Bonus 120,000 Rewards Plus Points with New Platinum Credit Card ($3000 Spend in 90 Days Required, $0 Fee First Year) @ HSBC

1717

Edit: Multiple users have reported that this is a targeted offer for existing HSBC customers. You need to have received an invitation e-mail and apply for a new Platinum Credit Card to qualify.

New HSBC customers can choose between no interest balance transfer for 26 months (1% transfer fee applies) and $0 annual fee for the first year, or 84,000 Rewards Plus points but no annual fee waiver.

Update: based on comments, looks like HSBC may be claiming this deal is targeted.
If it helps, here's a screenshot of the email I received - https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/216608/86881/hsbc_excl…
Aside from the subject line saying "Exclusive" and the body addressing "Dear [my name]", there's nothing in the T&Cs saying exclusively to email recipient.
Apply at your own risk and take screenshots every step of the way - enjoy!

Just got an email from HSBC - seems like a decent churner. Also comes w two airport passes which hopefully can be used

No lounge in Perth, I am out.

      • Are you allowed to bring a guest to a lounge?

  • Looks nice thanks OP.
Much easier than the CBA one I am waiting for.
    Damn hope this stays available.

Although I have a HSBC Premier MasterCard, doesn't seem to make me ineligible

    • Doubt it…I wish the same 2
The 120,000 bonus Rewards Plus Points will be credited to your Rewards Plus Account within 60 days of meeting the spend criteria, provided that your account is active and not in arrears. Offer is limited to new applicants only. Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held any Rewards Plus card types within the last 12 months are ineligible for this offer. Not available in conjunction with any other offer. Gift Card values correct as 11 January 2021.

      • if you have the premier with qantas points and open this as a new card you should be eligible?

    • On a side note, how do you find HSBC Premier? Do they significantly reduce the Home Loan yearly fee of $600ish (if you have one). I've considered signing up but the $35 a month is a hard sell, though if the Home Loan fee is cut in half this would almost even it out and potentially make it worth it for me.

      • They have got rid of the $35 month fee starting Dec 2020. If you deposit $9000 per month into your Global cash management account you could be eligible or take an homeloan. You can transfer in and out $9000 and it will still count.

      • hmm, never had any monthly fee…probably cuz I owe them an arm and a leg…
think the loan fee is also offsetted but loans been in place for quite a few years

  • Have HSBC global debit account, no cc. So, still eligible, right?

    • Yeah I have that debit card 2% cash back… they emailed me twice about this offer so I'm guessing check your email?

Also worth $600 cashback at the current conversion rate of 20,000 points per $100

    • what is that Drake ?

    • +2

Correct, I generally use the cashback rather than the gift cards. Much better rate of return on points.

      • How do you compute that??

        Cheers

        • +1

For 120,000 points you can either get a $500 gift card which you can spend somewhere. Or I can get $600 cashback, which basically means $600 is credited back onto my credit card.

  • is this better compare with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/603307 75,000 Bonus Qantas Points with $2500 Spend/3 Mths on the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum ($0 Annual Fee 1st Year) @ Point Hacks

    • +2

Personally i prefer collecting qantas points as outside covid flying is a big thing, although can't apply for it as still in my cool off period.

However getting a $600 cashback saving would be fairly significant and you'd be able to redeem instantly.

      • i dont need QFF (but i still like to fly). so yeah, will apply HSBC tonight hopefully get one
too bad with ANZ im sure 99% will get approved

  • +3

With facial and ID recognition too.

    • +3

"NOW GIVE A BIG SMILE". Now when they have a data breach in the future not only will your face be leaked, your smiling face will be leaked.

    • It doesn't work well. I was required to attend a post office to confirm my identity.

  • Can I still get bonus points if I do a balance transfer and spend another 3k.

  • -3

Seems like a decent deal. $500 gift card plus $500 worth of points in gift cards (or $600 in cashback)

    Am I missing anything?

    • +13

      Missing to read properly

    • +2

Yes, you're missing something… You get 120,000 points, which is worth a $500 gift card or $600 cashback. There's no extra gift cards on top of that.

      • +1

Then why would anyone choose 500 giftcard rather than 600 cash back?

    • +1

      My mistake

  • +3

Is there a way to use this card to buy crypto which would count for the $3k?

What's the best way to reach the $3k spending excluding day to day things like food, fuel, utilities etc. With no loss. $3k of Visa gift cards?

    • Nah Crypto is charged as a cash advance. I’ve tried it by topping up on Binance.

    • +1

Gift Cards, Prepay your utility bills (electricity, water, internet, phone), Pay your ATO tax, Council fees/Strata if applicable.

If all else fails, make a huge purchase and return it.

      • most will say BPAY equivalent is not valid so basically every single bills? (even mobile phone, gas) ?
most will say payment to goverment is no no (ato, council)

        • +1

Well, you can pay on the card (i.e. using the card's numbers) instead of BPAY.

Buying gift cards is also an option.

      • Becareful, some cc companies do not count payment to government (bills, fines, etc.) as eligible purchases.

    • I have paid for etoro to buy crypto using my combank credit card without issue.

  • I got the grandfathered $0 per annum fee for my platinum card.

    • +1

Yeah, we don't get the lounge pass or the entertainment extra though.

But free for life at least

      • If I recall correctly. Some people got the lounge pass plus annual fee waived each year if you spent over $6,000 or $10,000. I can't remember off the top of my head how much you had to spend but it was offered most of last year.

        • Ah yeh you are correct. But I got mine without a minimum spend.

      • I kept it because it was good back then when JBs does this interest free period with zero fees, as long as minimum monthly repayment are made. But these days, JBs might still able to do it, if you asked though.

Doesn't seem like there is any facility to convert to airline miles. Only for Premier Rewards which this isn't.

    • I am Interested to know if the points can be converted to airline miles (eg Krisflyer).

      • I looked at their HSBC points plus rewards and it looks like 10000 reward points can be transferred to 5000 krisflyer miles

  • Can you convert HSBC rewards points to Qantas FF points and if so what's the conversion rate?

From a quick search it doesn't appear that you can but would love to told otherwise! just got my points from previous NAB offer :)

    • +2

No you can't, You can transfer to Velocity or KF.

Velocity transfer rate is 2 HSBC to 1 Velocity.

      • Do you have the conversion rate for Krisflyer?

        • According to AFF forum and also Finder.com.au the transfer rate is also 2 to 1 which makes this one of the best ways to earn KF. I'd probably still opt to transfer to Velocity or at least wait until international travel is guaranteed.

      • +1

isn't it Premier Rewards that has that, as opposed to Rewards Plus (this one) ?

    • +2

You can only convert to Asia Miles or KrisFlyer when you have the HSBC Premier card. The Platinum card only offers gift cards and cashback.

      • Oh really but isn’t it still the same rewards point?

  • Anyone familiar with the reward points and ineligible transactions?
States 'a fee or charge, including a government fee or charge' and BPAY are ineligible.
Wondering about rates, utilities bills etc.

    • BPAY is an electronic bill payment system in Australia
yeah goverment and bpay are no no

  • +10

HSBC have the worst app and online banking.

    • +1

      totally agrree

    • It's so bad!! And their lack of branches too!!

    • I disagree. Virgin Money's app is terrible by comparison. HSBC's app has improved with the recent update.

    • And customer service…I was trying to request for new statements without needing to wait till the auto generate date - the filo lady just would not understand me in any way!!

      • I was able to do this through live chat. Although it only gets generated overnight lol.

  • +2

Well this is definitely one of the worst application systems I've ever used - lost the entire thing the first time around despite pressing the 'Save and Continue' button at each page, and now the ID verification service won't recognise my camera. Or offer an alternative means of uploading a photo ID, because why have a backup when things fail right?

    • +1

need to upload photo id ? wow thats a first usually just income or bank statement

      • +2

They want multiple real-time photos of your face and side of face. Like a police lineup.

      • I'm happy to upload it. I'm not happy when the photo capture technology keeps telling me the image isn't readable despite it absolutely being readable, and the facial recognition software doesn't load on the mobile site, and there's no readily obvious means of providing them with this information…

        • great album

        • Couldn't agree more. I also had to apply 2x because they lost it the first time.
Then at the facial recognition part, they didn't support my browser (firefox).
I enabled Chrome again, and it only lets me use the selfie cam, with no preview, and can't focus on the license.

I'm giving up / letting this one go.
I'm an existing customer with the 2% cashback card and can tell you, it doesn't get any better once you're using their paranoid banking app/website.

    • The best bit is that their crappy OCR software reads the licence and then asks you to confirm and edit if required. The OCR adds a random 7 at the end of my licence no, that isn’t there, and you can’t edit it. Perfectly clear high res photo with no shadows or glare. Start process again. 7 still there next time… and the next. After 3 goes, f*** it, just submit with the extra 7 and they can work it out!

Is this offer open to everyone ? I had chat with support team and they said only 84000 points offer available to me. Pls confirm if anyone has any further info

    • I had the same answer from the credit card support team when I called them. And they pointed me to this URL where we can choose either 84000 points or balance transfer for 26 months.
      https://www.hsbc.com.au/credit-cards/products/platinum/balan…

      • Yeah looks like this is targeted but not sure

    • how did you do that? you have an account with them?

    • Campaign offer is only for existing HSBC customers as confirmed by Live Chat. I'm not!
Totally agree that facial recognition sucks — but a blessing in disguise as my application didn't go through. What a waste of time!

    • Thanks for the warning, i've have the hsbc transaction account but never received this email.

  • Can the 120,000 be converted to QFF points?

  • -1

will city council fee and electricity & gas charge count the $3K spending?

  • Their web portal is trash. Cant income verify.

    • Agree. Won’t allow me to upload a 800k PDF bank statement…
Seems they have tried to go too high tech with facial scanning etc, and failed the basics in the process

    • Indeed; the thing that logs into your bank account is offline, while the manual payslip upload goes straight to a 'session timed out'

  • what will happen if close the card after 3 months? also what's the next year card fee?

  • This offer might be targeted.

    • How ? It is in their main website right ?

      • nope. the one on main website not 120,000k points but less
