  • If I don't need anything with 4k will I get improvement over the first generation of Chromecast? Like faster connection time, etc?

    • +3

I had a 1st gen and replaced with this generation, load times are faster (quite a bit)

      • Are you referring to buffering times? Because I’ve got a 1st gen that buffers a lot (Plugged in right next to router, getting 50mbps) on youtube/kayo.

        • +1

Thats because 1st gen only has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi

        • yeah, netflix took 20 seconds usually to load a row, now less than 10 seconds

    • The 3rd-generation Chromecast supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz which helps the connection if the 2.4ghz is congested

Also worth considering, if you’re a Netflix subscriber you can get a bundle with the new Chromecast with Google TV that includes a $95 Netflix credit, basically makes the new one $45.

Dips in and out of stock but I was able to order one a few days ago.

    • Keep in mind takes 2 months to ship.

      • Does look that way now, wasn’t when I ordered. I guess it depends on how soon you want/need it.

      • Yeah what's with that? I got my wife to order one from the USA and they are saying NOV ship time? (and this was near a week ago she ordered)

What do people uses these for? Most new tv have app and you don’t have to use your phone to cast. I have an old chrome cast that is just plug into the tv that never been used.

    • Netflix Optus sports
and with kids, abc and disney

I specifically bought a "dumb" TV because I don't want to be stuck with shit apps that don't get updated nearly enough and eventually break altogether. Once your app deprecates and is no longer supported you have to replace the entire TV to use it again.

Not to mention it's just another (profanity) device tracking my habits that I have to restrict on my network and DNS servers.

@Tacooo: This ^ my tv is a couple of years old now and there is no updates, I can't install new apps like disney+

        • it's easier to use the phone to navigate, pick, search then using a controller

        • You do realise that not everyone upgrades their TV every two to three years, right?

I have an 8 year old Samsung smart TV in my home office that is in perfect condition and far from "ancient". But the Samsung TV OS and Netflix app can't be updated any more, so I'm left with a sub-par Netflix app that can only be watched using the primary account and none of the subsidiary/shared accounts. Plus the Samsung OS/app load time is super slow, so I bought this with the Netflix bundle to solve that problem.

I now have a near new, pristine condition and much smarter TV than I had last week… and it cost me <$50.

    • This comes handy when some TV apps work really crappy & slow.

  • Sorry if dumb question. I have screencast app on my pretty old kogan tv, which connects my phone. However when I try to stream soccer matches from optus sports app, the video will shows only black screen on the tv.

Will this chromecast solve the issue?

    • If it can cast the sports app it should work but maybe do some research before buying.
