Seagate 4TB Expansion Desktop Hard Drive $120 Delivered from Officeworks

850

I've shucked 2 of these and they contain the ST4000DM004 4TB Barracuda Compute - $159 at Umart: https://www.umart.com.au/Seagate-Barracuda-4TB-ST4000DM004-D…

I know they were $99 before COVID but $120 is pretty good and Officeworks will deliver for free within a couple of days, so you needn't wait for Amazon International.

Yes they are SMR and aren't for enterprise heavy write type applications, but for many this is fine and they have the advantage of being quiet and happily sleep when not in use which can be most of the time.

imo SMR for photos/Home Movies/Linux distros/docs are fine. Even for some Gaming (athough SSD is ideal), loading of maps etc is mainly large reads. Home theatre the same.

  • If you want to load some games, load them first because the outside of the platter appears to be used first (tracks faster), so outperforms.
  • Fill the whole disk and check for errors via USB before shucking in case you need to return it.

The write speeds I get from these things are pretty good and they didn't choke when filling them both in one hit.

I know many people love RAID, but RAID is not a real backup (e.g. if you were ransomwared). Sometimes it's safer to directly backup onto external USB disks like this and even take one off site to your mum's place.

Some sound data prepper advice there trevor99!!! XD

  • +3

Given that a CMR drive is just 149, and you still get full warranty, why bother shucking?

      $160.44 delivered that's 33.7% more expensive. Isn't this ozbargain?

      • The linked page has a "Free Shipping" red box showing. Does it not work?

        • +2

          Box says the below

          Free Shipping
Free standard delivery on online orders over $79 in value.

          Conditions apply:
May not be available to some rural/outer areas.
          May exclude some high-volume products.
Excludes Star Track & Express options.
          Online orders only.

        • Don't know i clicked "estimate shipping"

    • At similar price point wouldn't it be better to shuck 2.5" portable to get a drive with lower power consumption? For example
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive for $157 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/559025). Though I have no idea if these portable drives are Rosewell or SMR.

Personally got a strong preference for lower power consumption to help keep the case cool.

      • +1

All Seagate 2.5" drives are SMR these days.

        • Ah, thank you for the info. Will have to remember next time!

  • +2

+1 for description but is 4TB really enough for all those Linux distros?

    • +2

True, but most motherboards have 4 or 6 satas so 1 or 2 SSDs and 3 or 4 of these will get you pretty far.

  • +5

$98.40 delivered here. Based in QLD so might be able to price match with OW?

    • why no one commenting on this or is getting it from there ?

    • +3

Dodgy af website, I wouldn't be buying from them.

Edit: Seems to already be a thread on ozbargain about them, they changed their name though.

Basically you'll probably receive the goods, but it's probably bought using someone else's stolen credit card, i.e triangulation fraud.

      https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54360…

      • +1

Don't need to buy from them, just pricematch at OW and you'll be fine lol

        • So Officeworks just price many any old dodgy af website?… Surely they have policy's in place to stop people just creating their own site to rip them off.

          • @Binchicken22: Unless the person authorising the price beat knows/thinks the website is dodgy, there's nothing that prevents the price beat from happening.

            • @Trance N Dance: Last time I tried to price match I was told by the staff member that they would only match .au sites
Not sure if that's a thing?

              • @Torzz: Depends on the person authorising the price beat. Most take non .au websites to mean they're not Australia based and hence aren't a competitor. Have price beat non .au websites in the past but had to point out that the listed address was in Australia.

    • Someone want to knock on the door of 50 Spencer St Gatton ask what other special deals they have at Poregmart?

    • Thanks for the share, Officeworks price beat that for me in the ACT :)

  • Personally don't think price difference is worth it to have no warranty…

take one off site to your mum's place.

Catch (sold by bing lee) have it for $122 + shipping which is $6 for me.
Buy a $100 gift card at 10% off and total comes to $118 delivered.

Also get 10x flybuys points for buying through catch which would be worth over $5.

That seems like a fair bit of effort for $2

      • Over $7 if you factor in flybuys points.
Better than the 5% discount woolworths gift cards.

I'm patiently waiting for the $99 deal to come back. I need two of them to throw into my FreeNAS. I'm the only user so i don't care about the drive type. This will do the job for torrents and media.

    • +1

I wouldn’t shuck, I shucked this exact drive in April, failed in July.

      • +1

Wow surely not. For $99 I'll take the risk. Torrents are replaceable :)

        • +1

Yep, mine wasn’t torrents though I’d used it for all my media as in holiday videos, birthday ones I’d made for my kid etc. lucky I had a backup!

Here you go it has free shipping. As posted by dealbot

      • +1

brad1601 comments above that site is dodgy AF and could be triangulation fraud

        • Yup fair call. Seems like it is a front for credit card fraud..

    • Torrents is specifically the type of application where you will know why you should not have bought SMR drive pretty much right away.

  • +1

Mine $99 one failed and just got sent a replacement. Impressed that they actually sent me a better model.

    • I've heard Seagate support is amazing.
Did you rma it with the number from the case or the drive? Bother sticking it back in the case before returning?

      • I didn’t even have the case, had thrown it away! Was very happy they accepted my request. Had to pay shipping, but was like $10 so for $110 I’ve got quite a nice backup plus USB hub.

        • USB hub?

          • @DarthLord: there's pretty much same drives in enclosure with two usb ports up front, look it up

  • +1

I grabbed 3 of these, @99 for Linux isos, perfect for odd writing but mostly reading at that price!
Paried with a Cmr parity drive. Wish the price came back down again.

  • +1

    These were regularly $99.

  • +5

My mum just called me and tells me these random people keep knocking on the door and keep giving her hard drives to store.

  • I'm still waiting for $99 deal to come back. It's ok, I can wait…

  • When you shucked them does Seagate show any warranty on the drives online or does it brand it as 'part of another system'?

Shame about the SMR tech :(

    • You get no warranty from the internal HDD when shucked. And i think it just shows as some thing like Seagate Expansion Desktop 4TB on the warranty checker from the HDD serial number. You just void the warranty when shucked.

      • Not true in my experience. If you keep the external case even if you have it shucked. It’s ok. The serial numbe on the drive tells them it’s from a case though.

But Officeworks 100% refused me trying to get it through their warranty, had to go to Seagate

  • Do you prefer elements desktop or this one? Which one is more reliable? Going buy one to back up essential data's…

    • If it's essential data you should buy two.

  • Is it work for Xbox one X?

  • Bought a 2tb Seagate portable 2 years ago from Amazon during a promotion. Paid A$59 delivered. .. now 2 years on, the same drive is still selling abt $98
Still under 3 yes warranty till Aug2021, might shuck it and install to my old game console

    • If you have Samsung M9T inside it's worth even more

      • not sure whats inside, have shuck it… might just keep for another year before i shuck it and install to torrent machine

      • forgot to mention, that's a 2.5" portable 2tb Seagate expansion. Not sure if they have samsung in that form factor

        • Just use HDDScan and no need to open it. Seagate bought Samsung's HDD division and was selling Samsung drives under SpinPoint M brand for a some time, and those Seagate/Samsung drives made it to external enclosures. These were last produced non-SMR 2TB 9mm drives.

          • @[Deactivated]: ok i'll report back

          • @[Deactivated]: Tried with HD Sentinel and Crystaldiskinfo

            It's reporting model ST2000LM007-1R8174

can't find any indication of Samsung there

  • Thanks OP. Was looking for some more storage. Did a click and collect at my local for $120. Cheers

  • if you have eBay+ & haven't used your $5 monthly voucher, $122 at binglee eBay comes to $117 delivered

  • I don't know if its something with my setup, but i bought the same device, and it tends to lock up a lot, especially I used them for torrent and when ever it has to do a lot of read/write at once, it would locked up and dropped off the list of external device HDDs, the only way to get it back was to pull the power plug. when ever this happend i can see 2 kind of event below in the event log related to disk but have not been able to get to the bottom of it.

"The IO operation at logical block address 0x1c8cd4470 for Disk 3 (PDO name: \Device\00000069) was retried"
"Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort4, was issued"

I have also got the lacie porchse 8TB and this is definitely a lot better, no lock up also got similar load profile

    • It's SMR aka really really bad at random writes.

      • Thanks!, i wished i learnt about this before buy, i guess i would buy a new one non SMR and leave this one for pure backup

    • Yes, torrents create files and then write into them in small chunks, pretty much the worst possible use case for SMR drives that need read and overwrite few overlapping sectors for each write.

    • Did you use the cable included or some other third party cable? Is any extension cable being used?
The thing with USB 3.0 is that cheapo cables can cause problems. Most USB 3.0 extension cables are big no-no, unless it comes with the device.

If you use an USB 3 hub, that can also be an issue. It could also be another USB device. The "S" in USB stands for serial. So everything in that serial link can cause problem, so it depends on how your motherboard wires up the USB ports. Also, if it is a cheapo case, the front USB 3 ports may not be that great.

While torrent does write data in lots of small chucks, our NBN is a joke and it shouldn't have the ability to keep the drive that busy (unless you have gigabit NBN, but even that isn't a huge amount of data). Try copying large data from one hard drive (external or internal) to that USB external hard drive, if you get disconnect or reliability issue, it is USB 3. Try connect with original cable to one of the back USB 3 ports (removing as many USB 3 devices as possible). Use process of elimination. If you suspect it is the USB 3 cable, you will need another USB 3 cable (quality one).

Seems like not much of a good deal if so many people have problems with them. I think I'll stay away from the Seagates. What's another good brand for a backup HDD? Western Digital? If so which model?

  • Is it work for Xbox one X?

  • Thanks OP - picked one up :)
