If they're all listed separately on the map, then you'll get separate credits for each

  • +2

Just got a $5 credit for using GoGet, statement says its Shop Small - very unexpected, as I don't see it on the map or online list. But not unwelcome

  • Just found out a local Asian groceries is in Amex Shopsmall map. Love buying fruit from them every weekend. Shame that they not really promote using Amex - or having SS promo sign.

    • +2

If u share the shop name maybe it will help

  • Edgecliff Railway Bookstall will do Opal top ups, and will allow you to split a $20 top-up over two cards (but with a 15c fee per card).

I am also finding it hard to make the spend - there is not much to spend money on at the moment! I was thinking of buying some scratchie tickets from eligible newsagents at the end - you only need to make 50c back to every dollar you spend to be ahead (after the Amex statement credit). What are other people spending their small shop credits on?

    • The eateries inside Broadway Sydney during my work lunch break

  • +2

In times of stage 4 lockdown, I just wanna share the small shops that are in my 5km area and hopefully can be useful to others who live nearby.

In Vic (Cranbourne East/North/west/Lynbrook/Lyndhurst/ - These places are part of small shop and have no surcharge fees:

    1. Brian Meats butcher (in Marriot Waters shopping centre)
    2. Lynbrook Fruit market (Lynbrook shopping centre)
    3. Sushi Sushi (Cranbourne Park shopping centre)
    4. Legend Asian food (Cranbourne Park shopping centre)
    5. Bargain Depot (Cranbourne Home Maker centre)
    6. Bakers delight (Cranbourne Park shopping centre)

Finally managed to complete 100th shop today. It's been hell of a ride so far.

Got 40 leftover but don't think I will be able to do even half of it.

    Anyways thanks Amex!

    • At 125 used, 15 to go. Should manage to complete by end of the month.

      • If I may ask, apart from opal & local groceries/ restaurants is there anything else to spend on ? Like gift cards etc. ?

        • +1

Haven't done any opal top-ups. 14 cards - identified many grocery shops and am making 14 visits to each of them and spending as close to $10 on each visit. Also with breakfast with wife we order / pay separately at little cafes. Validity period was 75 days so we have just taken it very steadily.

        • I also heavily used for groceries and then restaurants like Oporto, Hungry Jacks and local Charcoal Chicken.

Try newsagencies as they some of them sell Gift Cards.

  • +2

These are some of the shops I have visited

    Grocery - Tang Food Emporium

    Butcher - Peter Bouchier, Cannings

Fruit & Veg Shop - Tesoriero & Luca (No longer accepts Amex)

Bakery/Café - Lune, Millstone, Baker Bleu, Woodfrog, Phillipa's, Maker and Monger, The Pasta Shop, Etto, Stocked

  • Not sure if this has been posted - I got $5 back on my boozebud order…

  • Just confirmed that the Firestation news agent in KX will trigger the AmEx email. They are happy to split the payment over cards, and don’t charge a fee.

  • Anyone know of any charities that are taking Shop Small? Couldn't find any on the AmEx website after a quick look.

There's this thread but not sure if anything has changed since 2016:

Cancer Council generated SS rebate for me in June.

  • For anyone in St Albans, the Bottle O Main road east is not part of it - I think Amex have confused it with another place down the road. They don't even take Amex.

  • Iv had a manual credit adjustment after complaining and after a few days the Automatic credit came through also. Would that be considered 2 or 1 off the possible 10 rebates

    • In past years manual credits with a narrative to that effect have not counted in the total. What is the narrative on your credit?

I ordered 7 home delivered meals from Gourmeal for $49 and unexpectedly got a shop small credit (Melbourne based). Really enjoyed the meals too plus I expect it's keeping some chefs in work.

The deal and promo code is here (it might still be on): https://www.facebook.com/110707897259264/posts/1491588400808…

On another note, I found the Amex customer service and this promo (including email notifications) to be appalling this year. I have just followed up an email I received advising of $5 back and they are saying I cannot have it because I have hit the limit.

So emails are not coming out when they should and they are coming out when they shouldn't. Sounds like amateur hour to me. Who is running the show over there?

  • So, possibly a stupid question, but with purchases made close to the end of the promotion where the purchase is cleared/processed after the 31st August, will we still be able to receive the credit?

    • Yep, right up until the last minute of the promo.

  • Does anyone know if there will another shopsmall in Nov this year?

    • +1

No; too hard to tell what will happen, just like with the pandemic.

      • +3

Didn't use the card much this time. $10 spent is a bit too little and don't feel very good to ask people for split payments. Take away easily cost way over $20. Local Asian shops are expensive and no split payments.

Hope they will run their normal shopsmall in Nov, $20 spend is much better.

        • Happy to take it this time, but I agree that the $20 promotion is more effective.

          • +1

@DrRalph: Yes, $20 is better. but I smell it might be their new norm since they can spread these to 10 stores and same $50 rebate each card.

            • @shortgum: I did the split payment 4 times no one had any issues with it.

              • @treeman: I did split payments a few times. Got questioned if all three cards are mine once. Another time was refused saying their system can't do split payments. After that I stopped asking.

                • @apple0604: I pay on my phone…. Maybe that makes a difference.

I also ask politely do you mind if I make split payments?

                  • @treeman: Yes I did ask before I even pick the items to buy. She said she could try and I knew they could do split payment. But when I used 3 cards to pay for $35 she questioned me if they were all my cards.

Then at another shop time the reason for refusing was that she misunderstood split payment.

Do you use googlepay, samsung Pay or applepay? Easy to manage multiple cards? It is still split payment/multille transactions, right? Only difference would be they would think they are definitely your cards. Maybe it is time for me to set it up.

I'm hoping in vain that they'll have a version of the Vogue Fashion Night Out promo with spend $50 get back $20.

      • Well they didn't have Vivid Sydney this year…

  • Some online shops like vetsupply are also included

Those in VIC Melbourne and Yarra Valley areas might enjoy free delivery of some ‘little over $10’ gourmet goodies per order at https://www.yarravalleygourmetfoods.com.au/shop/. Bought my girlfriend's engagement ring using my Amex card… got $5 shop small rebate on that too! lol

    • +8

Didn’t you ask to split payment over 500 cards?

      • +6

it’s ozbargain, ring was probably $10

        • a hello kitty ring?

        • If so, I doubt engagement will be followed by marriage!

          • +2

@SydneySwan: No point in splitting the payment… my bro did to satisfy the Amex requirements for his bonus velocity points last year but I've already gotten my bonus points and my only other card is a Citibank Platinum which doesn't have many good things for me to redeem.

The ring wasn't $10 but it was 40% off ;-)

Checks ShopSmall, woohoo it’s on the list 👏
Checks statements, woohoo it’ll be my 10th 👏
Checks OzBargain, woohoo it ends tomorrow 👏
    10/10 🥳 woohoo!

    • +4

Gets to pub and then cashier says they no longer accept Amex.

      • -1

That is not a prob, just go to online chat and they will still give you the credit.

  • My local Metro Petrol station is on the list. Been filling half price petrol($10 each time) for the past 6 weeks lol

    • -1

"Valid up to 10 times, once per participating business."

      "lol"

  • +1

A newsagency wanted $3 surcharge for a $10 Opal up. Wth?!

    • +1

WTF! That's 30%. You should report to Amex.

      • Yep. Will report. The worst part is they already processed the Opal top up, so I couldn't walk away :(

  • +4

This is the first time in many years that we were not able to use this offer. Not even once. #mellockdown

    • -2

You weren't in lockdown when the promotion started in June … Lockdown started in mid-July

      • +5

I appreciate the timeline of the recent events in my hometown. My suburb was in lockdown by the end of June. We shop online since March, including groceries.

    • +7

same; not worth the risk for a few bucks. only claimed 25% of the offer

      I'm in Sydney btw

      • So you didn't go out much?

        Aren't shops relatively safe?

        • +4

no opal this time; have used minimal public transport cos of coronavirus.

have not eaten out or had takeaway since feb. Go out like once or twice a week max!

Don't want to catch coronavirus & less strain on health system/ doctors/ nurses. They have a tough job. It a little thing that I can do.

          • +1

@airpoe: That was my stance when working from home full time. We only went out once a week to do our grocery shopping though we did get take away from smaller institutions once or twice a week on our cheat days just to keep them going (some only opened on weekends and for short number of hours). Cooked at home a lot more.

Girlfriend even took 2 weeks off work without pay to take one for the team prior to JobKeeper being announced.

I really wish my workplace would keep with WFH arrangements for longer. It's plausible and with a cluster that keeps expanding, I think we're being too bullish with getting everyone back in the office.

Though, I guess it gave me the opportunity to use my Amex Shop Small 3 times in the past week - lol.

    • +3

I’m in VIC. Used 9 out of 10 for buying local takeaway. Supporting them too

    • You can still use it online

  • +1

I'm in Vic as well. i am happy to support my local cafes (takeway) and lunch is sorted

  • +10

It was nice waking up this morning and not having to carry a wallet filled with amex cards.

    • Hear, hear

Not all places accept pay pass, so even though they are all saved on my phone can't always use it

    • Safe feeling. Put them away for next time.

    • +1

My wife is so happy that this came to an end and ill spend more time at home looking after the bub and she gets some time to work during the day.

      • Lol. How many cards do you have?!

        • 11.

I had only 2 weeks to finish 110 transactions and successfully completed all of them.

          • +1

@SydOzber: How did you do 110?!

            • +1

@Fobsessive: It wasn't attractive in the beginning as I didn't want to top up a lot of opal as I'll not be using public transport for the foreseeable future.
Most of the transactions I made were at news agencies or tobacconist who sell any gift cards, local grocery stores and very few transactions on opal

              • @SydOzber: Hope you didn't buy anything you wouldn't normally have. Now you have a lot of giftcards to use. Lol. We gave up fairly early. Too time consuming. Besides we bought from grocery shops which we have never been to and will never go again.

                • +1

@apple0604: I was of the same opinion in the beginning.
The only reason I decided to take the effort to do all the transactions is because we are not certain if the Amex will run the Shop small November promo (spend $20 get $10).

Most of the grocery shopping is what I’ll be doing anyway but excess stocks means full pantry and loaded garage!

Gift cards are good value, when combined with Ozbargain deals.

                  • @SydOzber: Which gift cards were you able to purchase?

                  • @SydOzber: What sort of giftcards can you get? Never thought of getting giftcards. I find it hard to track them.

                    • +1

@apple0604: Options are limited in news agencies and not all of them are willing to sell using Amex

Amazon, Myer, JB to name a few

                      • @SydOzber: Thanks. There is no news agency near us participating in shop small and we couldn't be bothered too much to drive around. But did top up for gocard, only one nextra shop near us participating in shop small. But we rarely use public transport.

                    • +1

@apple0604: To track gift cards, I write the remaining balance on the card with a permanent marker.
And stick them in a zip lock bag on the fridge so everyone in the family has access to them.

But it does require me to remember to take them before going shopping!

                      • @JJlikes2eat: Yes it is a good idea to put them in a zip lock bag and stick on the fridge. Will do that. Thanks.

  • +2

40/40 done, barely made it. Got a lot of local food in the end after running out of Opal top up locations.

Newsagencies either accepted split payments or rejected outright.

One dumb small restaurant wanted a $30 minimum transaction, so they lost a potential repeat customer.

  • +2

Only managed to do three cards' worth out of my six cards.

    • +2

This year I manage to find lots of small shops that i would never walk in if not this.

My family managed to finish all 14 cards spend until yesterday.

Half of those for top up

      • +1

I work near Broadway Sydney, so quite a lot of them went around there; tried a few new places on Level 2 haha. Also ended up using it at Kinokuniya and Monsterthreads in The Galeries. Even used it when I did my tax return (thank you accountant!)

Didn't end up doing my usual Opal top-up chase as I still have over $150 of credit and haven't caught public transport in months.

        • +1

I used all 14 cards for opal top up 2 years ago to use throughout the year.

if you don't need to use just return the OPal for refund.

          • +1

@SnoozeAndLose: I've had my Opal card since 2014 and don't intend on returning it until it dies in 2023 though

  • +5

This Shop Small was a bust for me. With lockdown, dining out closed and work from home, I ended up claiming only one credit.

    • +4

Look on the bright side, you saved all that money instead of spending it.

I managed to do 40 shop small transactions, and an overwhelming majority was for lunches I wouldn't normally have.

      • +1

These initiatives by Amex help retailers stay afloat (in a small way). Hence why I think it'd be mad for Amex not to continue the program in November.

I say good on you for buying your lunch and supporting small biz :)

        • +3

I know my impact will be minute to these small businesses, but as a small business owner myself, every little bit helps during this period.

        • +1

It has to have benefits for Amex too.

  • Did anyone get a credit for Roseville Newsagency? They had the Shop small placard on their counter, but they are not on the Amex map and I have not received a credit.
Amex want me to wait 90 days. I'll have to return to get a photo of the placard.

yes got shop small credit for Roseville News
