    • Yeah, it’s weird, I didn’t even add a size in the tags.

      • It auto suggests tags, so you need to edit them.

        • I did. It doesn’t suggest them, it just applies them once you post.

  • So what is the consensus on the "damaged box" TVs? Are they TVs that have minor image quality issues?

    • +22

I'm pretty sure they are TV's that have damaged boxes.

    • +1

TVs are fine. As per previous deals, many users said that their box was not even damaged. If there was any damage it was minor

    • +8

From personal experience and spending too much time here and on Whirlpool, Sony’s “box damaged” items are brand new items with packaging that are either not damaged at all and appear to be brand new retail units, or boxes with sticker residue or minor marks. Contents itself, brand new, full manufacturer warranty.

Sony wants to get rid of stock without pissing off their retail partners by undercutting them.

This way, the stores have an excuse to not price match "damaged" goods.

        Everybody wins.

According to this comment, you should exercise some precaution. Also worth noting that things like credit card insurance may not cover faults in box-damaged items and factory seconds.

FWIW: I've ordered a couple small "box-damaged" items from Sony, they seemed to be brand new and the boxes were not damaged.

      • This is a new TV from Sony covered under manufacturer warranty. What purpose does 'credit card insurance' server?

        • +1

Some cards cover accidental damage. e.g. my 28 Degrees (old policy, no longer offered) card covers accidental damage or theft of any item purchased with it for 12 months, up to $2K. If I were to drop the TV and damage it, they'd give me up to $2K to get it repaired or replaced. This type of thing only covers brand new items, however.

Yeah exactly, the guy was an employee and I'd trust his word more than whatever guesses people want to put out there. I'd wait for a new one to be this price.

        • +3

You would trust a random anonymous guy on a forum compared to all the people that have received these damaged box TV's and said they are brand new with nothing wrong? There is a 'refurbished' section on the ebay store, do we really think that legally Sony want to be stupid enough to try flog off refurbished TV's in the 'box damaged' section with 'AS NEW: This item may have damaged carton. It is an unused & undamaged item in its original packaging.'

    • I purchased one a few months ago. I couldn't find any damage on the box and the TV was brand new.

    • Why would you take the risk.

  • +1

Hope there would be a similar price this Friday from the retailer.

    • -1
AS NEW: This item may have damaged carton. It is an unused & undamaged item in its original packaging.

      maybe they did unbox inspection.

      • -4

No they are QC failed returns that people found to be DOA or didn't work. These aren't box damaged.

        • Mine (65 X9000H) was in a brand new box, TV manufactured in September 2020.

          • -3

@interfreak: Probably repacked into a new box after sorting issues out.

            • +4

@fuzor: So Sony had a TV manufactured in September 2020 in China, which was shipped to Australia and supplied to a retailer, someone then bought it from a retailer, returned it, Sony put it in a brand new box, repackaged with all the original film attached to the screen, new remote and paperwork, and resold and delivered it all within a few weeks of the TV being manufactured (I purchased it on October 13)?

              Really?

            • +3

              @fuzor:

Probably repacked into a new box after sorting issues out.

So why do they also sell “seconds” which are actually refurbished units? Which is exactly what you’re describing? Do you realise how much trouble they would get into for advertising false descriptions? It’s the official Sony eBay store, not some shady third party seller.

If you’ve got any evidence to back up your claims, it’d be great to hear.

  • +5

Better ask for forgiveness than permission? LOL

  • No one is having sale on 65 inches. It's wired. When 55 inches were the standard everyone used to have sale on them.

    • +1

Yeah, I've been surprised by that too. I'm only monitoring it for the price protection claim ;-) So we just wait. There will always be a new models (from Sony and their competitors), and Sony will need to drive demand after Christmas. In the medium and long run, time is always on the side of the patient value buyer, especially for consumer electronics.

  • +1

I heard some of the box damaged items are refurbs - is this true?

    • +1

No, that would be the “Seconds” that Sony sells. Box damaged items are brand new.

  • damn that's tempting… are we expecting better prices than this on Friday?

  • +3

    Waiting for a deal on X95H 75"

    • +1

      yes… or 65” 🤞

    • Same here. Cheapest X95H 75” I’ve found so far is $3,870 at Videopro https://www.videopro.com.au/p-13644-sony-75-kd75x9500h-4k-ul…

    • Same, do you think they'll have a sale for boxing day for this?

      • Wish I knew! I guess it all depends on stock levels with Sony and how aggressively they want to sell TV. Samsung has come out with some massive discounts on their Q80T line which most people see as the direct competitor to the Song 9000H and X95H. Maybe Sony might have it’s turn on Cyber Monday?

    • If you can get access to the good guys commercial site the 95H 75 is $3,397

    • +1

whats the diff between x90 and x95?

      • +3

        about 5…

      • X90H is HDMI 2.1 Compatible and the X95H isn't, however it's got a better processor and picture quality.

        • +1

same amount of zones? i actually went to have a look at them during my lunch break… couldnt notice a difference between them.

  • +2

Got a box damaged 85 version from a previous sale and the box had a thumb sided dent in it but TV was brand new.

  • +1

27 sold at time of posting. Sony must have some really clumsy warehouse staff…

    • Just as long as those warehouse staff ‘handle with care’ your new Bravia

    • I duno, pretty easy for a box to get damaged coming over from wherever they come from, even when shipped to the store no doubt damaged ones are shipped back to Sony since stores know that people will be hesitant to buy something like a TV if the box has a dent in it.

      • +2

The purpose of the box is to take the damage of freight to protect the contents inside. If you want a perfect box, then they'll just start having to put the box in another box. And then someone will complain that they want the second box also undamaged so then you'll need 3 boxes. Where does the madness end?

        • +1

For sure but the consumer mind whats that same box undamaged even though it is going straight to the recycling. I would be wary of damage to what is inside the box if i went to pick it up with a dent in it, especially something fragile like a TV.

Common sense would say that Sony would be better off having spare boxes to put the TV's in after and resell as New. Who knows, there might be some law that if the box is opened it needs to be declared as box damaged even if its put back in an undamaged box. Would explain why so many have reported that they have received them in boxes without damage.

  • I had the worst experience with their "Damaged Box" TV. If you read the description it says factory second or refurbished. They sent me a second hand damaged TV. Power cable was frayed with electrical tape on it. plugged it in and the screen just kept flickering. remote was second hand. Went through the return process on ebay. They accused me of receiving 2 TV's which I didn't. Then tried to scheme me via email off ebay by proving incorrect return labels twice (Wrong address and model). I raised issue with ebay. They still sent incorrect return labels. tried getting return via paypal and it was rejected. Took almost 2 months for them to send correct label. Even after that, they picked up the TV and heard nothing for another month. The tracking never showed delivered and they played dumb saying it was never delivered. I had to raise an investigation with TOLL. TV was delivered 4 days after it was shipped. Provided that info to ebay and eventually got my refund.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend them. they also take ages to get back to you (like days).

    • +1

Are you sure you bought a "box damaged"? Some of their items say "seconds" or "refurbished" in the title, which i assume would be different.

    • Glad you got your money back in the end! It sounds like Sony are a real pain to deal with if something goes wrong. Thanks for the heads up.

    • +3

If you read the description it says factory second or refurbished.

The 'box damaged' listings do not state this on the product description itself, it sounds like you purchased a 'Seconds' TV.

On box damaged items Sony state "AS NEW: This item may have damaged carton. It is an unused & undamaged item in its original packaging."

The generic 'New/Never Used' eBay description does mention that the goods could be "a factory second (i.e. it has a small flaw that does not affect the operation of the item such as a scratch or dent)." but I'd rely on the claims made specifically made by Sony in the listing, not eBay's generic one.

    • +1

Was Damaged Box, not the Seconds. The issue wasn't so much the TV being damaged. It was dealing with Sony for a return and refund that was a pain in the butt.

  • +1

Wish they'd start dropping some 85" again!

    • +1

Bought the 75" cause I got sick of waiting. Hopefully a Sony employee is on Ozbargain and starts putting a thumb whole in the box so we get some cheap tvs.

  • +1

    thumb whole in the box

    ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • Or maybe just half a thumb…

  • Just seen these are out of stock.. Missed it :(
    Do they come up often?

  • Mine arrived today. One small dent in the box - not unlike anything I haven’t seen on any packaging for large electrical items I’ve purchased new from retail stores.
