In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency-a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office.

Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune's Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective-the story of one man's bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of "hope and change," and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.

This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

I couldn't say it any better sir!

Where'd you get your 'statistics' from, Facebook?

Trumpet ramped up the drone killings and also ended the transparency.

Who knew there were so many conspiracy theorists and racists on Ozb? Oh, wait.

    • +15

      Yeah its a shame…

    • +12

      Where are the racist comments?

      • +6

True that, went through the comments and dont think I saw anyone mention race or anything, apparently not liking Obama makes me a full blown racist… opps

        • +7

They may have been referring to the birther claims in some comments that falsely claim Obama wasn’t an American. Potentially such beliefs have nothing to do with race, but in some cases it seems like it does. As Gillard said, her gender explained some of her treatment but certainly not all of it.

      • -1

Lefties always cry racism or sexism in any disagreement, they can't help it.

    • +2

the only people who like obama are status quo defenders and most people hate the status quo, so they hate the guy who lied about fixing it while defending it at all costs.

    • +6

So, if someone doesn't like Obama then they're racist? I'm not a doctor but I think there's something wrong with you.

    • +4

How the heck are the biggest headlines of the day conspiracy theories? The Snowden Files and the NSA files (Manning Files) were headlines in every major publication. Headlines on every TV channel.
Chelsea Manning is still in jail. Julian Assange is still in jail. Edward Snowden is in exile. The greatest surveillance state in history is still in place. Your data is all still being watched as is that of all Americans.
The drone assassinations that were 90% civilian were reported in the NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal.
Your colossal ignorance doesnt make knowing this man is a war criminal and traitor some kind of conspiracy theory.

      • +4

In case you missed it, Obama pardoned Manning in 2017. She was rejailed for not testifying by the current regime

        • The fact remains she is in jail right now for exposing the Obama administration's crimes

          • @mycosys: As buckster pointed out, that’s false. Firstly she’s not currently in jail. And secondly the recent sentence was for not working with the Trump justice department’s grand jury.

Some people hate Obama soo much that apparently everything is his fault. Even the Iraq war which he voted against.

      • +4

The fact that anyone thinks Trump was a good president, let alone believes the rubbish he's been spewing, is a showcase of just how poor our education systems are.

        That’s cute, sweetie 😂

      • +19

Imagine being an incumbent president running against Joe Biden (a weak candidate) and losing… by almost 4% on the popular vote LOL

        • +16

True. And Trump, having lost the pop. vote in 2016, only won by 77,000 votes in 3 states. And he called this victory a landslide. Biden won 2020 by significantly more.
Trump truly is a 5yo sore loser. He lost, so his solution is to sue America 😂

          • -1

@Juan93: The USA presidential election is decided by the Electoral College, not the popular vote. Just looking at the figures as they stand today, Biden has won by only 43,735 votes in 3 states. 10,457 votes in AZ (11 EV), 12,670 votes in GA (16 EV) and 20,608 votes in WI (10 EV), so this election was actually decided by a smaller number of votes than was 2016.

Biden's victory in 2020 was not significantly more than was Trump's win in 2016. The margin was 306 vs 232 in the Electoral College in both instances, so exactly the same.

            • +7

              @unity1: Lmao. Nice try.
Biden’s margin of victory in the Midwest states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin was much larger than Trump’s four years ago. Biden won the trio by nearly 260,000 votes, more than three times Trump’s margin of roughly 77,000 in the same states.
And he flipped Georgia and Arizona, historically red states.
Actually, a very convincing win in the EC in the end, and an annihilation in the popular vote. Biden actually has a true mandate of the people, something Trump never had.

              • @Juan93: You made the point that Trump only won by 77,000 votes in 2016. That's true. If those votes fell the right way for Clinton in WI, MI, and PA then she would have won. In saying that, if only 43,735 votes in AZ, GA and WI had fallen the right way for Trump in 2020 then he might have won. So in that respect, this election was actually closer than 2016.

                • +1

@unity1: No one is saying that, because it’s simply not true.
You conveniently cherry pick the states you want (that just happen to have the slimmest margins - gee wonder why you did that 😂). Doesn’t work like that.
Trump won by 77,000 in the states I listed. So, logic dictates that you start the 2020 comparison with those 3 states. This is where Biden won with about 260,000. You then ADD Georgia, Arizona etc to that.
                  It’s all very simple.

                  • @Juan93: Just as you did above. The 77,000 vote margin you mentioned was the combined margin in the 3 slimmest margin states in the 2016 election (PA,MI,WI).

This election the slimmest margin states (AZ,GA,WI) the margin was 43,735 votes.

If you don't understand that 43,735 is a smaller margin than 77,000 then I don't know any other way to explain it to you.

                    • @unity1: !????? What are you not understanding.
Those slim margins need to be added to the 260,000 votes in the 3 states I listed.
I listed them because they’re relevant: they were the 3 states that Trump won by. So, this is where the comparison starts.

How you are this dense, I do not know. This is just embarrassing for you.

** even if he flipped AZ, Georgia AND Wisconsin, Trump still doesn’t get to 270.

                      • @Juan93: He wouldn't need 270 to win. If Trump won AZ, GA and WI both candidates would be tied on 269. It would all then depend on how the Electors cast their vote when they meet on 14/12/2020.

If they all cast their votes as expected, ie for the popular vote winner for their respective states, it would still be a 269 tie.

Then the President would be decided in the House of Representatives where each state delegation gets one vote. The Republicans hold the majority here with 26 (out of 50) state delegations. If the delegations vote according to party lines, then Trump would receive 26 votes which would make him the President.

So as I highlight once again, there are effectively only 43,735 votes between a Biden Presidency and there being a Trump Presidency, making this closer than the 2016 election.

          • @Juan93: His solution is to create a war…and its odds on a lot of people are gonna die

you used to watch fox 24/7 until they threw your boy under the bus now you pretend like you never liked them

    • +8

Since when is not liking Obama pro MAGA, im sure alot of dems also can't stand him, in 8 years he did pretty much nothing but made a point to get one policy through… Obamacare. If you can list another of his achievements, then good on u

      • +5

        Obamacare was an achievement???

  • +8

Thx OP, I do love reading the memoirs of the great leaders. I forever tip my hat to their families ability to maintain any semblance of normal life during these periods of intense scrutiny from the public.

  • +8

Say what u want about him, it’s undeniable his voice was created for speaking to large audiences, like silk

    • +7

He should be called fluffy. Same with Biden. Nice words but no substance :)

      • +9

I mean this is just false, have you even seen his presidential debates and some of the speeches he's given?

He did a great eulogy for John McCain

        • +3

His words sound really nice and compelling but does shit when he gets in. Referring to Obama but Biden will do the same mark my words.

          • +8

@RetroMetro: I mean unless the dems win the Georgia run-offs then GOP will have the senate so yeah.. obviously Biden won't get much done.

Similarly Obama only had congress behind him thr first 2 years of his presidency.

            • +1

@Deals For Days: Ok so why is he saying these thing if he cant guarantee them? I know you are obviously a democrat. So wouldn't you feel annoyed when he cant get these things done even though he said he would? Hence fluffy no substance

            • -1

@Deals For Days: Shut you down bro!

              • +10

@RetroMetro: I mean, no, I just had better things to do than explain US Congress to you. But, here goes I guess…

The president without congress has limited scope for getting things done. They can use executive orders, obviously appoint a cabinet which has some sway on how existing laws are enforced, but can't pass new legislation. So yes, if dems don't get the senate, Biden won't be able to get a huge amount done. But, this won't be his fault… it will be the senate's fault.

Regardless he will be leaps and bounds ahead of Donald Trump, so honestly, he can get little done and I'd still be happier than a second term of the most idiotic, criminal and incompetent president in modern history, trump.

                • @Deals For Days: "But, this won't be his fault… it will be the senate's fault"

Then why is he promising stuff that he cant fulfil?! That is literally fluff talk

                  • +3

@RetroMetro: Err how much wall that Donald Trump promised to built and has been built to this date? He didn’t deliver that as well.

Even the LNP and Labor here cannot deliver all of their promises.

                  • +8

                    @RetroMetro:

                    1. He told the American people what he wanted to work towards
                    2. He did what he could to work towards that vision
                    3. The Republicans used their senate majority to block his vision at every turn

If you still can't figure out who's at fault here, I think your neg vote is warranted. How are you going to keep up with an entire book, when you can't follow the logic of three sentences?

          • +1

@RetroMetro: Still waiting for that wall…

        • Remember when he broke out in song at the eulogy for those poor black people were murdering by that white supremacist, amazing grace…

    • +1

    • I know we criticise them but then we are dummasses ourselves that cant run our country

  • +28

For those actually interested in purchasing, I'm currently reading the book. A few things to note:

-it's quite well written (more so than I would have thought). It begins with some brief touches on his youth and I found the pace to be perfect. the details he includes really do all relate to the journey of his candidacy
    - captures the excitement of running for office very well
-he is, all things considered, very open about his personal life and to his credit I think this makes it a much more compelling read than had it been a run of the mill bio about his presidency

Really enjoying it so far, if you have an interest in US politics it's worth checking out.

    • -4

Is this book a justification of his life?

      • +23

You're everywhere in this thread dude… is it justification for Trump losing bigly?

        • -2

You are also in this thread a fair bit as well me friend.

"is it justification for Trump losing bigly?" im just gonna say how the hell did you link this to trump losing and this book? No relevance!

          Terrible comeback!

@RetroMetro: You might note I actually contributed something related to the deal (my opinion of the book so far)

                    • @baz3189: Listen if there was a book about how to become a "pedo" I would downvote the hell out of it. I hope you would do the same. So I guess that answers your question.

                      • +23

@RetroMetro: I mean you upvoted a post about the bible which links to a church rife with pedophilia. So I guess you wouldn't do that huh.

                        • @baz3189: First of all you are creepy looking at what i do. Secondly you are stereotyping which is almost borderline discrimination. Thirdly i dont support pedos. Done

@RetroMetro: Keep holding that victim card tightly against your chest :)
So your conclusion is that you are claiming Obama is a pedo, hence the downvote?

                      • +8

                        @RetroMetro: Says laters…proceeds to reply 10 mins later 🙄

@veritas_mendax: Haha look i know i said that but these comments are crying out for replies. Also the other guy said he would do the same but he kept on going as well. But ill stop now
