:) I know. But for those looking for a slightly cheaper option, say for kids etc., this may still be worth considering.

      • +16

Jesus… this thing would cost more than my kids laptop by a fair bit! dunno if i'd classify it as a kid option lolll i need to get my kids on to android when the hand me downs or work phones we throw out run out hahahahaha

      • +14

We used to be an iPhone family. This year the kids were sick of getting second hand phones. The ~$200 ZTE and Oppo phones with the large screen and pin-hole display was a huge win for my boys who primarily use the phone for YouTube, AnimeLab and Discord. Camera is rarely if ever used and the screen size is the biggest factor. Plus they were thrilled to have the new phone feeling and the excitement of unboxing the devices.
At this rate I can buy a new phone each year for the kids.
My wife was the last iPhone hold out and will be getting the either the Note 20 Ultra or the Note 21 if it comes out early next year.
PS: Daughter will most probably get my wife's old iPhone X

        • +13

That iPhone X is the best in your family.

          • +13

@BargainSnatcher: Far from it. I have the S20 which I got at launch for $600 (staff pricing). The S20 beats the iPhone X hands down and I just compared the S20 Ultra with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and don't feel the iPhone premium is worth it.
The iPhones were great when the most premium phone in the iPhone 4/5/6/7 era cost under $950. Not anymore.
I know Samsung has premium prices but you can always get them for a lot lower since resellers keep a higher markup on these compared to iPhones and have room to discount them (case in point the new S20 Note Ultra at HN for $1440 down from $1800).

PS I do have a soft spot for Apple and have many Apple devices at home incl M1 MacBook Pro, Intel MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, iPad mini, Apple TV, Apple Watches. However I am a card carrying ozbargainer too so I spend hours and days comparing these before deciding.

At a lower price point than the iPhone XR, the Samsung A51 for $499 will run rings around it with a beautiful large screen OLED display, smaller, lighter, faster, 5G, on-screen fingerprint reader (works with masks hey) https://www.samsung.com/au/smartphones/galaxy-a/galaxy-a51-b…

            • -1

@merill: I got the S20 FE for $550 at launch using the JB Hi-Fi Telstra deal. This more than runs rings around an XR.

          • +17

@Fabio08: wait what? you give your brand new phone to your kids and take their hand me down? unless they are paying the bills and the mortgage for you…

            note: not a neg from me… :)

            • -4

@scud70: The kids know more than the parents with phones and that’s saying something.

              • +3

@BargainSnatcher: unfortunately for my kids that is unlikely to be the case in this house hold .. not for a long long time anyway lol

          • +3

            @Fabio08: 😅

Missus got one from her office so didn’t have a choice. We like to keep our phones for 4-5 years if possible before upgrading. I’ve got an X from the day of the launch and pretty happy with it.

One son has a Samsung S7 from a few years ago and the other one just got a Pixel 4a 5G. All phones are new, and should last them a few years.

And even if kids get hands-me-down, nothing wrong with it. :)

        • When I saw the x at the end, why did I think for a second that you’re sending kisses to us? 😂

      • +6

In what universe is this relegated to being predominantly for kids, what a bizarre notion.

    • +2

      BargainSnatcher - True that!

    • You're going to have to define misinformed in this case, your logic could equally apply to cheaper option androids as well. Pretty rude thing to say.

    • +1

iPhone is for the computer illiterate.
      Please defend your beloved.

  • +1

    128gb also on sale

  • +6

Good price for a still good iOS device

  • +1

    Good price.

  • Only if it was iPhone 11 128 GB as it’s a much better phone compared to iPhone XR. Hopefully iPhone 11 Pro series comes on sale soon.

    • My brother got an iPhone 11 for $700 refurbished. Much better value than buying an XR new.

      • Apple refurbished? How?

        • +2

Probably Kogan or one of the domestic mobile shops in AU ,though I wish Apple offered refurbished Iphones like they do in the states.

        • See above

  • +5

If you can put up with the screen and battery, the SE will be much faster and likely have longer support.

    • +1

SE is so much uglier though and no face id

      • +6

no face id, that's the point. FTW!
        touch ID rules.

        • lol, you may be stuck in 2012, i couldnt care less.
Face id is boss, how the phone reveals your notifications when it recognizes your face is pure magic
Touch id is useless nowadays, wake me up when they do it under screen like other phones

          • +4

            @nikoris:

            Touch id is useless nowadays

How exactly is it useless? Its use is to unlock the phone with a finger - which it does.

          • +3

@nikoris: Yeah I still use it everyday on my 6S plus to unlock the screen, login with saved passwords etc. how is it useless?

            • @wtfnodeal: By nowadays I meant for a new phone. Excuse my English.
For me, Face ID is so much better.

              • +1

@nikoris: Face ID is very convenient for unlocking the screen but to me it doesn’t mean Touch ID is useless. I in fact prefer using Touch ID for all my website saved login passwords and making purchases.

                • @wtfnodeal: You can do it with Face ID as well. I don’t understand why you mention ‘passwords’ and ‘purchases’

                  • @nikoris: Didn’t you know you could save passwords for website logins and add credit cards to digital wallet/ Apple Pay and later use Touch ID to login and pay?

                    • @wtfnodeal: You can do this literally everywhere, even in android phones or tablets or windows computers, how is this an argument for touch id? lmfao you can do this with face id as well, of course

                      • @nikoris: So touch ID isnt useless then? Just that you prefer face ID.

                        • @wtfnodeal: Lol are you trolling or what?

                          • @nikoris: I am trolling about Touch ID isn’t useless instead of you trolling about Touch ID is useless? Haha yeah whatever makes you feel happy.

                            • +1

@wtfnodeal: Samsung phones have both face ID and in screen touch ID to prevent these types of arguments 😂

  • Might be able to PC at officeworks, although stock levels seem quite low (inner SE Melb)

  • is this better than se2 ?

  • +6

SE for $679 seems like a better buy.

    • Agree, unless you’re looking for a bigger screen and battery!

      • I'm in this boat. We've gotten mum a SE for Christmas but I might return it and get the XR for a similar price. She mainly wants the bigger screen for watching videos.

      • XR also has face detection - the SE does not.

  • Is the battery life of this as insane as the 11 pro?
My mate has an 11 Pro and the screen on time is out of this world.

    • No.

    • +8

I have the 11 pro. The 11 pro has so much battery that it charges the charger instead.

  • +1

I'm tempted to go for 128GB XR from my V30. Nothing wrong with the V30, just over android quirks, specially with android auto.

However, no ultrawide camera though :(

    • and no headphone jack, don't do it :)

      • +1

It not a happy decision, I can assure you :) The DAC on the v30 is sensational! It just android auto & youtube music that let the phone down. However, I think I've found a fix for it.

        • thats a fair point, got a google pixel 4a5g and was hyped cause it had a headphone jack only to realise there was only a youtube music app lol. Do you have any good app replacement recommendations?

    • Does it have portrait mode? Like it was a feature in plus models.

Edit: Can confirm it has portrait mode. Does it come with a wireless charger?

      • +1

Yes it does but only a limited range of portrait settings
From the specs: Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control
Portrait Lighting with three effects (Natural, Studio, Contour)

  • iPhone “R (iPhone 10 & 11 R)” models aren’t appealing to me, it’s bulky and heavy, the bezel & ‘notch cut out body to screen ratio ‘percentage is much more bigger than the premium X & Max models. The resolution looks like a 360p/480p display stretched into a 720p screen when you look carefully compared to oled display.. Speed & Battery life is the only good thing if you’re looking for a power bank.

    • 100% this display is a dealbreaker to anybody used to an iPhone with the OLED display

    • +3

There’s only one ‘R’ iPhone and that’s the XR. The 11 looks like an XR and shares the same screen though so your points are still valid. I’m quite picky with my screens but must say the XR looks pretty good to me.

      • +1

Agree, I’m using 12pro but my XR was still great in terms of screen quality. Definitely good value at this price.

    • +4

The sub-pixel density of the iPhone XR/11 is the same as the OLED iPhones. The difference isn’t anywhere near as big as the spec sheet would have you believe.

    • +1

The resolution looks like a 360p/480p display stretched into a 720p screen when you look carefully compared to oled display.

“When you look carefully” are the key words. I spent a long time comparing the screens on the 11 (326ppi) and 12 (476ppi) and although the 12 has a higher resolution, higher pixel density and higher contrast, the differences are quite subtle unless you’re doing a direct side-by-side comparison looking for differences. The LCD of the XR and the 11 is a high quality screen and perfectly adequate for most people.

      • +1

Even though I have a 12 with an OLED screen I have to agree. The LCD in the older phones are actually pretty good quality.

  • iPhone 11 was $$890 few weeks back
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/580282

  • Fantastic price for a terrific iPhone

  • What’s better SE or XR?

    • +1

SE in every way except for screen to body ratio, and battery life.

      • -3

        So not at all?

  • +7

iPhone XR is still an amazing phone! I upgraded to iPhone 12 and gave my Xr to my husband. Besides the size and the screen/camera quality being a bit better I can honestly say there is no much difference in terms of performance. My husband had an iPhone 7+ and is loving the Xr now

  • Anyone having issues trying to order this? Says I've gotten two cancelations within minutes of ordering even though all my details are correct.

edit: Same thing different payment method. "Unfortunately your order XXXXXXXX placed on 24 Dec 2020 has not passed our verification process so it has been cancelled."

  • Bought the xr when it was just out…. misses got the iphone 8…. much better camera on the 8 so wouldnt recomand xr

    • +1

They share the same camera but the A12 on the XR should mean it makes the better pics out of the two. Unless your other half had an 8 Plus (with the telephoto lens).

  • +1

I don't think the iPhone 11 is worth $300 extra. I will save the $300 , use the new XR then in 2 years put the 300 to a cheap iPhone 12 for around 600.

    • Agree, the iPhone 12 is a much better step up with that insane processor, magsafe (if you care), and OLED higher DPI/res screen.

      • The iPhone 11 was a bigger upgrade in terms of camera and much improved processor IMO. The 12 has a more modern and compact design and a better display and a slightly better processor. I would only recommend the XR (at this price) if you don’t care much about photography, otherwise get the SE or pay more for the 11.

  • +2

I got iPhone se for $600 at JB hi Fi indooroopility. Price match with ozmobiles, and buy gift card 5% off.

  • Anyone know where i can purchase a brand new Iphone XS? Seems like after discontinuation its only refurbs.

    • Mobileciti has the 512gb, but it is $1,399

      • Ahh thank you. Btw I've never done business with them as i normally dont buy from third parties, but are they trustworthy? Those sites kinda seems iffy ahaha or maybe its me

  • Estimated delivery 1 FEB….

    • However I ordered a 128gb Coral on 25 Dec and it’s now awaiting pickup by Toll from JB’s warehouse - so delivery is a lot better than they stated

  • OW pricematches online deals right?

    • +1

Yes, they should. This deal is online as well as instore in any case.

      • Actually, someone just rightly pointed out that this deal is online only. Still, it should work for OW price beat.

  • +2

This is actually a very reasonable price for a still perfectly usable iPhone.

  • +3

SE 2020 is the best value but if you want bigger form factor and Face ID on a budget this will do you right.
Of course if you can pickup a X(s) for a similar price go for it but I don’t think it’s possible

  • +1

Terrible deal in my opinion. Sure the price is great but how is this of use when it isn't available in store and delivery is Feb 1. Really dissapointing.

    • +1

If you pay the 5.00 shipping delivery is before 20 Jan.

      • Ours show as shipped already and we picked the cheap shipping as we didn't want to pay $1 extra to get it early.

        • Same here - I ordered a 128gb Coral on 25 Dec and it’s now awaiting pickup by Toll from JB’s warehouse - so delivery is a lot better than they stated

  • +1

Still using an XR 128gb, going 3yo. Still can’t fault this phone and no reason to upgrade at all with 89% battery health. Gotta say bye though when fold 3 comes out 😁

    • Xr’s camera is quite bad XD

  • +1

Not sure this is a deal when the SE exists and has a better processor etc and will get supported longer.

    • not with the battery life though which is very crucial :)

    • +1

It may be an option for those who prefer a bigger screen for about the same price.

  • not a bad deal… can still get software updates until 2023… works out to be $233 per year. but wanting to wait for a deal on the 11 as its a significant improvement in battery life.
