In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency-a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office.

Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune's Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective-the story of one man's bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of "hope and change," and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.

This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Judging by RetroMetro's ozb history, he loves his SkyNews, Trump and christianity books. Dislikes Islamic Museum, Mandarin books and now a book on Obama. No point on arguing with a closed minded person. Don't even bother taking him/her seriously.

          • @Pcosmic: I dont have problems with muslim museums. Wth you talking about šŸ˜…. I would visit their museum to learn about their history ofc not join their religion. Also that Mandarin thing was about the CCP not the language. I have no problem with mandarin So that just shows you made some shit up about me thats not true. Real cool

Also I dont watch sky news šŸ˜…

Barack Obama "the man that can read a teleprompter"
Joe Biden "the man that can't read a teleprompter"

Just wonder, some people here thinking ObamaCare is bad, you do hate our Medicare too and want it to go away? šŸ¤”

    • +1

Obamacare is very different to Medicare.
A lot of middle class families that previously had health insurance suddenly could no longer afford it and they didn't qualify for Obama care so ended up with no coverage. It was a disaster.
I thought the same as you do until I read up on it.

      • I know itā€™s different but isnā€™t it should be the very reason they should just abolish the current system and introduce a system like ours, the UK or Canada instead?
Itā€™s not like they donā€™t have the cash for it either.

    • +1

You cannot compare obamacare to Medicare at all. Americans don't want Medicare because they refuse to pay the tax for it, like most people they dislike taxes. The difference here is he only had one policy which benefited less then 5% of the american population and that was his "achievement" policy… please. 20 million people got healthcare of a country of 350 million! Most wouldn't dare call that an achievement, especially after 8 years in office

If you told me years ago that the Australian bargain directory website where there were many Xiaomi products on its frontpage (oh I miss those cheap Xiaomi earphones) would be cultural battle ground between Jordan Peterson fans Vs Obama fans, I wouldn't believe you.

If you like those cheap Xiaomi earphones, you'll be pleased to know that there's a thriving industry of low priced, high quality audio gear coming out of China. For starters, you might like to check out the Blon BL03, which can be picked up for about $35 delivered. Very well reviewed, they offer absolutely phenomenal value.

    • +3

      Trump got 74million votes.
Us population is ~328 millions (2019 data)

      74/328~~ 22.6%

      • +2

well the republicans did a really good job of denying 100 million plus the vote ….that was an achievement and cost a lot of money, whereas all Obama did was personally authorise the assassination orders every day…

        what chapters that in?

        • +3

@locosam | sorry I clicked reply on the wrong thread
It's estimate that around 65% of eligible voter votes this year, and its around 160 million votes
          Biden got ~80 mil -> ~50%
          Trump got ~74mil -> ~46%
          Other parties got the rest.

It's not a 50/49.9 situation. Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary in 2016 too. He simply got power because of the Electoral College.

      • correction.
not everyone votes in the US like here, so out of the ones that voted, you could say roughly half voted for trump. Maybe a bit less than half after this latest election, but still pretty close to it.

        • +1

voting restrictions make being able to vote difficult, and that's an international fascist policy now.

          • @petry: i honestly think that the americans that didnt vote just looked at who they had as a choice and thought, well, so much for that.

The deal itself is pretty good. $34 bucks for a brand new released book in hardcover is a pretty good deal.

            • +4

@locosam: maybe you should read up on all the changes made by the republicans to voting eligibility instead

    • Trump has had the lowest average approval rating of any president.
His current approval rating sits around 43 percent.

      • Somehow he still crushed Obama's record for votes. Strange world.

        • But that doesn't mean he would've beaten Obama… people turned up both to support Biden and ensure Trump wasn't back, because he was that disliked.

        • Population increases overtime šŸ˜‘, means that naturally, a latter election will almost always have more voters than the previous election.

  • +7

Too many comments about Obamaā€™s politics and not enough about a) the deal or b) the book. Itā€™s a great deal, havenā€™t seen anywhere cheaper.

    • +4

Just because something isn't available elsewhere cheaper doesn't make it a great deal if the inherent value of the product is considered to be less than the price. Plus its the same price at Big W where you can save money by using giftcards purchased at discount so its not even really the best deal available for it imo. https://www.bigw.com.au/product/a-promised-land/p/124537/

      • +7

I think your politics are clouding your judgement of ā€˜valueā€™.

        • +1

Regardless of that it's not a deal since its the same price at bigw and kmart…

    • +1

If America's the promised land why have they destroyed so much of it for money?

    This man has written 4 memoirs…. 4!

He must idolise himself. This is the man responsible for intersectionality; not judging a person by their own individual character and personality but rather by their race and ethnicity, ethnic group. Listen to his latest interview with Charlamane and his excuse for record Hispanic and Latino votes for Trump in 2020.

    • +4

Dude, Trump has published wayyyy more book about himself than Obama.

      • Dude, before being President, Trump was a celebrity šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

        • +4

And? I just pointed out that if you are using the number of memoirs to judge the narcissistic/ self-idolise index then Trump triumphed Obama for sure.

    • Yeah it was pretty nasty. I was shocked

    • Exactly, this Obama is egotistical too. Trump is on another level but that doesn't mean the previous president isn't.

  • +22

Probably going to be an unpopular comment, but man oh man, what is with all the comments here? Seems that this is emblematic of the problems in our politics today. It's become incredibly personal and vitriolic, most of it just shitposting and trying to be funny rather than any substantive policy discussion. Either way, I try to separate out the personalities and people in politics from the actual policies.

FWIW, I've always been interested in politics and have read broadly on US presidents from JFK to Nixon, Reagan to Obama, including autobiographies and biographies, never with the intention of agreeing or disagreeing with them politically, but rather, of getting to know them and understanding the way they viewed the world. I've found that I've learned a lot from reading the words of those I agree with and those I disagree with. Oftentimes, I particularly enjoy reading the words of those I disagree with so that I can have a clearer understanding of why they believe what they do and how they've come to such different views to my own.

Anyway, I hope that regardless of whatever our personal political tendencies are, we can at least appreciate Obama's personal story - growing up poor, not having had much of a chance to know his father, ending up at Columbia and Harvard, to becoming a law professor at Chicago, getting involved in politics as a state Senator, then US Senator, then as President. Despite whatever political agreements/disagreements I have with Obama (and I have mixed), I find his story incredibly inspiring and in all his writings, have found him to be incredibly insightful, intelligent and extremely gifted with words. Nothing to do with his policies.

    • +7

That's what happens when you have people following the mainstream news every day, people don't realise the news networks make their money from negativity, that's what really attracts people to news articles, they are controlling people and manufacturing hate.

There should be fair debates going on, like the Tucker Carlson - Cenk Uygur debate, but there's a certain side that doesn't like to debate; rather they like to censor and cancel, it's outright dangerous.

    • I don't think he was poor. Double income families, university educated parents, flash school. He wasn't living in a trailer park, or a ghetto/slum. Pollies love a good story about doing it tough.

    • -2

so what you do in life has no meaning only what you say? No wonder things are terminal.

      • +1

so what you do in life has no meaning only what you say? No wonder things are terminal.

That's not what I said - my point is that whether I agree or disagree with someone's actions are irrelevant in wanting to learn about them and their story. In other words, people take things (particularly politics) too personally sometimes, whereas I think it's much better if we took a more academic approach to politics. I enjoy studying politics and politicians as a matter of history, not activism.

As an example, you can have whatever personal feelings you want about Henry VIII, but when you learned about him in school, you probably didn't have a strong emotional response one way or another. I am the same towards Obama and modern politicians, even ones I disagree with.

I personally will never understand how people can get so visibly emotional about politics - I personally think it's all just theatre.

        • -1

because people die because of them, which bizarrely you reject along with obviously all actions have consequences….

          • @petry: That's not what I said at all. Actions do have consequences, and that's what happens at the ballot box.

I think you misunderstand my entire point, which is that this is all history. It doesn't matter whether you like or dislike Obama (or any other politician, leader, person…etc.), his presidency is now historical and IMO, we ought to study history. Part of studying history is to read from multiple sources.

Like I said before, I don't view reading a book as a form of activism or to seek validation of my own personal views. I read a book because I am interested in the historical perspective, that's all.

            • -2

@p1 ama: why bother with the self serving delusions of a yank president if you want genuine history?

              • +1

@petry: As someone who studied history at university, anything that happened in the past is history and the first-hand writings are sources. First hand accounts are often biased sources, as is expected, but they tell the story through that individual's view.

I genuinely do not understand how this idea draws out such a visceral response from you. But sure - one sentence snipes from behind a keyboard is genuine discourse, right?

                • +1

@p1 ama: What you are seeing is the usual material coming from that username. Emotionally charged accusations but little actual substance and evidence to intelligently discuss the topic.

                  • @payton: heh pay-ton a personal attack based on what? sad about the loser whining at the head of the yank snake?

                    • @petry: No, just that at times you just didn't convey or explain things clearly, eg this. Other time you said oh just look up Bolivia and Trump administration, like ok I'm supposed to just read those stuff and see what problem you might be referring to.

The one line commenting style works great on protest rallies, but not quite the same on online forums, especially when the other person didn't have any beef with you and just want to know what you're talking about.

                      • +1

@payton: i think your complaining about my clarity is the least of your worries if you attach import to the writings of professional liar making money off spinning their career failures…

                • @p1 ama: it is here….and professional liars offer no insight into anything..

    • One of the core tactics of fascism is to overwhelm people with so much (dis)information and half truths and so many distractions they cat tell, and dont care, what is true.
Or to paraphrase Huxley, never underestimate mankinds infinite appetite for distraction

Yeah, he only became president of the US, as an African American man, within one generation of lynchings and segregation.

Trump is so much greater - he's the only president in history to lose the popular vote, get impeached and then lose re-election. That is true greatness! A tremendous achievement! Only president in history!

US has lost me, the most warped sense of reality in world. I'm with Jacinda Ardern "I don't get America". That said Obama at least has some decency about him, Trump on the other hand probably believes his own lies and his brainless followers gobble it all up. What a sad world we live in… I thought people were more intelligent than that.

The right doesn't censor and cancel like the radical left tries to, let Obama be.

    • -1

Maybe not your right, but their right does.

      • That's funny, I didn't know Parler was on the same level as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Patreon, hell you even have people in senate (AOC) trying to censor the likes of Steven Crowder, lobbying to Youtube to censor right leaning people, interrupting marches with "anti" violent groups, trying to have campus speech's canceled and successfully doing so.

There's a reason these social tech companies are being questioned in senate now, you only need half a brain to figure out who they're censoring en masse the last 5 years.

        • -1

It wasn't about who is on the same level… it's about the right censoring.

          • +1

@colblair: There's a tonne more examples of the radical left doing it, you only need half a brain to realize that, Parler? You're having a laugh.

        • what makes you think the policies of billionaire corporations have anything to do with the left?
Are you that stupid you dont know the left is censored just as hard or harder? or does that not suit your diatribe?

          • @mycosys: I just gave examples above of how the right is being censored, driven by the left in the senate, open your eyes, and still didn't answer my question, why is only one certain group putting questions to social media giants in the senate, and the other group remaining silent? Only takes half a brain to realize why, use it.
