Good hack. I wonder if it works for WA as well. I went straight Euro plate few years ago :(

    • +13

Hope you don't want to advertise for ANKER.

      • Too late, there is already one of those out on the WA roads (on a Mercedes Benz C class if I remember correctly)… Saw it a couple of months back.

    is V1491N taken?

    • +68

yes, it is, but you could still go for V461N4

      • Hahahahahahahahahahahaahahahaha

      • something gives me the feeling thats not going to happen…

        • +8

If it's a guy approving it, he'll let it slide lol

        • -1

Funny, my wife said the same thing to me last night..

      • -1

        or a V6u554 haha

    • +8

      Sorry, what is V1491N?

      • +5

        "virgin"

        • +15

          How is 4 R …

          • @bobzor: And 9, G?

          • +8

@bobzor: it's not, it comes out to Viagin

if you type Viagin on google, it will say did you mean "Virgin"

            pretty obvious

          • +1

@bobzor: I have been a neckbeard from back before the narwhal even baconed, and I can confirm that 4 is leet speak for ‘A’ and ‘A’ only.

            • +3

@ripoffmerchant: Correct. I can confirm it whilst bhopping around de_dust 1.6 with my eyes closed

  • +26

Ready for the downvotes but…… why? I kinda understand personal plates, at least the ones that appear to say something as opposed to some which appear to be a very inside joke - but why the euro plates ? just to make your euro car look more euro ? I just dont understand :)

    • +20

Well yes exactly that… The same could be said for many things where people are enthusiasts of a topic.
Some women spending $2500+ on Louboutin shoes when they could just spend $50 and the purpose is the same.

      • +3

That is just financial hit, self inflicted, nobody to blame but yourself.

Yes. Custom plates are an inside joke. On the buyer. I'd rather have a hard to remember random plates at least in that case it is harder to track you down.

        • +2

          What are you hiding from?

      • +1

That's oddly specific example you got there, poor fellow

        • +2

Haha, well i could of said "Buying a $2000 Phone when a $300 makes the same call" but i know alot of people get touchy on tech,

    • +25

      To flex on poor people.

      • +11

I never even knew about this. Are these euro plates well known amongst the general population? If not then are purchasers flexing on people who have no idea they are being flexed on?

      • +1

poors wouldn't care about a number plate.

      • lol nobody is flexing with a euro plate. The only way to flex with a plate is with a numeral below 285-000

    • +16

it’s a size thing. the bigger the plate, the smaller the dick.

      • +2

Save money on Euro plates and get a surgical extension to match the plates. Be of service not just to yourself but your partners too.

      • +5

        Can confirm, have tiny dick

    • +4

The euro plates format (with the leading v) opens up a set of combinations that have previously been taken. For example if you really wanted OZBAR (bad example) you could get 'V OZBAR' instead

      • +2

        V SLOW2

        V POOR2

Someone willing to pay I'll take it.

    • +14

Yeah everybody should drive a white Camry too.

      • +2

        Secret billionaire.

    • +11

The plates fill the space better on a euro car? Euros plates are longer, so the euro plate fits nicer.
      example of bad fitment
      nice fitting euro plates
Japanese cars are the opposite - they used to be made with number plate openings too small for aussie plates see example bent to fit.

      • +4

I once saw a skyline with euro plates.

You can imagine how that looked.

    • +1

      Mad men

    • +1

Because…. the people that drive them think they are fancy. It’s quite silly, indeed. I wonder if Hanz in Berlin is rolling around with Aussie plates…

    • +3

      V FUNNY

    • +2

Some Euro cars (like my Megane rs280) have a euro plate sized plastic thing at the front of the car. With a non-Euro plate, it looks odd…..IMO

    • +2

      Why anything in life?

  • -5

This is wrong and does not work

If you try and buy plates starting with a V it forces you to buy euro style plates

you also can not restyle plates with a V at start as number plates that are V followed by 5 numbers can ONLY be Euro
(same as you can not get personal plates with an M as these are restricted to government vehicles)

    • +2

It works for me. I only tried with letters though

      • +3

So it seems I stand corrected.

If you want numbers it forces you to buy Euro

if you go V plus 5 letters you hack works

and i am too late to reneg my - vote :(

        • +1

VIIO60 works as well, so some numbers allowed

        • There's a way to revoke your negative, someone smarter than me will tell you how or you can try figure it out

          ETA see here
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/65575

"…, you can just hit the votes tab on the deal, then hit the revoke button."

        • No you're not, you can revoke at any time. Go to the votes tab up top

  • Just curios, if the plate is linked to your car, do yuo loose that plate when you sell it, or can you transfer it to your new car without having to pay again for it?

    • +3

you can put standard plates on the car when you sell and "HOLD" your personal ones,
set of standard plates is like $30
When you put them on a new car (in vic) there is a fee .. from memory its like $150

      • buy car from dealer then swap plate (no fee).

        • every single time i have bought a car and transferred plates.. the dealer has charged the fee

          (new and used cars)

          • @jimbobaus: do it yourself :)

            • @0PriceJack0: Oh i have just re-read your post :)
i read and replied too fast lol

              • @jimbobaus: my dealer charged 200 to put my custom plate on my new car. so I do it myself. all you need to do is call Vic road after u put it on and let your insurance knows your new plate (free of charge)

                • +4

@0PriceJack0: Vic Roads will charge you a plate reassignment fee if its been on another car though

$128.40 according to the vic roads website

                  • @jimbobaus: Oh forgot about that one too

                  • +2

@jimbobaus: Of course there's a fee. For them doing absolutely nothing, involving no work and it being entirely automated.

                    • +1

@ctg: Someone has to pay for that automation

    • +1

You can transfer it or 'store' for later use. But you need to let Vic roads know

    • +1

You own the plates, so you can do what you want with them, but a fee is required to transfer them to another car.

    • *lose

    • Be aware that if you write your car off in an accident, you lose the plates.

Edit: Perhaps I'm mistaken? Seems like I missed the opportunity to transfer my plates…

  • +24

My neighbours name is Agina. Should she get some?

    • +1

      Perfect plate for her.

    • +4

      She's getting plenty.

      • They have a list of offensive words. i wonder if the word is on the list.

        • +1

          Why would it be offensive?

          Unless it's a smelly one I guess.

    • Does she have a heart condition?

  • -5

Personalised plate prices have a one-off fee of $180. Custom plates are $200 per year for 1-6 characters and $255 per year for 7 characters.20 Mar 2018

    • +6

      Not in Victoria 😉

      • +2

cheaper rego, no extra charge yearly for custom player

everything is coming up Victoria !

      • +1

        snap lockdown
everything is not coming up Victoria!

    • +1

      7 characters

What is this heresy you speak of.

  • +7

Doesn't every car already have a personalised number plate?

    • So true and unique

    • +11

      It's unique, but not personalised.

      • -2

Rare, not unique. Unique refers to there only being one of something.

    • +22

Yeah I found it way cheaper to just change my name to ABX744. My loved ones struggled with the change but my car is just the way I want it now.

      • +4

        How very Elon of you

      • +2

        White Isuzu kinda guy eh?

  • Question.

Say my current plate is Abc456. If i change to this plate, does it mean my rego will be Vabc456 ?

    • No, there is still a 6 character limit. So V followed by up to 5 characters

    • +1

Say your plate is actually Abc456, that's worth keeping as is!

  • No cashback/cash rewards :(

  • +4

Dont use LGOPNR may get you in trouble

    • When I first saw that i actually thought it was to do with cricket…

    • +2

      V GOPNR then
