Sff can fit a low profile graphics card. 1050ti or 1650

    G1 SFF can fit 2 x 3.5 HDD" and 1 x 2.5" SSD together
    9020 sff can ony fit 1 x 3.5 HDD" and 1 x 2.5" SSD together

I use G1 SFF for my main machine cos I'm poor

Just want to get the FAQ out of the way :)

    • You can also transfer insides of HP into a new case so you can fit bigger gpus. I made a cheap htpc out of it and got a HP atx power supply for $20

I am still using full tower i7 4790 with 24GB Ram, SSD, 1060 3GB, still OK to play 1080p games.

Pretty good prices for what you get. More storage is easy enough but the RAM is probably a bit more expensive now for these boards. Still using my 4770K and no real need to replace it anytime soon.

  • Would I be able to run 2x displays 2560x1440@60 comfortably on this? (I don't game)

Purchased one of these last year for a work PC for the wife, but with better specs for cheaper.

A quick search on ebay and you can find:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-Intel-Cor…

Comes with a 120GB SSD but for the $50 difference you can buy more storage if required.

You can put in a larger card with a PCIe riser, just make sure to mount it somewhere firmly and with good ventilation

I brought one of these late 2017 for $160 with a new Dell KB522 combo, they're getting too popular arrgh.

    It had 8GB ram, 500HDD, i5 2500.

Yeah I got a Gigabyte 1050ti LP for $220 at Austin computers that runs fine on the stock 240watt bronze PSU.

I also brought an 860 evo SSD new.

I got an additional 8gb ram for $60 second hand

I ran 5 screens although I could have run 6. 4 off the GPU and 2 off the integrated

It plays just about everything still, sometimes on low, but I ran in 3840x1024 (3 Dell 1908fp monitors), 1080p is best. With a machine like this, running windows in performance mode and clearing out services and xbox game bar and all that is a great idea, making sure you don't have rubbish in the background can mean a system idle of 4-6% cpu usage rather than 30%, you want all the cpu time for the fps.

It's an excellent machine that holds up, if you're using it for games take the door off and buy one of those $10 USB fans to face the gpu and cpu heatsink, then the machine won't sound like a hairdryer under max load, but it will run fine with the door on if you prefer.

I had this running in the garage with no AC 38-40 degrees on some perth summer days playing PUB G in ultrawide all day, with 3 floor stand fans from bunnings for $13 each going around the room to circulate air.

The machine still runs today, but a friend uses it. I got a 9020MT i7 4790 with a 1080Ti that I managed to scrape into it.

Is it possible to get one without the SSD?

Would this be good for general Web surfing watching YouTube and Facebook?

    • +3

      Yes its perfect for it

      • +1

Is it worth upgrading the ram?

        • +2

No, 8GB is more than enough for your purpose.

    • +1

Totally fine for that and I also use mine as a plex server. It will basically do most things except modern gaming/ crypto mining, video editing, etc.

  • Doesn't explain how they refurbish the PCs. I also bought exact same one for $170 with 480gb SSD.

These are good cheap boxes but they are starting to age. If you can spend a bit more and what the ability to upgrade more in the future I'd consider looking at more recent hardware, which is gradually coming into the 2nd hand market.

    Just comparing CPUs.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-4770-vs-Intel-…

Alternatively use this to motivate your purchase, the i7 still holds itself against modern CPUs but memory is comparable expensive for this older hardware

  • I think it's a bit overpriced.

    4570 CPU released in 2013

240GB SSD is like $40 (wd green)

    whats the big deal here

maybe if it was i7 for this price would be mildly reasonable

    meh

    have a nice day

You can't calculate the price on a depreciation schedule. It is supply and demand.
Plenty of supply from offices, and plenty of demand as these are high-quality machines.

      • -2

depreciation schedule? is that a fancy word for old junk?

it's just old crap getting recycled for profit
