    Free Telstra Air Wi-Fi

    Isn't it always free?

    • +1

      for telstra customers

      • +6

        and Boost customers.

        • Really? How to use it?

          • @evo7: I get a notification on my phone to use it when one is nearby…

        • how to access for boost customers

@[Deactivated]: I just have the Telstra Air app, and it connects.

            • @jv: So we have to install Telstra Air app on the phone?

              • +1

@evo7: Don't know for this deal… But the app notifies me when I'm in range and connects me.

            • @jv: Interesting, so how is the data counted if you are only a Boost customer and not a Telstra broadband customer?

              • @x d: I do have Telstra broadband, but no Telstra mobile, just Boost.

All my Boost phones appear on my Telstra ID.

If you have a Telstra ID and Boost, you should be able to use Telstra Air.

                • @jv: Thanks. Provably won't be free for me as all I have is Boost mobile.

                  • +3

@x d: Boost customer do not get access to Telstra air. You need to be a Telstra customer and have one of their broadband service or mobile service.

      • For all the billions in profits we've given to telstra over the years, it should be free for everyone by now at a 1Mbps speed or whatevers. If some people in society are disadvantaged enough to need this at xmas time to call family or check emails or even just find out what Tik Tok is, then they could be disadvantaged in the same way all year round too.

    What's a payphone?

    • -4

a phone that you pay for.

    • +15

A small cubicle that has a sign that says "Out of Order".

I just looked up as of 2019, mobile calls from payphone is $0.50/10mins. That's pretty good if you don't have a mobile phone and still carry coins around.

      • That’s probably because the average phone call from a payphone lasts less than 15s.

        • But then, people prob prefer texting than speak to one another .

I remember the good old days when we used the straws to make free phone calls from those booths. Enter $2, flatten the straw from one end and shove it into the coin slot to release the coin, repeat few times to get credit and free talk time.

    • +1

Or the sticky tape trick on the payphone card punch holes, remember that one?

      • Oh yeah! forgot about that one hahaha

"Would you like to accept a reverse charge call from 'comepickmeupmum'?"

  • Telstra Air would have been great in 2004. In 2020 and as a shareholder, I'm disappointed they are still bothering…

    • +3

Telstra Air itself might not be a thing for most people
but the bonus Fon network can be useful when you travel to Euro ,Japan or south Korea
Tho this will be post-COVID now

      https://fon.com/maps/

      • I found it very spotty in Japan a few years ago.

      • I got an email about a month ago saying that you're no longer going to be able to access the FON hotspots from March 2021

      • Have not used fon, you better off getting a Sim card overseas avoid with patchy coverage of this Fon network. It's rubbish at best.

I don't enable my Telstra Air as Fon is useless. I'm not sharing my bandwidth nor I are about it

        • Agree that buying a data sim overseas is always the recommended way
but there are times that you run out of data, or having weak / no receptions
and a Fon hotspot can help quite a bit
So I would say for me Fon is just an additional option whenever you need it
and "why not" if its free with Telstra Air anyway (will not pay a penny on it for sure)

    • Yeh would've been a great deal 10 years ago

  • I like how they took away access for Telstra Prepaid Customers and then they go, look how great we are giving it away for free.

  • I tried to use it for ages but most is capped to 100KB/s with high ping.

  • Found it to be incredibly slow all the times I've tried it.. No doubt now even worse with more connections

    • Found it to be incredibly slow all the times I've tried it..

      It varies a lot.

There have been spots in the city where it has been extremely fast, and 100m down the road, slow as a snail.

  • Payphones still exist ?

  • So this only works if you have a current account with Telstra? I suspect it just means that it is for Telstra account users and it doesn't count towards their usage.

  • +1

The neighbours who had Telstra canned it, I used to have it and noticed people were defs using it and ended up disabling Telstra air…

  • -1

Not working with my neighbour wifi, still have to login. Perharps only public hotspot.
