About the cheapest I've seen an x570 board in months.

Not for me as I'm waiting for B550, but thought I'd put this out for those looking.

    Thanks.

I found these helpful as general information when I was looking into the X570 a couple of weeks ago:

The price for this X570 does seem very attractive. But if you are not in any hurry, it may pay to wait. Supply was terrible because of the pandemic and (apparently) they are only starting to get better now, and you will likely see more competitive pricing whether or not you go for a B550.

Also, I think your choice also depends on which CPU you are going to pair it with, and whether or not you will be overclocking. I don't know much about these beyond looking at tier lists, but thought I would mention this in case you end up with a board that doesn't do what you want.

I'm not sure how quickly you will be able to get a B550 after they "come out", you may want to keep that in mind and look into that, someone who knows more about the cycle for motherboard may also like to comment on this, too.

      Good luck!

  • X570 vs B550 board.
    Which one is better?

    • B550 isn't out yet. Wait a few weeks. ETA for release is 16/6/20 in the USA.

      • I really don't understand B550 . It's going to be shorter lived than even an intel chipset equipped motherboard .

        • Apparently B550 is gonna get a big VRM improvement and also PCIe Gen 4 for those looking to use those SSDs. I wouldn't really wait for it though unless you're looking to get the cheapest motherboard for a 3950X.

    • The X570 is the same generation and is supposed to be the enthusiast option. So the X570 will usually be better than B550. It comes down to how much you want to spend.

The tomahawk X570 from msi is hands down the best X570 motherboard right now in terms of price/performance. I expect it’s price to further fall a bit as demand is met.

      • Depends if you need thunderbolt or not.

        • It supports thunderbolt.

  • Was waiting for B550 or MSI X570 tomahawk to get in stock….this is tempting seems like a decent board.

EDIT: just realized no stock for a couple of weeks anyway 18/6 …pass! B550 will be out then and all the X570 boards will be stocked up like MSI topmahawk.

What's the point of waiting for b550 when x570 is better?

    • +1

Hopefully it'll drive the prices down

    • +1

it's supposed to be cheaper, lower power rating on the chipset which removes the need for the chipset fan

    • I would agree if this shipped right now but in a couple of weeks when they get stock there will be a a whole bunch of new B550 mobos and X570 mobos coming back into stock.

    • Much greater mATX selection, useful for those who prefer mATX. Also price should be cheaper (probably not initially though, due to stock shortages I expect.)

How does an X570 not have optical out?

    • Why do you need an optical connection these day? HDMI is good enough

      • As someone who uses a HDMI receiver but multi monitor and would like to be able to run multiple devices through my receiver to the main screen, but still have PC audio at the same time, optical or Coax are important, and oddly hard to find on current AMD boards (though the s/pdif header and a homemade coax adaptor help). Might not be for everyone, but it just doesn't always work.

Also for those who have amps/dacs/receivers that just use optical and not hdmi.

        • Tomahawk has optical. I got mine today and it's great. Has wifi and bluetooth too. The VRM thermals are also the lowest for it's price range. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD65w5RVmtY

        • Yeah I'd use one to my DAC, however this one has USB as well so just use that (although PC not near it with work from home).
Streaming to my Chromecast Audio over wifi sounds very good, as it has optical out into the DAC.

Hard to know if prices will drop that much given lack of stock etc, sure they would in a few months.
Pretty bad time building a pc, still need to organise a PSU and even fans are out of stock.

I just went with a B450m Mortar Max ($180). Usually go mid range as it's good bang of buck, although no JRGB only JRAINBOW so will scrap the idea of RGB altogether. Usually have to sacrifice something, but it's just a gimmick and expensive. Can u install the next gen (4) Ryzen chipsets on the MAX boards, or do they mean gen 3 work out of the box? I never end up upgrading but could always go upto a Ryzen 9 in the future.

          • +1

@G-rig: Yeah, the mortar is a good choice. The x570 tomahawk was about 420 including shipping, and I doubt I will use any of the additional features that the b450 mortar or b450 tomahawk doesn't already have (except for the wifi)

            • @GrimCheaper: True, and over double the price..
I just use those 15$ Volans usb wifi dongles, work pretty well (probably $25 now though). Saw a better quality one for $29 instead of $37 I may get. Combined bluetooth one or more but still not bt 5.0).

          • +1

@G-rig: Check out the CM MasterFan pack of fans. Comes with a controller than can be connected via USB to the motherboard, and I believe, controlled by MSI Mystic Light. This is the plan for my next build.

            • @SwarleyAUS: 4 pin by the sound of it.. cheers but bit over it ordered 2x silent wings 140mm

                • @SwarleyAUS: Thanks for that but was already a mindfk looking at RGB and fans too much so kind of over it lol. Already orders the Silent wings 3 and have to send back some Deepcool RF120 3 pack (seemed to be the best for the price ~$60 - was going to paid up with a deepcool AIO rgb but unnecessary as well).

                • @SwarleyAUS: I checked out that video anyway, looks like you need the additional RGB passthrough controller that connects to the motherboards USB header off you don't have jrainbow (another$45).
To much stuffing around, cables and cost, then deciding which scheme to leave it on lol. Rather have less choices.

Could always just connect the two ARGB fans that come with the fractal case along with a simple controller, wouldn't mind white or something. Can still connect strip lights to jrgb something for that effect otherwise.
                  Cheers

                  • @G-rig: Probably too late to be of use to you now but for anyone else, the 3in1 pack comes with the small controller which allows you to control the colour of the fans either via it or the Master+ software. No motherboard control though unless you have an ARGB header.

One the default rainbow mode: https://imgur.com/a/hGv0yy4

                    • @SwarleyAUS: Yeah kind of got the shits with it but probably should have keep the deepcool 3in1 fans (but sent them back). At least they were PMW.
It's highly annoying when a fan isn't PWM nor works with my mobo RGB control.

Anyway i've got my 2x 140mm Silent wings 3 inlet fans, probably just hook up the two Fractal ARGB ones that came with the case (1x top rear, 1x rear) and not worry about pwm for now.

Got this controller which hopefully does the trick for mobo control:

                      Cheers

    • Why do you need an optical connection these day?

      • +6

maybe they ahve an amp or preamp that uses optical? my father uses an amp for his home theater system that uses optical, so he ended up buying a sound card with optical. Just a thought….

      • I have an amp that uses optical. I can argue is more important than the tricolour 3.5mm jacks.

    • This is a low end X570. I mean who the hell still uses PS/2

      • +2

Ha, you're trolling right? Even the high end boards have ps2. They're for legacy peripherals that some gamers perfer to use. E.g. IBM Model M keyboards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWkvzycD5PE

        • This is a low end X570, there's nothing wrong with the statement.
PS/2 was supposed to have an advantage with N key roll over, but modern USB Gaming KBs also have this feature now.

          • @Ragnarok1983: x70s are a generally more premium than the b50 mother boards, so they are going to have more features such as niche peripheral connectors like ps2. And as mentioned in that video link, n key rollover is still limited with usb, since it's only simulated by adding additional keyboards in the device manager which is still limited to the amount of keys that can be pressed.

Centrecom selling Asrock x570 phantom gaming for $279. Not bad for local stock.

  • Silly design. Hot NVME drive directly under hot GPU.

    • Most boards have the NVME drive there. Heat isn't really an issue with NVME drives anyway. If you don't want it to be behind the GPU, then just use the slot further down.

      • +1

Heat is one of the biggest issues with NVME drives, especially 4.0. Why do u think it has a heat sink on it?

        • my nvme is under the GPU, just saying most x570 boards have it designed that way because it's on the CPU pcie lane and not on the chipset lane. Eitherway on my x570 Meg Ace, it comes with a very thick heat shield and thermal pads. In terms of GPU heat, haven't had any issues yet.

  • Can't handle 200A core current very well, similar VRM rating to my $150 MSI B450 Mortar Max: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d9_E3h8bLp-TXr-0zTJF…

This has similar spec for $256 + delivery: https://www.skycomp.com.au/asrock-x570-phantom-gaming-4-am4-…

The TUF was $260 for a bit the other day. Hard to justify though unless you're running a 3900x+
