    Does Fire Stick support chromecast?

    • +7

isnt chromecast google equivalent of fire stick?

    • +3

TLDR: If you just want to watch something on your device on the tv, FireStick is fine.

The point is, what are you watching? If its mainstream apps like Netflix, 7Plus, youtube - instead of casting your phone to Firestick, you can directly download the app and watch on the Firestick, which is a separate android device, but instead of touchscreen its remote controlled (makes it painful to enter login details the first time).

      Longer version:
Apple has Airplay, Google has Chromecast.

But HDMI cables are universal and work on all devices. Firestick has Miracast/screenmirroring - it's like a wireless HDMI cable to mirror your device on screen. For most people, this is fine.

Some people might prefer Chromecast - like sometimes you cast a video but you can still browse an app or do something else. With Miracast, everything on your phone screen is on the TV screen. (But if you want to do this on firestick, just watch the app on the firestick without casting then go multitask on your phone)

Another difference is that with Firestick you have to turn on screen mirroring before you can detect it, you can't leave the option there permanently (I think).

To make it more confusing, Chromecast (the device) and most android have miracasting built in (as well as chromecasting), but Apples do not have miracast…but do work with Chromecast. But Firestick can still get the Apple TV app, if that's what you need.

Imagine if Amazon price-matched, then stack with the 40% off code

    • +1

Would be nice but I dont' think it would be possible even if the price was to drop. It says 40% off RRP. So code may just make the price a flat $59 everytime.

      • Oh, I thought it was flat $40 off, regardless of price. My bad.

    Here’s mine.

  • Received Fire stick 4k MAX yesterday. Its blazing fast. Watched a 16gb movie on Stremio last night and there was buffering issue or lag.

Have this previous version 4k stick as well, which is still good for everyday streaming but bigger Stremio files struggles a bit.

    • +5

You said it's blazing fast, but still lags and buffers wtih 16gb movie? Or you meant "there was NO buffering issue or lag"?

    • +5

      Sorry for typo.
I mean NO buffering or lag on new MAX stick.

      • Thanks for clarifying.

  • -4

Amazon offers same $29 for Prime member, saw a banner while browsing last night

    • +2

That's the Fire TV Stick Lite, 1080p only, whereas this is 4K.

    • +1

It seems to be for people taking a Prime trial.
Is there a link I can use to get the $29 deal as a Prime member?

  • Is it true the UI is actually 4K unlike android TV? where's its limited to 1080p

  • would I benefit from fire stick if I already have apple tv? We only have iphones and PCs

    • +2

Unless you have an older Apple TV that cannot do 4K and/or H.265 content - I'd stick with it. Far superior and no ads in the UI.

      • +2

Thanks. Mine is 4K. Only thing I don't like on apple tv is it shows stuff I need to pay to watch instead of just what I have access to. those "recommendations" aren't much different from ads tbh

        • Yeah that's fair. That is annoying - I've only found that happen in the 'Apple TV+' app on Apple TV - whereas on Google TV and Fire TV stick it's the first thing you see and you can't move it down in priority like you can on Apple TV

    • Alexa is superior to Siri. I like the whisper mode :)

  • +3

I got both Firestick 4K and Chromecast with GoogleTV
I would say for home use, I still prefer Google TV given it comes with native integration with Google Home and chromecast

But I do enjoy the Firestick 4K when travelling as the design is slimmer and easy to carry
Sideloading app to Firestick is also easy using a Android phone with the same wifi network
and love the "Disney+" button on the remote

Note: I know people will say about Firestick UI is much better than Google TV
But for me, I usually just open the app I am going to use (mainly Youtube, Netflix and Disney+) so its not a big issue

    • +1

Honestly, UI on both sucks and Firestick UI is atrocious when updated because of the banner ads, I just use Wolf Launcher instead

    • +2

I like the Amazon remote better. UI same same. I chose to stick with google chromecast since I have a pixel. Google pixel won't let you share screen with Amazon firestick coz they don't like each other lol

    • I prefer Firestick 4k, because I already have a Google Nest and Chromecast for mirroring screen from laptop.

But I need a device to play prime videos works with Dolby audio systemand runs Kodi smooth with no issues, whilst i have prime subscription already. I will never subscribe to Youtube and Google movies/tv.

It is very easy to block Youtube ADs what not using Adblocker, Raspberry Pi Pi Hole, DNS workarounds. Google movies library is not that great compare to NetFlix and Prime

    • Sideloading app to Firestick is also easy using a Android phone with the same wifi network….

      Please explain.

  • Does this offer a lot more than the Prime TV preloaded on my Sony TV?

    • Yes, you can add third-party apps for a lot more free content.

      • I also have the same question as i have no issues in accessing Prume content. Do you mind shariing any notabke 3rd party apps that we can get using the firestick. I am not sure if I need to get another remote tbh..

        • Popcon Times, Stremio, IPTV for free to air channels .. I think you can do the basic remote functions with a firestick remote as well (on, off, volume up or down) etc.
There are tons of video on what apps you can install on it (which your TV won't allow)

  • Can you still Plex easily with this?
Google search shows old links saying you can not sure if still current..

    • +1

Yes you can. I've installed Plex on Fire TV stick (both SD and 4K)

  • Is this the latest Firestick 4k that was released (in Aust) last week?

    • +1

No, thats 4k MAX this is 4k.

    • +1

      No

    Fire tv codes not working

    • They're not generic. Go to the megathread linked above and request one.

  • I bought 2 Sunday.. Now just bought another 2 and gonna have to return some on the older higher $$ invoice..haha

  • i just realised i had a code the whole time here is mine if anyone wants it 92UCPWWKSOGFQK

    • Tried to use this code, some one else is already used it.

    • Thanks fir sharing the code..

  • Not the same deal, but I have some codes from the Amazon deals if anyone wants them

    Firestick - 40% off
    D3D8-QAU2M2-YNMDC9

    Echo Show8 - $60 off
    PCMA-YABLHG-9SYUCM
    PCBL-JQO3U2-82LWC3

  • Funny how it says 60% off in the description:

Excludes delivery charges. 60% off^ will be calculated from the current ticket price.

  • Bought one! thank you :)

  • Don’t need it, got one.

    Buy now regret later.

      Don’t need it, got one.

Bad for your wallet. Bad for the planet.

  • I would think Amazon will beat this price in the coming days as it is also trying to get rid of the old version (as they released the new revision couple of days back). Currently the old version firestick 4k and the new version firestick 4k Max is at $99.00. For those people who got 40% off code from Amazon can use that and bring the price little bit down

    • Does the Amz 40% off code work on the 4k Max version $99 price!?

      • +2

I did check this, it works only on the previous version of 4K stick and not the Max one

    • +1

Amazon hardly ever overlaps their promotions, they have it locked down and will keep it at $99 until the offer ends most likely.

  • -1

Damn, coupon already used. Appreciate another one please….

  • +2

FYI, this is 100% clearing the old stock. The "Max" version is 40% more powerful and supposed to be a great update.

    • Australia will probably be the dumping ground for the existing 4K Firestick from other regions. Remember how long it took Amazon Australia to list the 4K for sale?

      • +1

latest is already listed for same price as previous 4K - just pre-order though. Coming end Oct

      • +1

Believe it or not, we got it same day as the US. In fact my 4K Max actually got delivered here in Sydney on launch day (last Friday). I had pre-ordered a week earlier.

It's very good, but it's my first Firestick, my first fire-anything, so I can't really comment on it versus the previous model.

  • This is a good deal. They must be overstocked obviously so I bought another one.
There are ways to install other apps like Kodi so then you can manage all your media including your photos, and add on channels.
Good for TVs like Samsung that don't support Kodi. Not really required for the latest Sonys, but may help older ones that are a bit slow.

    • -1

Kodi is a dinosaur these days, give Syncler a try for a much nicer UI and overall experience :)

      • +1

Kodi is a dinosaur these days, give Syncler

        Lol. No.

      • Thanks for the rec, I'll give it a go. I like trying them all and currently run Plex, Emby and Kodi for different things. I use Kodi (Diggz Repo) for Debrid/Seren/Trakt for TV and Movies, so I'll see how this compares. Kodi has a lot of customisation though which I doubt the simplicity of others could replace.

        • +1

Happy to get negged by those stuck in their ways but I stick by my opinion. Your welcome though mate.

          • @sk3iron: Gave it a go, very very basic- the sort of thing I'd setup for a non-tech person…or an Apple user. It just didn't have the depth of control available in Kodi, it's very very shallow with only really basic customisation. If you know how to activate Trakt and Debrid then you'd have the level of knowledge to work one of the many Kodi builds, from simple to complex- and some look quite similar to that Netflix vibe. So Syncler is a thumbs down from me, except in certain usage scenarios.

          • @sk3iron: https://youtu.be/q_Q2XX0sGvY?t=944

Here's DiggzFlix, for example, very easy to install any repo. I haven't tried this one but you'll get the gist- the UI is modern.

    • Can you shed some light on Kodi ? Is plex its competitor ?

      • +1

You can download it here on several platforms. Maybe try on your pc and have a play around:
        https://kodi.tv/download/

For more advanced addons can start with the following. Opens up so many channels and takes ads away from some normal streaming apps:
        https://www.matthuisman.nz/2020/02/slyguy-kodi-repository.ht…

      • Can you shed some light on Kodi ? Is plex its competitor ?

Kodi (previously known as XBMC) has been around since 2004. I'm sure Google will have a wealth of info.

Plex was originally forked off XBMC.

      • I would say kodi excels in its large library of add ons that may or may not be pirating (if you can deal with 720 or 1080p), and this stick works very well with kodi.
