In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency-a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office.

Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune's Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective-the story of one man's bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of "hope and change," and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.

This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

          • @mycosys: G’day, I guess proof is in the pudding aye, Twitter still keeping up that doctored image from China which violates their terms and conditions, like I said, you only need half a brain.

  • +3

    How is this a bargain?

  • +2

With all these comments, the next OzBargain meet up is going to be a hoot during introductions and conversation…

    • +16

Worst part is noticing how Australians are using American terms now as normal. Like “the radical left”. We don’t need this polarising crap here. Move to America please.

      • +3

and take the federal government with them

      • +1

Isn't it a fair description of Extinction Rebellion?

  • +2

It'll be great to hear about this man's war crimes and corruption by selling out the American people.

  • +3

social justice warriors still think he is the innocent black African American guy.

he killed more than people all around the world father and son bush combined.

  • Waiting for volume II comments here

  • +5

Libya was the most prosperous and developed country in Africa. Free healthcare, and when you got married you were given money for a house.

Then Obama and Hillary invaded, murdered Gadaffi and stole their gold. Now the country is destroyed and is a slave trade capital. Many previously happy citizens are now slaves.

At least Trump has stopped the wars, not looking forward to new ones from Biden and the same crew.

    • trumps deposed more democratic governments than any other president - he used corruption because he understands only that…

      • +1

Can you point out your deposed governments? Can you specify your claimed corruption?

        • +1

just look at south america, and read something else besides yank trash

          • @petry: So no then? Be specific.

            • +1

@trevor99: 2 many and if u can't be bothered to read real facts then that's your choice - why not try bolivia as a as a good news start

              • +1

@petry: He stopped the catastrophic Syrian war vs Isis, is now greatly reducing troop numbers there. Stopping the endless wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, bringing his troops home from there. He's withdrawing many troops from Germany and Europe. He prevented looming wars with Iran, North Korea. He is the only recent president to not start new wars. Obama/Biden/Clintons complete opposite.

              • +3

@petry: Petry, you yourself are a fake news vector if you can't back what you write.

                • @BankstownMoeyDW: 'The wheels of justice grind much too slowly in the aftermath of US-backed coups. And the Trump administration’s support has been overt: the White House promoted the “fraud” narrative, and its Orwellian statement following the coup praised it: “Morales’s departure preserves democracy and paves the way for the Bolivian people to have their voices heard.” According to the Los Angeles Times: “Carlos Trujillo, the US ambassador to the OAS, had steered the group’s election-monitoring team to report widespread fraud and pushed the Trump administration to support the ouster of Morales.”

This week Jan Schakowsky and Jesús “Chuy” García of the US Congress recently called for that body to “investigate the role of the OAS in Bolivia over the past year, and ensure that taxpayers’ dollars do not contribute to the overthrow of democratically elected governments, civil conflict, or human rights violations”.'

facts are clear - so is your agenda…

                  • @petry: So elections can be rigged? Interesting.

                    • -3

@trevor99: it worked for trump in bolivia, so he's just working the same angle domestically….corruption is his specialty…

  • +1

Not a bargain. Have you ever seen a political memoir that doesn't end up in the bargain bin within a year or so?

  • +3

Came here for the bargains, and just like the Black Lives Matter post (!)
got more than I bargained for.
All the comments: It’s kinda like a free set of steak knives, but not as useful, and not as sharp

First, Invade other countries, kill millions of their people in the name of security threat and then release a book trying to paint yourself innocent.

    • +5

Even better… when they retaliate, call them terrorists!

      • +2

even better then call terrorists persecuted

      • +2

Even better, hire terrorists to fight your wars and start the biggest terrorist organisation ever.

He should write a book "how to win terrorists and influence them in the 21st century".

        • what trump - the man behind contractors fighting wars on behalf of the yanks? good opportunities for our sas.. babykilling for more money

    • The American Way ™ .

    • Sounds like the Bush father and son.

    • This book is not about Bush though.

  • +6

Guy authorized hundreds of thousands of bombs/drone strikes on the middle east every year for 8 years… Campaigned on transparency, then cracked down on whistleblowers.. did nothing to fix the war on drugs which disproportionately hurts poor/black communities.. he's hardly a saint. Just another scummy politician, but the media loved him. In practice if you could only see policies, he's probably indistinguishable from Bush or Trump or Biden.

    • "In March 2018, Trump revoked an Obama executive order requiring an annual disclosure of civilian deaths resulting from drone strikes. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism also reported that the number of drone strikes ratcheted up during Trump’s first year in office, doubling in Somalia and tripling in Yemen."

Here for the comments, not disappointed

Question: Anyone notice that Trump supporters generally have a certain "look" about them? Just like those covid anti-lockdown protesters. Some would rather live on Centrelink and protest than go get a job

    • +4

Trump voters are disproportionately less educated - I'm not even being mean here, that's a fact and a sad one at that. His presidency and the lies believed by millions around the world are the fruits of failed education systems.

Alternatively - education systems working just the way ring wing polticians want them to.

      • +1

Joe Biden said Hunter was the smartest person he knows, after almost half a century in politics.

        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AtugI30AEjA

Neither side is an educated choice, and voting is not an intelligence test.

        • +4

A father saying his son is the smartest person he knows? That's the best comparison you can make here?

It is absolutely an educated choice - Trump has spun more lies than any administration in US history, undermined confidence in established democratic, military and intelligence communities with baseless accusations, denied science at every possible opportunity, demonised experts while praising conspiracy theorists.

Voting isn't an intelligence test - but the facts are clear, Trump supporters are less educated and its not hard to see why.

          • +1

@poppingtags: What's a "ring wing poltician"? Sounds pretty covfefe to me!

  • +4

  • +8

Let's face it, the world was duped by Obama. Everything he promised to stand for in 2008 such as protection of whistleblowers, ending bush/cheney wars etc turned out to be lie, instead he did the complete opposite. Megalomaniac, just like his predecessor.
Now the world can get ready to eat more war, just the way the dems like it.

    A (profanity) race baiter

  • +5

After many years on OzBargain it's pretty disappointing to see the blatant shitposting going on here. This post should have comments turned off.

  • I'm here for Trumpsters comments.

  • I never read this type of gunk, not now and not in the future.

  • +4

Should be called 8 years of appeasement, race baiting, (profanity) and teleprompter reading. A disgraceful president. Disastrous foreign policy, Iran, North Korea, Libya etc, appeasement of Iran and China. Race baiting and inviting the black supremacist, Marxist BLM to the Whitehouse.

Hillary’s 30,000 emails. Clinton foundation..(she was his Secretary of State) creepy Joe and crackhead son Hunter bought by Beijing (he was Vice President) . Utter corruption, spying on your political opponent. Paying for a made up fake Russia dossier. And on it goes.

    • +3

Username checks out, although you might need to find a new "news" channel to watch given they've abandoned their one term loser

      • truths hurt, don't they?

    • Republican Senate investigations and Trump could not do anything to Clinton, instead of focussing on a fake scandal try focussing on Trump killing 250K+ Americans and asking for help from foreign govts like a petty crook.

  • +2

I don’t see a good president - trump or biden

    • I'm starting to see that the reason for the increasing polarisation in American politics is because both sides are shit in their own way and everyone just see's each other in absolutes. When Trump says something stupid the left thinks all right wing people must support everything he says and when the far left do something stupid the right thinks all left wing people must support everything the far left does. When really Americans are just stuck with two shitty choices and are arguing why a turd is better than a douche and vice versa.

      • "When really Americans are just stuck with two shitty choices and are arguing why a turd is better than a douche and vice versa."

I think that's paraphrasing Team America.

  • +4

trump withdraws all the American troops from all over the world ——> he is racist, he is xenophobic. he is crazy.
obama is by far the most bloodstained American president after the second world war ——> poor innocent black guy, let's give him the nobel peace prize.

    sjw's hypocrisy is unbeatable.

    • +1

Did you ignore his racist statements like Mexicans are rapist or the people chanting "jews will not replace us" as good people?

      • +2

He never said either of those things, he said that there are rapists amongst those coming over the border ILLEGALLY. Look up the stats, something like 2/3 of women coming over the border illegally get raped, as he said someone is doing the raping. Look at context instead of just reading headlines ffs.

        • -1

Did you also ignore Trump attacking Obama over his birth certificate?

Why did he say the people chanting "jew will not replace us" as good people.

Trump has also signed an agreement with the US govt not to discriminate to renters of color after their lawsuit because he blocked black applicants for his apartments.

          • @BuyOrNot: He never specifically said the chanters were good people, he said there were good people on both sides of the protests which their were. he also denounced racists and kkk.

            • -1

              @Dowhatuwant:

he said there were good people on both sides of the protests which their were.

Lol you think people who chant "jews will not replace us" are good people. What is wrong with you?

The Nazi protestors were also violent, one person was killed, why do you think they are good?

You also ignored my other points, why?

              • +1

@BuyOrNot: You think EVERYONE there was chanting that? lol what a bullshit argument you try to push.

                • -1

@Dowhatuwant: Why are you ignoring the other points.

So why didnt Trump say the people doing the chanting are not good people.

Lol What BS argument are you using to defend Nazis?

                  • @BuyOrNot: He did denounce the Racists at the event? He also said there were good people on both sides of the protest which there were, you don't have to be a racist to be against tearing down history and even if there are racists on one side of a protest does not completely invalidate all protestors. You are the perfect example of the victim of fake news, fake news isn't simply about straight up lying its about obfuscating the truth.

                    exact quote:

"You’re changing history. You’re changing culture. And you had people — and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists — because they should be condemned totally. But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists. Okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly.

Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people. But you also had troublemakers, and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets, and with the baseball bats. You had a lot of bad people in the other group."

                    • -1

@Dowhatuwant: lol why are you ignoring the other points.

How are Nazis good people? It was their rally, Nazis are not good people. Cant believe I have to tell you that.

Why are you defending Nazis now just because Trump told you to?

Why did Trump keep attacking Obama over his birth certificate?

Why did Trump also signed an agreement with the US govt not to discriminate to renters of color?

                      • +1

@BuyOrNot: If you're trying to troll you suck at it. I've clearly demonstrated your ignorance and I'm not wasting anymore time on you.

                        • -1

@Dowhatuwant: Hahah, If you are trying to defend a racist you suck at it. I've clearly demonstrated Trump is a racist and your ignorance but I will still waste time to educate you.

When you get your next orders from Trump, tell him to release his tax returns as well, what is he hiding?

Several thousands of people killed by drone strikes under his administration.
Ghastly treatment of whistleblower eg Snowden, Obama refused to pardon Snowden even as the former was leaving the presidency, the massive state surveillance on US citizens and other countries happening on his watch. Left an absolute mess in the middle east.

A race baiter who invited BLM to the White House

"“We can utilize so many tactics. Protest is incredibly important. Policy is incredibly important,” Packnett said. “It was important that there were real protesters in the room today and that this White House has continued to engage with protestors and activists across the country.”"

    • "In March 2018, Trump revoked an Obama executive order requiring an annual disclosure of civilian deaths resulting from drone strikes. While fed up Iranian protestors were being shot on the streets in 2009, Obama and his administration turned their backs on them and preferred to continue dealing with the Islamic State in Iran. He not only refrained from renouncing IRI's brutal crackdowns, arrests, nightmarish tortures, and executions, but he released $150B ($1.7B of which was in cash) under JCPOA to the murderous Islamists in Tehran and IRGC to facilitate getting half a million defiant civilian Syrians in besieged cities massacred by Assad's regime. As long as surviving Iranians, Iraqis, Yemenis, and Syrians draw breath, they will make sure history will judge this beacon of negligence towards human rights in the harshest manner possible. Lest we forget!

    • Cuomo killed them, not trump.

      With COVID, not of covid

      • +2

        You contradicted yourself within seconds.

On the one hand, you say "Cuomo killed them", which implies that his response to COVID (which has major flaws, yes) is to blame for the excess COVID deaths.

On the other hand, you say people are dying "with COVID, not of COVID", meaning that the management of the disease is irrelevant as people are not dying of it.

        What the hell?
