        Thinking of getting a new laptop for my wife. Main uses would be streaming Netflix etc. and a bit of light gaming (i.e. the Sims 4).

        Any idea if the difference between the Vega 6 in the 4500U and the Vega 8 in the 4800U would be noticeable? Or if either of them would even be sufficient?

          Vega 8 is faster but both are terrible for gaming, The Sims or League of Legends is about the limit.

            @Merlict: That's pretty subjective. Not everyone wants to run AAA titles at ultra settings. If you want to look at gaming performance of the 4000 series APU, look up the Tech Epiphany channel on YouTube. He has plenty of comparisons with the new 4000 series processor. Vega is a lot faster than any Intel Graphics.

          I'm able to run sims4 on the i5-8265 at reasonable pace.

          I would think either AMD solution would be faster but the Vega 8 is more future proof or if she wants better graphics settings. GTA5 perhaps?

            @Joxer: Thanks. Not too fussed about graphics settings as long as it's reasonable, but the Sims seems to need more grunt than you'd expect, especially with the newer expansions.

            Might go for discrete graphics just to be safe.

    Could someone tell me how good this ideaPad compare to T (business?), E, C (yoga) categories in term of build quality, performance etc?

    I am looking one for programming, running virtualbox, light photo editing.

      Thinkpads are generally more business focussed. So you get better build quality, slightly more premium components and usually better durability and longevity compared to ideapads

      They're better but more expensive, only you can decide if the features and build quality are worth it.

      Depending on usage scenarios. Look up Tech Epiphany on YouTube he has plenty of 4000 series comparison. Mainly gaming but there are videos where he runs all the benchmark tests.
      Just ask yourself if you have productivity applications which will use the 8 cores and 16 threads of the 4800u.

        Legend, I'm thinking 4800u is probably worth it, igpu is substationally higher. On paper its 1.79 vs 1.15 TFLOps (what that amounts to in real world performance who knows though).

    Don't these Ryzens get a significant improvement from dual channel memory? I assume this is 8GB x 2 because 16GB x 1 would be silly wouldn't it? Bad enough that it's soldered.

      Smaller NVME storage drives tend to have slightly slower read/write specs.
      In this instance I can't be sure unless someone has tested it.

        Just read the reviews again, not only you will be able to replace the ssd, there is even an empty second m.2 slot. Although it is in the unusual 2242 length.

    I ordered one of these on 4th June, with an advertised delivery time of 10-15 business days. Delivery has now blown out to 21st July.

      They must be struggling to meet demand. What's being advertised is "shipping time" instead of delivery time, meaning when the item is "shipped", it has been dispatched by the warehouse. The delivery might then have some delays due to covid. I ordered one with the Ryzen 7 4700U on 11th June with the same advertised 10-15 days shipping time. The order status now says "expected to ship" 30th June, and "expected to arrive" 15th July (probably going to be delayed further).

      20% discount at the moment. Note though there is 6-8 week product delay. I purchased today for $1279 (+1tb hdd $99, and battery 2 yr warranty $39)
      They polled a $1, ….. and then took the funds. But in doing so they kind of breach their own terms of service, as its only suppose to take the funds when they have shipped the product; but obviously this purchase is for EOFY. The invoice is apparently generated at shipping, this allows them to reneg, if parts are unavailable. So buy, only if your don't need the gear straight away.
      Once you buy, you receive a 10% coupon code through your email for your next purchase.
