Yeah, but isn't the memory on these soldered?

    • You're right, fixed!

      • Hey Limaaa the listing on eBay says SSD is 200 GB not 256 GB.

        • +1

I'm pretty sure it's 256 but I already edited info to match ebay listing. ;)

  • Throw in a 16GB memory stick

This is not possible as RAM on this laptop is soldered on.

    • Thanks, I misconstrued the on board slot as being upgradeable.

  • +1

    Pretty cracka deal

  • +4

great deal for those who just need only 8GB ram.

  • This or the Acer Swift X3?

    • +11

      Dell for build quality

    • I bought the Acer Siwft 3x (i5 with 8gb ram) last weekend. I found that the new tigerlake cpu can run encoding tasks really well - I was able to use it to stream 1080p content using OBS without even breaking a sweat. I think it was due to the intel iris Xe (+Max) working well together with the CPU.

*I should add that I got my 3x when it was priced at $798 last weekend.

It depends on your use really. If you need a well built machine and wouldn't need to do anything other than your usual office tasks and/or web browsing then I'd go for this XPS. Dell for build quality for sure.

If you're after a fairly good built machine (I was surprised how well this 3x is built considering the price and comparing it to others within the $800-1000 price range) and need a bit of media/content creation on the go, I'd say the 3x is a no brainer.

      • I wouldn't get hung up on the performance. You're not buying these for performance. Even an entry level last gen Ryzen will beat the snot out of both of these chips for encoding tasks. You're buying the XPS for the rest of the laptop

        • Re encoding, not true for the Swift 3X - see https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/686505/acer-swift-3x-…

The Swift 3X is something of an encoding specialist, where programs that can use Intel DeepLink will utilise both the XE iGPU and the XE MAX dGPU simultaneously.

"Intel provided Deep Link testing scenarios that showcase what an Iris Xe Max system can do. It’s impressive, even when compared against a pricier HP Envy 15 with a much more powerful GeForce RTX 2060. We tested both scenarios below using Intel-supplied workloads, but we tweaked some encoding settings on the HP Envy 15’s benchmarks to optimize for best performance on Nvidia’s GPU (using NVENC instead of Intel’s Quick Sync, for instance)…

Intel is proud of the “DL Boost” DP4A deep learning capabilities unlocked in its graphics chips, and Topaz’s Gigapixel AI photo upscaling software leverages it very well. Better yet, Deep Link lets the program tap into the encoding capabilities of both Xe GPUs at the same time. The test below measures how long it took to convert a batch of 20 low-resolution images to 4K resolution…This is very much a scenario that puts Intel’s technology in the best light, but that’s what we’re looking for in our initial Xe Max evaluation, and photo upscaling is a very relatable real-world workload for AI. The Swift 3X absolutely crushes the RTX 2060 inside the HP Envy 15, taking well under half the time to upscale the entire batch of images…

The popular media encoder HandBrake also supports Deep Link’s Hyper Encode feature in alpha form via its nightly builds. We downloaded the nightly build on February 15 to test it. Intel’s test here converts a batch of ten 4K videos to 1080p HEVC videos. Because the Swift 3X includes two Quick Sync-capable Intel GPUs (discrete and integrated), we set the “Number of simultaneous encodes” option in HandBrake’s advanced settings to two, up from the default one. As you can see below, that supercharges the conversion time versus encoding just a single video in the queue. (The HP Envy 15’s RTX 2060 performed identically with either option selected, because it relies only on the single GPU.)

…But you need to think hard about whether you can actually put Intel’s Iris Xe Max to work. Deep Link is a new technology that works in only a handful of applications at the moment, and even then, not always in official release form yet (witness the HandBrake nightly). The list currently includes HandBrake, Topaz Gigapixel AI, Adobe Lightroom Classic, OBS, and XSplit, along with some Asian-focused software. Intel also touts Deep Link’s performance in ML Perf deep learning workloads, and Deep Link now works with Blender’s Cycles, albeit only in prerelease form. In the future, Intel says Deep Link will also work with CyberLink and Magix, two more popular video creation tools…"

Dell for resell value, its better than Acer but worse than apple of course

    • +1

@Ironpaw I can recommend the Swift X3 - using it right now - the caveat being, like @Monstro, I'd wait for another price drop to around the $798 mark.
Trade off legendary Dell XPS for 11th gen Intel processor and 4GB XE max graphics.
Have written up a fair bit at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/607072

  • +1

Guess this is a good buy for my mum? She mainly just browsing or watch dramas, and some light word documenting. How's the battery though?

    • Yes. Lightweight and good display for 1080p movie streaming / watching. Battery is actually pretty good, has a 4-Cell, 52 WHr, Integrated battery, coupled with a 13" screen should last a day of general use.

  • +1

mmm 16GB minimum for me. Chrome browser eats 8Gb easy.

    • +21

      No, it doesn't

    • +6

I agree 8GB would be the minimum these days, but saying Chrome would use all 8GB is just not true and perpetuates poor information. Enterprises have been running 8GB since well after Win10 came out.. Like I say, it wouldn't suit everyone, but it is not redundant

    • +1

It's true that web browsing uses a lot more memory than it used to, but that's only partially the fault of browsers and more a reflection of the way web design has gone — practically every website is now laden with first and third party scripts, libraries, autoplay videos etc…Blocking extraneous elements on nytimes.com reduces the pages memory usage by more than half, for example.

  • +1

kinda dated, but I guess at this price it's not that bad

    • +4

Cheapest price ever for an xps ^-^

      • +1

I am not a big fan of xps, I have seen a lot of them in repair

I usually recommend people get Latitude laptops, they are more durable/reliable and can be found around the same price range if you know where to look. also they are easy to upgrade

the only thing xps can be ahead is screen quality, but not everyone would care (I would, but I know latitude models that can be easily upgraded or comes with a good panel)

  • +5

My mobile has 12GB ram, 16GB should be considered bare minimum for a laptop.

    • +48

Tape your mobile to the back of the laptop and she'll be good haha.

      • Haha this is gold!

  • Can't upgrade RAM on this one - Would suite someone with light office use

  • +2

Op, I am looking for 14-15 inch screen and 16gig RAM atleast…can you suggest some laptops…

  • Whats the cost and steps to add an extra warranty

    • Contact seller, msg the ebay team and state you'd like to buy with extra warranty. They'll create a custom invoice depending on the warranty options you discuss.

    • Make sure you buy the an extra warranty(which I highly recommend) at the time of purchase not after you receive it. This is because the prices differ drammatically. You will get one quote a time of purchase and then get an inflated price after you received the laptop.3 years NBD is the best option. Guarantee you will need it. Every Dell laptop I have been given for work has needed some sort of hardware repair. One laptop I had needed a whole new motherboard!

      • Sent the mail and have been advised a below:

To upgrade the unit's warranty to 3Y Premium Support and Onsite Service would cost an additional $372.77 [Save up to 20% on 3 Years Premium Support, end 4 Mar 2021]

        Unit Price: $1,279.00
New Unit Price (incl 3Y warranty): $1,651.77

Can anyone confirm if this price for added peace is justified. Seems almost 1/3rd cost which compared to Lenovo is way higher

  • +5

Regarding all the 8GB comments. I have an XPS13 9360 from 2017, with 8GB RAM.

    • Chrome works fine for me, i have around 10-12 tabs open at any time
    • Even runs 100% fine with an egpu playing dota.
    • +2

10-12 tabs? You are not trying hard enough!

    • -4

Yes from 2017, have you ever tried video editing, why would you buy a laptop with 8GB ram with no upgradibilty in 2021.

      • +9

Not sure an XPS is what you want to be using for video editing.
8gb in this model is fine for a browsing and office work machine

      • +9

No, I don't video edit. Not sure I would be doing any video editing on a $900 xps13.

It's an ultrabook, main uses being watching videos, browsing the web.

        • +4

I don't think people pay $900+ for an ultrabook to watch videos and browse the web only (get a $250 Chromebook for that). The XPS has a pretty capable processor (better than the Intel based MacBook Pro's) and 8GB of RAM is not sufficient. I have an 2019 XPS with 8GB running Linux and it is much, much slower than my 2015 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM.

          • +6

@bio: Well I do! With the very very rare time I also hook up an egpu to game which it handles well.

I'm happy to pay for the form factor/build quality as well.

            • +1

@jonnoyeo: You certainly can. My point is memory is the limiting factor in this configuration. It could do much more with more RAM, which is relatively cheaper than upgrading other components.

          • @bio:

I don't think people pay $900+ for an ultrabook to watch videos and browse the web

            I do.

8GB of RAM is not sufficient.

            It is for me.

            • +4

@1st-Amendment: What you do or think is immaterial. You can also pay a million dollars to purchase a Formula 1 car and then use to commute to work but that doesn't make that its main use.

The statement "It's an ultrabook, main uses being watching videos, browsing the web." is incorrect. The main uses of an ultrabook are not watching videos and browsing the web.

          • +1

@bio: My primary desktop has 16GB.

            My previous (7th Gen i7 + 1050Ti) laptop has 20GB,

My current laptop (11th Gen i5 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/607072) has 8GB. -> "Typically plugging into two or three external displays in various work locations via Displaylink and Displayport/DVI hubs, running Onedrive x2, Teams/Zoom, Whatsapp, Outlook, Windows 10 Mail, Xodo PDF, Citrix Workspace, RDP and about 10-15 Edge tabs -> the responsiveness of the 1135G7/Swift 3X has been just a joy to use - particularly noticeable when searching through large email databases/multiple accounts in Outlook and Mail."

It is subjectively way way more snappy than my 7th Gen laptop. I did NOT expect that. I was going to keep my 7th gen i7 as my main workstation at home, but it's now gathering dust in the cupboard after experiencing the exceptional performance gains of the Swift 3X. This tells me that the processor gains + NVME + memory speed are significantly more influential in my use case than 8GB vs 20GB of RAM.

I have to say 8GB is enough for most tasks, including moderately heavy office tasks, light creation and light gaming.

For heavy creation/gaming, absolutely, the more RAM the better. But I'd reckon most people use a desktop for those things.

      • have you ever tried video editing

        no, why would I?

why would you buy a laptop with 8GB ram with no upgradibilty in 2021.

Who upgrades in 2021? Do you upgrade your toaster? Your fridge? Everything is an appliance these days. Buy, use, replace with a new one.

        • I do and so do many others, I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 15 from 8Gb to 24gb. I bought it as i knew its upgradable. If it were not upgradable I'd expect it to have at least 16GB.

          • @OzHan:

I do and so do many others

How many is many? And how big is that in relation to total market share? <br>
These guys do their homework, DIY PC people aren't their target market.

  • +2

Also any other model in 13 inch screen with option for upgrading RAM

  • is it touch screen? Can't see it in the specs listed.

    • +2

      Yes it is.

  • @Rep, how much longer us the 20%off dell deal going to be on for?

    • +1

      I believe until midnight tonight.

  • Hi OP, do you have other colours?

    • +1

What's available on the listing is what's available.

  • +1

Great laptop if you don’t need much ram and good camera. I can’t justify the quality of its terrible webcam, given the original premium price of these XPS models.

  • Did it say expected delivery in April?

    • +3

It's local stock, so delivery is expected in under 2-3 weeks.

      • Weeks to deliver local stock? Lol.

        • Generally up to 5 days processing time, 1 week for delivery = 2 weeks, an additional week specified as an outlier, because we'd all rather be told we'll receive it latest by a date and get it sooner vs being told it will be there in a week and potentially waiting longer. I wouldn't be surprised if most of you received your purchase in under 2 weeks. :)

  • Looks like this model doesn't have a touchscreen. no mention of it in the specs

    • Rep confirmed touch screen though.

      • +1

It does have touch screen. I have to follow guidelines regarding specs in advertising that's why some things may be omitted.

  • No digitiser on this baby, right?

  • I must be getting old … but do I need to buy a USB to HDMI adaptor to use this with a monitor?

    • +1

Yes, but if your monitor supports it use a usb / usb-c to display port adapter.

  • FHD or UHD? Picture shows large lower bezel but I thought infinity edge was the new skinny bezel?

    • +2

FHD. Infinity has super slim bezels and thicker bottom bezel with camera. It creates a more open viewing space. It's nice.

  • +1

    I didn't realise XPS range doesn't have standard USB 3 ports…

  • +1

Hey lima! Just ordered one and was wondering which pen is compatible(if any) with the touch screen of this laptop. Cheers

    • Is that touch screen laptop
I couldn’t find any description of it
Are you sure its touch screen laptop

      • +1

Yes lima replied to one of the comments in this thread mentioning this is a touch screen model.

        • This is correct

      • I also got a reply directly from the eBay seller that it is touch screen. And promptly ordered one :)

        • +2

          Same here :)
Same unit on dell direct site $1600

    • This laptop isn't compatible with a Dell active pen.

      • Thanks for the reply! I was also wondering if the delivery time is 1 month as suggested by eBay or quicker by any chance?

        • +1

No, it's local stock so you can expect your product in as little 2 weeks :)

          • @LiMaaa: You still searching for 15inch ?

            • @pyramid: Same here lol

            • +1

@pyramid: Yes, but I'm thinking to propose to Dell a laptop deal with a few configurations, as clearly there is a need here to be met. So give me some time :)

  • For those who know. Stop the whining¡!!

    • Is there still potential for this to be an issue re such a late build of this version and what's Dell's general stance on returns for the coil whine issue as its my only hesitation re purchasing

  • 200G SSD???? C-grade chips?

    • 256gb m.2 nvme.

  • Is the storage upgradeable at least?
