          • @AlienC: If you want any semblance of texture, you know a microwave won’t do you. Unless of course you prefer soggy KFC vs crispy reheated KFC.

            • @ATangk: When you are hungry food is food.. honestly idk they are probably much better in an air fryer

  • I’ve got a permanent oven, Philips xxl and this - use this outside when lotta smoke/ oil and exhaust is useless. Crispy pork skin/ salmon skin.

I purchased this probably around 16 months ago now and it's hands down one of the best purchases I made. If you're on the fence you won't be disappointed.

I was interested in getting one, but then found out that running my oven was cheaper and i can cook more food at once. the last thing i needed was something taking up my limited countertop space, lol.

but then found out that running my oven was cheaper

How did you work that out?

      • It appears Rickrone has not worked it out.

  • How good are these at roasting potato’s or even sweet potatoes?

I like to roast them in the woven now with the skin on and a light coating of olive oil. I like them crispy on the outside and soft in the inside.

Will this air fryer be able to do it? I assume the potatoes have to be on the smaller side with the air fryer.

    • +1

We’ve done potatoes and sweet potatoes and they come out great.

      • They dont get dried out?

        • They will come out the same as an oven

People who own an oven and air fryer: 'air fryers are great and much better for certain things'.

People who haven't used an air fryer: 'it's just a small oven, air fryers are pointless'.

Now which group would be in a better position to provide an informed comparison…

    • Just seems like a cop out vs an oven.

I've had this same air fryer for about 2 years and only cook for 1 or 2 people.
Over this time I've probably used my full sized oven about 75% less and so that has been a big saving on electricity. This size fits neatly on the bench and is light enough to pick up and put in the cupboard when not in use. Easy to clean, sometimes only needing to wipe out with a paper towel. Just two dials to turn, heat & time, so no extra bells and whistles that I don't need. It does what a fan forced oven does but quicker and cheaper. Chips are quicker & crispier with shaking them a few times during cooking. This is a cheap price, I paid about $45 when on special.

To answer the pie question, two normal size frozen meat pies or 9 mini party pies fit on the floor of the basket, 8-10 min at 170 degrees, nice.

For anyone on the fence here I believe you should buy it and thank us all later. Its my best $49 purchase of lockdown 2.0. what makes it interesting compared to an oven?
    - 5 min preheat
    - heat pizza's quickly
    - I cook my Roti and naan in there
    - I fan grill veggies in 10 min
    - I cook halloumi in 5 min
    - I cook asparagus in 3 min
    - I cooked dumplings on low heat
    - Sweet potato fries
    - Garlic bread in 5 min

The list goes on. basically $34 to save hours of time per week compared to using an oven

      Thanks, Sids20.

I was wondering, how it can be useful to vegetarian like me.
      Pulled the trigger, finally.

Can it do eggplant ok.. i love a good eggplant in the fry pan or tofu in deep oil.

I will probably get a size up or two above this one just so i can reheat a whole dominos pizza instead of a few slices at once as an example.

      • Does eggplant great. Just make sure you salt the eggplant and squeeze out the bitter water

        • Oh nice must be healthier too with less oil or none at all

    • How do you cook your naan in it? And halloumi? And sweet potato fries that you cut up yourself, or pre-fried one?

  • At 1pm 1 left in fountain gate, price is not discounted on shelf, but scans as 34

  • Love the size & functionality, but just wondering if they have fixed the wiggling gap bits

    • You mean the 4 rubber bumpers on the removable tray?

      • The sliding compartment always need bit of wiggling to slide in ( I got it at the first round of sales long time ago )

        • Yeah that's still a problem then. It can still go in askew, and you need to push it around a bit to square up.

  • Love the size ( small enough so you won’t be tempted to fry whole chicken ) & functionality, but just wondering if they have fixed the wiggling gap bits .

ive done a 1.5kg chicken in mine. fits nice

  • Serious question - would this https://www.bunnings.com.au/spector-17l-black-digital-commer… be more multi purpose and better overall wt cooking say curries and soups compared to an air fryer.

Can it do pies and schnitzels and chips the same as this air fryer..

Just trying to buy an appliance that covers more bases and more capacity so i only have to buy and use one appliance instead of many.

    • I would assume its a comparison between a Convection technology that uses hot air rising vs a fan forced technology like a typical air fryer.

Im not sure which is better. I would assume convection covers more bases but could be way slower. Could be wrong here though.

      • I would assume its a comparison between a Convection technology that uses hot air rising vs a fan forced technology like a typical air fryer.

Not really, they also have a fan in them and are basically a larger air fryer.

    • I would buy a brand name for not much more money.

      https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sunbeam-nutrioven-glass-conve…

Yes they are more multipurpose as you can fit more in them.
They also have a fan like an air fryer

Thanks OP. Brought 2, 1 for me and other one as a gift.

So, do people cook anything other than frozen pre-oiled foods in these?

    • Yes, anything you can cook in an oven, including boiled eggs (no water).

    • Wings, wings and wings! I can get consistent crispy wings without turning vs in a fan forced oven which has more hot-spotting so I would rotate the tray and turn the wings.

  • Kmart have a round air fryer and it’s about the same cost but it’s dual layer so you can do chips and a chook. Downside is no handle to shake chips but…. Upside is more room to spread them out. Love it. Replaced my previous Aldi $35 air frier with it.

HINT a spray of canned aerosol oil makes baking and browning better than air alone. Light spay does it, no need to soak it

  • alright so I bought this Mistral one
And I have used the Philips for years.

The Mistral quality reflects its RRP price @ $49. It even truly reflects the discounted price of $34. If you have not used a Philips before, this Mistral is cheap and nasty.

    Cons:
    - Mistral basket is light and filmsy. Not a good thing. The whole machine moves when you try pull the basket out. You have to hold the machine down with one hand while pulling out the basket.

    • While cooking and you pull out the basket, the heating stops, probably for safety. Usually you pull out the basket while cooking so you can rotate food or shake.

    • it is small (same as my Philips)

    Pros
    - the price is ridiculous. $34 is so cheap. Even if it only lasts 1 year I'd be happy.

    • you achieve the similar result using the Mistral or a Philips.

    • I'll say it again, its 34 bucks!!! a meal for 2 people at Grill'd will cost more than that!
