

Lay out the details in short sentences + advise you will submit a complaint to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) if they don't resolve it.
Most likely they will just waiver the fee as it's not worth the trouble getting a customer dispute with AFCA.

      • Thanks mate. Yep I definitely applied via the link and have maintained an esaver account since my first churn in 2016. And yeah I should wait for their escalations dept to look into it first, it just really rubbed me up the wrong way from the guy on the phone who was telling me this was a targeted offer only sent to certain customers, even though that clearly wasn't the case.

Anyway good to know where to go next if the escalations dept can't sort it out.

        Cheers

        • Hey, did you end up having any resolution on this? I just got approved today (applied on the 10thMay) and i went through my account details and noticed:
$250.00 annual fee from date of card approval: 21 May , 2020.

Just called and no resolution - Called the Application service line, then transferred me to the card services and then back to the application service line where they told me that they can't do anything because the application has already been approved. Apparently, there is a promo code and it did not waived my annual fees.

          Thanks

          • +1

@yayo321: Not yet. The guy on the phone told me he has sent an email off to their escalations dept, and he is going to call me back tomorrow, but he said that they probably won't have an answer till next week. I told them I had saved a pdf of the offer, but they weren't interested in me emailing to them. I'll let you know what they say when I actually get an answer.

Did you also have an issue where the application wasn't processed immediately? They told me there was some internal IT issue, and I suspect that is was actually processed after the offer had been withdrawn, hence the reason for this happening.

            • @Tangenyahu: Thanks for the update. I don't think there was any IT issue regarding my application. I got the conditional approval on the same day I applied via email on the 10th May.

Reason it took so long: My application was sitting with a senior analyst when I called last Saturday. I decided to call them again this arvo when i still haven't heard anything from them. So today, the guy on phone followed up with the senior analyst and that's when my application got approved.

            • @Tangenyahu: Hey mate. I am running into the same issue as you. Have you received any updates regarding on this? Thanks in advanced!

              • @KDawgz: Mate just got a call back then. They basically said nothing new, and that their escalations dept said it was an offer that was sent around to specific people through their online banking, and that if you didn't personally receive that offer, then it was not available to you, and that their records indicate it wasn't sent to me.

At the end of the day I'll probably still activate my card, as if someone offered to sell me 90,000 points for $300 I would take it every day of the week, and I'm due for a new card and don't want another hit on my credit file, but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth with Westpac. I certainly won't spend a cent over $4k on this card.

My only solace is that Westpac will hopefully lose money from all the Ozb's who got away with this and then shut their accounts down as soon as the points hit.

                • @Tangenyahu: What a bummer, you chased a deal but stung by the deal. Hope you got the most out of it and end it.
Edit) if I were in this situation I must be really furious. Sorry mate.

                  • @Unacceptable: Thanks mate. Yeah I'm annoyed, but I've paid the same annual fee with NAB before for the same amount of points when I'd run out of other cards to churn, so best to have some perspective and not let it annoy me too much.
