Just beware that Dell has been caught artificially gimping the 3070 on this laptop for some reason in BIOS. It under performing vs other laptops from Asus and Lenovo with similar AMD CPUs and Nvidia 3070s.

    • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LhNdyoA1nc&ab_channel=Jarro… - apparently the issue has been resolved. (But I am no expert).

They did indeed 'fix' it, but the results were thoroughly underwhelming (i.e - barely any change in performance, certainly not what it SHOULD be).
So it seems like there's more to the story that they aren't telling us…

Just advising to check benchmarks of other laptops with equivalent spec before jumping the gun and buying this laptop because you see the spec. Something doesn't seem right with their configuration vs the ones from the other manufacturers.

          • @shellshocked: Thanks, just a quick question… would you rather buy Razer Blade 15 Base (i7 6 core / 95w 3070) for AUD2,350 or this for approx AUD 2,567?

Considering the look I quite like Razer (I already bought it but haven't opened it yet so I can return it), but it seems too cheap. (although there are few issues which I believe will get addressed eventually)

@HelloV10: Well it depends on your use case. If you are purely gaming, I would look at the higher core count AMD CPU, because it's the fastest you can get at the moment. Also developers will be optimising for 8 core CPUs, because both consoles have AMD Ryzen processors. So your 6 core i7 will land up being a bottle neck in future games. My biggest concern with high end laptops is their cooling systems, and if they can cope without significant throttling.

              • @shellshocked: Thanks - I've decided to return the Razer and have purchased the Alienware :)

Good deal. My biggest gripe with all these laptops, at least the Australian variants, is that they're all locked to 1080p. I understand gamers of very specific games might favour 1080p @ 360hz, but give me a 4K or at least QHD display at 120-165hz any day of the week, it's not 2004 anymore!

1080p is fine as long as it's a quality screen. Not sure if this one is.

      • For me I guess it's more a case of going from a 4K OLED on my current laptop, and being spoiled to have to go back down to a 1080p LCD haha.
Looking for a new laptop with similar specs at the moment, but going to settle for something with a bright QHD 165hz screen i think.

The newly announced Alienware X15 and X17 have the optional QHD / 4K displays available in local variants. They're rather expensive though!

Thanks for the heads up! Shame they don't let us really customise them and force you to get the premium parts included. The US site from memory allows a fair bit of Dell/Alienware customisation - I think ours did as well back in the day from memory, but now it's mostly pre-set specs.

Been aiming for a 5800/5900 Ryzen setup, have been going through recent comparisons with the new Intel chip which competes most closely with the 5800H, it's fairly similar in most benchmarks but at the cost of 20w more pound for pound (given it's 7nm for the AMD vs 10nm for the Intel). So for battery/heat sake, I'm leaning towards the AMD still. Big improvement on the 10th gen chips for Intel though, promising signs of things to come!

The USA and UK get a 1440p variant for this laptop. But the 1080p is the reason I am holding back on purchasing this one. Not suitable for such an expensive device.

      • They're a generic rebadged Chinese manufacturer, so I would be a little dubious on the quality of the construction, display, and warranty.
They are great value though, the Infinity laptops.

I ended up pulling the trigger on a new Lenovo Legion 7. Has a really bright 16:10 QHD display @ 165hz, AMD 5800H, 3070 GTX, decent audio setup and a good construction of an anodised aluminium body. I also customised to have 32GB of ram.

$3700, but got $200 off due to some deal at checkout (not going to complain!), and then using an amazing 14% cashback offer on Cash Rewards, means I'll ultimately get it for just under $3000, so I'm pretty happy with that.
Was tossing up between it and the AMD Razer Blade 14 in the end, both getting pretty great reviews.

  • This, or the slightly cheaper R6 with Intel CPU?

  • any way to get it back down to $2,603
