Laptop with RTX3060 below $1,200 is a bargain!

  • Thanks OP - bought one + purchased an extra 8GB of RAM from Amazon.

  • At this price I count resist and bought one. The HN person gave me a piece of paper with pricing for extended warranty. And also offered that they upgrade my ram to 16gb. For only $200 for the ram.

    If that's not a bargain

    • NGL 16gb for $200 sounds steep

    • Hahahahaha

  • I've found that the lifespan of plastic builds is significantly lower than metal ones. My first all plastic HP melted off and cracked a chunk of the frame near the heating vent after 3 years of use. Second was a $2k MSI, which broke off at the screen hinges after 3-4 years of use and soon after random sections near ports started cracking off and had to be glued back on. At this point it's more glue than actual frame.
And as much as I hate overpriced Apple laptops, it been the most reliable of any laptop I've owned because of its sturdy build.
    Plastic builds : Avoid

    • Guess most people buying this as a desktop replacement , but i agree.
For the price you won't find metal though, probably 1.5x this

  • Got a call to pick up the laptop. The salesman was quoting $149 to purchase additional 8GB ram and the warranty would still be valid as they would install it for me. He also quoted product care replace 2 years for $329 ($164.50/yr) or 3 years for $469 ($156.33/yr). If I purchased the ram from them, they will charge me 3 years product care for $329 ($109.67/yr). If the battery degraded during the product care period, they would replace the battery for free.

    • And that's how they make their money.
For that money you should get 16gb of ram

That product care is generally 100% commission and covers things that your warranty already covers.

    • +1

Almost 50% of the device cost worth of upsell.. Why not just buy a new model in 3 years?

Upgrading ram does not void warranty, breaking a laptop while upgrading ram will void it though. Depending on the manufacturer you can even send laptops in for repairs with the upgrades in it, but most people change the parts back to stock in the event of a warranty return to avoid questions.

    • $149 gets you 16GB

  • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/657709 is this model also posted worth the extra money ???

    • If you needs lots more CPU, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-10300H-vs-Inte…

Ram to 16GB is $100, so you are paying $300 for the CPU upgrade. Unclear if you would see the 10300H starving the GPU at 1080p. Likely one stick of ram is the biggest issue, adding another 8gb stick will remove potential memory bottlenecks.

For example I use an i7-7700K (similar perf and same core count as the 10300H) with my desktop 3080 and I don't have any issues, though the CPU is near maxed out in the latest games likely because the GPU is maxed out first running at near 4K. A 3080 would starve with my CPU at lower res, higher frame rates.

$1200 + 8GB ram upgrade is a bargain. If you don't want to muck around upgrading ram and be assured the CPU is not starving the GPU ever … the extra $300ish could be worth it. More future proof for future games.

  • How does this compare to my current desktop? 16gb ram gtx 1070 and i7 7th gen. I do find my desktop sometimes struggling on games like red dead and apex.

    • A 3060 laptop is a substantial enough upgrade over a desktop 1070 to warrant an upgrade imo

    • +2

Oops, I meant NOT a substantial upgrade from you're current PC

  • What is the RRP for this model?

    • $1598.

  • Picked this up a while ago for $1298 (but game with the free Logitech gaming gear which I sold for $150), no complaints so far. Gaming is very solid, runs MSFS (and other games) really well on High Settings at 1080p.

Excellent value for money, will upgrade the RAM to 16GB at some stage

  • Would jump on this if it had the Ryzen 5/7 cpu. They are supposed to be more powerful, efficient and cheaper! Does that mean a model with the Ryzen variant would be cheaper than the Intel variants?

    • Seriously, how cheap do you want it?

      • +5

        This is ozbargain right?

  • I paid $1000 for this one and bought another ram make it total 16g (8+8), great little laptop only thing i don't like is the noise of the fan..

    • +1

      When was it $1000?

  • Can anyone please advise on how this laptop will perform with Lumion, looking to get one for my sis.

  • Sorry if this is a silly question, but what would a desktop PC with similar specs normally cost (normally as in before COVID/after the current GPU shortage has resolved)?

    • Probably around the same

  • Mine is on backorder. Anyone else the same?

    • Online order? all the shops in Sydney area around me have stocks.

      • Canberra

        • I just ordered for click and collect from Fyshwick. Says in stock.

          • @kiiitos: Did you receive an email to collect?

Oh I just got a notification to collect.

            • @yycan: Yeah i just got email to collect too. They called and tried to sell me 8gb RAM for $200. lol. I ordered off ebay for $55.

  • one of the worst laptop in all the 3060 models. but for this price, I will say go for it.

    • Is that because it's an Acer?

      • +1

not because the brand, Acer actually produce some very good quality models, but this one is not one of them. Just cheap, very good to play some game before the Mining frenzy is over.

      • +1

It's a laptop geared towards the budget-orientated consumer/gamer. There will be compromises in terms of build, thermals, screen, etc. As an overall package coupled with that gpu? It's a bargain.

  • I'm thinking of buying this to replace my desktop which is an i7 4770 16gb RAM with a ATI R7950 GPU.

Current desktop has dual monitors set-up would this laptop support two external monitors? And I assume run better than my current desktop??

    • +1

Definitely. Basically in every area imaginable it will out perform it - especially in the graphics department

      • Thank you

Do you know if it has dual video output for my current dual monitors

        • I believe it has output via hdmi and usb c so yes is can support two monitors and I also think it might also have thunderbolt 4 so a dock can be connected.

  • Does anybody know how you get the Guardians of the Galaxy code? Is it emailed to you later?

    • +2

Looks like you need to claim it though Acer with proof of purchase

      • +1

Thanks for the link - received my code this morning.

        • How long did it take for the code?

I wait for 2 day so far

    • Theres also a promotion through Intel for Riders Republic
Haven't tested yet but has the option for Harvey Norman as a retailer

      • Thanks @jsediv. I am submitting a claim now.

Here is the link for anyone needs them
        Intel Promo

        • It is asking for a master key. Where do I find that?

      • +1

Just tried and got submission denied as the deadline for this promotion has passed

        • Yes mine got denied as well.

I guess we cant double dip as HN is currently running the marvel promo already.
I dont play FPS game so I will be trying to sell mine cheaper than the RRP :p

  • Just curious, could you even get the GPU out and into another build? Only ever mucked around with desktops, but jumped in for my first gaming laptop as this seems like a killer deal.

    • +1

No it's integrated to the Motherboard

  • Hey is the warranty worth the the 1/3 of the price of the device over 3 years?

    • I went in store and got 1 extra year warranty for $99. Not sure if that is a good price. My bargaining skills are not that good.

      • Extended warranties are generally a fallacy and if you have enough perseverance you can generally get anything repaired if its within a reasonable timeframe (Laptop = 3+ years) just threaten ACCC or Ombudsman

        • For a TV I am onboard with warranty, and has served well in the past with replacements and upgrades over the years, the cost of a 75" or 85" LCD is super expensive. A laptop outside of warranty, for the parts that would typically be damaged I would just look at a self repair or Acer Service Center as it'll probably cost less than the price of the warranty to fix if you do have an issue, and that's only in the event you do have an issue.

    • You have two years of warranty anyways on it

      • Official warranty looks to be only 12 months though as khepri as pointed out, you can argue it should last 3+ years

  • +1

Bit the bullet, disappeared from my cart as was no longer in stock at only close store… then remembered theres a Domayne around the corner from the Harvey Norman, still available there - ordered… been looking at desktop upgrades for the past 12 months and dying watching the prices go up, this will be an upgrade on a 4th gen i5 and a 3gb 7950 that has held up surprisingly well since 2013!!!

  • -3

Can I get this without Windows ? How much can I get off, if possible ?

  • Bought one.

    Wonder how it'll compare to my i9 1660 16gb PC…

Also ordered another 8gb ram from the above Amazon link.

    Cheers!

  • +1

    anyone want to share settings?

    getting 38.2 with -423 and +1043

    • Thanks for sharing this. Was hoping it would get into the 40s but doesnt look like it has enough power to get there.

      • +1

Actually I've found - 500 and 500 to be better. A bit less hash but stable at 37.5.

This is just the default bios without tweaking the power draw.

    • which bios you using? latest bios, best I have 37.5, draw 110w from the wall, so not bad.

    • +2

      Marked out at 37.5
      -500 +500
      85w power
Strange that dropping gpu speed doesn't drop wattage

My asus TUf gets similar hash but dropped down to 68w.
      More tweaking required

Bios that's supposed to up to 95w doesn't seem to work either

      • I had mine at 95w last night getting me 41 mh/s, but now it won't go above 80w and 35 mh/s for some reason… very annoying

        • Bring speed down a bit
Restarting the nvidia driver will bring it back up

    • I'm getting 41 from -500 and +1500

  • +1

    Does this one https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i7-11…
    for extra $400 makes sense?

and is it possible to switch off the GPU on those Acer Nitro laptops when you are not playing to save the battery?

    • +1

In my opinion, yeah. CPU is much better and already has 16gb ram.
Although its single channel, not dual. Can chuck another 16gb 3200mhz in there for around $130
      Did this yesterday :)

      • +1

Thanks mate I'm going to purchase another 16gb 3200mhz and SSD

        • Good choice. Theres an extra slot for an M.2 drive and a 2.5" drive.
The cable connector for the 2.5" drive is a little fiddly. Poor placement IMO

  • +1

Make sure to upgrade memory to 2x8gb DUAL RANK
    It comes with single Rank.

    • There is not much difference between single rank and dual rank memory, in fact single rank is faster.

Don't get this all confused with single and dual channel, which makes a huge difference.

People don't have to replace the existing ram, you can just add a second stick.

      • That is not true.

Complete wrong say that single rank is faster than dual. Not even sure you got this information.

        Check it out.

        https://youtu.be/R7CO9v9rpOk

          Overview
Generally Single Rank Memory is faster than Dual Rank Memory, in layman’s terms when a computer accesses Single Rank Memory it only has to go around the track once, where are Dual Rank it would have to go around the track twice.

That article is probably wrong/old, But yeah who knows, they are both pretty fast, we're talking "millionths of a second" for both types.

          • @Pittyh: Real world is not a table of specifications.

  • Need a laptop for my son starting high school next year. He won't be getting it until Christmas. Would it be best to wait until Black Friday, or get this one and put it away?

    • +1

It's a good deal but if you're not specifically looking for something gaming-oriented I would recommend not rushing in here and doing a bit of research in preparation for Black Friday. An issue with school laptops is battery life. You want it to last the whole day, without needing to add a chunky and heavy power bank a year or so in. Those two items in a single laptop bag can also risk a cracked screen, as happened in our case.

Also weight. The school bags are notoriously heavy already. There is a Yoga Slim 7 Carbon coming out soon, that will weigh 1.1kg and could be in your price range. AMD 5800U OLED. It might not suit an avid gamer, but it could tick a lot of other boxes for a high school laptop.
