Much longer than usual period this time around. Yes, this is also out of the usual cycle.

I think we can blame COVID-19 for that. ;)

Their way to try and encourage us to get out and support local businesses, especially those who were unable to fully open (or even open at all) during lockdown.

Worth also pointing out that the usual spend requirement is $20 for a $10 credit

    • +16

      WHO do we blame?

        • +18

There's a reason were not like the usa right now

          • +17

@justtoreply: And also a reason why Taiwan is in a much better place than other countries in the world.

        • +2

          ignorance is blissful?

        • +5

I think we should start "AMEX CUSTOMERS MATTER" Riots

    • Thanks OP.

Much better than the other promotions where you only get double membership rewards points.

  • +8

are we expecting $2 credit for $5 spending , up to 20 times down the road

    • +20

Yes, maybe Amex is taking their promotion too literally by encouraging us to 'shop small'

  • +7

Redeem $5 on a $10 spend isn't that good. Will have to make payments using several cards to pay for anything reasonable. And some businesses will not accept split payments.

    • +15

I think it's good for lunches though, get $10 lunches for 5$

      • +8

$10 lunch places don't generally accept AMEX in Sydney

        • Not just in Sydney, in many small eateries

        • +2

Do you guys have Hakataya Ramen down there?

I know from previous AMEX Shop Smalls, they accept AMEX.

          • +2

@montorola: No, but we have Ippudo and Gogyo and a whole bunch of other decent ones (Ippudo and Gogyo take Amex)

          • @montorola: For Sydneysiders wanting ramen, Ichi-Ban Boshi in the city are participating and don't surcharge for Amex! Kinokuniya next door are also participating (however sadly not Muji)

        • +8

lol, please, if you can't find lunch for $10-12 in sydney that accept AMEX you may as well cancel your ozbargain membership

    • +4

Better than $0 for xx spend

    • +1

      Multiple separate transactions work

      • Split billing at restaurants!

  • +11

Not much point getting Opal top-ups this time around!

    • Yes, I haven't used my Opal card since lockdown while I still have $100+ credit left from last Shop Small

  • +1

I wonder if it will be targeted again or open to everyone?

    • +1

Maybe targeted. Only got the offer for main card holder. None of my subsidiary cards got it.

      • I'm a sub card holder, and I've gotten it on my plat charge, and plat reserve cards, but not my explorer.

  • +7

Looks like be buying alot of toothpaste

$10 is pretty much a joke

    • +20

Just have one with no annual fee and use it when they have offers/promotions.
      That’s what I do.

      • +8

The best bang for buck is to do this plus also get supplementary cards. The shop small and most other offers can be saved separately to their cards. My wife and 3 kids all have one. Win win.

        • How does one apply for this? I have a Platinum charge and the ‘supplementary’ card my fiancée has does not allow her to have her own bonuses

          • @tommypickles: You won’t see them in the main account, but if she has her own account with the supplementary card she should see the offers there.

          • @tommypickles: Might be because it's a charge card. I don't get any offers on my charge card but I do on my QANTAS Discovery card, and so does my wife (in her own login).

          • +1

@tommypickles: Just make sure she has her own Amex account on their website. She can then log in and add this offer and others to her supplementary card. When she 'shops small' the bonus will be applied to the primary card holder's account.

I have the Amex Platinum charge card with multiple supplementary cards and each card is able to add amex offers.

        • +1

I originally got the AMEX Essentials card to supplement my Citibank VISA, so I could use it for the AMEX offers and the small number of stores that accept it without fees… turns out the AMEX is my main card now and I spend twice as much on AMEX as I do on Citibank, all while accumulating points faster.

      • -1

lol I reckons Qantas express Amex, no fees, earn ff points and get all the offers…

well I guess less people taking up offers the better

amex.is bad everyone cut up their Amex now

        nowwwwwww

      • Let's call it 'Essential'.

    • +4

Your loss. Most of us probably just use it for statement credit deals (or there is one amex card with no annual fee which gives you phone screen replacement insurance iirc). This is not an everyday card, sure

    • +11

Apart from JB Hi-Fi, most major retailers don't surcharge for Amex any more. In regards to acceptance reluctance, that's why you also have a Visa/Mastercard as a backup.

    • Every year it's accepted are more locations.

    • +7

Don’t know when you last tried it, but their online platform is one of the best in the business. Very happy with it.

      • Clean, simple, quick to load, easy to use.

    • best customer support ever. no bs at all. i received my replacement credit card within 4 days despite the last long weekend.

  • +1

    Thanks op

  • thanks OP

  • +3

arhhh 10, less motivation to run around to top up myki on multi cards, but better for meals, no need to team up.

    • +3

Not many people would need to top up Myki as most people work from home

      • +5

I've given this some thought - work from home isn't forever! When your bosses start asking you to come into the office once PT is safe, whether that be in July, October, or January next year, we will need that credit.

    • +1

      Great for local cafe lunches

  • thanks OP, reminder set.

  • Never had a amex card. Can someone please advise which card has the lowest annual fees and decent benefits? Does this specific offer applicable on zero annual fee credit card?

    • Yeah I'd like to know this too. I used to have an Amex that came with my Commbank Platinum CC (along with a Mastercard) but that all finished a while ago. I'm guessing that was a "different kind" of Amex anyway?

    • It has applied to my previous zero fee cards so gonna assume the same. But note it does take time for offers to activate on your card, solid one or two months so you are too late for this offer.

    • +8

I have the The American Express Essential® Credit Card, no annual fee + have saved plenty of money over the years with the Amex offers. A great card with excellent service from Amex.

Also has insurance cover for smartphone screen repairs up to $500 each year when you pay for your phone outright or monthly bill with your card.

    • I have an American Express Qantas Discovery card, which has no annual fees, and can accrue QFF. It has the Shop Small offer.

    • -1

You’re online already so halfway there to just going to the American Express and reading.

    • +1

Essential card is free and has some good benefits. I have it for smartphone screen insurance. If you pay for your phone with AmEx and your screen breaks you can get it repaired at any phone fix shop and file a claim with AmEx insurance for up to $500 money back. My experience with insurance claims with AmEx has been great. They don't give customers any trouble. Requirement for this card if I remember correctly is $30k p.a.

The second card I have is the Platinum Edge card. Annual fee is $195 and around $60k p.a income requirement. With the card you receive a $200 travel credit every year, which you can sell to people for $150. Now you have $45 left to recover every year. You can easily get the $45 back. Put all the shopping you do on your American Express (including grocery as you get 3 points per $ spent at coles and woolies) and you'll have easily accumulated enough points to get that $45 back. Plus all the offers they give every now and then add up to $50-100 saved every year anyways, like their spend $10 get $5 credit at Woolworths.

Now, if you're really smart and have a family that is financially responsible you can get extra cards as the primary card holder for your family. Get a card for everyone that is eligible and put all your family spending on the card. Only do this if you have responsible family members though. My family runs everything through our American Express cards and AmEx actually ends up paying us $600-800 every year.
It has many more benefits which you can find on the AmEx website such as complimentary travel insurance, free lost/stolen insurance on products, free 12 months extended warranty on products for up to $10,000.

I feel like I sound like a shill whenever AmEx comes up in discussion but honestly my AmEx experience has been phenomenal and I pitch it to everyone I meet. Everyone that is financially responsible and has the income requirements to own AmEx should own one because it's silly not to. Even if it's just the free one, the phone screen insurance is ridiculously good value for a card with no fees. Just remember to pay your bill on time and you pay no interest :)

Sorry buddy, but the millenials don't like credit cards, they don't like the idea of having "debt".
Up to 55 interest days to pay off the statement balance

But Buy Now Pay Later? Oh that's not a credit card, so it's okay. /s

        P.s. I hold a Plat Edge card too :)
Amex Essentials offers a high points earn rate for a free card, rivalling most mid-tier non-amex cards.

I thought Plat Edge min p.a. was 35k+?
Edit: "I have an annual income of $50,000 or more"
        It's 50K+ P.A

  • -8

Theoretically free $50 if you have a no fee card. Notice no servo's just small desperate merchants. Been a merchant for over 40 years. Nearly a million card transactons, nil chargebacks. One ever visa dispute, quickly resolved. Done around 300 Amex transactions, 200 or so clients caused one form of hassle usually because their card bounced we got screamed at and spat at, even punched and false police claims lodged. Kept all paperwork, and can technically process all 3 cards at 1.9%. There are just too many reasons so many merchants do not accept it although desperation breaks so many rules.
Amex has been sending me free gold cards and when I never used them tried to extort $285 from me. No free lunch here.

  • +1

AMEX Shop Small's super early this year 2020.

    • +4

      Did you read the OP?

      • +9

It's buried pretty deep in the OP

        Like the first line……

  • -2

    apologies…only skimmed read it!

    • +3

btw its for amex only, not for visa/mc or cash

  • +1

Not sure if its worth topping up Myki given the current environment?. Gonna buy a few Sudafed for the winter months otherwise.

    • Yeah, due to work from home arrangements my myki balance is pretty high! Does myki credit expire?

      • +1

No, but the card does (the credit will be transferred to the new card)

  • +1

Potentially targeted like the last small shop. No mention of any cap.

    • For your offer or this one posted? This one has a cap of $50 cash back and $5 per store.

  • +1

Looking at the map (and remembering how much I hate the map), it looks like a lot less stores are participating this year. At least in my area.

    • Same.

Noticed that NGV is no longer listed.

MUJI (Chadstone only) and Haighs are new.

      • Realized that Muji and Haighs don’t have the Shop Small logo highlighted so are not participating.

    • +2

Yeah that map is fked. You'd think with all the merchant fees Amex make they could invest in some decent UX.

Seems like Amcal isn't in this year.

      • +1

Well even though it was on there I got credit for Amcal. Nice.

  • I imagine with the kinda fees AMEX might be charging merchants I'd say there are even fewer qualifying businesses that take it, and I was having enough trouble making use of the regular Shop Small offers in previous years.

  • nicee

  • -4

Is this targeted? Don't see it on either of my Essential card.

    • +4

Yet another one who didn’t read the OP

      • +7

lol.. got excited and then disappointed when I didn't see it on my cards. I surrender by OZBian badge for a day :(

  • -8

This will be useless to me as I can't cross over to QLD with the border still closed. Come on hurry up and open up the borders.

  • Too bad my local Japanese restaurant won't be open when this comes around.

    • You have until the end of August to use this offer; hopefully they open very soon :) (Unless like Crescent Ramen in Sydney, they’re now permanently closed)

    • +2

Number of times people didn't read the OP: 3 (yes that includes you; had you read it, you wouldn't have written what you just wrote)

    • +2

If only you spent the time contacting customer service and typing all that on reading OP's post…

  • Notice a few local places that I don't think were on Shop Small previously are now on it, I'm definitely likely to shop at all of them soon so seems like a great offer this time round. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Will there be a manual link to add this offer? Amex screw up my offer page 8 months ago, i never receive any offerS in my homepage anymore :(

    • Have you tried to login through the Amex app?

      • +1

Yes, still nothing. and talking to customer service team several times , they took a photo, said will get back to me and never get back. The customer service use to be great but now is just waste of time.

        • +1

Looks like it’s happening to most of my cards right now

          • -1

            @Prince K: On 7 of my 8 cards.

            • @gotcha: I have 5x essential and 5x Qantas discovery cards. I have 0 offers on all my Qantas discovery. Essential is working fine, got shop small on 4 out of 5. It’s frustrating. It’s been happening for so long, mostly like 8 months too cause it shows last time it was used was shop small in November last year

              • @Prince K: That sucks. This is the first time one of my Plat Reserve cards missing an offer though.
