37mm has it’s place, especially if you’re dressing in black tie. Something thin that can fit neatly under a cuff is not to be scoffed at.

      • love small watches; I've been wearing my 40.5mm orient bambino less and less these days

with that said this seiko probably isn't the watch for black tie given its day/date complication

    • +10

Is that what your last girlfriend said to you?

      • Or his last boyfriend

        • +1

          No. He was kinder.

      • I think he forgot to put a decimal between the 3 and the 7

      • Yes.

        • +2

This 47mm Invicta Grand Diver just dropped in price to $111.64
Maybe that might be big enough. I added it to the post.

    • +6

37mm is hardly tiny. This trend towards huge 50mm dials is only a very recent one.

      • +1

Yeah agree. All these DWs with their massive dials will die out in the next few years.

        • -1

Isn't that what Nokia were saying about phone screen size about 15 years back?

          • +4

@cashless: The massive watch dial trend is more to do with fashion. Phone screen sizes have increased for usability and functionality reasons.

    • +1

I find almost all watches these days too big. I have small wrists, and 37mm is the sweet spot, with even most 42's being too chunky. Old dress watches are great, but the problem is they can also be quite fragile. My current daily is an SKX013 which i specifically sought out over the better looking 42mm SKX007 for its size.

    • It's the traditional standard size for a dress watch.

Do you also wear an oversized belt buckle with your business suit?

  • +3

Perfect size for us slender wristed folks, thanks Watchnerd!

    • Not just for the slender-wristed. 37mm is about the right size to wear with a suit.

You shouldn't overdo your metals with a suit. You want a reasonably-sized, non-flashy watch, with a small, simple belt buckle. Just make sure the metals match.

if you're wearing a huge watch and a large belt buckle, you may as well add a ten gallon hat to complete the look.

      • Now i want a ten gallon hat.

  • +1

    thanks op - ordered

      Don't forget 6% Cashrewards.

      • am ashamed to say i skipped that step (on purpose) thinking this would sell out straight away and just rushed to rejoin prime and buy….

        • +1

Looks like they've got plenty of stock, I would cancel the order & buy again via CR.

    • +13

      Ok sorry about that.

      • +3

Please don't be sorry, I appreciate the effort :)

    • Amazon watch photos are terrible. The Seiko 5s look great in person. And a great quality display back automatic for under 100.

Might be a bit small for some, but a great deal.

  • +1

Been waiting for a good deal on Seiko 5 for ages! Thanks OP!

  • Anyone know if the stainless steel can be swapped out for leather straps?

    • +2

yes, you can use any standard 18mm watch strap

    • +2

It certainly can. Apparently the included steel band is the worst point of this watch, but is easily swapped out.

    • +1

Any recommendations for a decent leather strap at 18mm?

      • +2

Just go to your local jewellers. The prices aren't much more than you'll pay online, you can see the straps in-person, and they will fit it for you.

        • Thanks

    • +1

Check out the review that's posted in the deal description. They mention changing straps in there.

    • +2

They definitely can. You'll need a tool to remove it initially.

I'd suggest once you've removed it, to switch over to a watch strap that has quick release in them so you can change them out easily going forward.

      • Any recommendations?

  • Would this strap be rough though?

    • Seiko metal straps will be smooth. But they will feel very light and tinny feeling.

      • Yeah you get what you pay for with metal bracelets

    • It's OK.I found these bracelets to be hair nippers, so it'll pull out hairs if you have hairy arms/wrists.

Not a watch expert but was wondering what the 21 Jewels meant. For other wondering: https://www.prestigetime.com/blog/what-are-the-jewels-in-a-w…

  • Arguably one of the best entry level automatic dress watch.

  • +1

Thanks OP, picked up the Seiko.

  • +1

Got the Invicta, been looking for a green watch for ages, cheers OP

  • Invicta showing $146.60 delivered with Prime on Amazon AU, but interestingly, the US site has it for $114.98 delivered

    • Down to $114.57 delivered now on AU.

  • +1

A great first automatic watch for a teenager. The movement doesn't hack or handwind and the crystal is hardlex so good luck polishing out scratches, but it has applied indices and it looks sharp. Sorely tempted to get one for my oldest son.

    • +1

Excellent idea. I never considered this for myself, but my son has been asking for an upgrade from the Swatch he’s had since primary school and he prefers bracelets over straps, so I think this would be perfect.

  • Take a look at he SNKE51 if you are after a slightly larger version.

  • +1

Thanks OP just ordered one. now pls tell me where to find nice leather straps for the watch?

  • +1

Guys change the strap to leather one, it will totally transform your watch

    • +1

Agreed, and also looks good with a blue nato. Some pics in this review.

      • Yep I changed 2 of mine and they look very classy now.

        • +1

bought 2 WOCCI 18mm leather straps to go with it :D

  • Nice watch, especially for the price.

Highlights for me are the proportions, the versatility, and the quality of the dial, hands and case. Wears very comfortably because it's small, light and thin.

Lowlight is definitely the bracelet. I found it super annoying to re-size even with the right tools and plenty of experience. What's worse is the sound it makes. When I move my wrist the bracelet rattles and jingles and just generally feels cheap.

If I can find a suitable bracelet I'll be swapping it out and I think it'll really improve the watch.

  • I got the invicta today. The crown was broken on arrival and wouldn't rotate/pull out. Good looking watch but questionable quality.
