Cheaper fare, no A380 (CX flies A330's on this route), however no (highly unlikely) chance of industrial action stoppages either ;)

  • Touche, Qantas.

  • Nice, keep it coming =)

  • EDIT: Nevermind! I wonder if this deal will be advertised?

    • I did a search for May and it worked for me.

Damn just booked Qantas. Hope there are no strikes during my flights :(

Here's the direct link to the promotion

    • Thanks - updated post

Have you flew in an A380 before? Economy class is literally the same as any planes, but with more people in there. Takes twice as long to get off the plane and collect your luggage

    • It is hardly intelligent to question the maintenance of HAECO

    • Both airlines are shit
but if i have to pick.. cathay for sure.

Qantas was gd bk in the 90s
      now theyre just crap

moved their repair centre to phillipines was their biggest mistake.

when the last time u heard cathay got near missed accident? and when the last time you heard bad news about qantas? surely you never fly with cathay, so you never know about good and bad service

been on cathays A330's, the seats dont incline, only slide forward, couldnt get a good sleeping position, my neck felt broken after the flight.
other than the seats, cathay is excellent

    • +4

i would not want to fly with planes which seats incline!! i would love the one that recline fully flat though

    • +2

yeah tried it. i'm not a person that likes to sit for long periods of time (i cant even game for say 3+ hrs)

the sliding seat is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad.

Thanks OP! Much rather fly with Cathay than Qantas considering the latest events. Plus the service was really good, from memory.

  • Wooot hooo

  • Melbourne to HK soon?

As mentioned seats on Cathay DO NOT recline, they simply slide forward and force you into a slouch. Good for day flights as no one will recline onto you and you can enjoy watching the personal TV. However, bad for night flights.
IMO, Qantas' A380 Economy seats are much better then Cathay's. The latest seat i've found to be very comfortable, and ven have a netted foot rest. The A380 has similar levels of entertainment too - in fact Qantas' A380 uses the same Latest Panasonic Avionics AVOD system with a 10.6" 720p HD seatback display as Cathay's. Both have almost limitless choices of Videos and Music. However, Cathay may have may have more variety of Asian videos.
In terms of service - Cathay is rated much higher then Qantas. Although not making up for it, Qantas' A380 has a self serve economy bar with soft drinks, cookies and fruit.

Regardless of recent events my preference between Cathay/Qantas to HK if flights were the same price would be Qantas for a night flight, and Cathay for a day flight. In fact I'm already booked on a Cathay day flight to HK during that time period, bought the ticket before the sales.

+1 to this. A Cathay HK-SYD night flight was one of them most painful flights I've experienced. And I'm quite short. For the poor guy next to me, all the reclining seat did was slide his knees into the seat back.

QF A380 (seats still so shiny and new) > QF A330 > CX A330

Bargain +ed for the price and lack of CC fee

    • Hmm, I traveled CX several times recently on night flights and had no problems sleeping with the sliding seats. Individual preference I guess.

But then I've learnt to sleep anywhere: planes, trains, cars, buses, cricket, work. :)

      • you still can slide the seat, it is not fixed like on the train seat

    • I agree. Cathay Pacific seats are pretty shit.

For International flights, CX in flight service is better from my experience. With these two deals, I'd choose QF since I have never flown A380 before and would get my frequent flyer points. It should be enough to get one domestic flight. Points from CX would be useless for me.

    • You still get qantas ff points flying with cathay (and also status credits) through the oneworld alliance. You just miss out on any bonus points if you have ff status (silver/gold/platinum).

      • Many Airlines do not give you points on their Sale/Deep Discount fare types.
An 'O' class Cathay Pacific fare does not qualify for any QFF points at all, but may qualify for for Asia Miles/Marco Polo club. Qantas' sale fares to/from HK however, do earn QFF points at standard economy rate (1x rates), and status credits at the rate of 0.5 economy.

Upon Checking, eligible economy points earn fares for Marco Polo on CX are as follows
Y/B/H/K/M/L/V. If the booking class is 'O' as above, it appears you'll get no points on Marco Polo as well.

      • I totally forgot CX is in one world. It looks like CX doesnt give points to QF for this flight anyway.

  • Just for fun I looked up cheapest HK flights (1 way, not direct & take ages!) Makes this return deal look great. $201 from Melb $260 from Syd $280 from Gold Coast plus bags, food etc
    http://adioso.com/au/sydney-au-to-hong-kong-direct
    Jetstar 7 Mar 26h30m!!! (Syd-Melb $59 Melb-Singapore $111 Singapore-HK $90)
Also AirAsia can be cheap via KL. Gold Coast-KL-Singapore $211
Cheapest: asked friends if they had tickets they could not use - got a free (double) HK return.

    • I like these multi stop ;) haha

  • any charge for changing the flight date?

    someone please kindly answer… ^^

  • CX is definitely better than Qantas regardless pricing.

    • union mentality, need to protect qantas brand, they always support qantas, what ever happen to qantas.
