Damn you would have to be crazy to buy a GPU right now anyone can hold off for a few weeks to see the benchmarks no one is that desperate

  • Re 3070… people are going to be surprised when any half decent aftermarket version of this card costs $900-1000 (thank Nvidia for no founders cards in AU).

At that price point a 2080ti with more vram is going to be a good alternative. I wouldn't buy a 8gb GPU at the end of 2020

The performance difference between 2080ti and 3070 will be negligible

    • What about ray tracing performance?

      • No-one knows for certain, but some reviewers speculate that there doesn't seem to be an increase outside of the existing performance increase e.g the 3080 is 80% faster than the 2080 in both RT and non RT games (source digital foundry)

Regardless, we will know when the 3080 reviews hit on the 14th. That's some time in advance of the 3070 and should be applicable across the board

    • The power bill and extra air con in your room costs $ too

  • These will need to go < $1000 to be of any interest now…

  • +5

I'm glad to see at least 7 people think this is a bad deal. The rest must be 2080 owners still trying to dump their old GPUs on Gumtree for over $1K… good luck :D

    • +2

its tempting… i was a 2080s owner 2 weeks before announcement and sold for $1100…. this is a free upgrade technically plus full warranty again

  • Im interested in seeing the benchmarks between the 2080ti and 3070. What gets more performance, more VRAM or more cuda cores? If they are on par, a $700-800 2080ti would be very tempting. Established drivers, better availability of stock could make it a viable option.

    • At around $800 I'd think the 2080ti is a better option, atleast for the next few months.

Given you won't get stock of 3070 readily till the new year and prices will be inflated.

      • +1

you can latterly get a 2nd hand 2080ti for 700-800 right now

    • At the same price point I would take a 2080ti for sure. 8GB Vram, no thanks… you got that much on a 1070.
Expect 900-1k for reasonable aftermarket models for the 3070..

      • VRAM doesnt mean as much as you think it does for performance. Many games allocate VRAM to max capacity just ebcause they can but dont actually use it…. it's way over stated how important VRAM size is.

        • You are right- I am aware of the technical side of things here e.g a game will generally not allow you to select certain settings if there is not enough vram - there is no actual performance penalty.

That said I don't consider buying a GPU with this level of performance a good idea with this amount of VRAM. You could make an argument for a 1070, 2070 that card performance is going to be a issue before VRAM is, but I do not believe that is the case here with 2080ti-like performance.

Additionally if other cards are released with 16gb (something by AMD, or better NVIDIA cards) - its going to make for a tough re-sell in a few years time .. pass from me

    For those who are surprised that this isn't below the $809 RRP of the 3070, it's not because there's a chance the 3070 might be worse than the 2080 Ti;

    1. The 3070 is not on the market, you can't buy it and prices / stock levels are all subject to change, this is your chance to hedge against that.
    2. Additionally this is the price to get that card NOW, the 2080 Ti is still a very powerful card, and if you want your 3070 now, you could just get this.
    • +1

This. Until we see benchmarks without simple RT only, we won't know. I'd think there's minuscule difference.

    • +1

Good points. Additionally, That $809 RRP is going to be for some very basic aftermarket card. I'd expect models like MSI Gaming, ASUS Strix, Gigabyte Aorus to be in the 900-1k or maybe even 1100 territory. I'll take 3gb extra vram on the 2080ti thanks. I wouldn't even consider a 3070 factoring in it has the same amount of vram as a 1070 (2016 release…)

      • Yeh i dont know about this - i would have though the RRP was based on the Founders Edition, which is not a reference card but a custom card with a very good cooling design. What I'm getting at is the FE card is a premium option and should be similarly priced to AIB competition in terms of performance.

        • I've seen some Euro pricing - they had entry cards like ASUS Tuf close to RRP/FE pricing (still above), then the Strix was another 150 euros.. We will know soon enough, but if you look how decent 2070 super models were 1k here until recently (The strix was $1100) , I can't see how this will be any different with even less supply/higher demand

          • -1

@brrrrrgh: Exactly. I'd rather a high end quiet 2080ti then low end noisy 3070.

    • Opportunity cost as well. For $100/month +extra power bill, you can play faster for 2 more months than 3070

  • Its amazing how if we saw this 6 months ago it would have sold out in hours…. but I will wait till Christmas for the 3080!

    • +1

Funny isn't it, pretty good price after all. In reality it could be quite a while till everyone is buying a good brand 3000 series for a decent price.

It's just a matter of use use something average to get by, or get/keep a 2060/ 70/ 80 super /Ti and take a hit on it.

  • -6

PATIENCE will net you one of these for $600-700 new soon and a used one $500-600… But having said that, pay what you like! As for me, Im waiting not so much for AMDs reply (which I expect to be good and well spec'ed for the price but the next XBOX/PSx as it may well replace my TOWER PC and Ill move to ARM on my MAC at xmas too. Ive predicted it before and if it wasnt for CRYPTO mining for the 2xxx/RT series, the desktop is dead the day they open up the XBOX to all windows app store with kbd/mouse! Dead as in overnight, 0 sales!

    • +2

"Desktop is dead" has been floating around for more than a decade… Just won't happen in the near future even with new Xbox and PlayStation

X86 vs ARM… You'll see then Mac ARM comes out lol. Not ready yet. Give it a few generations and it might be okay.

    • Desktop is dead? I sold by One X and placed a PC under my TV, the fact that Microsoft is better supporting PC gaming shows you are wrong.

  • +1

Never buy these overpriced 2080Ti's now. Buy the new 3080 in around a month which is the new ampere generation and performs way better than 2080Ti and 2 times better than 2080. The new 3080 is going to cost about the same as these overpriced 2080Ti's. Better value for the money.

  • -4

That's actually not a good price, don't fall for it. The 3080 which will have a RRP of $499USD (around $690 AUD) which will perform better than the 2080ti with way less power.

Don't pay more than $600 AUD for a 2080 ti.

    • +1

i thought it is same power consumption

      • -2

well, if it performs better at the same power consumption, it makes it effectively less power for the performance you get.

    • +1

      $690 for 3080? You're dreaming…

    • +1

You've got your RRP wrong. That's the 3070.

      • Yea, you are right, 3070 rather. The 3080 would be around $1k AUD

  • Hold the line, nearly there boys.

  • Why are people even commenting negatively due to a future release is this not a deal if you need it right now? I already know the answer to this as I'm a video editor and these increase my editing time so I'd rather keep earning money working efficiently rather than waiting potential months just to get something better. It's bloody technology it's outdated from the moment you bought it.

I purchased a RTX2080 Super in July to play a few games I didn't want to wait to play them so i bought it a happy decision.

If you have the luxury of waiting or are happy to play on lower quality in the interim then do it but don't neg a genuine deal if it's current. Plus lets be honest if you buy something to get you by you'll spend more or run the risk of buying a dud on marketplace. All of which drop the value proposition of waiting.

    • +7

Because it's a matter of waiting one week to pay the same amount for a 60-80% performance improvement. It's a bad deal.

      • +2

because we dont want people over pay when we know this will be going half in a month.
Though nothing against the OP. it is good to see the prices are breaking down quickly

      • 3080 is technically just over a week ago and that's the founders edition release date which we have confirmed won't be release here so honestly I thinky pull find it might be a little longer and the card everyone is waiting for isn't release until October.

But following your logic I'll take indefinite leave and wait until it's released before I get back to work lol.

Let's just wait for some real world figures in performance when some reviewers actually get release products.

        • Not sure why you keep pretending that everyone has to build a computer with a top-end GPU in it today. If they're already doing the work then they're doing it, and if not, then it's unlikely that they need to start tomorrow. Strawman supreme.

        • My logic isn't that people shouldn't buy things that are a bad deal when necessary. My logic is that we shouldn't proclaim them to be a good deal when they aren't.

  • i'm just pumped to utilise hdmi 2.1 with my LG c9 hdmi 2.1 monitor. 4k@120hz.

  • 2080Ti maybe of benefit to those with a VR headset and wanting to use VirtualLink cable. Some VR headsets (Oculus Quest is one) can utilise a VirtualLink cable which is thin and light. The Nvidia 3000 series will not support it and neither will new AMD cards (apparently), so the 2080Ti will be the most powerful gaming GPU to ever support it.

    • Can you not simply plug in the Quest through a USB-C port on the motherboard provided you have one? Would that be essentially the same thing?

      • I'm not sure at all, I don't use it. I thought the GPU one did image, power and communication. Not sure if USB-C on the motherboard does the same.

  • Well not much of a bargen when you know in just a month this will be under $700 mark.
AMD and new 3000 series will be out. if you are worried for supply, then wait and buy 2080 at almost half the current price !

  • +1

    Normally my ass

  • I'm in the middle of a build and just returned a 5700 XT for full refund after the announcement, but now will need a temporary gpu while waiting for the 3070.

Any recommendations for something that would still hold its value for when the 3070 comes out? Ideally it'll support 1440p 144hz. I was thinking of the 1060 6gb or rx 580 8gb to tide me over? 3900x/b550i itx/nr200.

    • +1

If you can find an RX 580 for under $250 it ain't a bad deal, or an RX 570 which is about 15% slower than the 580 (there was one going for $180 on here). I used the RX 570 at 1440p and it can achieve a tad over 60fps in most demanding games.

      • Thanks :) Will keep an eye out closer to when the rest of the parts arrive. Here's hoping for further price drops by the time I'm ready to install the GPU.

  • Why is this being negged…this fits the definition of a bargain does it not? The kmart sheets got crap for it not being below rrp.

  • I think this is a pretty good deal for a few reasons.

    1. 3070 demand will be high and we aren't even getting the FE cards so release will be later for us. (No official confirmation we won't get FE though).
    2. 11GB GDDR6. Might help in future titles as 8GB is cutting it close if you play at 4K.
    3. Price. Yes the 3070 is $809 but supply, demand and AIB dictates market value (just look at how inflated the 20xx prices were).

Only negative I can see is that the 2080 Ti might drop even more soon.

    • +1

Paying more for a 2020 Toyota than an imminent 2021 model with better engine is not a bargain.

We should be able to get a GTX 3080 for $1,299 price of these (they say starting $1,139). No comparison.

      • +2

I agree, I'd still wait if I didn't need a GPU now. But if you really need a GPU now and don't want to take a risk and potentially have to wait another 4-6 months when stock and AIBs are plentiful, then this isn't THAT bad of a deal. Also we really don't know how the 3070 performs other than Nvidia's own optimistic claim it has 2080 Ti performance. There is also the VRAM to factor in too.

        • Nvidia knows how much performance a stock-standard 3070 produces.
I have never seen a top-of-the-line GPU at its end-of-life decrease so much in value like the 2080 Ti's have.
That comes from Nvidia, the manufacturer.

          • +1

@Crownie: Small bet, 3070 is marginally faster with RTX ON and DLSS ON, 2080Ti is faster without them active.

            • @FabMan: The 11GB on a 2080Ti is the key. Yes. I know the output is everything and the 3070 kills everything a 2080Ti does but I'm still wary of real-world gaming performance.
Not sure how even a 10GB 3080 will increase performance by 50%?

              I'm struggling with a 4GB 970.
              I want that $1,000 3080 sometime in 2021.

  • -1

HAhahahah, just wait for the 3080, cheaper than this and 2x the peformance.

    • +1

      ~38% more performance than 2080ti
      ~80% more than the 2080

  • How much can I get for my 1080ti

$550 - $650 - the easiest way to duplicate those results is to start it for $1 on a Sunday evening, for a 7 day auction…

      • not to bad at all - 3 years old, bought for twice as that - only lost $500, vs 1k if you got 2080 ti

        • If you're going to sell, I'd do it quickly - prices are only going down from here !

  • Does anyone know if there are any 3080s that have been announced with a 2.7 slot cooler like the strix 2080ti?
I want to deshroud to use with noctua fans in an Ncase m1..
As much as everyone is saying don't do it, I kind of want to pull the trigger on the strix card… 😬

  • Dang, $750 for Xbox series X, or buy 3070 rtx for equal or more the price Holly hell.

Ps5 gonna be $850 aud, Holly hell people gonna buy the 3070 for sure or not at all

  • +2

First we had Nvidia and there RTX 3000 series GPUs. Now we get AMD announcing there Zen 3, Ryzen 4000 series CPUs and RDNA 2 with Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. The next couple of months is not the time to buy current technology unless it was heavily discounted. With all these new Nvidia and AMD releases just around the corner.

  • +1

Xbox Series X 399 when traded in at eb games..

    Absolute bargain

Just needs to drop another 50% and I'll buy it. 3080 and 3090 Australian prices were revealed and they are what Nvidia said they were. Hopefully the 2080ti's will see a massive drop in price so I can finally replace my shitty 960 I've had for 4+ years
