  • Cheers, OP.

Was after something like this, but hadn't bothered doing much research.

    Did the work for me.

  • +3

Had a very quick look. Seems okay for a simple video editing program that doesn't have onerous system requirements. Basic exporting options, but enough for YouTube.

Hopefully it genuinely remains "free" and not just some trial-offer gimmick.

    • +2

planning to start uploading youtube videos, you reckon this one will fit the bill or do you recommend any other software? Tried a few, all have watermarks in the free versions.

      • +39

DaVinci Resolve is a spectacular free option. No watermark unless you start to use some of the fancier features, but nothing that should affect basic editing for YouTube. (A few things that jump to mind are lens correction, some special effects, 3D, HDR, etc)
It is heavy on requirements though, and definitely has a steep learning curve.
        Edit:

This. There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it, it becomes very fast and easy to do all sorts of things. The free version has almost everything you'd need even if you're a semi-professional, hard to believe that it's free.

        • +2

I used to exclusively use Premiere Pro but Davinci Resolve is a seriously powerful program. Having your animation within the same program is actually super handy rather than needing to open up Aftereffects or Blender. Davinci also lets you import your hotkey settings from a range of the big alternatives so you don't really need to relearn that much, but if you're stuck there is a guy called JayAreTV that has a stack of tutorials on YT. Only downside is Davinci is more resource hungry so you need a decent rig to run it properly but this is OzBargain so surely everyone has built their own rig with all the deals going around.

There's also Hitfilm Express, for VFX.

        • There's a thing when you go to download it that asks for a bunch of information. Yes, you could make it up, but I also copied the direct link here, hopefully that works? I'd try messing with the link but I'm not sure how it works. Anyway great tool, really hard on my pc personally but still great

          • @Jec: I think you need to use the original link so that they can email you a license key.

      • +5

I'm by no means an expert, I usually just cut videos for hacking reports, but I use shotcut. It's FOSS, which is the main reason I found it.

        https://shotcut.org/

      • Looks good, but I only had a very quick look at it. It's simple and isn't heavy on PC requirements.

VSDC is another free one that I've tried (and then upgraded). DaVinci (free) for more pro video editing.

        • ya VSDC is really good .. although wish it had a few more features

      • Blender is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software that has a video editor.

    • Win10 video editor also has basic features if it is enough. Da Vinci is better but has a learning curve as it is primarily for colour grading than video editing.

  • Thanks OP. Never thought of branching out to another software until now. Will try this out and compare with OpenShot. OpenShot is the free video editing software I have been using for a long time. It has done very much good for me, constant new updates. Did a quick search on youtube, and the Intro Video from ACDSee looks already better than OpenShot.

23 years ago when I was still using MS Dos 6.22 and Windows 95
ACDSee was one of the best image viewing software

Didn't even know this company still exist today… will try on their free software :)

    • +14

      Second this. Good ol days.

    • +3

Was just coming to say how amazing it was when my uncle suggested this program back in the day.

    • +11

Just checked the current ACDSee required disk space of 2GB
my first ACDSee was less than 1MB

      • +10

Irfanview is the new acdsee.. :)

        • Ah. That's the program I changed too
          Thanks
I'm enjoying this memory lane trip

        • +1

Na, FSViewer has a very similar layout to the old ACDsee.

    • Yep same here, good old days :D

    • Was just thinking about the same thing.

    • +3

Yes. It was definitely the best tool for viewing….ummm… all those GIF files I got from friends.

      • This. Many hours spent using ACDSee.

    • " MS Dos 6.22"

dosshell ! yay …boy did that improve things compared to

      dir\w\p etc

    • Ah the good ol day.

    • I've been using ACDSee v2.4 as my main image viewer for the last 22 years or so, still yet to find an alternative I prefer :)
      https://i.imgur.com/qWmjFDq.png

If anyone knows of an image viewer with all of these 'features' I'd be most interested to hear:
-Ability to right-click drag from anywhere on the image into windows explorer/desktop to copy/move or create shortcut to the displayed image
      -Mouse wheel scroll next/previous image
      -Space bar for next image

Later versions of ACDsee viewer became bloated with photo 'management 'features, and the 'acdsee free' they released some time back asn't too bad, but last I tried it it didn't do all 3 things listed above.

    • It was best for simple fast, full screen viewing with a single key to move onto the next picture.

    • Yes the good ol days…. missed using this software

    • came here to see this comment - aye aye

  • I use ACDSee as a image management program almost daily and love it.

  • +2

For those about to CROP, we salute you ….

  • The logo on it reminds me of Lubuntu Linux.

  • You beaut!

  • +3

You should check out Davinci Resolve as well. The free version has a lot of features, some which are not included in Acdsee V3.

    • +1

Thanks so much for introducing this mate. The Davinci Resolve 16 looks much more professional with a lot of functions it seems. I feel like ACDSee Video Studio 3 is more for non-professional quick editing. Both are good, for me right now, ACDSee Video Studio 3 is a good upgrade for me. I am yet to be that professional to make the full use of Davinci Resolve 16 yet, but I have it installed already just in case I want to go pro-er.

      • +1

I actually just use it for colour correction and some video stablisation. It's pretty easy to find LUT profiles online for your camera and being able to apply it on the fly to see the results is great.

        • +1

I just did a search on LUT profiles and wow they are/can be amazing with all the LUT profile selections online. Now I need to learn to be more pro with these.

        • Sadly I have to uninstall Davinci Resolve as it crashes with my bluetooth

  • This or Handbrake?

    • +1

Handbrake is useful but it isn't an editor.

  • anyone know where the link to download it?

    • have you entered your email address and checked your email?

  • FYI; not necessarily a bad thing but this has been free before…

This software is T.N.T, It's dynamite!

  • +10

I hope we see a post about Winamp, RealPlayer, Kazaa and Limewire soon.

    • +2

      Napster too?

      • +1

Oh yeah how could I forget Napster!?

        • I remember the day when you could just download mp3's on websites haha. Can't remember the names though.

          (Technically you still can)

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: Would you like you like to download or run linkin-park.mp3.exe?

          • @[Deactivated]: Before websites they use to be on BBS downloading at a screaming 5kb/s.

You've just set off the alarms at the Metallica headquarters

Poor old Lars tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

    • +2

      Realplayer is adware/spyware rubbish

      • Realplayer was one of the only ways to watch Asian stuff/drama back in the day.

        • +1

I remember it being ok for some streaming stuff. But then got really bloated.

          • @[Deactivated]: Oh it was absolutely full of ads and shit. They were one of the first programs to put in those sneaky options where they installed ads I think.

It was great when you could finally install the realplayer plugins for Windows Player Classic and be done with the program.

        • Yes, because they were all in .rm or .rmvb format.

    • JetAudio ?

    • +4

And still the best file management tool - Xtree Pro Gold

      :)

      I have the original 3.5" somewhere…

    • Feeling nostalgic now…

    • +1

I use Winamp every single day!

      • How many Llamas butts did you kick?

    • +1

Can you send me a link to download icq and mirc?

Just found a cool shareware website. It's called tucows or something like that.

      • Uh oh! Random.us.dal.net #warez

      • I think I still have the tshirt!

      • Nah, back in the old days I had to login to the White Sands Missile Range ftp site to download stuff.
My Dad was worried that I would get in trouble (yeah managed to guess the password for the anonymous account).

      • Majorgeeks.com

    • WINAMP with warez extensions!!

    • Skip RealPlayer, it was invasive crap. I was going to say add gnutella, but I just found out it's still kicking 20 years on.

  • +1

Ahhh ACDSee, I remember using this back in Windows 98 days when it had no proper image viewer..

    • +1

      I think I used version 2.43

  • Nobody's mentioned Spinrite yet. Absolute lifesaver.

It's still alive as well. Truly amazing.

  • why not just use davinci resolve?

    • +2

Resolve is ridiculously overkill for someone who just wants to put a clip or two on a timeline and do a little bit of editing. FU microsoft for taking away Movie Maker

  • -1

don't wanna give out email address any one got the Direct Download link?

    • +2

How have you been an OzBargain member since 2009 and not have one spam email account? How?

      • Has nothing to do with being on OzB and how long. Its very much second nature living in 21st century.

    • +2

      Use this ->

Great site to use for verifying email accounts when you want to trial/download and not give your actual email…

      https://temp-mail.org/en/

But you will still need a license from your email.

      • So leave that page open. You can receive email to the temp address. Grab the license and you're good to go

  • Trying out Video Studio 3 now. I cannot find any way to trim/split clips in Video Studio 3. Please dont tell me it does not let you trim or split clips.

    • +1

I only had a quick play with it earlier, but I believe once the video is on the timeline at the bottom, you can just drag to trim clips.

      • Thanks. Yes I figured it out. You trim with the green (start) / red (end) on top of the timeline.

  • Seems like the sort of minimalist video editor that I'd like to use, thanks OP.

I assume (based on the free price) that I will receive offers for upgrades to version 4.

  • +1

Now there's a product name I haven't heard in years! Although when I last used it it was just for images.

Will give this a look, cheers OP.

  • +1

The name brought back memories from 20 years ago… I had no idea this still exists.
