                    • @boban: I'm using 496.13 and -400 / +1350 for core / mem
I've elevated the rear to get better airflow the hotspot is measuring 67.4 degrees

                      • @Tavisophical: Increase your mem clock speed to 1600 and see if it holds.

                        • +1

@boban: When I did this overnight, my wattage decreased from 95w to 80w causing a reduction in hashrate

I had to reboot/wait for the laptop to idle then start up OCTune again to get it to run at 95w

Been running it for a few hours at 95w with no issues getting around 40.5 mh/s which I'm pretty happy with
                          Running at -500 / +1400 stable

                  • @Tavisophical: The Nvidia control panel should confirm this under 'System Information' and it will show you max TGP. You can also download HWInfo to see, live, how much power it's using.

              • @Tavisophical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBR5VEdS4xc

Not in English but just follow the steps and you'll get 95w unlock and probably 40+mh

        • +1

As a curiosity, I tried to take out the battery and it cannot pull 95w. The max can only be reached with the battery in.

      • +1

Based on this the machine will pay itself in 1 year and 3 months (461 days)

        • 79% yield.

          not bad

        • too many ifs that is, no breakdown when operating 24/7…ETH PoS not coming soon/postponed…and crypto price not tanking or still there in one yr (joking)

          • @mountaineer: Even if you don't hit ROI it's good that we can get a price offset given the price hike. Personally get a laptop for the parents and for when my friends comes over but you can't justify buying a laptop this expensive for those reasons unless you can get something back. Plus, if it doesn't burn up you could probably sell it.

      • Yeah it's not bad considering no need for riser/mobo psu etc. Only thing bad is it's Intel and they are terrible for monero mining on nicehash which drops profitability.

        • +1

Don't mine with the CPU, you have to remember that a laptop only has a limited amount of thermal dissipation due to space and fan constraints. Pushing up the CPU to mine will increase the temps and throttle the GPU. If you have to mine, mine using the GPU only.

          • @boban: yeah u are probably right.

Even still, if u put in the cpu in calculator its coming up at negative return.

I bit the bullet. I had heaps of leftover harvey norman gift cards from that 6800xt dud refund.

    • That's why it's best budget gaming

    • Just bought one. Will it be safe to mine? Any fire safety precautions I need to take?

      • Just don't put it on the bed

        • Do you know what fans are recommended to put underneath? Thanks.

          • @BluebirdV: mine seems fine sitting on some wire racks. any fans will do . thats just bonus

  • Regret not getting the Razer 1660Ti for $1300 odd.
Would this 3060 be 20% better than 1660Ti?

Such a good deal considering current GPU prices.

  • Looking to get a gaming laptop to play the latest games (when I have time) and last me 5+ years. No room in my apartment for a desktop with kids.

Should I get this laptop? Do I need to add more ram? If so, is it easy to install more ram?
    Thanks

    • +11

It's very good value in the current PC gaming market
Definitely worth upgrading the RAM and it is very easy.
      1. Buy another 8GB 3200MHz DDR4 SODIMM module
      2. Open up the back
      3. Insert the module into the DIMM slot (it just clicks in place)
      4. Close the back
      5. Done!

Edit: Here's a video on how to do it

      • Is the clock speed 3200mhz? I can't find any information on it. That video says intel processors are usually 2666mhz.

        • +1

this CPU can run DDR4 at 2933

so get DDR4-3200 RAM and you'll be good. DDR4-3200 is more widespread than DDR4-2933, can run at 2933, and you can use it in your next 3200 system when time comes

        • +1

          It's 2933MHz according to notebookcheck
It's easier to find 3200MHz RAM than 2933MHz and using 3200 RAM will just run at 2933 without issue

          Edit: Ninja'd

          • @FireRunner: Will this work?
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-PC4-25600-SODIMM-260-Pin-M…

I assume it has a single 8gb stick already, which will bring it to 16gb total?

            • +1

@tanka2d: Yeah that should work and yes, specs say it already has 1x 8GB RAM

              • @FireRunner: Is there risk of mixing and matching different RAM brands and speeds?

                • @Blitzfx: RAM is pretty standardised nowadays, it's unlikely to have issues especially with well known like Crucial.
I've heard some OEM desktops have issues with RAM though I think it was running at the rated speed and had something to do with XMP profiles.
Not applicable to this laptop in any case.

      • Thanks for that. Can anyone recommend a good deal for the extra 8GB 3200MHz DDR4 SODIMM module?

      • Doesn't that void the warranty?

        • +1

Definitely not. Opening up the laptop and upgrading things like storage and RAM doesn’t affect warranty

    • +1

      this plays latest games fine

I play Control, Ghostrunner, all smooth and enjoyable

    • Thanks for the replies. Will jump on this deal. Where would I buy the extra ram? And does it need to be a specific brand?

  • +1

Is this only a good deal when considering the currently inflated GPU prices or a good deal in general? I've been waiting for an entry-level gaming desktop deal but only because I heard laptops aren't great for future-proofing (hard to upgrade parts etc. - although does it matter if you don't know what parts go best with what anyway?). I just need one for general use and occasionally playing games with my racing wheel (without buying a console).

    • +2

Its a good deal in general.

    • +1

This is a super deal IMO in the current climate

this is still an ok deal in normal times, there are drawbacks but laptop 3060 is actually quite ok.

    • How much of a good deal is this? I'm in the market for a gaming laptop but hasn't been following the specs details. What would you expect the 'standard' price of this spec laptop?

Can I get a similarly powered desktop for this price if I don't care about the laptop form?

    • Its a good deal.

  • +2

Just bought one. I do believe is a big step forward from my desktop GTX 760. Trying to get the amd 6600 for about $600 but couldn't find any places have stock.

I will get an USB C cable to DP and another 8 GB Ram.

    • There's a HDMI port on the laptop if you're monitor supports that

    • Any chance you could try some crypto mining and update with what hashrate you are getting?

  • +1

    bought one, thanks

  • +2

For the love of God get this with 16GB of RAM.

    • +3

Should cost about $50 to buy an 8GB 3200MHz and install it yourself.
The performance increase will be night and day in some games

  • +1

Is this the best bang for buck gaming laptop around? It appears as though nothing gets within $400 of it for a 3060 GPU.

    • Pretty much. I reckon it's going to get sold out any second, so if anyone's on the fence, get in quick!

    • I would say totally yes

can hardly get 1650 ti at this price, while 3060 runs circles around it

  • +1

is it ok to use it as a desktop?? I got a predator monitor, and just want to play BF2042.. lol!!

    • Yeah, it has HDMI-out so you can connect to monitor and play on that

    • Yup 100%.

Put this laptop by the side and boom you've now got a dual monitor setup!

  • +3

bring back the 11th gen for $80 more

    • Was wondering if there was much difference between 10th and 11th gen laptop i5, right off the bat I found 11th gen is 6core/12thread instead of 4core/8thread
Definitely worth $80 more if it was still available. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to be that price anytime soon though

      • Listed @ $1119 but OOS too!

Looks like the i7-11800H is listed @ $1154 OOS too! Man that would be the deal of the year if it ever goes back in stock at that price!

    • yeah I was bummed I missed that one, but I got this one for $1149 and I think I am good

  • got a MSI GS65 8SE-053AU, and wondering whether to hold for BF/CM deals or jump on this …..

    wish I could post a poll …

  • +1

Anybody here actually purchased this from HN and could post your mining hashrate? Very interested to see what a laptop like this would produce.

    • people reported hashrates above

    • +3

I would also be keen to know the weedrate

    • This is why we can't have good things and GPUs are at an all time high.

      • And yet we're getting a bargain priced laptop…

        • Mostly referring to desktop GPUs, this is a bargain in today's climate, but a good deal otherwise.

  • Is click and collect from Hardly Normal reliable? I'm not going to get stooged if I decide to click and collect instead of pay the $20 delivery fee?

    • +4

Call up to ensure stock is available. I can confirm their stock allocations on website is not always accurate

      • Just called the store i am going to pickup and they have it ready. Nunawading store.

    • I ordered and mine is already ready for collection

  • Do Harvey Norman even allow layby anymore?

  • +2

is this deal so good that people aren't checking in to say "dont buy from Gerry he's a fraud"?

dammit Gerry you won this one it seems

    • Lol

    • Am I the only one avoid HN just because they are pretty shady when it comes to warranties?

  • Damn that's a good price. Makes the HP 2070 RTX for $1500 look like a bad deal. Although that had an gen 10 i7, which is probably a bit better with more cores and 16Gb of ram

    • it also had a better screen. but 2070 is made using older process, I would still choose 3060 over that

I might upgrade the screen on this Acer once I run out of official warranty. a lot of options on AliExpress within $200 delivered

  • Just wondering how much improvement for this laptop compare to my Dell G7 1060 MaxQ?

    • +1

      About double

  • -3

Keep in mind that the RTX 3060 on this laptop has a significantly lower TDP than others, it performs closer to a 1660 or even a 1650. Plus the laptop is just shit in general. Source: read reviews

    • +2

      Reference them please.

    • +2

It performs closer to a 1660 or even a 1650

With a second stick of RAM it performs within 5% of a Legion 5 with a 115-130W TGP 3060 which is not bad considering this is a 85-95W 3060.

In it's stock configuration it somehow performs worse than a 1660ti but that is easy fixable with a $50 stick of RAM. Otherwise, for it's price it's not particular shit. The Dell G15 which is close in terms of price to performance (e.g. 5600H/RTX3050 for $899) also has the same display issues.

      • +1

Plus the 3060 brings dlss which will be more and more useful
And for some applications the 3060 architecture has benefits

    • upgraded from 1660Ti Metabox to this. solid increase in framerates in Ghostrunner and Control

so.. I dunno, facts are facts

  • Just ordered with 5% off gift cards from my health insurer so another $60 off
    Fair bargain.

This will be my 4th 3060 laptop for mining, will see how it compares

    • -1

Good stuff mate. I've bought one too to give it a gander. :)

    • What are you using to control core clocks and mem speed?

      • Nicehash oc tune as part of quickminer

  • Just a question, is this better than this one?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i7-11…

    This one got 4gb

    Thank you

  • For extra game storage would it be better to get a 2TB 2.5 SSD or 1TB M.2 SSD ? Any performance differences?

    • I ended up with 2 1Tb SSD's and one 2Tb HDD in this machine. in this order:
      1. added 1Tb into vacant M.2 slot
      2. upgraded original 512Gb SSD to 1Tb
      3. added 2Tb of spinning drive for archiving games I don't actively play

Alternatively just add both 1Tb drive and 2Tb HDD and bind them together via Storage Spaces? This will give you a 3Tb drive and Windows will decide what to store on fast or slow portion of it.

      • is the inbuilt hard drive on a SATA port of the M.2 slot?

        • +1

          m.2
