Some things to be aware of:
Because this is a new plan, we don't yet know what the typical evening peak speed will be, so you'll notice that our Critical Information Summary and Key Fact Sheets for now just list the 250 plan peak evening speeds. We think the plan should achieve off-peak speeds of up to 80-90%, depending on the technology type.

If you work for the coal lobby a cool few million will suffice.

        • +6

Could probably even get it for a fatty slab of chicken Palmer.

      • I heard the price it quite reasonable.

1 x vegemite sandwich and a 6 pack of Fosters should seal the deal

        • +1

          The Vegemite sandwich makes sense.
Dunno what on earth could of justified the need for pack of Fosters in there too, though..

      • +3

Whatever they're askin, tell em they're dreamin..

    • To be honest I don't think we're that bad considering our wages

      • +1

LoL it depends on what you're using your wages for. If you already got an appreciating BMW then there might not be much left for everything else.

  • +12

Good luck everyone on HFC! May the odds ever be in your favor

  • +2

New customers might be able to use this to get $10 off per month for 6 months??

  • +1

Has anyone actually done the FTTC to FTTP upgrade, and if so what was the cost?

    • +2

It honestly depends, I've heard some people have it cost $1200 some $12000.
You have to pay the inspection fee to find out : )

    • +4

A whirlpool thread on switching to FTTP: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/97wjj0k9
      That thread's spreadsheet: https://goo.gl/YfbdSv
TL;DR: Varies significantly, but at least a few thousand dollars

    • +3

CBD Byron Bay, 30m to the Telstra box on the street = $12,000

    • $330 quote fee (inclided in final costs)
and ranges from 4k-30k or so. It really depends on your conditions.

  • +4

And here I am, stuck with ADSL2+. I'm happy for everyone else who'll be getting this. Just hoping NBN in my area gets activated at the end of this week. *sigh

    • Same boat. NBN was predicted to be in my area between April-May, so of course it's the last week of May hahah just hope it's not any longer

      • +1

A few predictions and a handful of delays. My hopes are high for this weekend, so best of luck to us!

        • +1

Mine originally said January to June 2019, now finally getting my service (FTTN) activated this Friday… Hopefully

      • NBN was meant to be finished in 2016!

        • 2016 for 30 billion iirc. Labors estimate was 2021 for 40 something billion (45 ish?)

We're on target for Labors estimates (over budget, a year off), but with a network that's pathetic in comparison.

    • +1

same here, mine was scheduled for next month but the status has just changed to "we are committed to finishing the NBN by the end of 2020" :(

  • +3

Any good NBN 50 plans around at $60 mark?

    • Maybe check out Belong or one of the Vocus resellers if you are game.

      • Hey man how do I know if an nbn provider has their own equipment at my local exchange? Which part of the network do vocus handle? If I go with ABB do I not need to worry about Vocus? I'm still trying to get my head around this and understand the infrastructure. TIA!

        • +2

Usually it'll be, Premium or large providers have their own equipment, all others will be resellers.

ABB, Superloop, FutureBroadband, Telstra, TPG, Optus, Vodafone, Launtel(to an extent, you can check their website), etc. Have their own equipment.

Everyone else will likely be a reseller.

          • @Cousin IT: Launtel literally resell Tasmanet who have their own backbone.

            • @Clear: Hence the brackets with "to an extent. They have hardware at some POI's on the mainland and resell VOCUS on others.

              • @Cousin IT: It's not their own hardware.

                • @Clear: Hey clear where does one find this info? I’m wondering which providers have hardware at my poi so I can consider moving to them. Will stay away from vocus as I consistently hear poor things about them.

                  • @hashtagbargain: The reason I know is that I previously worked for a large mutlinational ISP and still have a lot of involvement in that area.

Otherwise it can be hard to find out without knowing someone usually. Can't go wrong with Aussie Broadband though. In my experience they always have enough bandwidth.

                    • @Clear: Yeah I’m with Abb right now but feels a bit exxy so I’m scouting alternatives but I can’t get info on who has equipment in my local poi (Kew)

    • yep, if you bundle your mobile
      https://www.letsbemates.com.au/nbn/

    • Internode has nbn50 at $59 for first 6 months.

      https://www.internode.on.net/nbn-plans/

      • +2

Have read that Internode are pretty woeful

        • -1

          Nup. Fantastic customer service.

          • @ThithLord: a quick look through Whirlpool tells me otherwise

            • @mreddie: Fair enough - I've been with them for 10 or so years, quite pleased with the customer service aspect. Just moved to NBN this week so I'll see how that goes!

        • +6

Internode is definitely a shell of its former glory.

          • +6

@Munki: Aussie Broadband now is what Internode used to be 15 years ago.

Now that iiNet own Internode, they are just an outlet for their junk.
You used to be able to call up Internode and speak to a professional who knew exactly what they were talking about… no accents, no delays, no scripts. I don't care if ISP's have international call centres, but don't fill them full of people who have no idea what they reading off of the scripts.

            • +5

@UFO: You mean TPG. TPG own AAPT, PIPE Networks, Chariot, Soul, IntraPower, iiNet, Internode, RuralNet, Country NetLink, Origin Internet, Octa4, TransACT, Grapevine, Westnet, Netspace, and Adam Internet.

              • @Cousin IT: Yep, that :).

              • @Cousin IT: Oh jesus
                You just gave me nightmares

                • @iamhurtin: You with one of them?

                  • +1

                    @Cousin IT: No
I worked at tpg and had to deal those companies customers, which meant going through old folders and old tickets and logs and comb through countless servers, switches and routers.

People weren't all that friendly when you told them the company they're with doesn't exist anymore.

                    And intra power?

                    Still need therapy heh

        • +1

They went to complete garbage after TPG bought them.

          They are just TPG rebraded

    • +4

Unfortunately for that budget you'll only find specials, where you'll usually have to jump ship every 6 months or maybe even less, and hope that an RSP has a special to take up at that time. At the moment the only plan at that price point "without contracts or bundles" is Tangerine's XL Speed Boost plan (50/20) which is $59.90pm for the first six months. You can also take advantage of their referral system, for $25 off the first month, but you'll need to enable your private messaging. I've been using them for over a month because of the price and have not had any issues. Been good for the price. They're a VOCUS reseller.

If you don't like them, you'll either have to take up a 6 month contract with Internode (TPG) at $59.99pm or Bundle a mobile with Mate so that you can get the Internet for $59pm (minimum mobile plan is $20) That would be a minimum total of $79pm. In my opinion bundling would defeat the purpose unless you can actually make use of the mobile.

If you need to stick to the $60 budget, you might want to look into the Belong Starter plan (effectively a 30/20 plan), which is $55pm for a 12 month contract (includes a modem and a SIM card with $80 credit) and there's also a referral system or $60pm without a contract.

Else you'll be looking at 25/5 plans.

      Hope it helps.

      • There's a belong referral system o.O?

        • Yep. You can find it here or PM.

    • Flip NBN might still be worth a look at though personally I went with TPG contract right after the Telecube fiasco.

I got nightmares of going with smaller ISP's now.

They are idiots, been WFH and I need the speed for 100/40 with TPG FTTB. If I was on NBN I'd be paying MORE and be slower

      • +1

@Turd - I've been on TPG FTTB since 2014, the NBN only JUST came to my building 3 months ago and its $40 a month more expensive for the equivalent speeds. Absolute joke

        • +1

          100%
We've had TPG FTTB before NBN came in.
I recently updated my modem and now getting 91/32 speeds constantly. Before I got 85/34 (with stock Hwawei modem - Bridged).

Oh btw did you know our prices will increase come next year, Broadband tax $7.10 extra a month.

Too bad though TPG FTTB doesnt allow for higher speeds due to VDSL2 17a profile, if they update to 30a or 30b we may be able to get faster, but I dont see them doing this.

    • +9

The ACCC has been nothing short of useless. Telstra are continuing to incessantly advertise stuff like Xbox and Surface devicds whilst you can't call up their contact centre as an existing customer and resolve billing issues.

      • +3

I think we might need a new seperate regulator for the Telecommunication industry after reading that and the opposition to the TPG /VHA merger. I don't think they understand technology very well.

        • +1

I suspect any "Regulator" you get into the space might struggle with the techologies - their pure skill with the thing they are regulating is not the basis on which they hire public servants.

    • +1

100 lol, I can't even get 50, FTTN blows goats. Im on 30ish.

    • +4

ACCC had a price and murdoch paid

    • +5

The ACCC is the reason we have the current mess with all the POIs around the country, as opposed to the original plan for a few larger interconnects.
The last thing anyone should do is listen to the ACCC in regards to the NBN, they've caused enough damage.

    • +1

Meanwhile NZ has had a huge uptake in gigbit plans

      what numbsculls

      • New Zealand even has 4 gigabit plans… I hate it here

  • +2

Meanwhile, I'm here struggling to maintain over 20Mb/s on fttn…

  • +3

    1000/50 - $149 a month
why is there a big difference between the download and upload speed

    • different people have different requirements.

      • +5

no, im saying in canada or NZ the upload is usually 1/5 the speed of DL so like 1000/200 which is more like it

      • +12

Wrong. Because NBN Co don't believe that upload is necessary to consumers and therefore (profanity) anyone who wants an even up/down or even a connection favouring the up.

        • +6

They trying to find a way to scam businesses into higher cost plans

    • +22

HFC can't handle both higher upload and download speeds, so they cap the upload. FTTP is limited so that people don't realise that the current version of the nbn (Malcolm Turnbull's MTM) is garbage

    • -1

It is a simple way for RSPs to limit P2P traffic while offering unlimited data plans.

    • CVC :(

  • +1

YESSSSSS! Guess I'm going to order a UDM now!

    • What's a UDM?

      • +1

Unifi dream machine. Might need to get the UDM pro….🤔

        • +6

Stuff the UDM. Get a proper setup and don't integrate everything into one.

          • +1

@Tacooo: Yeah a "proper setup" with dedicate devices would be more flexible in the long run. But sticking with the unifi range would be $300 more expensive… I used to have a separate firewall and wireless setup, but the UDM just made more sense for me when upgrading. Plus the UDM has been on sale for sub $500. I would rather put that $300 towards a second access point for increased range.

            USG firewall $199
            Unifi 4 port switch $82
            NanoHD Wireless access point $289
Cloud key gen 2 management $339
            Total $909

            Vs

            UDM $589

            • @garethds: You just need this:
              - a PC with AES-NI capability to run OPNSense, pFSense
^ this will be your firewall + router
              - UniFi 4-port switch
              - NanoHD WAP
              - run the Unifi controller on a Raspberry PI or run the Unifi controller in the cloud

it's still more satisfying to have that running,
than a UDM (where you need to log in to your UDM through Ubiquiti,
giving them access to your home's network traffic )

    • +1

ubiquiti routing/security is garbage, switching and WLAN are good.

  • +11

Looks like my decision to pay $12k to upgrade my FTTN to FTTP last year is now looking good :D I'm going to sign up to the gig plan at the end of the month

    • You paid 12 grand???

      • +9

        That's on the cheap end!

      • yes

      • +4

It's the same price as a set of spark plugs for his Ferrari, nbd ;)

    • +5

Should have used that money for a class action against the government.

  • +7

Do we have to wait till Friday to check if we are in the 7% of HFC or is there somewhere we can check ?

    • also interested to know!

  • Any deals on Ubiquiti UDM's?

  • -3

HFC area, don't seem to be getting anything above 100/40 showing up.

    • +7

      (in 3 days)

  • +5

Best news all year. FTTP gang out here 😤😤😤

  • I need this.

When are the NBN HFC plans being upgraded?

  • +23

What is with the speeds over the ditch..in NZ we get 1000/200 for $80-90 .

    • +9

      We call it the NBN…

    • +20

We keep voting for corrupt morons

      • So, corrupt morons are also corrupting the population then ?

    • I'm still only getting 50% of my FibreMax speed with Spark, even during non peak times. So being in NZD with Fibre isn't all that it's cracked up to be for for $139 NZD per month. What plan are you on that you getting it so cheap in NZ with those speeds. Normally the connection and disconnection fees are high when they are around the $80-90 mark and you are on a contract.
