      https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_8t-review-2044.ph…

      Pros
Good-looking body, dual Gorilla Glass 5, splash-resistant coating
Large screen, bright and with excellent contrast
      Impressive battery life
MIUI 10 is familiar, MIUI 11 is on the way
      Good all-round camera
Dedicated microSD slot, 3.5mm jack, FM radio, IR blaster, NFC

      Cons
The performance is actually a downgrade since the Note 7
No LED notification light in Note 8T while Note 8 has one

      • The performance is actually a downgrade since the Note 7

How so? On paper it looks like it should be similar/better.

No LED notification light in Note 8T while Note 8 has one

That's a con?? 😂 Those things keep me awake!

        • +3

          Those things keep me awake!

You can customise it so certain apps don't trigger the notification light.

        • There's software optimisation issues, I'm not sure if it's fixed yet. It should be, especially when miui 12 rolls out.

    • +1

I have one being using it as a replacement for a Samsung note 8
i think its a great phone to be honest well worth the price.

    • i got my missus the 8T and myself the 8 Pro. Both are brilliant. spec wise really great for the price.

      • What is the difference with 8 pro? What about photo quality and shutter response?

        • +2

8 pro has a higher megapixel main camera, faster processor, and possibly slightly higher ram i think?
Photo quality is great on both but moreso on the pro- 64 megapixel

    • I got the 128GB from TobyDeals, great hardware, crappy software.

Bluetooth connectivity used to be good, lately it doesn't automatically connect without opening the BT settings, same with WiFI. In fact my phone couldn't connect to either of my 2.4Ghz/5Ghz WiFi suddenly for about a month, then it came back but it takes a lot longer now to connect.

I have been waiting on the promised Android 10 update for months now, with only delays in sight.

If I wanted to buy locally, I'd wait 10 days and get this Oppo A72 deal

    Got one, good phone

    • Which version of Android are you running?

      • Im on MiUI 11.0.4.0 (android 10 based)

        • Cheers, I was a bit concerned about the specs saying Android 9.

          • @Tiggrrrrr: Wont get android 11, however is on the list to get MIUI 12 which is a better skin on android, much cleaner and similar to IOS if thats your thing: https://piunikaweb.com/2020/07/29/xiaomi-miui-12-update-trac…

            • @paulcad44: Won't get 11? Cheers. I'm out then

              • @Tiggrrrrr: Yeah redmis normally only get 1 version of Android upgrade

But for a phone that's under $280 it's not bad. I've bought a mi note lite 10 - $430 , waiting for it to be delivered.

                • @paulcad44: Comparitively, $280 is terrible. Android 11 is expected for the Samsung Galaxy A20. I got one of those for around $160 including unlocking.
Add to that no 2 year local warranty on the Redmi.

              • @Tiggrrrrr: Why do you need the latest one? My phone is on 7 and no problems.

          • @Tiggrrrrr: It will get Android 10, as it is the Snapdragon 665 unlike previous models having Mediatek variants, but the update keeps getting delayed due to bugs.

It looks like we will be getting MiUi 12 without Android 10 first.

            • @Jimbuscus: I was querying about Android 11. I couldn't see the point of buying a phone that will be stuck on the current version (10), when there are other options that will have at least an update to the next version.

              • @Tiggrrrrr: It will most likely get Android 11, they just won't commit to it and it will be later

        • @JuryWheel
I have the EU Version from Toby Deals and I am on 11.0.9.0.

    • +1

What's the battery life like - realistically speaking?

      • amazing compared to anything by apple/google/samsung from what i have found

        • my pixel 3a xl would like a word, still not as good as this though

      • I play games on mine and a day usually takes me to 20% by night when I charge. With lighter use, I can get more out of it.

That said, I got this at $246 from Tobydeals end of last year so I would consider this a normal price for this phone..

      • +1

I get more than 24 hours on a charge from standard usage, the 18W Xiaomi charger it came with (With adapter), charges it within an hour.

      • +1

I've got one, really happy with it. I can go a whole day, forget to charge it, and last most of the second day before I have to start thinking about plugging it in. I've never run out of battery. Phone is about six months old and no signs of slowing down yet.

Biggest drawback is that it comes with the typical Xiaomi bloatware, but a quick search of the XDA android forums and you'll find guides on how to strip it all out (which I recommend).

        • Got a link?

            • @whapkaplit: Thanks
Ran it, not too sure what it did/what has changed but it hasnt broken it! Will wait to see if anything is different…
One more question….whenever i restart my phone (i have 2 sims) the "Find device" Cant activate Sim car 1/2 pops up. Any idea how to stop this from happening? Do you have the same thing?
Also, do you use gcam? Do you find its worthwhile? Any suggested version?

              • @JuryWheel: What it changed depends on you, it's a way to uninstall the Xiaomi apps that you'll never use and that can't be uninstalled by normal means. Just freeing up space on your phone.

Sorry, can't help with any of the other issues. Only use the one sim and don't know anything about gcam.

    A72 better buy

Bigger screen, 5.0 Bluetooth and more internal storage (128Gb vs 64Gb on the Xiaomi)

    • Assuming you mean the Oppo A72 (Optus locked) aka Oppo A52. It only has more storage if you buy the more expensive one.

Looks like this one has eMMC vs the Oppo's UFS 2.1.. Smaller battery as well.

And as above, you also get Gorilla Glass and splash resistant - quite a pro IMO.

  • +3

Dont buy Kogan, you'll get a webcam instead lol

  • +5

Rather buy an Oppo A52 locally with full 2 year warranty from $270

Both terrific phones, SD665 so GCam APKs for those who want better photography. A52 has monstrous battery life.

Flip a coin on specs really

    • I agree. The warranty already does it for me, but Oppo also has faster UFS 2.1 storage and slightly larger screen.

    • +3

Not everyone can get access to Good Guys Commercial

    • Does the Redmi come with warranty though?

But yeah specs are almost identical, not sure how the display on the Redmi stacks up against the Oppo though, as Oppo has their special LTPS display.

      • I'll probably not bother with Kogan warranty.

        • Ah, yeah if it's just Kogan warranty then definitely avoid.

At least the A72/A52 has full local manufacturers warranty.

    • Thanks will go for the a72 from auspost then.

    • +1

Unless I'm mistaken you should be able to still get this from catch.com for $216/$217, assuming you make a new zippay account and a new catch account and can get a student code. Even if you don't have new accounts it'll be less than $250.

  • +1

I was thinking of getting this because it has FM radio and IR blaster.

How bad has MIUI gotten with the ads in their native apps?
At one point, an update on my Note 4x didn't let me disable preinstalled apps the normal way.

    • +2

i get zero ads on mine (havent had to delete anything)

    • Yeah newest update no advertisements only a couple inside the maintenance apps that are pre installed and a few "reccomended games and apps nothing intrusive , however i havnt noticed any in the last couple months of using it.Capable of playing games like pubg fine, for the price this is an awesome phone.

    • +1

You can disable ads within the (3?) Apps.

Yeah, and I'm not even sure if the debloater works anymore either. Last I heard, it was broken, and Szaki's Reddit account got deleted, so Idk have he fixed it yet.

  • I have one, the interface has some imperfections probably because translated from Chinese, e.g there is no space between the radio button and the text just little UI issues, also in dark mode the text is also sometimes black so they haven't tested the software properly. Other than that great hw specs for the price

  • its great for the price, i bought it specifically for the IR blaster, cool party trick. the oppo a72 does look better tho

  • great specs for the price. excellent deal. I would probably buy if i needed a phone at the moment.

  • +1

    Thumbs up from me too…
Got the 128GB variant from Tobydeals a little while ago for about the same price as the Kogan above.
    Good value for your buck…

  • +1

Got one from Toby's two months ago for $240, happy with it so far. Only problem is lack of notification light - but I guess that's one less distraction for me. Running Xiaomi.EU ROM while waiting for the custom ROMs to iron out bugs (I think they're waiting for the Android 10 release because of missing blobs). Battery around 6+ hours SOT regular usage.

    • Does the EU rom work with NFC / Google pay?

      • Yep, I've even got mine rooted with Magisk and it still passes checks (for now, Google is going to ban it soon…)

  • I need a budget phone for my nephew.

Budget Android phone (this or A52/72) or Refurbished iPhone 7 from Kogan?

    • +1

This. iPhone 7 may only have a year or two left. This can last a few good years, and Xiaomi usually gives 3 years of security update. Not sure will that apply to this particular phone since it's a special edition, but the phone can be used even if Xiaomi stops supporting it. Unlike iPhone.

  • This seems like a pretty good phone with positive reviews, but I will wait for when there's a special on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 pro.

    • 8 pro is not Snapdragon and has no B28.

      • True, but it has the following…

Robust design with dual Gorilla Glass 5 panels.
        Bright LCD panel.
The brand new MediaTek Helio G90T is snappy and efficient at the same time.
        Outstanding battery life.
The main 64MP sensor is versatile and delivers excellent images at day and night.
The selfie camera is also pretty good.
        Great video recording quality overall.
Supports USB PD charging, comes with USB-C to USB-C cable and appropriate charger in the box.
