      I bought the Acer Siwft 3x (i5 with 8gb ram) last weekend. I found that the new tigerlake cpu can run encoding tasks really well - I was able to use it to stream 1080p content using OBS without even breaking a sweat. I think it was due to the intel iris Xe (+Max) working well together with the CPU.

      *I should add that I got my 3x when it was priced at $798 last weekend.

      It depends on your use really. If you need a well built machine and wouldn't need to do anything other than your usual office tasks and/or web browsing then I'd go for this XPS. Dell for build quality for sure.

      If you're after a fairly good built machine (I was surprised how well this 3x is built considering the price and comparing it to others within the $800-1000 price range) and need a bit of media/content creation on the go, I'd say the 3x is a no brainer.

        I wouldn't get hung up on the performance. You're not buying these for performance. Even an entry level last gen Ryzen will beat the snot out of both of these chips for encoding tasks. You're buying the XPS for the rest of the laptop

          The Swift 3X is something of an encoding specialist, where programs that can use Intel DeepLink will utilise both the XE iGPU and the XE MAX dGPU simultaneously.

      Trade off legendary Dell XPS for 11th gen Intel processor and 4GB XE max graphics.

      Yes. Lightweight and good display for 1080p movie streaming / watching. Battery is actually pretty good, has a 4-Cell, 52 WHr, Integrated battery, coupled with a 13" screen should last a day of general use.

      I agree 8GB would be the minimum these days, but saying Chrome would use all 8GB is just not true and perpetuates poor information. Enterprises have been running 8GB since well after Win10 came out.. Like I say, it wouldn't suit everyone, but it is not redundant

      It's true that web browsing uses a lot more memory than it used to, but that's only partially the fault of browsers and more a reflection of the way web design has gone — practically every website is now laden with first and third party scripts, libraries, autoplay videos etc…Blocking extraneous elements on nytimes.com reduces the pages memory usage by more than half, for example.

        I am not a big fan of xps, I have seen a lot of them in repair

        I usually recommend people get Latitude laptops, they are more durable/reliable and can be found around the same price range if you know where to look. also they are easy to upgrade

        the only thing xps can be ahead is screen quality, but not everyone would care (I would, but I know latitude models that can be easily upgraded or comes with a good panel)

      Make sure you buy the an extra warranty(which I highly recommend) at the time of purchase not after you receive it. This is because the prices differ drammatically. You will get one quote a time of purchase and then get an inflated price after you received the laptop.3 years NBD is the best option. Guarantee you will need it. Every Dell laptop I have been given for work has needed some sort of hardware repair. One laptop I had needed a whole new motherboard!

          I don't think people pay $900+ for an ultrabook to watch videos and browse the web only (get a $250 Chromebook for that). The XPS has a pretty capable processor (better than the Intel based MacBook Pro's) and 8GB of RAM is not sufficient. I have an 2019 XPS with 8GB running Linux and it is much, much slower than my 2015 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM.

            My previous (7th Gen i7 + 1050Ti) laptop has 20GB,

            My current laptop (11th Gen i5 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/607072) has 8GB. -> "Typically plugging into two or three external displays in various work locations via Displaylink and Displayport/DVI hubs, running Onedrive x2, Teams/Zoom, Whatsapp, Outlook, Windows 10 Mail, Xodo PDF, Citrix Workspace, RDP and about 10-15 Edge tabs -> the responsiveness of the 1135G7/Swift 3X has been just a joy to use - particularly noticeable when searching through large email databases/multiple accounts in Outlook and Mail."

            It is subjectively way way more snappy than my 7th Gen laptop. I did NOT expect that. I was going to keep my 7th gen i7 as my main workstation at home, but it's now gathering dust in the cupboard after experiencing the exceptional performance gains of the Swift 3X. This tells me that the processor gains + NVME + memory speed are significantly more influential in my use case than 8GB vs 20GB of RAM.

            I have to say 8GB is enough for most tasks, including moderately heavy office tasks, light creation and light gaming.

            For heavy creation/gaming, absolutely, the more RAM the better. But I'd reckon most people use a desktop for those things.

          Generally up to 5 days processing time, 1 week for delivery = 2 weeks, an additional week specified as an outlier, because we'd all rather be told we'll receive it latest by a date and get it sooner vs being told it will be there in a week and potentially waiting longer.
