PIN4TECH

Looks like everyone is falling in love with AMD, so Intel does not get a lot of mention.

I'm fairly sure this is on par with the all time popular Ryzen 3600 when it comes to gaming performance

This CPU is worse than the Ryzen 5 3600 across the board (including gaming!) when paired with 2666 RAM. Why 2666? You need an expensive Intel Z-series board to surpass that speed. Intel Intel Intel.

    Source: Gamers Nexus' video.

    • Intel

    • +12

Well, Gotta support the underdog sometimes. You know what happens when one company gets too powerful in a duopoly… 😈

Maybe Intel needs a 'Raise the Game' promotion of their own. Bit weird that AMD buyers gets free bonuses but you rarely see any with Intel.

      • +5

Lol you seen their Avengers CPUs?

        • Yep just different box with a different name cpu.

        • Intel: avengers packaging

          AMD: Weird flex but ok

      • +7

Amd is still the under dog imo in terms of loyalty.

I feel heaps of people swear by intel and are not going to shift anytime soon

        • Every company has fanboys, but I should suggest that it's actually AMD that has a much more energized fanbase. The subreddit for AMD is larger than Intel + Nvidia combined, for example, and AMD has been engaging with said fanbase a lot more directly over the years. Whatever loyalties Intel may have, AMD has been substantially outselling them in the consumer space (as in, CPU part sales direct to home users) for over a year now.

I think most people don't care, they just buy good deals based on what people recommend to them, and right now most media outlets are recommending Ryzen CPUs for most market segments.

        • This was probably true a yea or two ago but I think AMD has more mindshare ATM in the DIY community.

It's a bit uncool to have Intel, and all your celebrity unlimited budget builds etc which seem to really reflect mindshare have 3900X or 3950X or threadrippers instead of Intel's. Even though Intel at the high end has slightly better gaming performance

      • AMD market share is something like 25%.

    • +7

pretty sure he dropped the 3600 in the description just to trigger everyone's alerts.

      • +1

well in that youtube video, with the test games, the average fps difference is marginally even with 2666mhz ram

        • +3

ram speed always makes a diff in games.
not much, but enough to care

          • -1

@Nilfunds: i guess it depends how many people game on 120Hz screens - vast majority are probably still 60Hz, also if it's only 5-10fps difference then you won't notice it

        • idk man ask the i5 7600 buyers how they feel now.

        • +5

So now you're trying to pull a reverse AMD vs Intel except Intel wins in nothing apart from potentially better emulation with their architecture lmao. There's only a $10 difference (order from Amazon), a price worth paying for overclocking support, a better upgrade path and the better performance across the board.

    • +9

3600 running my ram at 3600MT/s. Intel can only do 2666MT/s max . Piss of Intel with that BS.. they can go sell their trash to fanboys

      • +1

        B-but Intel are a "premium brand" !!11

    • +3

The fact they put afterpay in the title is predatory in my eyes.

  • 2666mhz? pft

  • +1

Isn't the 10400F better value, as it's cheaper? Who uses the integrated graphics?

    • +1

      +1

    • +9

People who needs desktops/workstation that aren't gaming?

I seriously considered crappier Intel performance for their integrated graphics as purchasing the cheapest crappiest graphics card I could find was +$50.

        • +2

          You are funny.

        • +10

This is the dumbest thing I've read this entire thread. I use a 3970X and I don't game on it…?

          • -4

@p1 ama: 3970X is not a gaming chip

            • -1

@Freestyle: That's exactly the point…He said if you don't game, you don't need more than 4 cores, which is fundamentally untrue.

        • I run a lot of SQL. i3 is going to run shithouse with that. It's also far less optimised for Ryzen but anyway.

        • I seriously hope that was intended as sarcasm. As more cores is better when you AREN'T gaming.

          • -1

@gromit: Even when you are he's these days are utilising more than 8 threads. Look at the Battlefield franchise or Assassins Creed.

        • +1

Gaming benefits on average up to 8 cores imo. The quad core analogy is outdated. Although 6 cores probably the sweet spot

      • +1

yep, my 8th gen i5 runs 4k at60 fps, that more than fine for office work which is mainly what i do, no extra card needed.

      • Just wait for the Ryzen 4000 APUs, up to 8 cores, and very decent graphics performance

        • Couldn't wait =/ order placed already. Ryzen 5 3600 coming at the end of the month. =/

  • Bit of a bummer 3600 doesn't include integrated graphics. Wanted to build a workstation/home server, forced to buy some crappy graphics card.

    • pretty sure can get one cheap if you don't mind used

    • +4

they've already announced the 4000 series APUs, which use this current Zen2 core + new vega GPU cores. Only available to OEMs for ~2 months though.

      • Where did you read 2 months? I've been waiting forever for those new APUs

  • +2

this AMD vs intel stuff is a bit like ford vs holden, people have certain needs, they vary and people buy what works best for them and value for money at the time,

people doing office work don’t play with over clocking, and don’t buy extra graphics, etc. most people just buy a PC and use it for work.

    • +3

A cheap dual core system is good enough for outlook, word and office work. The point is that Intel still thinks they are on-top and can artificially hamper their products with only special K series getting overclocking and lower ram support for 80% of their products

    • +1

Ironically your analogy is spot on because there's only one clear winner - Ford. Holden is dead. AMD is the winner in 2020, and if things go really south for Intel, they might eventually find themselves in the same position as Holden.

  • +7

For anyone interested, I just completed a build with the 10400, in a mini itx system. I initially had a 3600 but the mobo had a faulty wifi card so as i was already having to rebuild i decided to try intel.

    3600
    3200mhz ram
    5700xt

    vs

    10400
    2666mhz ram (3200mhz set to 2666mhz)
    5700xt

I get a small percentage higher in 3dmark tests with intel, about 5-10 fps more in the witcher. Temps are about 15-20 degrees lower than using the 3600 in an sg13 case when idle/web browsing low use.

I think it's a good price for this chip!

*edited to clarify the temps are much lower when idle/light use

    • +3

Since you're downclocking your RAM you could probably tighten the timings at 2666 Mhz to get improved performance. Lots of guides out there and you only really need to tighten a handful to get some benefit.

      • Good thinking, didn't even cross my mind :)

    • Temps are 15-20c lower because AMD's boost algorithm increases idle voltage. It shouldn't be of any meaning to you. I'm surprised you got better performance on Intel though, since all benchmarks point to the Ryzen 5 3600 winning. Did you enable XMP on the 3600 system? (I know it's really simple, but anyone can forget)

      • +1

Yeah right now with just the Intel extreme tuning utility it's recording cpu temp at 37-40 degress while core frequency is 4-4.2ghz. Package TDP 9-10w. Temp is super important for me because its a mini itx case and also QLD weather once it gets hot will cook even more haha

I was suprised too! This was me being lazy/cheap and using stock coolers for both the AMD and intel as well.

The 3600 sat around 55-60 degrees and 3.9-4ghz. Ram was run at 3200mhz using XMP.

        • 3.9-4GHz at such low temps? That's very strange.

    • +1

Ryzen idle has always been unimpressive, unfortunately no one seems to really care, their APUs are a great though in this regard.

      • No one cares about idle voltages because they don't matter. If the chip was killing itself with them it wouldn't be doing it. There are vast architectural differences between Intel and AMD.

        • +1

I care, I'm in the minority I know, but low power computing has always been fascinating to me.

It's not about degradation, just lower power and heat, they can do it with their APUs but for some reason the CPUs behave very differently during idle and low usage. I understand that the APUs are based on mobile so inherently have excellent idle/low usage power consumption, I just wished they could do the same with their CPUs.

          • @Hiphopopotamus: I have an all core OC on mine which changed the idle voltages, now they are stuck at 1.25V. But I've read an article from someone at AMD saying that there is the observer effect with certain software, meaning that the boost algorithm mistakes the software polling the chip for a workload. They said to use CPU-Z with no other software for monitoring, I've never tried that though.

            • @Void: You can observe Ryzen behaviour through task manager as well, watching YouTube/Twitch with my 2600 it sat around 3-3.5GHz, sometimes even boosting to 3.9GHz, with my 3200G it tapers out at 1.4GHz.

              • @Hiphopopotamus: Ryzen is weird, because while it may be reporting 3-3.5GHz that isn't the effective or "true" speed. HWiNFO64 does a good job of telling you. I wouldn't trust task manager. I'm in a Zoom call with 2GHz effective and core is at 10W. SOC is at 10W because I overclocked the infinity fabric.

                • @Void: I use hwinfo too, watching Twitch with a 3200G I'm seeing Core + SoC power at ~9-14W.

SoC is interesting, I remember with the 2600 as soon as you have overclocked ram it turned static, ~10W from memory, increasing a little with each jump in ram speed. The 3200G behaves differently, probably because it's linked to the iGPU, I've seen it as low as 4W (hitting around 45W when gaming).

                  • @Hiphopopotamus: Interesting. I wonder if disabling Uncore OC Mode would have an effect on this, I have it on auto right now which I assume is enabled since it's never gone below 10W. I won't bother though, because it will probably hurt my infinity fabric stability.

  • +1

IMO the i5 10400 is pretty awesome for a gaming rig:

    • Z490 boards can be had for around the $220 mark now and in general all have good power delivery and VRM

    • Unlocked power limits

    • Even with basic 3200 DDR4 kits it is faster than any Ryzen at gaming - gap will grow with new cards

    • Intel XMP is still better, can plonk in a 4000mhz kit with no worries and don't need to bother with FCLK

Having said that, this deal is better IMO:

    $369 + $180 for a 10600KF and Asrock Z490M-Pro4

    • Re. your 10600KF deal, note this from a recent Techspot article:

"As for boards you should avoid at all costs: the Asrock Z490 Phantom Gaming 4, Z490 Pro4, Z490M Pro4 and even the Z490 Steel Legend. We're hoping Asrock can fix the Steel Legend with a BIOS update but for now we've seen that board throttling the VRM well before time."

Asus Prime Z490M-P at $239 or MSI Z490 A-Pro at $269 get good marks from Techspot but your bundle is going to cost $610 rather than your $550.

      https://www.techspot.com/bestof/intel-z490-motherboards/

      • Interesting, is there a link to the review showing throttling from the Asrock?

I've not found many reviews of the Asrock but there is one here:

        https://www.profesionalreview.com/2020/05/23/asrock-z490m-pr…

That is with a 10900K overclocked to 5.1ghz with an AIO so very little airflow over the VRM, it should handle a 10600KF just fine.

The Asus Z490M plus is nice, it is also 10% off using the same deal so total is $584.

  • My payment keeps getting stopped by PayPal. I’m assuming it’s because my first purchase is going to be over $150. Is there anyway to make this work? I absolutely don’t see the value of making 4 instalment for an item that’s $80 tbh

    • You can only only get the discount if u use afterpay

      • Sorry, meant to say Afterpay not PP in my post

        • You can select afterpay and payoff the order using gift card

  • tfw intel is cheaper than amd

    • +2

      It's not really though…

  • -2

    Its not ryzen

  • +1

I've bought MSI B450I Gaming Plus and AMD 3600 from Amazon US for a total of 455AUD, should I cancel ? As they have not shipped it yet and buy I5 10400 + ASRock Intel H470M-ITX for $473?

    • +2

I would keep your existing order..

    • +1

You won't be disappointed with the 3600

    • +1

keep the 3600… its a more future proof system.
do you know if that B450 board supports Zen2 out of the box without needing a bios update?

    • +1

ASRock Intel H470M-ITX - ha that's the mobo i bought.

It's decent but it doesn't have wifi 6, or bluetooth 5 like other H series boards. It is a fair bit cheaper because of this.

Oh wait, the B450i doesn't have those either. All much of a muchness i guess!
