Before proceeding ensure your Game Pass subscription is fully expired, auto-recurring payments disabled, and Microsoft account set to your current country of residence

A great deal for those new or with a fully expired subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and want to try Xbox Cloud Gaming which has just been released today.

If you have never used the $1 first month offer, this will cost in total $125.09 for 3 years. If you have a fully expired subscription, but have used the $1 first month offer previously, it will cost $146.70 total for 3 years.

Normally Ultimate sub would cost $15.95/mth x 36 months = $574.20, or $80/yr if purchasing cards from JB HiFi and following this same process without the need of VPN.

Please note:
  • This method is verified as working, as I've just completed it myself.
  • This only works if your current subscription has FULLY EXPIRED. New users will work fine and will get the deal $14 cheaper. If you have an existing subscription THIS WILL NOT WORK, and you will have to wait until your current sub finishes.
  • You will need a Microsoft account. Ensure auto renew/recurring payments are cancelled, and account details (especially Country) are set correctly before proceeding.
  • 36 months is the maximum that can be subscribed at once, though you can subscribe less if you wish.
  • If you wish to subscribe for 36months, and you are offered extra free months at all during this process, decline them as you can not exceed this limit and will be unable to enter your third 12 month code.
  • You will need a VPN (Comments have said that Windscribe for Chrome extension works). Although MTCGame listing says the codes are Brazil, mine were actually Turkey codes. Ensure your VPN has access to both countries, just in case.
  • Some have said MTCGame asked them to do a rigorous ID verification process to purchase their keys, there are some other options listed by f4te in comments for purchasing 12 month codes.
  • If you get RiskPolicyRejected error while redeeming codes, you need to keep trying. Try this method or this method from the comments.
Please read above and all steps below carefully before proceeding:

1. Go to MTCGame or Gamivo Edit: As suggested by chorong, Gamivo has 5% off with code COOLIFE
or CDkeys following dowey's instructions
(some other options listed by f4te in comments) and make sure country is set to Australia and currency to $AUD at the top of the page, purchase up to 3x12month Xbox Live Gold cards for $48 AUD each. Gamivo and other options prices will vary slightly.

2. You may need to verify phone number. It took roughly 45-50mins for the code to be received in my email, so don't stress too much. You will receive images of the codes all in one email. Type out all the codes into Notepad (they're in format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with a mixture of letters and numbers). Note that my codes were labelled "Xbox 12 Aylık Gold Üyelik (Türkiye)", and I had to use Turkey VPN to redeem.

3. Connect to your VPN (Comments have said that Windscribe for Chrome extension works), go to https://redeem.microsoft.com/?wa=wsignin1.0, login to your account (you will probably need to verify email address via security code sent to your email) and add each code. If you get an error about the wrong country, try changing to Brazil/Turkey VPN, or using an Incognito/Private window.

Edit: If you get RiskPolicyRejected error while redeeming codes, you need to keep trying. Try this method or this method from the comments.

4. Once all codes are added, go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/ and verify that you have up to the maximum of 36months. Mine said Subscription expires "September 29. 2024". It is IMPORTANT you verify all your Xbox Live Gold codes are redeemed successfully before proceeding.

5. Disconnect VPN, we will no longer need it.

6. Now that we have 36 months of Xbox Live Gold, we need to upgrade them to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. On the same page https://account.microsoft.com/services/ click on "Upgrade to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate" as seen on this picture

7. You will be taken to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate page to join. This should be the link in case you need it. First time users will see $1.00 price, expired users will see $15.95 price. Click join.

8. You will see the following dialog that you will be upgrading your membership, don't stress about current conversion ratio, etc. As long as your new renewal date matches you're good to go. Mine said "Your new Xbox Game Pass Ultimate renewal date will be: 30/09/2024"

9. Pay the $1 for new users, $15.95 for expired users via Credit Card or Paypal. Once done refresh the Services page to verify you've been successfully upgraded to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You will also see next charge "9/30/2024, AU$15.95" or similar, pictured here.

10. Once all has been verified, you can click "Manage" on the top-right and Turn off recurring billing, in case you forget later. Its this page if you can't find it. Once your subscription lapses in 3 years, hopefully you'll still be able to repeat this process.

    Don't even bother with MTCGames. Purchased 2x 12 Months Gold cards, was charged via stripe. 4 hours later, still nothing. Order still pending, contacted support and said try another payment method. Even though in their own system my transactions say completed and my credit card has been charged. Reckon they have refunded but wont provided any proof. Doubt it'll show up.

      Edit: Do not use AMEX in Stripe. Doesnt trigger 3DSecure and MTC will cancel your order. Communication is horrible but eventually worked out. Use an Aussie Bank issued Visa/Mastercard in Stripe. In the end ($39.36*3)+$15.95= $134 for 3 years.

        It sounds like you were successful in acquiring this deal, glad you were able to eventually get it sorted :)
        It seems your main issue was with the payment provider Stripe (though you say horrible communication with MTCGame, however your issue seems to have been sorted within about 5hrs looking at post times).
        The idea of this post isn't to advertise MTCGame (they're just the cheapest mostly), but the deal advertises quite a few stores where you can purchase these cards quite cheap.
        The idea of the post is to give detailed instructions on how to acquire this deal, as well as try and provide some troubleshooting for people who may have encountered issues, so I appreciate your post so people can search if they have a similar issue.
        I know you had an issue, but now that you've used the post to get such a great deal on Game Pass, would you mind removing your negative vote?

          Sure. But your post advertises and links directly to MTCGame and such a post is therefore subject to scrutiny. Maybe consider another site to default to. MTCGame still refuse to communicate anything to me regarding the cancelled Amex transactions being refunded. Which have now dropped off as pending and have posted today. So I'm going to have to go through a dispute with Amex to attempt getting my money back.

          Point still stands re: MTCGame's communication being garbage - so stay away. Their payment system of choice allows Amex. But they themselves consider you a scammer if you use Amex. Nice business practice. Neggers must work for MTCGame if they appreciate being taken for a ride.

    Thanks, sub finally expired yesterday and did this all this morning without any hiccups. Instant codes from Eneba and my connection through Torguard was fine. I just used a different browser than usual in case there was anything in my cache which could affect things. Good to go for three years, much appreciated for your write up and continued support to everyone in this post.

    Had paypal and cc payment issues through eneba and cdkeys "this card can't be used for this transaction" error. VPN related issue I guess. Tried with both windscribe and surfshark. Bit bewildered why most had no issue with paypal?

    Noticed mtcgame had Gpay option so used that instead (bonus via Gpay = no service fee!). Worked perfectly with exactly the same credit card.
    Took a couple minutes to get email asking for verification via mobile number, did that and waited another couple of minutes, got an email with the 3 keys.

    Completed the process with all the brilliant and detailed instructions above and now have ultimate for 36+1month for $117.28+$1 .

    Thanks, it worked with a small hiccup. I got 36 months from MTCGame for $117.28 + 1€.

    Sadly, I was not able to upgrade it as described. I got the following error:

    You currently have a subscription from a different region. If it still doesn't work, please contact customer support.

    My account region is set to Australia, but I guess somewhere in it is still my old address from Europe. Luckily, I managed to upgrade to ultimate by switching the storefront to my old region and activating the trial there using a different currency which upgraded my account.

          Looks like I'm boned. When I added the Gold subs apparently my account was set to USA -_-

          So now the only way for me to upgrade is to VPN in to USA but then it won't let me upgrade because I need a USA issued form of payment. GAH!

              For anyone else who runs into issues with “accidentally” applying Xbox Gold to your account in the USA region, buy a 1 month Xbox Ultimate gift card from CDKeys (I tried G2A first and the code didn’t work), change your region back to USA (under “Your Profile” in your MS account) and try redeeming the gift card code.

              It even added an extra month so I ended up with my Game Pass expiring 1/5/2025. Thanks Mistredo!!

    I've been off xbox live for some time…wanted to have a look at new Halo and San Andreas over the holidays.

    Saw this post and despite sketchy reviews I went with MTCGame coz I'm cheap and don't mind a a punt.

    I tripled down and went with 3 years of Turkish 12 month codes coz their Lira's on the slide and they were only like $39AUD.

    After 48 hours, nothing…

    No code, no response from emailing them, no online chat because it is borked "for maintenance."

    Fearing I had done my dough and would have to mess about with chargebacks, I was not willing to take selfies with my passport stapled to my forehead or any of the other ridiculousness I have read in this thread.

    So I went through the 'forgot my password' process, despite not having an account.

    Was sent a link and all of a sudden my account that I did not create was there.

    Hidden under 'My Orders' were the codes.

    All's well that ends well

    Keys bought through Gamivo
    Connected to Brazil VPN using PIA.

    It'll be added to "email" (Australia)
    "This code can't be redeemed. It was purchased in a different region from your account."

    So went in a changed the region in my Microsoft account to Brazil. But still getting the same errors.

    So Gamivo have said not every key can be activated via the VPN method. They have offered me a refund, but a convoluted one.

    "As long as you have not redeemed the key, you may return it.

    In order to accept a return and further refund your purchase, we would like to resell it again on our platform.

    We will put the key up for sale again, and once another customer purchases it and confirms the key is unused, we will be able to offer you a refund for your purchase. Alternatively, you may gift the key to a friend or a family member."

    This just worked for me, total cost was $178.32 through Eneba.

    Bought 3x12 months Basil keys @$50.29 +$11.08 service fee for using paypay. 28 degrees says I've been charged $162.37.

    I used nordVPN as i colllected the keys from Eneba and adding the keys to my microsoft account.

    Although I'm happy it worked out for you @dvddirect, my issue with Gamivo is still not resolved. #1 don't purchase Brazil codes and #2, I'd probably use another provider rather than Gamivo. P.S. I ended up going the JB gift card route and all worked out. But still stuck with Brazil codes that don't work and not trusting on Gamivo making my refund easy.

    This worked for me as well. Thanks OP! I used the link f4te0 posted for Eneba and changed the currency to Euro instead. I previously had good experience with Eneba and Turgame and chose to take that safer option for few dollars dearer. Came to A$152 on my card that has no overseas transaction fee or currency conversion fee. Installed windscribe extension on chrome and followed the steps to the letter. GPU now expires in 2025. So, A$152 plus the A$15.95 GPU 1st month fee = 3 years of GPU goodness. Kid's happy and my wallet thanks you OP!

    So I redeemed a conversion from XBL Gold to Game Pass Ultimate about 30 months ago, and I remember at the time it was said that this is a one-time opportunity to make that conversion. My GPU subscription lapsed in Nov 2021, and I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that it's possible to do the conversion again via this method after having already done it once?

    Seems unlikely that MS will remember that I've already made the conversion (and I understand I won't be getting the first month for $1), but can I dip back into the well of XBL Gold conversion again, or was it indeed a one-time thing?

    Just for anyone unsure on the current best prices, I had a look around and used the following.

    Gamivo 3x12mth TR subs @ € 29.95
    €89.85+service fee = €93.62 = $149.87AUD.

    Had to pay the $15.95 first month GPU conversion fee as this wasn't my first time.
    Pretty happy this still works and here's hoping it'll work again in 2025.

    Another success story with Gamivo and PIA Turkey. Had been paying for PC Game Pass, just received my Xbox so I wanted to jump to Ultimate.

    Protip: PC Game Pass was due to expire in 6 days but I didn't want to wait for it to expire to use this workaround. I upgraded to Ultimate, it charged me $15.95, then I cancelled for an immediate $15.95 refund and the subscription lapsed immediately (rather than in 6 days as it would have). I then got to use the $1 upgrade as PC Game Pass didn't count as previous use!

      Just wanted to say I experienced exactly the same thing. Redeemed codes no problem, but trying to upgrade to GPU gave me that same continuous loop that wouldn't enable me to buy on PC, and an error when I tried on the Series x.

      I waited 12 hrs, tried again, and it was all good.

      If you try and redeem Xbox Live Gold while Game Pass Ultimate is active it will convert to Ultimate months at the retail price which in this instance would only be about 15months of Ultimate.
      Unfortunately you will need to wait until your Game Pass subscription is fully expired.

        That link says $1 until I log in, and then switches to $15.95 per month. I've never had ultimate before, had a big break from gaming, but have 24 months of XBL Gold loaded. Looks like I can't buy ultimate for 2 years unless I want to flush that 24 months.

I'm worried without clarification, if I proceed and it does bill $15.95 per month, I'll be forced to cancel my credit card and lose my xbox account and any funds /gold spent entirely.

                  @dkNigs: This is the same screenshot as your previous comment? It says that your renewal date is 29/06/2024 so it will charge monthly from that date unless you turn off recurring billing (step 10 in my guide).

                  See step 8 screenshot I had the same dialog when I did mine.

                      I'm still certain it's just setting you up for monthly payments once the renewal date comes up and absolute worst case you will be able to cancel your membership, not have to cancel your card.

                        Whether I go from account services, or from the upgrade link, it does the same thing stating $15.95 per month. It did come up with the $15.95 per month crossed out with $1 in place once, but I had to take a phone call and didn't finish the process.

    My GPU expired few days ago. Does this process still work?
    Second question: Is it better to get this deal on the account which had GPU expired or with another xbox account which didnt have gold or ultimate in last 2 years. Second account has $1 offer for GPU.

    Confirming still working as today, purchased from MTCGame.

    One hiccup, thanks to @pointless martyr above. After purchase, I received an email to verify phone after about 10 mins. Waited an hour no codes, went to bed still no codes this morning. Went to profile, said forgot password and reset it, logged in and the 3 x gold codes where in order history.

    The rest went as per described above.

    Hello Everyone,
    I bought x2 12 month xbox gold turkey from MTC and successfully redeemed using VPN.
    Now turned off VPN and im to converting it to Ultimate pass but it wont allow me. It will say "You currently have a subscription from a different region. If it still doesnt work please contact customer support".
    This is a brand new xbox account.
    Please advise what mistake I made here.

        I think i found out what's wrong. I forgot to change the region of my account,still new Zealand and now its asking me new zealand card for payment for the ultimate pass. I wonder if ill change the region to Australia now then ill buy one more 12 month xbox gold live then redeem via vpn, will the first too codes will concert to Australia?

            @richard86: Did you have any luck working this out Richard? I'm in the same boat, for some reason my Xbox account was in the UK region not Australia so now I can't upgrade to GamePass Ultimate!

            Would be nice to add this step in the OP too iambRad.

            EDIT: Was able to fix this by buying a global 1 month GamePass Ultimate code from eneba, keeping my UK address in my account/billing info and then redeeming the code.

            Definitely recommend adding this information to the OP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FYI to anyone checking this thread, I just resubscribed for 36 months (3x12 month Turkish keys for $149 via Gamivo) and only had to pay $1 (not $15.95) to upgrade to ultimate.

    I'm not sure if there's a $1 ultimate upgrade promo going right now for lapsed subs, but it might be worth checking out. The upgrade to ultimate page said "1 month of ultimate for $1" but my account was upgraded up until the end of my sub (2/11/2025). My sub only lapsed yesterday by the way.

    To anyone wondering, I just completed this again this morning successfully.

    expired 2 weeks ago
    bought 2 * 12 months from eneba
    did the turkey vpn shuffle
    redeemed codes, although i had to have a few goes here because it at first told me it was bought for the wrong region, just waited 10 minutes and it worked
    turned off vpn
    did the upgrade to utlimate, icon said $1 but after clicking through it cost me 15.95
    all worked fine added no issues

    could get it cheaper i guess, i cbf mucking around anymore today.

    Anyone tried this and got the error "This purchase conflicts with one or more of your current subscriptions"? This is after entering the first key successfully, it's the two subsequent codes where it throws up that error.

    I tried the same suggestions in the RiskPolicyRejected advice with no success.

    Just done mine. 3 x 12 Month Turkey from Gamivo using Windscribe. (3% off code was the best I could find without having to join SMART).
    They wanted $15.95 for the 1 month upgrade so I used 12000 of my Microsoft rewards points for a 1 Month Ultimate code and applied that instead.
    Avoided mtcgame just in case. No issues encountered.
