  • Interesting. Looks like a budget-friendly alternative to GoPro for those that don't use them too often?

    • This was/is as good as Hero 8 black (each model has strengths and weaknesses) but it hasn’t been updated for a while

      • +3

This thing is old, been on sale here same price years ago.

this is more comparable to the Hero 7 not 8.

        • +1

This camera has received updates as recent as Feb 21. When initially released image quality and exposure wasn't as great as the go pro but recent reviews have shown that this trades blows with the GoPro Hero 8 (better stabilisation and more neutral colour on the OSMO IIRC) while having a front screen that the Hero 8 doesn't have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EML_DtvCXG8. I personally will sell my existing Hero 8 and get this as I was waiting for this deal to drop.

  • Boght one from Amazon US couple of weeks ago. Missed this deal.

  • +1

Dang good deal! Bought this a while back for $~280 and it's been great, extra battery is about $20 so you're getting an extra $40 value

    • +3

      each battery is $29.00
you get 2 extra batteries, so that's $58.00

      • Sorry my bad, forgot whether the exact price. Even better value then!

  • If im to wear this on my chest, is there like a good mount or stablizer that you need?

    • +3

The built-in stabilization should be good enough. Check out some videos on youtube for examples

just wondering, Did they just copied the last year deal?🤔🧐🤨
    BTW good price though

  • +3

This is a good price. I have the unit and it works well. Software is a bit hit and miss with connecting to my Android device. And there is no inbuilt 'take still from video' feature that I can see.

It works well underwater. The mic is reasonable. The picture quality is very good. I'd recommend it over the GoPro at this price point, if you don't need horizon levelling. The GoPro is $529 with an extra battery and card at the moment, but lots of issues reported with build quality etc. It is a better unit overall if it has no issues.

    • Me too, its even better than Gopro hero 9 black imo

  • Buy this or pay a little more and get the Insta360 ONE R?

    • +1

haha little more. 2.5x times the price it seems. looks amazing though. i want one now

      • Haha yeah not exactly a 'little more' clearly am bad at maths..

    • What does the video look like for the 360?

  • Is this better than gopro 8??

  • -8

It is not good ,trust me

    • -3

Thanks will stick with my gopro.

    • So what is a better alternative?

      • -4

Gopro is the best choice so far, waiting for the good price.

      • +2

don't listen, this is a great deal. you can pay double for a GoPro and it will be a little bit better.

      • +2

It is comparable to gopro 7. This price point is a good deal.

I think the screen on the camera side is useful for framing shots too.

I've got the gopro 7 black and haven't been too blown away by it.

  • The first one I bought was DOA, got a replacement again DOA. Finally had to make a claim on my CC to get my money back.

    Good luck fells.

  • +1

I believe GoPro's from 5 onwards have GPS pretty cool for map overlays or speedo on video's this does not have a GPS, depends what you use it for

  • Is this good for recording on a bicycle? No funky stuff just safety

    • Yes

    • Yes I use it on bike rides

  • +2

This replaced my gopro6 I reckon it’s great. No issues. Great price and screen on the front is handy. Wifi and app are good.

  • +3

I bought this 2 yrs ago. Used it for snorkeling, cycling and running. Fits any GoPro mount. It’s been great

  • Considering this or a Hero 9. Have an ancient now Hero 4 silver and while that was good for its time, its pretty shit and the casing I have on it is pretty haggard. Any suggestion?

    • depends on usage and budget ..
if u have the money then go 'PRO'
      the 9 is amazing

      • ive got the money for it but these DJI's keep popping up for sale. Basically just want something that will be awesome for recording the reefs up in Cairns and other amazing beach and scenic places we visit in our travels here in Oz. My silver still works fine but its quality isnt there, especially for anything where Im moving around as there is no stabilization.

        • I really like my DJI, but when I got mine it was (imo) the absolute winner for price, front screen, and replaceable lens. The DJI replacement is so simple, just unscrew and screw on the replacement, and the ND/underwater colour filters aren't clip on like the gopro - they screw on and seal.

Now that the gopro lens/cover is user replaceable, I think the balance swings their way when price isn't an issue.

I'd also check the frame rates you want to film in, the Hero9 has more options in that regard for hi-res, hi-speed filming.

Here’s a really good video comparing Osmo Action to Hero 9. I bought osmo action because I figured that the quality looked basically the same for 1/3 the price. I’m not “pro” enough to justify the price difference. DJI released a software update earlier this year that improved video quality but GoPro still seems to have more extreme colours. But I can always edit that into the footage later. I’ve heard of reports from friends and online saying that the gopros have a tendency to glitch out or freeze. It’s also worth noting that Osmo action is 2 years old at this point and hero 9 is around 1 year old. Both will likely be updated by the end of the year. That being said I bought my osmo action last JB deal and have been happy with it.

      • That video was quite helpful. I think im going to take the plunge and grab one of these DJI's as its very close to the gopro quality in his video reviews. Plus I can always throw the video into a editor and manipulate it to how Id want it. For $200 cheaper seems like a good deal.

        • I think you’ll really like it. Don’t forget to grab to the two free batteries when you checkout.

  • When I bought this 2 years back I bought it for $449
    still going strong without issues

My use case are mainly for selfie vlog so the front screen is so handy
Go Pro didn't introduce the front screen until Go Pro 9

Bought it to replace GoPro Hero 3+ for $280 (mainly because I want USB-C everything, otherwise 1080p 60FPS was fine from the GoPro and was happy to continue using it).

I watched lots of reviews comparing 7/8/9 vs this and to be honest, it still holds up to them. If you look online, 9 seems riddled with issues and that is exactly what I don't want when I am capturing great moments.

    Edit:

Also, bought a waterproof case for it. Official case is expensive, so didn't buy that one but found this with good reviews, so far works well! https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07T5KS7MF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp…

Maybe I didn't really need to, but so used to having one with the GoPro Hero 3+ while using it underwater.

    • It's waterproof without a case, to 10-11m from memory. I've taken mine snorkeling heaps workout issues

  • Would this be good to record tennis matches from behind the player level, mounted on a fence or tripod?

  • The lack of GPS is a deal-breaker for me. Otherwise a great deal!

  • Looking for something that I can easily take photos with while cycling. I had a Hero8 but it is clumsy to turn on, switch to camera mode, take photo, put it back to sleep etc. Difficult and lots of steps when you are zipping along and only have one hand free. Would have been great if it could be setup so you press the shutter in standby and it just takes a pic and goes to sleep again. Does anyone know if it is easier on the Osmo, or if you can change fov? Thanks

I've filmed a number of multi-day charity rides with a Hero8 front and back. The trick is to set it to one touch on, one touch off. You should be able to do this for both video and stills - whatever you're trying to capture. One touch turns the camera on and starts recording/taking stills. Another touch stops and turns the camera off. Definitely makes it safer than fiddling around going through multiple steps!

How often do JB have Wicked Wednesday (5% off)?

  • +1

Does anyone know if GoPro accessories work with Osmo Action. Specifically the GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip.. Wondering what accessory we could use to mount onto a cap/helmet.

    • DJI designed it to work with all existing gopro mounts that have the finger clip design. Once you place it into the mounting frame that comes in the box it works exactly the same as a GoPro.

    • Do you reckon this will be good for a helmet camera for a daily commute?

      • I haven't mounted it on a helmet before but I don't see why It wouldn't work. It's waterproof so you wouldn't need to worry about rain and the quality at 4k is pretty decent so you could read number plates. If you are recording in the maximum resolution with stabilisation on the battery lasts for about 1 hour and I haven't had any overheating issues. It will switch off the screen and wifi when the battery gets low to save power. Depending on how long your commute is you might need to charge it during the day to top up the battery for the ride home. You could also take one of the spare batteries that JB is offering but you can only charge one battery in the camera at a time and I imagine it would get annoying switching batteries everyday. (You can buy a cradle that will charge all three batteries at once on ebay etc) One other thing worth noting is the camera has a feature called "snapshot" it allows you to just push the record button and have the camera switch on and start recording, then when you arrive you can just hold the power button and it will shut down.

        • This is good to know, thank you.
          It's a 40 minute commute each way.
I don't want top quality, just be able to see plates. Does it do audio too?
Can I use it without turning on either screen?
          Best I look up reviews.

          • +1

@lordra: it records sound the microphone isn't AMAZING but it works. After you start recording you can turn the screen off by quickly pressing the power button. This is the review that sold me on it. https://youtu.be/Fq93zMQZp8Q

            • @Ipodisclassic: Thanks, I already watched that exact Same video around the time this deal was posted! I didn't get it but now I have a price point for the 2nd hand market. Cheers!
