No, future Pixel phones aren’t exempt from Google Photos’ money grab

    https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/12/21562908/google-future-p…

    • Hhm i thought pixel 5 (and 4a 5g) would be the last ones but still included

    • +5

Starting on June 1, non-Pixel phones will have High quality backups count against their 15GB or additional Google One storage. Made by Google devices — specifically, the “Pixel 1-5” — are exempted from this change. (Until their free photo uploads expires, 2022 for pixel 3a, 2023 pixel 4, etc)

      https://9to5google.com/2020/11/11/pixel-google-photos-backup…

      RIP Pixel 5a and beyond

      • +15

I feel less people may care about this than you guys think haha

        • +14

Its a huge change… I dread going back to the days of worrying, "did I back up my photos" or keeping phone storage empty since its all in the cloud anyway.

This luxury is so convenient people may not realize its impact until its gone and too late to protest :(.

edit: just looked up google one storage, $25 a year for 100gb.

          Quick math;
High quality photos are free for 3 years w/ purchase of new phone, 3x25 = 75$ ontop of a new phone cost, which generally would be free (plus not limited to 100gb). I can guarantee the pixel 5a wont be 75$ cheaper ;)

          Sad days

@Jay-rad: @Jay-rad: It's like getting people addicted by offering free drugs and then raising the cost to procure it when they are dependent on it. This is the model adopted by Google. It seems to be a well planned move.

            • @Munki Kundi: Yup I agree. I'm going back to copying my photo files on the laptop every month then. I'm not paying anything.

The moments thing is the only thing i missed but Samsung Cloud or LG phones got that feature not sure about oneplus

            • +1

@Munki Kundi: Google have done A nestle (see milk powder).

        • +3

It was the reason I decided not to purchase the Pixel 5, and I'm sure I'm not the only person.

          • +10

@ExtremeDavo: Just goes to show that everyone's different. Ever since Google stopped offering free full resolution in favor of "high quality", I've thought it a gimmick and not something I've cared about when choosing phones.

My family has 6TB of "free" cloud storage with our family MS office subscription, so plenty of room for our phones to auto-backup in full resolution and never have to worry about losing shots. To be extra safe, my NAS then pulls a copy from the cloud for local storage and periodic backups.

            • +3

@CacheHunter: same get one drive from. microsoft with office365 and i also backup to my PC via cables ……

            • @CacheHunter: Guess I have that too. Never looked into it.

Can you please tell me what kind of photo search it offers.

I kinda love being able to type in two names and get photos of those two people. Or typing in car and getting a bunch of interior shots from when I was installing new components.

              Does anything else offer this?

            • +2

@CacheHunter: Which is cool an all but I don't have a family of 6 (or want to manage 6 emails to have that) while paying $129p.a. for 6 TB of storage nor do I want to buy a $600+ synology nas that I have to configure to scrap photos for auto-backup

Just saying the ease of gphotos auto-backup is too good… to be true I guess :/

          • +1

@ExtremeDavo: So I was thinking, this wouldn't really bother me, cos don't get me wrong - I get you. But I was thinking how I always back my data up myself, and I also don't take many photos! So I dunno hey, I kinda think it's a gimmick?

            • @dandoon: Yeah I see your point. I also back up my photos locally (although much more difficult with the shutdown of the Gdrive/Photos sync), so perhaps my next phone it won't matter.

It's more around family sharing and the easy AI search. That probably bugs a lot of people knowing their data is all on google servers being scanned - but the convenience for me outweighs them having photos of me eating food. I'm also into the gimmick of them showing me memories since I don't post on other social media.

I agree with other comments - High Quality is more than enough, but for some reason it just irks me around photos being touched/converted - even though I'm sure I wouldn't notice. Also it was about the unlimited 4K video uploads that were huge.

        • +3

          👆 my thoughts exactly

I rather have my photos on my phone or on a physical SSD

      • And I thought the free photo upload is for a lifetime.

        • it is for pixel 1

          • +1

@mmd: I bought a P1XL a month or so ago for $75 purely for the unlimited backups. I plug it into my HP Microserver every week or so, copy photos off it and it backs them up.

            • @ebosh: That's what I do too.
              Does videos too.

            • @ebosh: You don't have to capture pictures from pixel for backup or you can just capture pictures from different phone save any pictures to pixel phone and still eligible for unlimited photos backup?

              • +1

@Modesty: Nope. I can copy pics from my Pixel4 > N40L > Pixel1 and they get uploaded in original quality. It also does RAW backups from my DSLR.

                • @ebosh: Oh thats great. How do you copy , via bluetooth/wifi? But it changes the date and doesn't show the location of pictures on copied phone (pixel 1) am i right?

                  • @Modesty: I'm sure there's a way to automate it, but this is my process:
                    - Copy photos from P4 to server via wifi (with solid explorer) once a week or so
                    - Copy photos from server to P1 via cable
                    - P1 automatically backs up to Google photos

The metadata is retained so time/date, camera model, and location are all saved.

          • @mmd: Oh really? I better find my pixel 1! How does that work if your account is linked to a newer pixel?

            • @serpserpserp: Google Photos offers unlimited photo backups for everyone as long as the photos are under 16MP and you're willing to save the files at "High Quality." But with the Pixel and Pixel XL, you can store unlimited photos and videos (in 4K!) at full resolution and not have it counted against your quota. Here's how photo backups work on the Pixel.

              https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.androidcentral.com/how-goog…

I use a separate account but you should just be able to log in with your account. See link above

              • @mmd: So the photos need to be uploaded from the Pixel phone. Is there a way to automate that without plugging in and out the device?

                • @leiiv: Well no, otherwise you can just be uploading your 4k videos from any old device and not even have a pixel.

              • +1

@mmd: Thanks for that. Will get out my old pixel and fire it up for any 4k videos I want to back up.

            • @serpserpserp: Also following on from my reply above, I'm logged in with the same account on my P1 & P4 and it works fine.

              • @ebosh: So does it back up at high quality from your P4 and at original quality from your P1? Is that how it works?

                • +2

@serpserpserp: Yep, original on the p4 gets transferred to P1 and the upload is done at original quality.

        • terms and conditions do change and google probably doesn’t want to store peoples photos forever, no money in it, though they do want to store your movement data.

facebook makes money from image recognition of people in photos and linking relation ships , and then being able to place ads, not site google needs to do that as people need to share their data as minimum and they can look at emails to develop better user experiences.

      • This is probably irrelevant, but Isn't that amazon prime give you unlimited photos storage if you are a member?.

        • Only Amazon Prime US does.
Amazon Prime AU does not include unlimited photos (5GB only).

      • +1

Thanks. This just solidified my choice between this phone and the pixel 5.:I need that storage.

    • +5

Wtf, how is it a money grab?

    • +4

wtf, how is that a money grab? They've provided a service for free when their competitors charged through the ass.

    • +1

They better be MicroSD compatible or it's bye bye Pixel.

      • pixel phones aren’t a money spinner for google, they are a way to showcase new versions of android , otherwise they would depend on the manufacturers to promote new android features, and most have their own flavours of hardware and users interfaces.

        • Seeing as retailers are clearing stock for Pixel 4's and Pixel 4 XL's at around $500~$700, I believe they were making quite a bit of money to say the least, when they were selling them off for $1k.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/361468?page=23
Look for "Pixel 4 XL 64GB $628 (Clearance)"

But even if what you are saying is true, and they really don't care about the money that rolls in, that's okay too.
There are, as you have stated, plenty of other capable android manufacturers.

Still doesn't change the fact that future Pixel phones are extremely unattractive. No microSD(?), no free cloud storage, no Google Play Music.
I'll stay on board if they have microSD compatibility, but that is literally the last line before I go to another manufacturer, or even Apple. And I hate pairing an iPhone with my Windows PC.

    • Just saw through this they’re removing the free high quality option for everybody.

Apart from Gmail, photos were the last item I had to switch to iCloud and I’ll be doing that now. Screw Google.

      • I mean, you're just paying for Apple then, because Google is charging similar instead of it being free. How is Google losing out in this change?

        • Not to mention Google offering cheaper storage than Apple.

    • +1

That is really rather disappointing. By far my biggest motivator to stay with pixel is the camera and they aren't doing a lot to help it.

    • I think I'm gona move to Amazon Photo's since I have prime

      • 5gb for prime in Australia

  • Can you double stack this with Google One member 10% store credit too? So $100 bonus + $79.90 Google one 10% bonus?

    • Should be yes, also can pricematch with other retailer and combine with your Chromecast credit. I am waiting for my Chromecast credit to arrive

    • +2

"Google One members on certain plans get a percentage back on eligible Google Store purchases in the form of Google Store credit.

Google One members with 200GB plans: 3% back in Google Store credit
Google One members with 2TB, 10TB, 20TB or 30TB plans: 10% back in Google Store credit"

So you have to have 2TB or above for the 10%

    Cmon Google, where's the under-display fingerprint reader…

    • +10

They're not as good as a traditional capacitive fingerprint reader.

      • +3

why put it on the back when it can be on the power button?

        • +17

          The back is better.

        • Power button fingerprint scanners are infuriating. They're too narrow to capture a good reading of a fingerprint and picking up your phone slightly differently makes it unable to match. Phone cases mess with the ability to scan properly.
I'm not sure when the last time I actually used the power button so the argument that you'll be pressing it anyway is invalid.

Then again I used Sony's Xperia nightmare so I'd hope things would have improved since then.

      • Ah.. I was just thinking it'd be more convenient while using the phone on the table.

What's the appeal of this 4a 5G over the OnePlus Nord? Purer Android experience with slightly longer updates. Any of the extra frequency bands useful in Australia?

    • +3

local warranty, much better camera (not even in the same league as a pixel), Stereo speakers.

Camera probably the biggest reason tbh. Also oneplus is transitioning towards a Samsung style UI and moving away from stock android.

    Has Black Friday sale started?

  • Cannot seem to see this deal when I go to the google store. All help appreciated

    • -6

      Time to go to specsavers.

Cleared browser cache. All ok now thanks

Can we buy phone get credit then return phone?

    • Just because you can commit fraud doesn't mean you should.

    • I think we should all do this.
Then use the $100 towards photo storage!!!

    • +1

Have you read opening paragraph above?
"Offer isn’t valid if the device (or any part of the order) is returned. It’s non-transferable, and not valid for cash or a cash equivalent"

  • This seems like a better deal than having Google store credit

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Google-Pixel-4a-5G-Black-128gb/2…

    • "Brand New sealed/Aus stock/Release 19th Nov"

A very fine print. So, you're paying some cheat $685 upfront and no phone!!!

      • If it's a scam though what's the angle? They take your money and run and you have to PayPal claim it back?

        • +2

PayPal loses, so do you (have to go through pains of claiming a refund). The cheat wins!

      • How is this guys a cheat?

He likely ordered a few and selling the phone a little under RRP hoping to get $100 credit for $20.

All I have to say is its big risk to throw out 4K for 500 bugs of credit.

    • I reckon the only way to get value out of this deal is what this guy probably did: buy enough to allow you to get the device you want for free and sell them at a small loss. Big risk though…

  • Can you use credit for Google one storage?

  • +1

Why not buy a 5 at this price?

    • +1

Show me pixel 5 for $800

      • and $100 credit.

      • -1

Show me a mid range phone for less than $800, oh there is loads.

      • I got Pixel 5 for $800.20 via 11% off Singles Day and 10% off GC at JB Hi-Fi, and been using it since last Wednesday.

        • Hi Bigboomboom, how can you get 10% off GC from JB :)? Thanks

      • just bought a Pixel 5 for $800 on gumtree, brand new unopened ;)

        • Hi mate, thinking of buying too but wondering..

How do these sellers make money if RRP is $999? Surely they couldnt have bought it for less than 800?

Is it safe to buy from gumtree if its local pickup? Warranty secure?

          • @emboon: He had a $500 dollar discount when he had bought it from the play store , he showed me the receipt

            • @liongalahad: Oh wow. Thats a great deal. How do you usually pay for these kind of transactions? Is it usually cash? Or bank transfer?

              • @emboon: I met with the guy and gave him cash after seeing the sealed box. He accepted PayPal if I preferred, but cash was ok for me

                • @liongalahad: Are you able to open the box in front of him? I read some stories saying they replace the insides with a heavy object same weight as phone and reseal professionally. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I found a gumtree seller and saying he actually selling multiples of the phone so might be trustworthy.

                  • @emboon: I don't know it depends from seller to seller. The guy said I could open it before buying if I wanted to, but I trusted him.

    • I thought the two are the same except from the case…..

      • +1

wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, high refresh rate and finally bit bigger battery with smaller display means better battery life on Pixel 5

        • +2
          • 8Gb RAM Vs only 6Gb on Pixel 4a 5G
      • +3

Headphone jack on 4a 5g , not on pixel 5.

  • Also smaller screen 4a.

    • +1

The Pixel 4a 5G has a larger screen than the Pixel 4a and the Pixel 5.

  • Made a switch from Samsung galaxy s8 and the best decision made. Love the android stock experience compared to Samsung being slow and unresponsive at times, it's really snappy, love the feel. I'm all for the OS after seeing how slow Samsung is.

Also bought it when jbhifi was on special which was awesome.
