It is better if you have the knowledge to install appropriate softwares and setting. I have spent countless hours on Freenas with mine but is not happy with the slow transfer of data over gigabyte network. I am now using windows server, much happier.

I have recently acquire a Readynas NV+ V2 and the setup is very simple. Its speed is better than Freenas but slower than Windows Server.

Freenas transfer speed is around 6-40mb/sec.
      ReadyNas V+ V2 is around 20-60mb/sec.
      Windows Server is around 40-120mb/sec.

      • There is something wrong with your Freenas configuration if you're only getting 6-40mb/s. I get 60-90mb/s write speeds to the NAS and sustained 80MB/s+ copying from it.

        • I am running freenas 8 as I have 8GB ram. I understand version 8 is constantly under development but the progress and improvement is rather slow. I don't have the time to do that. One of the recent update destroys the smb sharing with other computers, this is frustrating.

    • this craps all over any branded NAS cus you can install whatever OS and customise it. For 200 bucks !

      • +2

You pay for convenience on an off the shelf NAS

Un-ability to change the NAS system itself is the inconvenience…

Hi guys! Just heard that new stock is due to arrive around the 4th of April. The supplier is making a loss on these and there is a good chance the price will go up when the next batch arrives. Orders placed and paid before then will be locked in at the current price.

Total qty ordered from HP is 1000, approximately 100 are currently reserved.

We will allocate orders as payment is received. Keep in mind that BPAY/Direct Deposit payments can take 1-3 days to clear.

If we hear any futher news, will post here.

    • +5

Why would the supplier be selling these at a loss? Doesn't make sense. Doesn't sound right.

      • -4

The supplier isn't selling them at a loss, someone just made that up to make the deal sound better.

        • +2

In the blue corner DessyTek. In the red corner Megabuy.

If only everyone could agree on price, and whether there was any stock.

        • +8

Just like Nevabuy makes up stock quantities on their website?

        • +3

Why is MegaBuy even commenting on this thread? Got nothing to do with you. You guys are gonna lose your "little" customer base with this kind of arrogance!!

        • From what I understand, there's a deal with HP where the supplier places a large order for other HP stock, on condition they get these at a huge discount. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but the supplier says they're making a loss. They may need to sell a certain amount to meet HP requirements, really don't know.

        • So DessyTek isn't the supplier and HP isn't the supplier? ie The supplier is someone in between DessyTek and HP? So you're saying they commit to buying and moving a whole lot of other HP products and get these 'thrown in' at a cheap price as an incentive reward - which enables you to pick them up from them and on-sell at a cheap price?

        • +2

Sorry by supplier I mean wholesaler. From what I understand thats how it works, though don't quote me, I can only pass on what they tell me ;)

    • I think it's entirely possible to make a loss or only break even on these as PC margins are notoriously slim and we're not talking about the supplier's purchase price here. All the overheads that go into business obviously need to be factored in as well as the GST (they obviously don't pocket this).

    • Hi DessyTek,

I ordered one and opted to pay by BPay. The biller code came up was 73239. When I paid from my bankaccount the name of this biller code was "Bidbox online stores". Is this correct?

      • That's correct, we opened a number of stores including DessyTek some years ago. We are in the process of going back to one big BidBox.com.au in the next few months though.

  • Bought one about a month ago as a media server.

Am using Ubuntu 10.04 Server on a 120Gb laptop HDD in the DVD bay (bought a BZ-525B Adapter) and 3TB drive for storage.

Running ZFS, Samba and PS3 Media Server.

Transfer speed to the machine seems to be about 50mb/s.

Plan to add either 2 or 3 more 3tb drives either mirrored or Raidz1.

    • How are you running ZFS on top of Ubuntu? zfs-fuse or zfsonlinux?

      • ZFSonlinux

  • +2

Does anyone know how much power these use when idle?

  • These are fabulous machines for home NAS or media center, I got the previous model, with slower 1.3GHz CPU.

    Very quiet.

  • I am sitting on the fence with this deal, would this be powerful enough for a private webserver?

    • Unless you're doing some crazy amount of SQL or have wildly inefficient website code, you'll be fine. Serving web pages of any kind isn't exactly an intensive operation - you'll only start running into problems if you have lots (hundreds) of simultaneous users.

      • Agreed with the above user, although keep in mind upload bandwidth of your internet connection could be fairly low and thus might be better off just getting a VPS in a data centre if speed is required…

  • Hi Anyone pls tell me how to do a backorder, since they say backorder available.
    Thanks

    • Click on the Shopping Cart Icon .. The one in Reddish orange with white shopping cart.

      • thanks a lot

I feel as though I MUST buy one. I have been interested in NAS the past week and seeing this, it must be a sign from God. Can anyone advise of a helpful guide to NAS and this MicroServer? There was one listed but was about 5 years old.

  • Ok, so how does this compare to the NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000 v2 which was here on OzBargain not long ago for $248? I missed out on that and wondering if I should go this instead.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/64709

    • I managed to get a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ V2 on that deal and because of the limited addons and features of the NV+ makes this deal very tempting.

    • This would definitely perform better than than the NV+. However you will need to install OS on it, freeware or windows.

This also has hdd 4 slots with a possibility of a 5th with a simple bios flash.

This is definitely better for the money as it has more upgrade options.

  • For those people running ESXi, did you buy it from the VMware US site, or a local Aussie reseller? Great find OP!

    • +2

I got my Esxi5 as download from the VMWare site - free licence but you have to go through the register hoops. Reading some of the many threads on the N40L, HP have their own version but I had already installed the VMWare downloaded one.
Once you get it on USB, install is a breeze.

      • Cool -thanks for the tip! I didn't know there was a free version of ESXi (vSphere Hypervisor under the Free Products section on the VMware products page). Can't wait to get the N40L to start setting it all up - sweet!

For those that are interested I was running a personal webserver with about 6 sites (very little traffic), squid proxy for the various PC's in my house, Twonky for all my music, movies and photo's and a public Minecraft server all on a $200 Netbook with an external USB hard drive but only 1G of RAM. You don't need a grunty box to do "normal" stuff, however you do need grunt if you want to do any on the fly transcoding of video or playing 1080p directly off the box. A netbook makes a perfect server as it draws bugga all power, has a tiny footprint and comes with a built in screen, keyboard, mouse and UPS. Mine has been running 24x7 for the past two years in my hall cupboard without an issue.

I purchased an N40L to replace the netbook a few weeks ago and absolutely love it! Minecraft used to make the netbook start to swap due to a lack of RAM, the N40L with only the standard 2G or RAM hasn't swapped once. These devices are amazing for the price. The build quality is typical HP, awesome!

    • so this works on my $199 netbook? that's pretty awesome

      • Yep, I use a $200 netbook with a USB HDD connected via 100Mb ethernet and it streams 1080P fine. Only uses about 10watts when running.

  • Will SBS2011 Standard install/work on this if the RAM is lifted to 4Gb?

    • I believe it will. But for the love of God, please do not install SBS2011 + HP N40L on production environment. Hints: very slow.

    Hi Guys,

Read the HP Microserver information from http://www.tekforums.net/guides-projects/hp-proliant-microse…

That might answer few of your questions.

  • Just curious, why are some of you installing ESXi on these things? not to host VMs, surely…(?) or does that make it an iSCSI target for another host?

    • I think the people installed ESXi to have few virtual machines … maybe one windows, one linux, one Hackintosh, What else?

Then from their laptop/pc they can use VSphere or remote desktop to manage.

  • Bought the older one of these last year when they were having the $200 special, running 2x4GB ram (8GB Total) Win7, and 4x 2TB HDD's, hasn't missed a beat, its been on for about 3 weeks after I bought it. Pretty solid and quiet, just that blue HP light is bright as fark haha!

Gigabit lan port is a huge bonus as well, can vouch for this solid little machine. its a mini server so its made to run 24/7 anyways.

  • Just got one!
Does anyone know where to get some cheap 2TB HDs ?
    And cheap memory ?
    Thanks!

  • Well couldn't resist any more. Bought one for home to replace the stupid Airport extreme shared HD setup.
Will try it with Freenas as I want AFP, WHS or any new Windows server dropped support for AFP (2003 was the last to support AFP which doesn't support Lion).
    Thx

Oh man, bought one as this is a nice price. I rather paid a bit more and wait for DessyTek than going with Megabuy.

  • Nice price, currently I'm using a Thecus n3200pro, and have been tempted to upgrade to the n4100evo for a 4 bay with hardware raid..

Freedom of OS on this one is nice tho

  • bah this just proves how much i suck. I havent even gotten around to building / using the Microserver N36L that i bought 2 off when that deal came around last year, and already the newer model is on special. I really gotta get into gear :). Been waiting for freenas 8 to get more features in it.

    • Don't bother with Freenas 8 as it has performance issue.

      • So do you recommend Freenas 7 instead? I am an IT person but dont have any experience with Linux and dont want to mess around too much.

        • I am not and IT person but has many years of experience but only read into NAS 3 months ago. Freenas 7 is more mature but does not have some of the new features that Freenas 8 is venturing into. In saying that, I do not have experience with Freenas 7. I have venture into Linux as OS and came out not impress. Microsoft product is generally much easier and more stable for home setting. I end up sticking with Microsoft system.

        • Windows 7 or WHS?

        • Microsoft product is generally much easier and more stable for home setting.

          Much easier? Yes

          More stable? Not a chance.

My N36L fileserver running Freenas 7 that I set up by following a guide has been running for months on end with no reboots or issues whatsoever. I hardly notice it's existence, as should be the case with a good server.

        • Can you please advise of which guide?

        • Was many months ago, not exactly sure which. I'll try finding it again today. When I installed Freenas 8 did not support DLNA, so went with Freenas 7. In fact I installed 8 before I realised this, so ended up installing 8 first, then swapping over to 7.

        • +1

I've been running WHS 2011 on my N36L Microserver since last year and it hasn't missed a beat.

The only time I ever need to restart is when there's a power blackout or I want to install Windows Updates. Otherwise it goes months between restarts.

  • For those wondering how capable the CPU is - it's about the same speed as an x2 BE-2350 which is an energy efficient AMD chip I used in my old HTPC. It was always more than capable of handling any media thrown at it, however you will need to offload decoding to the GPU. I've got a HD5450 which is highly recommended. Try and get the GDDR3 passive option which run for about $30. Not sure if this needs low-profile PCI-E cards or not.

    • You will need a low profile card due to the space constraints

  • +1 Just bought one. Can't wait to power off my noisy desktop.

    Thanks.

  • succumbed, paid through bpay. :(

  • Can you slide the N40L motherboard into the N36L case without any problems? I assume the power supply should be swapped over as well.

My N36L is about to get some case butchering to fit extra hard drives in, I wouldn't mind a little speed bump but not sure if it's worth it.

    • Why bother? just run the two in parralel. Running 2 x systems will be so much quicker than running 1 system with a ever so slightly newer system board.

  • just bought one, hope I have good experience with DessyTek this time.I am sure I will order more if they are good. :)

  • I've made the payment via BPAY and it's been 24 hours - didn't get no replies nor notification that it's being ordered or processed. Emails sent with no replies - anyone else with the same problem?

    • you may call them to confirm it. Just let them know.

    • Sorry not sure if we missed your email? BPAY payments made on the weekend usually clear Tuesday (1 full business day)

      • Granted I've made the payment on Sunday and assuming what you're saying is true it'd take till Tuesday (i.e. today), will see how that goes. Thanks and yes, you've most definitely missed my email.

    • I ordered on on Friday, had some useful correspondence with them as I wanted the order altered. They did this very quickly, no fuss. They are definitely there and responsive. I got email confirmation when I placed my order. Maybe email problems in your case?

      • Email's working fine mate - just didn't get no replies from queries via email as well as confirmation since payment made via BPAY on Sunday. Cheers,

  • This is a slightly unrelated and may seem like a Captain obvious question, but I am curious with those that have had experience with Windows Home Server 2011. I can not seem to find an exact answer.

Does WHS 2011 have a desktop (not the the launch pad/dashboard) that can be accessed? Further can you install normal programs on the OS?

Nothing fancy. Currently I have an old XP box serving as a central point for printers, torrents, and is able to access my existing Unraid NAS. I am looking to swap over if I can remote access from any computer at home into a normal desktop environment.

This is the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on this deal.

    Cheers!

    Alex

  • I gather they are getting rid off this model to make way for the N54L CPU version.

    • That make sense. Specs here. n54l looks like an overclocked N40L: 2300MHz vs 1500Mhz, 50% faster. More power used at full load, don't know about idle. TDP 25W vs 15W. For my use of this machine, 24/7 linux file/mail/webserver, the lower power draw cpu is better for power $ saving, but if you need more grunt…

      • Oh that's neat. I own a N36L and am tossing up getting the N40L, but now I might skip the N40L and wait for the N54L. That's quite a speed bump.

        • Heh, I'd probably buy a n36l, I'd like the lower power draw. I did make a mistake in my summary above, it is 2200Mhz not 2300, which makes it 47% faster cpu wise, less in practice as memory speed etc is unchanged.

        • Also note the N54L will probably not be this cheap for quite some time….

  • Will this RAM work on microserver?
    http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=6866

  • Thx!
Just bought 1 and paid by bpay!
I should get an email by Thursday, right?

    • +1

If you haven't received an email already, should come through tomorrow. Or let me know your order number and I can check for you.

      • Thx
        Got the email today

        • Status updated…. Dispatched.. Geeez that's quick!!

1 question.. Will this support 4tb??

  • +1

Why do we have to pay in advance for an item on back order? Shouldn't we get billed when it ships like every other company?

    • +4

By paying it means they will allocate the item to you when its in stock…

If you didn't have to pay until later, whats to stop you from ordering 1000 of them and then when it comes time to pay you don't cough up the cash, and they have turned other customers away because the entire stock had been reserved for you.

      • Well glad I didn't jump in too early. Might have got shafted like the other early buyers and not got the extra DVDRW….

  • Finally caved and bought one, well played :P

  • so when is stocking coming in? I paid by paypal on Friday.

    • Expecting new stock to arrive around the 10th April

      • What happened to the 4th April as it says on your website ?

        • It's only an estimate at this stage, we won't know for sure until they actually arrive. Last I heard from the supplier was the 4th but we will have to wait and see
