Rats bought this last week for 299.

    AMAZING phone.

    • Yeah, Looks like solid mid-range Android One phone. Just ordered it.

      • -3

You wont say that when Android 11 hits, Nokia manage to always stuff up (putting it nicely) major upgrades, 2, 5, 6, 7 plus, 8.1 all say hi.

And no I didn't forget the Scirocco, that gets special mentions, same with the Pureview.

        • +1

Are any of those Android One?

          • +2

@davasaurus: They all are, USB port issues, software hiccups, poor camera software etc.

People will disagree with me, I get that, but when a mid-range phone takes better photos and has more features than the previous years flagship, I have a problem with that (stock camera app, not gcam).

        • +1

2 mates have 7 plusses; zero issues to report with latest updates.

          • +2

@MasterScythe: My 7 Plus would like a word,
            almost two years of usage.
            Within one year
            - charger port was replaced under warranty. None of my previous phones had port problems.
The January update stuffed up the touch screen
            touch screen intermittently not working.
Both are common issues with the phone as I found out in forums, so QC definitely not great.
The second problem has NO solution.
The phone is too old to be bothered by HMD to be fixed.

Android one was great mostly. Gcam worked well on Android 9, no more on Android 10.

Bough an OPPO A72 recently, best budget phone IMO.
If only Nokia would build something like the A72 with Android ONE with around $300 mark.

            • @ruthlesskid: It just shows how millage differs. I have a 7 Plus of the same age, I have no problems with the charging port which gets plenty of use as my hot spotting the phone runs the battery down quicker requiring more frequent recharges.

I have also had absolutely no problems with updates either. Must be luck of the draw.

              • +1

                @Palamedes: I'd wish I had your 7 Plus.
Whilst I accepted minor problems with the phone, having the USB-C port dying this early is a major QC issue.

            • +1

@ruthlesskid: The only way I'll ever use another oppo is if they pay me to. ColorOS 7 almost makes up for 6 but that they tried to pass off 5 in a recent phone just shows how wretched oppo is to their customers.

7 also has this cool new feature where Google apps crash all the time.

              • @canAdeladian: Can you explain what does your second statement meant?
Just started using ColourOS this week. No crashes with Google apps yet.

            • @ruthlesskid: My 7 Plus wouldn't mind. Almost 2 years of use as well - no problems whatsoever. Battery life still amazing, can still last 2 days+

Maybe you got a lemon from a grey market dealer?

              • +1

                @arislan: Brough from JB HiFi.
The repair was relatively quick, under a month turn around.

            • @ruthlesskid: The port issue was well known, and is covered by an extended waranty. Nobody is perfect.
But still, zero software issues for them.

              • +1

@MasterScythe: Thanks for that info, tho can't find it under a google search.
Can you provide a link for this extended warranty? The port is acting up again last few month.

                • @ruthlesskid: No idea about a Link, we just walked into the local Nokia Care Center, and picked it up a few hours later.

    • +1

For me, most important thing is Android One with guaranteed security and software updates from Google. Also Xiaomi has MediaTek processor, this one has Snapdragon.

      • They don't come from Google.

        • Who do they come from?

          • +1

@S2: Nokia themselves, however, the updates are guaranteed under the Android One program.

            • @HaveANiceDay: This doesn't really mean anything though. My Xiaomi A2 Lite is Android One and it didn't get Android 10 until months after my S10e did. It has missed numerous monthly security updates. My Nokia 7.1 Android One was slightly better, but still not what I would have expected from Android One.

        • +4

@HaveANiceDay Google is the developer and maintainer of Android OS. So they add new features and security updates, then pass it on to device manufacturers, who then push it on their respective devices. So the original source is Google under the Android One program.

          • +1

@paul11: If you say that, then all phones are also updated from Google.

            • @HaveANiceDay: Other phones which are not "Android One" add their own features on top of stock Android, which sometimes ruins/slow down the phone. "Android One" is pure/unadulterated Android. See comment below by user "cohiba" who hated ColorOS.

              • +1

@paul11: It isn't pure Android, AOSP would be. I am aware that there are minimal differences and that I'm just being nitpicky for that point and I don't mean anything by it. The OEM is the one who develops the update rather than Google is what I was saying before, as they are. Even though however I found conflicting information about that with some saying your point about Google developing the update.

                • +8

                  @HaveANiceDay: This is from Wikipedia:

Android One is a software overlay developed by Google and a near-stock version of the Android operating system. The graphical user interface (GUI) of Android One cannot be altered by phone manufacturers, and only runs on certain smartphones. Android One runs on Google's unmodified Android UI and promises regular security updates for three years, as well as OS updates for two years. Android One was started by Google in 2014 with Android Lollipop.

You can think wherever Android One updates comes from. For me, it comes from Google via Nokia servers (as the middleman), for this Nokia phone. I no longer wants to argue with you on this. Feel free to have the last word.

                  • +1

@paul11: From HMD Global themselves, https://cdn.gsmarena.com/imgroot/news/19/01/nokia-os-updates…

                    Sorry for being pedantic.

                  • @paul11: Not quite - OEMs can make minor modifications to the OS. The Nokia 7.1 had an option to hide the notch with a black bar, but this wasn't in AOSP or Android One itself.

Also the updates aren't enforced by Google unfortunately, at least not within any quick timeframe. My S10e got Android 10 before my Mi A2 Lite did, and only just after my 7.1 did.

                    • @MrFunSocks: Don't care about minor updates. But when some manufacturers install all that bloatware and crap apps that are impossible to uninstall without rooting is a headache. That is why Android One is far safer. And god knows what data these bloatware apps are sending to overseas servers without user's permission.

                      • @paul11: I bought Oppo A52 and removed all bloatware in one click without any root.

                        • @Pricebeat: Good for you. Didn't knew Oppo provided a 1-click mechanism to delete all bIoatware. I can't do this on my Xiaomi.

      • Android one is kinda overrated. Depends on how well the developer is.

Xiaomi updates for Android one have been buggy.

      • Nokia 5.1+

Android 10 arrived 4 months after it arrived on my Mi 9T Pro. And 1 month before the Reno Z.

        Android One? ✅
        Nokia????

    • Depends how much you dislike toby/chinese os. Personally I'd take this Nokia without a second thought. Android one for life. I'd prefer this snapdragon in this too, but am not sure how the mtk in the Xiaomi performs.

      • The Mediatek in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 performs on par.

      • +1

Not all Xiaomis have Mediatek most come with SD
also same HMD Nokias also have mtk

        • +3

That's true but this Nokia has SD & that linked Xiaomi has MTK

      • -1

They come with MIUI which is a great OS. Toby or the CCP dont have their own OS.

    • This one, has Snapdragon. That other phone is MediaTek 👎

    • Eww MediaTek.

    • It's a bit of a toss up, they've both got their strengths.

      Nokia:

      • Android One
      • NFC
      • Amazon rather than tobydeals

      Redmi:

      • bigger battery
      • fast charging
      • more storage
      • 1080p display

I guess it's down to what matters more to you, they've both got their strengths and weaknesses.

      • +2

I went for a Redmi. Have owned Xiaomi phones for the last 7 years, well before Australia even knew Xiaomi existed and for the price, you're getting a very good phone!

        • yes, me too. My experience in recent years with Redmis has been absolutely flawless, but the newer Nokias i have found incredibly cheap and buggy. It's just anecdotal of course, but that's just been my experience.

      • To add to the list, Redmi Note 9 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 where as the Nokia is only Corning Gorilla Glass 3

  • Thanks, just purchased to replace the Oppo A52 I purchased last month … hated the ColorOS.

    • What's wrong with it?

    • Does color OS really go so deep that Nova Launcher couldn't make you be able to stand it? I've never used it I hate the look myself but I also just use launchers and don't often touch the setting once my phone's set up

      • +3

I've got the reno 5g and I think coloros is fine. Admittedly, it is much more pwerful.

      • +1

It used to be at the very least. In my opinion, it's standable now and much closer to stock than before.

      • +1

The settings screen is majorly changed compared to stock

    • Could've put a custom ROM on it.

  • +2

That is a great price for a great phone.

  • +1

Great specs for $200-ish price point.

Do note this is from Amazon UK warehouse not local stock.

    • That makes me feel HEAPS better, I needed it within 3 days; so I dont feel so bad paying $289 locally.

  • +10

Given this is delivered from England, is the phone colour 'sand' our charcoal?

    • Sand is gold.

      • +2

And that one went through to the keeper….

  • Does this include GST or is GST added
also if you do not have prime $11 postage

    • GST is always already accounted for if shopping on Amazon.com.au, if you're on USA site then the GST is calculated at final step of checkout

Shipping fee varies depending on your location

  • Mmm, I just bought the 2.3 for $160 a few weeks back. I do like it, but would have preferred this for the extra $40.

  • +1

Thanks. Just ordered to upgrade from my A2 Lite. Happy with this one as the only main issues i had with the xiaomi was the lack of NFC and B28.

    • +1

A2 lite still has security updates until mid next year. Should have kept the A2 lite.

  • -5

    thought nokia was dead xD

    • +2

It's mostly just Foxconn using the brand. https://www.anandtech.com/show/10879/hmd-closes-nokia-brand-…

      • +3

As reported earlier this year, HMD Global and FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Hon Hai/Foxconn Technology Group (we will call the company “Foxconn” for simplicity), paid Microsoft approximately $350 million in cash for various Nokia-related assets. Under the terms of the agreement, HMD got exclusive rights to use the Nokia brand on mobile phones and tablets globally (except Japan) for the next 10 years, standard essential cellular patent licenses, software for feature phones and some other intellectual property. Meanwhile, Foxconn got a manufacturing facility in Hanoi, Vietnam, which is used to manufacture Nokia-branded devices along with customer contracts, critical supply agreements, sales and distribution assets (in fact, these will be owned by a subsidiary of FIH called TNS and HMD will have rights to acquire TNS over the next ten years) and so on. HMD and Foxconn will jointly develop, manufacture and sell Nokia-branded devices, whereas Nokia will participate in development and will receive royalties covering both brand and IP rights from HMD for sales of every Nokia-branded product. The three companies are poised to work together because they critically depend on assets owned by each other.

Isn't it HMD global using the brand with Foxconn manufacturing the devices?

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn

Notable products manufactured by Foxconn include the BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone 11, iPod, Kindle, Nintendo 3DS, Nokia devices, Xiaomi devices, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and several CPU sockets, including the TR4 CPU socket on some motherboards.

        • Yes. Foxconn handles the R&D & manafacturing. I shouldn't have said just my bad, that was wrong wording.

        • Apple uses Foxconn too.

  • it’s only HD+, not FHD (1080p).
if you can handle the low screen res then it’s a bargain phone

    • +1

The GSM page says 720x1600, HD is 720x1280.

      • +3

        Yes, hence HD '+'. FHD has at least 1920 x 1080 and is more commonly 2160 - 2400 x 1080 on 19.5:1 and 20:1 phones.

        1600 x 720 is less than half the pixels of 2400 x 1080.

  • +1

Will this work here with boost no problems? I'm after a cheap phone for my mum

    • +4

yes, has australian bands, and with nfc can use for cardless travel in some states and cardless payment systems.

with big screen your mum won’t need her glasses.

  • This or Xiaomi A3?

    • +10

The Mi A3 will have more unstable updates at least according to their track record however, it will have a better camera and UFS 2.1 storage rather than eMMC 5.1 on this phone. Other differences is that the Mi A3 has fast charging, Bluetooth 5.0 vs 4.2, an infrared port, and an AMOLED display. However the AMOLED on the Mi A3 is 720p and due to the pentile layout will look lower resolution than the Nokia 5.3. The Nokia 5.3 will have one more year of software updates and will have an LCD screen rather than an AMOLED. The Mi A3 also has an unlockable bootloader which allows for you to use custom ROMs and root whilst the Nokia 5.3 does not.

Thanks, Have a nice day HaveANiceDay.

        • Thank you! I've had a really rough day today.

          • +2

@HaveANiceDay: are you ok? want to talk about it?

            • @LinkMonkey: Thank you! It's just that I had a competiton that's all, and we couldn't finish it in time.

              • +1

@HaveANiceDay: did you have fun doing the competition? what was it about? was there a prize at the end?

                • @LinkMonkey: It's actually a competition called F1 in Schools, and I'm not going to receive the competition results until Monday, we ended up handing it in late for our portfolios which would result in no marks, however I hope that they'll be a bit lenient on that. I currently just finished the regional competition and I hope to make it to state which they more base off potential rather than just the score. The competition is about making racing a miniature F1 car with a CO2 canister. There are teams of 3-6. However, there are other aspects such as marketing, and graphic design.

                  • +1

@HaveANiceDay: wow! I just googled F1 in schools, that looks so cool!
I didn't know this kind of thing existed, what a great way to learn about science, math, tech, etc. watching the video makes me want to go learn Autodesk.
I seriously hope you get a good result on your portfolio. Are you likely to go to Singapore? did you get your results today? Please don't leave me/us in suspense, even if they are not great, but I'm sure they will be :)
.. you sound like the kind of person who keeps trying even if you have a setback, so remember to iterate, learn, and improve the next one. You'll do great no matter the result.
and, no matter what you score, you've inspired a random internet person to go learn Autodesk. So, thanks for being awesome!

                    • +1

@LinkMonkey: I won't be receiving the results until Friday haha. It's just for the regionals competition. At least for NSW and QLD, it goes from Regional's to State to National's then World's. The rest don't have regional's. They don't know what the location for 2020/2021 season will be.

Thank you for your kind words!

                    • @LinkMonkey: Hey, sorry for the late reply. I've been quite busy. Unfortunately, we did not make it to the state finals however we are hoping to for the next competition and our school is adding it as a subject now so we should have a lot more time to work on it. Although our team does feel like the judges might've been biased towards the other schools.

    • This over A3. This is from A2 user.

  • -1

    display resolution 720 x 1600, .. in 2020

    This is a joke??

    • +7

it’s how they give you the battery size and soc, etc at that price ….cheap out on screen, also lower res screen means longer run time.

if people don’t mind the res, it’s a lot of phone for $200, android 10, will upgrade to android 11, and 2 years of security patches with android one …..

      • how much more would it cost to put an fhd screen?

        • probably about $40 by the time it’s on display in a shop ….everybody adds a margin along the supply chain.

        • +1

Probably at least an hour of battery life.

Having used it, its a VERY good panel.
Unless you intend to do something that needs higher res, its not pixelated, and is super nice to use.

Also youtube defaults to 720p, which is a nice bandwidth saver :)

    • +35

far less of a joke than paying $2000 for a phone.

      • Bingo.

    • +5

      The same joke as 1366 x 768 non-IPS screens on laptops…. in 2020

      • +3

I would argue a that's a much worse joke, after all 720x1600 is around "retina" territory, which means the joke is mostly on the people complaining
