HP Microserver N40L 2GB 250G 4x SATA 3.5" $219 Pick up or + Delivery

580

Long time reader, first time post. Was searching online for somewhere in stock. To my surprise, they are showing in stock for $219 in shopbot. Called them up and they said they have over 50+ but I need to order online first. I then tried to rock up to their office to pick one up in the city. They said they normally don't allow over the counter sales but I can see they have over 10 piled up in their office. Eventually sold me one. Cheapest I can find anywhere and don't need to wait! I think they're the same ppl with i-tech so I guess they're quite reliable. Ozbargainers fire away…

Love Ozbargain with all your great deals…

  • 250G 4x SATA 3.5 mmm…………….

    • +2

There are four 3.5" SATA bays.

A single 250GB drive is included.

  • i thought ppl are crazy about these….I was when I saw the other post…but didn't want to wait…

    • Everyone has one now.

      • +2

Local Postage for me was $21 to Sydney suburb.

Been using the previous model for a HTPC and it works perfectly with XBMC.

  • What do people use microservers for?

    • +1

      A server, surprisingly.

With a suitable operating system (there is none included in the deal), they make a great file server. If you stick a low profile graphics card in them, they can also do duty as a media player.

But the main purpose is a "Super NAS", with enough grunt to serve up files to a home network (with multiple streaming connections) plus do torrent downloading, etc.

      • Using mine as a NAS for file sharing and also media server. Set up remote access and can access files from my android when out and about. I use windows home server 2011 and Freenas under Esxi as virtual machines. Seems to cope well.

About to try a VoIP distro for home and own business use. Lets see if it has enough grunt!

        • About to try a VoIP distro for home and own business use. Lets see if it has enough grunt!

You mean something running Asterisk? The machine is plenty fast enough, but you might have some problems running it in a VM. People do do it.

      • Low profile graphics cards seem to be
        Hi. priced add-on's for this.

Where can we get 'em cheaper?

      • Can this replace my router?

        • Its a computer not a router.

    • It runs the latest Ubuntu Studio (audio & video editting version of Ubuntu), but you'll need a sound card to hear your audio work…

      ;-)

They also run FreeNAS but the current version seems to require 4 GB of RAM(!)
(Maybe use it for FreeNAS 7.xx which may require less RAM)

Add your own optical drive… &, if you add a USB stick, you can boot from it.

Some use it to store all their files, others stream their media from it.

In a pinch, it's a general purpose computer (runs Windows)

(Don't take our word for it… go get the Genuine HP support info on it.)

  • Only raid 0 and 1???

    • You generally wouldn't use the included RAID anyway… either get an add-on RAID card with whatever you want or software RAID if you're using something like Nexenta.

  • Awesome deal, I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see if I can pickup

    • FreeNAS is said to want to "keep" any disks you give it… so, get to know that S/W before you select FreeNAS.

    • How did you go with the pickup?

I'd like to get one tomorrow.

  • The other associated companies (eg: i-tech.com.au) have higher prices.

    Found this on their site:

  • Yes, I got this unit. I will test spotit.com.au and see if they are any good.
    Cheers

  • Many thanks OP - ordered one as soon as you posted. We'll see if it turns up!

Bugger, still waiting for my one to be delivered from this deal - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66236

  • what is the reliability of this NAS like? any disk failure experience?

    • +2

You're asking the wrong question. The hard drives themselves are where you need to worry about failures, not the enclosure.

      • To be fair crummy ventilation and/or power supply will greatly increase failure rates.

I haven't heard reports that this is a problem with the HP MicroServers.

        • Mine has been running 24/7 since August last year with no hint of any problems

        • in theory yes. ive opened up cases where heatsinks and vents are clogged with dust and they were running for years perfectly fine

        • I wasn't contending every single hard drive in every single computer with dust has failed.

  • +2

    Soooo tempted.
Need a PC for the tv.

    Quick search found this (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=118007)
    Looks promising.

      • I use one for a tv pc and love it. Fast, cheap, low power consumption. All in all a winner. Pair it up with a shintaro media keyboard and done!

    • And combine it with an ATI 6670 card (Low Profile, 1080p, 7.1 sound and $67 from MSY) and we have a winner.

Will go and order one now ;p

      • What does the video card let you do that you couldn't do otherwise? I know the base unit lets you stream (like an avi from the server to my WD TV Live), but what does the gfx card do? Some sort of on the fly format coversion if required or what?

        Cheers

        • +1

With a card such as a ati6450, it has an hdmi output for direct connection to a tv, with sound. Use the N40L as a htpc, eg with a usb twin tv tuner. Works well with xbmc on or off windows 7.
          Thats what I do.
          Getting another for NAS duties

        • +1

Yeah, graphics card is mainly for HD decoding (BluRay rips, 1080 content), but mainly it's for the audio output. The onboard hardware has no audio support, so you need a sound card. Easiest way is to boost both the graphics/decoding ability and add the sound at the same time.

        • what OS are you guys using? I was looking at using freenas, but keen to try and learning anything. would prefer linux over windows 7 as I would like to learn how to use it.

Also how do you know if a card is low profile? eg http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-42060750-HIS_Radeon_HD_6450_Vide…

          I have seen people recommend the ATI 6450, 5450, GT210, HD5450, 6670 or GT520 for this.

        • would prefer linux over windows 7 …

In that case don't get the Radeon card. Stick to Nvidia for Linux. Unfortunately they use more power than the ATI cards.

  • We love you too, andrewq!

  • Hmm, not a fan on their non-encrypted CC transactions. Bpay it is ;p

  • Very tempting. Would like.to replace.this with my current nas. I wonder if it get any cheaper.

    • i guarantee you it will

    • +2

Very tempting. Would like.to replace.this with my current nas

If you already have this Microserver, why would you replace it with your current NAS? LOL confusing post is confusing

  • $24 shipping to Melbourne.

  • Got one a while back still running nicely, http://gomo.us.to/phpsysinfo/

  • Does this have Wifi built in? would you otherwise just use a USB WiFi adapter?

    • I wouldn't use WiFi with server.
      Use PoE instead.

      • Poe?

        • Power over Ethernet

Edit: I meant EoP = Ethernet over Power

        • yep Power over Ethernet you plug UTP RJ45 into the Server NIC then strip the other end of the cable give the copper a lick and then stick it in a GPO

Thems just jokes baby ! I think he means ethernet

        • +1

          You guys are funny.

PoE - Power over Ethernet. YOu send power over LAN cables (Cat5/6) to PoE capable devices such as IP phones, WiFi access points, IP cameras ETC - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_over_Ethernet

Ethernet over power (EoP) is you use your home electrical circuit to create an Ethernet LAN -
          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1512203

        • @ Dr Emmet Brown

i think me means EoP. Ethernet over power

        • My bad…..(it's Friday, my mind is already thinking about the weekend)…
          I meant EoP not PoE

  • Ordered…damn ozbargain!

  • I'd imagine they are well out of stock by now!! Prepare for disappointment?

  • On the microserver/ozbargain bandwagon :/

  • dont these come with Windows SBS pre-installed?

    • Not usually at this price.

  • Got on this as well!
Just need to know what is the best video card to work with XBMC! so many options and peoples suggestions are putting me in alot of different directions. Going to run win 7 Pro. Also what ram do i need to buy? a link would be great to either of these! Thanks

  • i-tech and spotit is under the same company, but run via different marketing and sales team. Apparently they still have some marketing fund so they could sell these below cost..it cannot get any cheaper than that..

  • I wonder how is the performance compare with the N36L?

  • Got one! Thank you very much for making me spend more money lol =[

  • All I need to find now is some cheap HDDs. Prices are pretty ridiculous though - anyone know where to get some cheap ones? 2TB/3TB…

    • Use the $99 2tb external deal posted before, open up the externals and use them as internals :)

  • So whats a good remote control to use with this? So many cheap generic MCE remotes. Does one stand out above the rest?

    • Would also like to know. Is it possible to get a cheap USB IR + universal learning remote working with Win7 MCE?

  • +1

im so tempted to buy this…
But not sure if id get approval from Finance Minister - d@mn!

    • Finance Minister?

Significant other? Boss from work or home?

      • Other euphemisms for 'Finance Minister' might include The Handbrake, and my person favourite, The Old Ball & Chain! :)

I will never even go near Megabuy. I ordered microserver from them last week and got a reply that it is unavailable and will be available after 20th next month. So I asked them to cancel the order and ordered one from spotit last night after looking at this deal. And now I got a reply from Megabuy today that the order can't be cancelled as it has been shipped. Dodgy Megabuy.

    • Ask for your money back regardless and report it to the ACCC.

  • dammit ozbargain now i have no booze money =( still will be good to have one of these

  • $24 delivery to Melbourne
the total is even more expensive than the other store earlier

  • Just got me one. Hope its worth it…..

  • Do they have parking available?

  • Bought one as HTPC, also bought a K400 keyboard from Logitech shop.

I would like to add a HIS 6570 video card to it:

    http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8241

Though the card has two low profile brackets come with it, I was told by the guy at MSY the heat sink of the video card is a bit higher than the PCB. Does anyone know if N40L can fit this card or not?

Also I might add more ram. Can I add 4G to make it 6G in total? 2G and 4G running together should be fine, right? Thank you very much!

    • Yesthe ram should be fine. Though its the norm that you keep each slot equal

    • Any word on if this video card fits? as i would like this model as well but the heat sink over the edge is a concern.

      • I bought a HIS 6450 instead. Have been using it and everything is fine. Very happy with this little HTPC. :-)

  • Still showing as in stock.

If this was USB 3.0 I'd definitely buy it - still trying to decide between this and a dedicated NAS….

  • We're please to announce that www.i-tech.com.au is also selling for $219. 2 extra bundle also available for purchase on www.spotit.com.au.

    http://www.spotit.com.au/Search.aspx?keyword=HP%20MicroServe…

  • I ordered this last week. Does anyone have an update on their order yet?

    • Not yet, hopefully tomorrow.

  • Payed by bpay on Friday, changed to allocating today.

Btw, anyone know if this RAM works on micrserver:
    http://www.spotit.com.au/buy/107484_KINGSTON_1333MHz_DDR3_4G…

    • +1

      Picking up from the store,

according to the status it's "ready for pickup"

3 day turn around (minus the weekend) for pickup

(1 day for bpay to go through, 1 day for allocating, next ready for pickup)

    • I'd also be keen to know whether this RAM would work in the microserver?

Seems like a good price compared to http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/41189-kvr1333d3e9s/4gi which looks to be identical except Scorptec RAM is 'intel validated'.

  • how you guys gonna to pick it up? just realised that they dont open on weekends

    • Oh lol, really? :|

Lucky enough i'll be in the city tomorrow, guess i'll take the car.

  • did they call you advising it's ready for pickup?

    • i called them and they told me that i can pick up from tmw. btw, i bpayed on Friday
